Welcome to the final instalment of my series where I discuss the origins of every fish Pokemon. Today I’ll be covering gen IX. For previous generations see here: gens I-II, gens III-IV, gens V-VI, and gens VII-VIII.
People criticize Paldea for having too many birds and dogs, but I haven’t seen people talking about how many fish it has. I bring this up because Paldea has a lot of new fish. Only Hoenn introduced more fish lines. The first Paldean fish is the Wiglett line, which is also the only new multi-stage line. In this case, the species name helpfully tells us what it’s based on: garden eels. These eels are famous for poking their heads out of the sediment while keeping most of their bodies in an underground burrow. Because they typically live in large colonies and look a bit like grass, a group of eels can look a lot like a patch of plants, hence the name. Garden eels are very shy and will retract into their burrows at any sign of danger. This behavior is shared with Wiglett, which will retract if it sees the player coming, forcing you to sneak attack it to battle.
Tumblr media
(image: garden eels looking adorable)
Wugtrio follows the garden eel origin, but also incorporates some moray eel inspiration. Both Morays and Wugtrio lurk in holes in rocks and grab passing prey, dragging them in. The fact that both Pokémon are slimy enough to get the Gooey ability is likely a reference to hagfish. These jawless fish are famous for their defense tactic where they secrete large amounts of slime when threatened.
Tumblr media
(image: somebody playing with hagfish slime)
Finally, Wugtrio’s red coloration may draw from the giant tube worms found around hydrothermal vents.
Tumblr media
(image: giant tube chilling on a hydrothermal vent. Except not chilling because it's really hot there)
As one of the two convergent pokemon lines, the Wiglett line is an example of convergent evolution. This is when distinct groups of organisms evolve similar adaptations in response to similar selective pressures. A classic example of this is the flap of skin used for gliding known as a patagium that has evolved independently in flying squirrels (rodents), gliding possums (marsupials) and colugos (primate relatives). All three groups evolved the patagium to beter move between trees in their arboreal environments. In the case of Wiglett’s similarity to Diglett, the dex entries and official website helpfully tell us that the two species evolves similar body plans because they are both dedicated burrowers.
Tumblr media
(image: a diagram showing an example of convergent evolution in sugar gliders and flying squirrels)
Veluza is based on hakes, specifically merluccid hakes. These are predatory fish in the same family as cod and haddock who are known for being indiscriminate predators of smaller fish. Fittingly, Veluza is pretty aggressive, chasing down the player whenever they get near one. Hake are pretty economically important in Spain, Paldea’s main real-world basis. The Spanish love their hake. Not only do more than half the hake sales in Europe go to Spain, Spain is also the world’s largest consumer of the fish.
Tumblr media
(image, a silver hake)
Veluza having a prominent dorsal fin and what seems to be an anal fin followed by smaller triangular finlets reminds me pretty heavily of tuna, who are also very fast predators.
Tumblr media
(image: a tuna's tail, showing the finlets)
Veluza also almost looks kind of mechanical, which makes me wonder if there’s some inspiration coming from torpedoes or submarines. Veluza’s habit of removing parts of its own flesh is an example of autotomy. This is when an animal will remove parts of its own body and is the basis for the pokemon move autotomize (which Veluza doesn’t get for whatever reason). Autotomy is mostly used for defense while Veluza uses it to increase its speed and offenses. In my very quick search I was unable to find any examples of fish that use autotomy, but the fact that the move that represents this in Veluza is called Fillet Away and the dex mentions how the shed flesh tastes, it’s pretty clearly another reference to how much the Spanish eat hake. In this case, it’s a fish that fillets itself for you.
I’m going to talk about Dondozo and Tatsugiri together as while they’re different lines, they’re linked to each other. Dondozo is a giant catfish, specifically a wels catfish, the largest freshwater fish in Europe. While not native to the Iberian peninsula, the species has been introduced there. Dondozo’s diet including bird Pokémon is a reference to how wels catfish will beach themselves to try to catch and eat birds.
