[Jeff Biege Photography] :: [at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve] :: I captured this shot of the 98.9 % full buck moon the night before last . I’ve been after this shot for years. This is not photoshop or AI. I used to think that when I would see images like this. You need two things to create an image like this , a good long lens, I used the Sony 200-600 with a 1x4 converter giving me an effective focal length of 840mm . The second and tricky part is giving yourself enough distance from the subject in the foreground. I was about two miles from this mountain top. The distance creates compression and gives the Illusion of the moon being very large. The moon topped the mountain around 11:30pm . It was still and quiet , with the exception of coyotes howling in the distance. It was on the chilly side with dry cool mountain air. The stars where bright until this moment. I was almost carried away by the mosquitoes, but it was worth every bite. Moments like this are why I’m on this trip , very grateful for my time out here!

I Do Believe I Know Where This Is! (Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While on a flight out of COS on my way to SLC where I was taking in plane window sight. It was here that I happened to realize as I oriented myself that I was flying over what I had seen on a National Park Service map of Great Sand Dunes National Park. There were some clouds covering most of the national park area, but I felt I was able to compose and include enough of the sand dunes and nearby Sangre de Cristo Range.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve boasts 230-metre sand dunes – the tallest in the United States – that cover approximately 78 square kilometres. But these towering sand dunes are just one feature of a Colorado landscape that includes conifer forests, alpine lakes and wetlands. The park and preserve even encompasses stretches of tundra at higher elevations, where it is close to the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Initially proclaimed a national monument in 1932 by President Herbert Hoover, the territory was redesignated as Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve on 13 September 2004, and the size of the park was quadrupled. The park and preserve provide ample and wildly diverse activities for visitors, from sandboarding and sandsledding down the steep dunes to hiking, camping, horseback riding and biking.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is an American national park that conserves an area of large sand dunes up to 750 feet on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley, and an adjacent national preserve in the Sangre de Cristo Range, in south-central Colorado, The park encompasses 107,342 acres.
The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America. Sediments from the surrounding mountains filled the valley over geologic time periods. After lakes within the valley receded, exposed sand was blown by the predominant southwest winds toward the Sangre de Cristos, eventually forming the dunefield over an estimated tens of thousands of years. Ecosystems within the mountain watershed include alpine tundra, subalpine forests, montane woodlands, and riparian zones.

No, this is not a painting. The prairie sunflower (Helianthus pauciflorus) is a striking and vibrant flower that adds a beautiful touch to the sandy landscape of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Its bright yellow petals and dark center create a stunning contrast against the surrounding dunes and grasslands. Photo: Patrick Myers / NPS (Aug 2023) :: [Robert Scott Horton]

“Nothing,” he said. “If someone carried him in from this side, they carried him up from way down the tracks.” “Or down from way up the tracks,” Baca said, grinning. “What were you looking for?” Kennedy asked. “Besides tracks.” “Nothing in particular,” Leaphorn said. “You’re not really looking for anything in particular. If you do that, you don’t see things you’re not looking for.”

Alamosa, CO (No. 1)
Alamosa is a home rule municipality and the county seat of Alamosa County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 9,806 at the 2020 United States Census. The city is the commercial center of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, and is the home of Adams State University.
Alamosa was established in May 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and quickly became an important rail center. Alamosa was the terminus of the D&RG until 1881, when the line was extended to Monte Vista. The railroad had an extensive construction, repair and shipping facility in Alamosa for many years and headquartered its remaining narrow gauge service here with trackage reaching many points throughout southwest Colorado and northern New Mexico. Alamosa is now a notable tourist town with many nearby attractions, including the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado Gators Reptile Park and the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The town hosts "Summer Fest on the Rio" which occurs the first weekend in June, the Early Iron car show over the Labor Day weekend, and "Weekends on the Rio" on various Sundays throughout the summer  The city takes its name from the Spanish adjective Alamosa, meaning "of cottonwood", for the cottonwood forests which grow along the Rio Grande and throughout town.
