"You have a big mouth, like your mother," Levi remarks as the baby yawns in his arms, reaching up with her fists, her entire face scrunching up.

"Oi, shut up," you play-grumble as you lower yourself onto the couch besides them, your husband and daughter. You place yours and Levi's teacups down on the table and shift backwards to make yourself more comfortable, tucking your legs beneath you as you lean into Levi's side. Smiling down at the baby, you reach to stroke her cheek.

"Where is the lie?" Levi retorts, his voice incredibly quiet and soft. Not something most people would be used to, outside of your family, but ever since he's been reading baby books, he's been trying to use a gentler tone when interacting with the baby. He was the same when she was just a growing bump, especially in the last two months. There must have been something in it, you think with a smile as your daughter's brown eyes open and fix on her father's face, her expression smoothing out at the sound of his soothing tone. You watch Levi as he lets her tiny fist hold his finger. He begins to swing his finger and the baby watches him in adoration. "You're usually the loudest one in an argument. You're even louder than Eren."

You huff in irritation. "That hurts," you fake pout. "Eren's loud like 80% of the time."

"Yeah but when you start, you're even louder."

"I grew up with six brothers, all shouting over each other. Sue me. I had to adapt," you mutter defensively, fighting back a smile.

"I'm quite aware of how loudly your brothers are." Levi remarked, his lips twitching. "Pretty sure poor Heidi didn't get a wink of sleep during their hospital visits," he added, rocking the baby a little. "Nor the other patients for that matter."

You giggle at the memory. Levi had thrown Damian out after he insisted on improvising a song for his new niece. Not only had he woken several other patients up but the song had included some distinctly non-child-friendly lyrics too.

"That's just how they are. They love her so much."

"They should come with a health warning," Levi murmured. "May be hazardous to your eardrums."

You chuckle again, resting your cheek on his shoulder, admiring the way Heidi continues to watch her daddy, eyelids lowering in growing sleepiness. "You've definitely got the knack," you murmur.

"It helps not having a mouth big enough to sink the Titanic."

"Don't get started on that film again." You plead quietly with some exasperation.

To his credit, he doesn't continue down that line of conversation although you suspect that it's because he wants to keep quiet for Heidi to drift off and not because he's sick of pointing out the inaccuracies and complain about various elements of the plot.

"Daddy's so rude to me," you coo to your little princess and you beam as her sleepy eyes flicker to you. "Don't listen to him. He's just jealous because his mouth is so small and adorable."

Levi turns his face to you in incredulity. "How is my mouth adorable?"

You giggle and reach up to rub your index finger over his narrow mouth and plump lips. "It's so petite," you tease, leaning in to kiss his mouth. His mouth moves gently against yours so you smile against him. "So cute." you add, and proceed to give him short kisses.

He grumbles a little but continues to return your kisses. Your noses rub together affectionately and you rub your cheek against his. You withdraw just enough to be able to look into his full face and then take in the baby again too.

Heidi has completely drifted off. Seeing her so content in Levi's arms swells your heart and you bring a hand up to your lips, lightly touching, enough to hold back your emotions just a little so they don't spill over. Affection surges through you for your little family. You understand why people say that family is everything now. Why some people say starting a family is like beginning a new life. This feels that way. Yours and Levi's story continues but Heidi's arrival has been the dawn of a new world.

"Hey," Levi whispers, "you okay?"

"Yeah," you promise as your voice breaks, "I just- I really love us being together like this, together with her."

He rubs his nose against yours and presses his mouth on your lips in a light, tender kiss. "So do I. This, right here," he said as he returned to gazing at Heidi, "is perfect."

Levi carefully adjusts Heidi so that she's secure in his left arm while his right arm surrounds your waist. You nestle onto his shoulder, brushing your lips against his neck while keeping your own focus on the baby, thinking how extraordinary it is that such a tiny little being could have such a strong hold over both your hearts.. Even without doing anything but snoozing away, it's as though your own heart is beating because of her. Like somehow she's tied to your own life, your own heart.

"We should probably sleep soon," Levi murmurs although his eyes show no signs of sleepiness nor does he make any move to get up. "while she sleeps."

"Soon," you agree, equally content, "but not yet. I just want to stay like this a little longer."

You smile as your husband lowers his lips to Heidi's wispy tufts of dark hair and kisses her head. "Her hair's so dark." he remarks quietly.

"It's gonna be like yours," you agree. "Guess she's gonna be a Daddy's girl too."

"At least that gives her a chance at having volume control," Levi comments and you swat his shoulder. "Although," he adds, "you're wrong about one thing, you know?"

"Oh?"

"She's already my girl," Levi declares in a whisper. "and she always will be."