Tumblr media
(image: an absolute unit wels catfish with human for scale)
Something I can’t understate is that Dondozo is big. At a height (presumable length in this case) of 39’04”, Dondozo is the second largest non-legendary in the franchise and 3rd largest overall after Eternatus and Wailord. That’s whale shark sizes and dwarfs the beluga sturgeon. The largest freshwater fish in the world. The two largest non-legendary Pokémon being aquatic is true to real life, where animals in the water can get much bigger than animals on land. Nothing as big as a blue whale can exist on land because without the support that water gives, the animal’s own weight would crush it. This is why beaching is usually a death sentence for large whales. Of course it would be remiss of me to not mention that both Tatsugiri and Dondozo have a sushi theme. Dondozo is based on a sushi chef. It’s head frills look like the traditional sushi chef headband and its tongue looks like a sushi geta, the wooden bench sushi is commonly served on. The sushi theme is more prevalent with Tatsugiri, which looks like a piece of hand-shaped sushi.
Tumblr media
(image: sushi nigiri)
The different forms and colors of Tatsugiri make different individuals look like different dishes. The different colors may reference koi, which could also explain its dragon typing. Koi, and carp in general, are often associated with dragons. Tatsugiri can use its fins like limbs and survive out of water, possibly referencing fish like lungfish and mudskippers, who can live out of the water. Dondozo and Tatsugiri have a mutualistic relationship, a type of symbiosis where both parties benefit. Tatsugiri is the brains to Dondozo’s brawn, giving instructions to the larger fish and acting as bait to lure in prey. This is a form of aggressive mimicry. Tatsugiri is stated to dwell in Dondozo’s mouth. This could reference two things. The first is mouth brooding, where a parent fish will keep its offspring inside its mouth to protect them. The second is cleaner fish, who can safely go into the mouth of larger predatory fish because of a mutualistic relationship with them.
Tumblr media
(image: a mouth-brooding fish)
The final fish Pokémon so far and the only legendary fish is Chi-Yu. This adorable little malevolent monstrosity is based on a goldfish, or rather fire in the shape of a goldfish. Like the other Treasures of Ruin, its true body is the actual treasure, magatama beads in this case, while the rest of the body is gathered from the environment to support the treasure. Chi-Yu being born from envy and the jade beads being in place of the eyes makes it a very literal green-eyed monster. Chi-Yu and the Treasures of Ruin in general are based on the Four Perils, malevolent beings from Chinese mythology. The Treasures don’t map exactly to the Perils and the connection is stronger in some than others. For example, Ting-Lu is based on the Taotie, which is usually depicted on cauldrons, and it has a massive cauldron on its head. Chi-Yu is probably based on the Hundun, a faceless creature with 6 legs. Chi-Yu doesn’t have a proper face, just beads where eyes should be, and it has 6 fins on each side of its body. The Hundun also has wings and fins are kind of like wings I guess? Not related to Pokémon, but the Hundun appears in the Iron Widow, which is a book you absolutely should read.
Tumblr media
(image: a depiction of a Hundun)
And with that, this series comes to a close, at least until we get Gen X. I may do something similar with other Pokémon based on aquatic creatures, but I haven’t decided yet. I may also discuss some of my own fakemon if anyone is interested.

You are responsible for the content you consume! Stop reading if you feel uncomfortable.
The sun had not yet risen, and the waters wore an illusion of darkness—a blurry veil of sapphire that soothed my soul. My eyes crashed to a close like the waves on the rocks. I heard the conches communicate in hushed whispers as the wind howled a lachrymose lullaby to damned souls like me. Did I dare to sing with the waters and profess a forbidden love for the sea? No, I wasn’t the fool I was yesterday or the day before. After all, people change like the tides before it all goes still.
As my kitten heels clicked on the cool concrete path, I looked back at the sea once more. I firmly held my straw hat in place as Notus, determined to blow it away, caused a trickle of sweat to drip down my forehead. I pulled out my embroidered handkerchief and wiped the bead off before I resumed my stroll away from the waters. The distant cries of the mighty albatross of the North Sea faded into the bustling streets of Essex. I hummed as I swooped up a newspaper from the trash, scanning the headlines before tossing it away. I opened my parasol as the sanguine sun stretched its fiery body above the port, piercing every shadow with blinding radiance. Hoarse offers of fresh-cut flowers, baked loaves of bread, imported treasures, and every meaningless trinket imaginable overwhelmed my ears. My nose—ever the detective—picked up the scent of fresh fish, and my mouth involuntarily watered. I blushed when I felt the saliva trickle down my chin and wiped it off with my glove. “It seems I am quite the mess today,” I muttered as I approached the stall, eyeing the filleted flesh with an unspoken urgency.
