The Allman Brothers Band
Re-posting this with some additional details...
When Gregg Allman (1947-2017) passed nearly seven years ago, I was driven to the negative archive to see if I had any decent shots of the man. I had attended at least two concerts in 1979, as I recall, which would put these images in the Enlightened Rouges time period. I was not thrilled with the quality of the negatives I found, but I was glad to have them nonetheless.
Gregg used his Hammond B-3 with Leslie speaker, of course, but what one sees above is an electric piano with “Hohner” printed thereon. In addition to Gregg, there are three other original members of the band playing during this time period—Dickey Betts, who can be seen playing his Gibson Les Paul, as well as both drummers: Jai Johanny Johanson (Jaimoe) and Butch Trucks.
In the end, one can say that Gregg Allman certainly had an interesting life, with extreme highs and lows. Musically, he had a unique voice and wrote some very memorable songs. The band, which Gregg and his talented brother Duane formed in 1969, was extremely influential and enjoys a firm place in the history of rock and roll. Duane is often to be found on lists of "best guitarists" of course—he was an unusual talent, to be sure.
Three photographs by Richard Koenig.
The close-up of Gregg was taken in Indianapolis at Market Square Arena on May 26th 1979. The other two: the Band from afar, with the second highlighting Dickey, were shot at Alpine Valley, near East Troy, Wisconsin, on August 18th 1979.

The world of music lost a legend with the passing of Dickey Betts, co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band and architect of some of their most iconic sounds. Betts, who battled cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, died peacefully at his Florida home on April 18, 2024, at the age of 80. A Founding Father of Southern Rock Dickey Betts' contribution to music goes beyond his impressive guitar skills. Alongside Duane Allman, he played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of the Allman Brothers Band and, in turn, the birth of a new genre - Southern rock. This unique blend of blues, country, R&B, and jazz with the raw energy of 60s rock resonated deeply with audiences, influencing generations of musicians like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kid Rock. Dickey Betts A Pioneering Band with a Distinctive Sound Formed in 1969, the Allman Brothers Band challenged traditional music structures. They weren't interested in three-minute pop songs. Instead, they pushed boundaries with lengthy improvisational jams, both in their live performances and recordings. Another groundbreaking aspect of the band was its racial diversity, a rarity for a group hailing from the Deep South. The band's story, however, is not without its share of tragedy. Founding member Duane Allman died tragically in a motorcycle accident in 1971, followed by bassist Berry Oakley's death in a similar accident a year later. These losses, coupled with substance abuse issues within the band, led to multiple breakups and reunions throughout their career. Despite the turmoil, the Allman Brothers Band's impact remained undeniable. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012. Although Betts left the band definitively in 2000, his musical journey continued. He embarked on a successful solo career and formed his band, Great Southern, which featured his son, guitarist Duane Betts. From Florida Roots to Rock and Roll History Born Forrest Richard Betts in 1943, Dickey grew up in Bradenton, Florida, near the highway immortalized in his song "Ramblin' Man." Music was a constant presence in his life, with his early exposure to country, bluegrass, and Western swing shaping his musical foundation. He started with the ukulele and banjo before graduating to the electric guitar, drawn to its ability to impress the ladies. At the young age of 16, he set off on his first musical adventure, joining a circus band. Returning home, he joined forces with bassist Berry Oakley in a band that eventually evolved into Second Coming. A fateful jam session in 1969 with Duane Allman and his brother Gregg Allman would change the course of music history. This meeting led to the formation of the Allman Brothers Band, a supergroup destined for greatness. From Debut Album to Live Legends: The Allman Brothers Band's Meteoric Rise The band relocated to Macon, Georgia, and in 1969, released their self-titled debut album. A year later, "Idlewild South" cemented their reputation with Betts' instrumental masterpiece, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," quickly becoming a staple in their live sets. However, it was the 1971 double album "At Fillmore East" that truly catapulted them to superstardom. Considered one of the greatest live albums of the classic rock era, "Fillmore East" showcased the electrifying interplay between Betts and Duane Allman's guitars. While Duane favored a bluesy slide style, Betts leaned towards country influences, creating a unique sonic tapestry when harmonized. The band also boasted a powerful rhythm section featuring two drummers - "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks. Tragedy struck again with Duane Allman's death just four days after "Fillmore East" reached gold status. Despite the loss, the band persevered, their popularity continuing to soar. The 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" topped the charts, featuring "Ramblin' Man," a song that perfectly encapsulated Betts' songwriting prowess. His catchy vocals and distinctive guitar work propelled the song to the number two spot on the singles chart, only to be held back by Cher's "Half Breed" (ironically, Gregg Allman's future wife). The soaring melody of "Ramblin' Man" became a permanent fixture in bars across the country, highlighting Betts' knack for crafting enduring hooks.

