Beloved Highlander
Tumblr media
They look to me like they’re having a conversation.
“Yes, it is a bit chilly up here.  That wind’s coming straight out of Norway!” “Actually, do you think I could get my skirt back down? I know it’s less sexy, but - erm - bits of me are getting cold.”
Also, do you think he’ll take his sword off before they make love or is it going to be some kind of prop?
Nice that the hills are entirely crenelated, but a shame that the rest of Scotland appears to be on fire.
Gregor Grant returns to his beloved Highland home Glen Dhu only to find his father has lost the family estate. It now belongs to the enchanting Lady Mackintosh. Gregor leaves, vowing not to return, but years later, Lady Mackintosh finds herself in need of help. Gregor is the only person who can help her, how can she enlist his help?
"Gregor Grant! Where is the key to the shed? I CAN'T GET INTO THE SHED!"

Strigoi - Bathed In A Black Sun Review
Gregor Mackintosh doesn’t sleep. Never content to simply sit on his legacy, he is constantly writing. As one of the founding fathers of death doom, he has nothing else to prove. He’s spent decades as one of the primary songwriters and lead guitarist of Paradise Lost. He didn’t give us time to mourn the loss of Vallenfyre before establishing Strigoi.  2022’s Viscera is the band’s strongest…

Strigoi
Vallenfyre ruled, the first Two Paradise Lost albums probably rank among my top 25 records of all time, and I always thought the Secret were super underrated, so I was pretty stoked on that first Strigoi album. Flash forward a couple years and this new one is even better... Heavier. Slower. More despondent. Chock full of eerie leads. And clad in Gregor Mackintosh's utterly unfuckwithable guitar tone.
Equal parts Celtic Frost, 90's Peaceville death doom, and crusty blackened grind.

PARADISE LOST “Lost Paradise”, LP 1990 (The first funereal masterpiece of Darkness, Death & Doom totally drowned in rotting misery and deadly inner torments, the reflect of an eternal punishment for us all...)
“Unleashed upon man Their poisoning brains An empty grasp - a threat to all those sane. The daggers poised For shallow minds Unheard laughs... Disrupting all mankind This rotting misery The beggars are all gathered No others rule supreme... Rotting misery Clouded realities Brought before us Their pointless lives As all their faith is lost Morbid existence Of these poor souls Now must die to exist no more”

Monday, October 28: Paradise Lost, “Shadowkings”
Draconian Times was designed to be Paradise Lost’s breakthrough, and while it was not a blockbuster (despite attempts by Music for Nations to will it into being so by massively overstating its sales figures), the record did build on the focused writing and playing of Icon and deliver some amount of success, ascending to the Top 20 on the UK charts and setting the band up for a major label deal a few years later.  In hindsight, the machinations were transparent: Gregor Mackintosh’s melodies were anthemic and reached for the rafters like never before, and Nick Holmes’ yelling fused his earlier barking style with more than a touch of Hetfield-ish swagger.  All of this made “Shadowkings” a more straightforward headbanger than even the most direct moments on Icon, which was ultimately the true landmark in Paradise Lost’s discography. That said, the track was fun 90s metal and was unapologetic about being so during a time when the genre was on the ropes, making it all the more remarkable that Draconian Times was a success at all, even if only a minor one.