#cats #(medical stuff mention for tags) #poasting confortable image of boye for peace and serenity and such forthe #I have little weird episodes sometimes where I get shaky (but like violently like 'would spill a drink if you were holding it beacuse #your hands are moving so much' type shaky) and weird and sick feeling but usually it passes in an hour or less. but last night I just #literally couldnt sleep I was shaking so much and my heartrate was up a ton and wouldn't go down even after like 6 hours plus super nausea #so I went to the hospital and now shall wear a heart monitor for a week. which hopefully it's just some weird drastic low blood sugar #event or something and there's nothing actually going on. ekg + ct scan for blod clots + virus panel + almost all of the blood work seems #normal so... aa....... #Though me being so privacy focused hrggh... I basically have a constantly bluetooth connected device around me #since the monitor comes with a cell phone that is constantly transmitting data to the place. which they said they'll call you #if they see anything weird which is also scary. random phone calls... but definitely better than letting an issue go unadressed lol #the phone is also not meant to be more than 10 feet away from the monitor at any time so I put on this old tactical fishing #vest thing thats like navy green with 100 pockets and im just using one of the giant pocketson the side as a phone holder #my enormous silly vest just to keep one little phone #ANYWAY... because I got up early the morning before and didn't sleep at all and spent nearly all day in waiting rooms and such #I have been awake for like 32 hours striaght. which I'm sure also does not help with an elevated heartrate lol #feeling shrimp emotions or whatever people talk about unlocking at a certain level of stress and sleep deprivation #and also no food or water. after a while they brought me like 3 saltines and some ice water but I basically also haven't eaten since 3am #last night and it's 2pm now.. #thus............ bapy............. baby boye....... he will help ease all ailments with his baby powers... #And no I dont drink energy drinks or anything with caffiene really I'm afraid of all substances on the planet essentially #My body just likes to become shaky and weird randomly even when I'm not conciously anxious about anything/have had no caffiene/etc #and I guess I'm always more nervous about getting anything heart related checked out because of my arm/shoulder/chest area injury stuff #... i literally have constant chest pain all the time. it moves around but i nearly always have some sort of pain or pressure in my chest #so when people are like 'oh well a little weird heartrate is fine but watch out if you have pain!' it's like... i always do lol.. how am I #supposed to tell the Bad Pain apart from the Always Pain when the descriptions of Bad Pain are very very similar #AAAANYway.... hrghh... i wanted to be very productive and finally post drafts and wrok on things today. but alas.. #I can at least post small image of soft boye.. though he recently got into stuff in the bathroom whilst left #alone and knocked things into the toilet.. So perhaps not an innocent and NICE boy.. but still.. a soft one .. beautfile....

Perhaps this is what will bring me back into my groove, perhaps not. I'm feeling relaxed and open minded about it, which is nice.

Prologue: An Uneventful Youth

Before the hunger overtook you, when you were nothing but a scullery maid, you had ambition. You wouldn’t stand in the shadow of nobility, nor would you resign yourself to a life cutting vegetables and scrubbing wine stains from the floor.  

No. You knew what the servants whispered, what the mirror confirmed. 

‘Erina isn’t his only daughter.’ 

‘He rolled around with the kitchen maid.’ 

‘You can’t deny the resemblance.’ 

‘Poor Lady Pendleton; it must be awful to look upon her every day.’ 

Erina never asked about it. Why would she? You inherited your Mother’s traits, her hair and eyes, and her complexion. Your face, however, was your father’s face. 

“He’ll never claim you,” your mother said before dying, “ but he’ll keep you safe here. Don’t resent him for that. ” 

‘Safe,’ you thought, ‘and locked away where the nobles will never see me.’ 

You were the same age as Erina—but you would never carry the Pendleton name. You would never marry a kind and noble man to improve your lot in life, nor would you be given prospects. 

Not unless you forced a change. 

So, as Erina chattered endlessly about her carefree days and growing interest in calligraphy, you smiled and gave your sister grapes from the storeroom. 

“Thank you, these are perfect!” Erina beamed. She placed the grapes into her basket and waved goodbye. You smiled, as you always did, until the young mistress vanished from sight. 

‘I hope you choke on those grapes,’ you thought, before returning to your duties. 

And so went your uneventful youth—until the day you met Dio.

So you know how Luis loves referencing Don Quixote?

I sat there for the longest time, wondering why it sounded familiar to me, IT'S A REFERENCE TO A BOOK AND A MOVIE (in Luis's case, probably just the book)

Now I read the book back in high school didn't watch the movie till college but Luis has rekindled a memory and I need to hunt the book down again like I want a hardback copy on my book shelf.

I'm also just sitting here imagining that man having a well-worn and very loved copy of Don Quixote, I mean, there's no way he doesn't have a copy with how heavily he references it.

And it's actually cute that he calls Leon, Sancho Panzo, because their banter checks out, and it implies (at least for me) Luis saw Leon and went "yes him, that one will be my squire. I like him."

If you are curious about the books plot...

The plot revolves around the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility, an hidalgo from La Mancha named Alonso Quijano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he either loses or pretends to have lost his mind in order to become a knight-errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha.[b] He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's lofty rhetoric often concerning knighthood, already seeming old-fashioned at the time or incoherent to most, and representing the most droll realism in contrast to his master's idealism though at times left being very impressed. In the first part of the book, Don Quixote does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story meant for the annals of all time.

The book was also originally in two parts, and there was (not sure if it's still performed) a play inspired by it ,MAN of La Mancha.

Like I could go on about Don Quixote... if you want me too, I'm sure Luis would enjoy it XD

And, of course, Leon isn't going to get what Luis is referencing at all. It's going to be nonsense to him, which makes their enteractions whenever Luis references the book, even funnier.
