We're in for six more weeks of winter, at least if you take your meteorological cues from a woodchuck.
According to his handlers, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow.
Phil, the world's most famous groundhog, lives a pretty charmed life. He and his groundhog wife, Phyllis, reside in their own zoo at the town library in Punsxutawney, Pa., where visitors can peer at them through an outside window. The groundhogs dine on hand-chopped produce and nap on a bed of soft hay.
Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil Predicts 6 More Weeks Of Winter
You’ve got it good here, Steve Allen. When you started burrowing your way into my chicken coop every night I didn’t even disturb you, I just spent a day digging out all around the coop and burying cinder blocks so you couldn’t dig under the walls any more. You’ve got a compost pile full of food scraps—remember those apple peels the other day? Yeah, I saw you stuffing one long peel after another into your face like big pieces of spaghetti. You get to clean up the grain and oats the horses drop around their feed buckets. You even get water left out for you.
I’ve been nice to you, Steve Allen, and how do you repay me? Not only did you leave a giant pile of poop right by my car in the driveway the other day but then I discovered THIS!
YOU CHEWED UP TWO OF THE BEAUTIFUL PUMPKINS IN MY PUMPKIN PATCH!!!
This is the last straw, Steve Allen. You will no longer be known as Steve Allen the Groundhog. Forever more, you will be known as Steve Allen the Asshole.
My brother posted this on Facebook: Punxsutawney Phil woke up, looked around him, and pronounced in groundhogese, "I have seen not only my own shadow, but the long, dark shadow that has enveloped your land, blotting out all light. All joy. All hope. Know that this winter shall not end! Not in six weeks! Not in six upon six thousand weeks!" He then turned to the president of the Inner Circle and said, "Our accord is broken! Do not call upon me again!" And with that, Phil scurried back into his burrow.
Happy Groundhog Day! Groundhogs have short ears and a short tail, and can weigh up to 11 pounds. They have two layers of fur: A dense grey undercoat and a longer coat of banded guard hairs that gives the groundhog a “frosted” appearance. Despite how they look, groundhogs are good swimmers and tree climbers. Photo of a groundhog eating a flower at Shenandoah National Park by National Park Service.
What does it mean for the weather when you leave your burrow and get a hug and a snack?
