I love people, and will annoy nearly any stranger I meet in the street on some pretext until they are willing to let me make their portrait. But there are times I’ve listened to The News too much, and to not lose faith in humanity, I head for the ocean and wander quietly alone, in awe of the beauty of this world. I have always admired the work of Lewis Hine and Dorothea Lange, and when a son found “an old black box camera” clearing out his wife’s family garage, and asked if I wanted it, I agreed. I was surprised that it was similar to the cameras used by Lange and Hine, and after two years of adjusting, I have a good functional 1925 Graflex RB. I have loved using it in the street as it attracts people and I don’t have to chase after subjects, but there are times I listen to the radio and too many sad stories, so head for the sea. In the crashing of waves and the fresh air I’m able to clear my thoughts and return to the city, to see people again with a strengthened heart and fresh eyes. Muh Hair, 2024 - Black and white photograph

I’m trying large format photography for the first time. This is the first picture I took that I’m proud of.

I’m not proud of the scan, which is only usable thanks to a teetering stack of masked adjustments designed to mitigate the vignetting of my light source and my digital camera’s lens. Maybe someday I will get a flatbed scanner, but I’m still trying to decide whether 4x5 is really my thing.

I think it might be.
