You're not too old for modern fandom, just that modern fandom changed rapidly in a span of around 10 years. And it has changed; from how Fans and Creators are more Accessible, to Fandom becoming Mainstream, to Enshittification molding social media algorithms which dictate Who sees What for Maximum Engagement, to how the Fandom's primary medium is distributed (Streaming's ALL EPISODES AT ONCE versus Cable's One Episode A Week If Lucky It's Not The Same One And Even Luckier It's In Order), to how Corporations versus Creators versus Fans behave, to another myriad of actually accountable factors that all affect each other and influence each other that makes digital anthropology a complete nightmare

And modern fandom's evolution is still going at a breakneck speeds, whether because they're also behaving similar to "Fast Fashion" or something else entirely, I don't know. It's moving all too fast, like an avalanche. It's too much for a person to keep track of at a consistent period of time

Fast Fashion is a fantastic way of putting it. For me it's that plus some weird The Customer is Always Right attitude that people have. Plus, quite frankly, Q-Anon vibes, in the way that reality is negotiable, shaped by everyday discourse and also, entirely irrelevant.

The worst part for me is that this stuff isn't staying contained. It's bleeding into reality, affecting people's jobs and reputations. It's like an ongoing, never-ending Gamergate. And we dismiss a lot of it saying "oh, the worst actors are just young, they'll grow out of it", but I feel like, just as with GG, the main instigators are very much not young. The irony is that I say that I'm too old for fandom, but a lot of the people who make fandom awful could have easily been my classmates.

Something needs to change. But I legit could not tell you where to start or how to make it happen.

Can I tell you something, anon? I had a friend tell me much the same thing. She told me I’ve been writing a lot recently and that my brain deserves a break. I’m inclined to agree. I’m staying with my parents, and they’ve been on my back about a lot of shit, so maybe I’m stressed. Who knows.