Reposted from @peregoncreative It was an honor to design tonight’s VIP poster for @officialgreggallman 75th bday jam at @beacontheatre. As a kid from Georgia, Gregg and ABB were on heavy rotation in my house growing up, and provided the soundtrack to many road trips. Gregg’s musical legacy will be celebrated tonight by artists such as @olddominionmusic @brothersosborne @gavindegraw and many more at the historic Beacon Theatre in NYC. I actually started working on this art over a year ago, but Covid prevented the original event from happening, so I’m really happy that this came to fruition. These 7 color screen printed posters will be available to VIP ticket holders only. We miss ya, Gregg! Happy heavenly birthday. Album Number Three Hundred Thirty. “Home” is the debut album by husband-and-wife singers Delaney & Bonnie, released on the Stax label. Most of the album was recorded at Stax Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, from February to November 1968, with additional overdubs in July 1969, and features many of Stax's house musicians, including #DonaldDuckDunn, #stevecropper, #BookerTJones, and #IsaacHayes. My copy is on #staxrecords - STS-2026. (The only Stax Records in my collection.) FYI - #delaneyandbonnie were an American duo of singer-songwriters #delaneybramlett and #bonniebramlett. In 1969 and 1970, they fronted a rock/soul ensemble, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, whose members at different times included #duaneallman, #greggallman, #ericclapton, #georgeharrison, #LeonRussell, #bobbywhitlock, #davemason, #stevehowe, #RitaCoolidge, and #KingCurtis. #rockandroll #thesixties #sixtiesmusic #bluesrock #blues https://www.instagram.com/p/CdQ1OFQOGBe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Crate Digger’s Corner: 2017 Albums, Pt. 3!
Tumblr media
Crate Digger’s Corner…by DJ Musically Rich
Here is the third part to my 2017 list. For those that missed the first part (and haven’t taken a look at it yet), I’m giving a quick list of albums that I heard from 2017 in 7-10 at a time. There will be a few more parts to the list over the coming weeks. I may do a listening to some of the ones that I know I like, but want to revisit, and use that as an opportunity to review some of those more deeply (If there are any you see that you would particularly like to see a review of, leave a note). This list does not include reissues, live material or compilations.
Artist- Album (general genre)- and brief description
Prophets Of Rage- s/t (Hard Rock/Rap) Rage Against The Machine with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real taking the place of vocalist Zach de la Rocha. That sounds great, the EP they released with a few live and such giving people just a taste was pretty good. This album, unfortunately, falls a little flat. It sounds like warmed over Rage riffs with very stiff performances. Overproduction in the studio to make everything sound a little to clean may be adding to that vibe as well. Maybe if you are looking for something new by Rage and have completely worn out all of your Rage albums this might do it for you, or if you’re like me, it’ll just send you right back to those albums.
Mike Stern- Trip (Jazz/Jazz Fusion)- The first album Stern is making since a horrible fall (hence the title) in which he badly injured his hands on the streets of NYC. Not to worry for his fans, you would not know that he was currently still rehabbing and trying to get full motion back to his hands or that he was gluing his pick to his thumb and fingers. He sounds terrific, like he never lost a beat, whether he was playing more straight ahead modern jazz or his fusion inflected style which is often where he gets his accolades from the public.
Gregg Allman- Southern Blood (Southern Rock)- This is a fitting finale for the great keyboardist and co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band. The album came out posthumously and fittingly deals with somber themes overall. It also contains a moving cover of Little Feat’s staple ‘Willin’’.
Kesha- Rainbow (Pop)- Kesha delivers a more mature album focusing a little bit more on songwriting. It seems to have a larger number of slower tempoed songs on it, but for me the two songs she performs with The Eagles Of Death Metal are true highlights. They are enough of a highlight that I think a full-length collaboration between the two could be interesting.
Beck- Colors (Electro Pop)- The ever eclectic Beck pulls out his dancing shoes and unleashes a neon wave of music upon the listener. This is one of his best albums.
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit-The Nashville Sound (Country Rock/Outlaw Country)- Isbell puts up a turkey (bowling term) with this  newest studio album. Isbell continues his amazing writing and playing on the third album in a row. All three of which were produced by studio maestro Dave Cobb.
Primus- Desaturating Seven (Alt Rock)- Les Claypool creates a concept album based on a very dark children’s book. It is probably the album in Primus’ entire catalog not really meant to be broken down into singles. Musically, he does a wonderful job of bringing the story to life.
Here are 7 albums I heard in 2017, there will be more from this list coming in the future, and this isn’t necessarily a ranking, just in the order that I was writing them down. I hope you enjoy and happy hunting!