I removed my gloves as I picked up the headless haddock, resisting the temptation to consume it as is.
“Somethin’ catch yer eye, missus,” A gruff voice chuckled as I set the fish down, “By all means, buy it.”
“My apologies, sir,” I cleared my throat and felt my ears burn red at my indecency, “I just haven’t seen fish that looks so… delectable.”
“Relax, missus, ya needn’t be so stiff ‘round me,” He hoarsely chuckled as he adjusted his stained apron, “Can I cut somethin’ fresh fer ya?”
“Do you sell cod?”
“Of course.” He turned around and seized a flailing cod with strong, hairy arms, setting it on a wooden cutting board. He gripped his knife with a steady hand and, with a quick motion, cut the fish’s head clean off. Blood splattered on his face, and I felt my stomach growl at the scent.
“Seems like someone’s hungry,” He grinned—the way most sailors do—and packaged the fix with practiced ease, “Don’t tell me ya ‘aven’t eaten yet, missus. Yer already too thin as is, delicate thing, aren’t ya? What’s a lovely lady like yourself doin’ in the markets?”
“I haven’t any time to sit down in the mornings; too much to be done then to idly ruminate as I eat,” I took the bag from his hands and—what I assume was intention—felt his calloused fingers against my hands.
“A woman after my own heart,” His gray eyes bore into my soul, and he wiped the blood off his cheek, “Didn’t feel a ring on yer hand too so I won’t have to sneak in through the back.”
“Didn’t your mother teach you any class?,” I gasped and pulled away from him, crossing my arms.
“What’s wrong, little lady? Need me to put a ring on ya finger first? Don’t know if I could afford somethin’ worthy of you,” He smugly grinned as I reached into my purse, “Now, I know yer not offerin’ to pay fer that. Take it, it’s free of charge.”
“Thank you, sir,” I hoarsely responded, trying to make my disapproval apparent through my mannerisms.
With that, I walked away and only glanced over my shoulder once to see a smile that nobody had ever presented to me. Would it be wrong to ask for his name?
“Don’t be foolish, Y/N,” A small, unfamiliar blush swept across my sunkissed skin as I walked into an alleyway, “Man and monster do not go well.”
I unwrapped the package and, with sharp, beastly fangs, tore into the scales of the sea. Blood splattered on the old stone pathway and onto my gloves as I ravished the fish. Its bones cracked in my strong jaw, and I spat out whatever remained of the fish. I threw my gloves away and wiped the blood off of my upper lip; the feeling of hunger still remained but wasn’t as unbearable. I opened my parasol and disappeared into the sharp turns and jagged rock of the unspoken alleys of Essex.
His calloused fingers reach into the bins and examined soiled lace that reeked—oddly enough—of fish.
“Seems like we’ve got ourselves ‘nother beast in this town,” He hummed as he pocketed the gloves, instantly recognizing the package.
His eyes widened, and his crooked teeth flashed an unruly, savage smile. He took the gloves out of his pocket and inhaled the scent of fragrance, blood, and sea.
“Yer all mine, little lady,” He chuckled and squinted his eyes as the sun shone brightly, illuminating all that was hidden.

"I'll take... haddock, two fillets of sea bass aaaand... a lobster tail if you have some in today please!"
The vendor gazed at the ingredients his customer had chosen. As he weighed and packaged the fish, he couldn't help but wonder what they planned to make with them. Would they boil it and serve it with a delicate sauce, or would they bake it with herbs and spices for a touch of flavor? Perhaps they'd fry it, crispy and golden, for a satisfying crunch. The fish seller often dreamed of indulging in such luxurious ingredients, but alas, they were too expensive for him to enjoy on a regular basis. Instead, he contented himself with selling them to others, basking in their satisfaction as they savored the flavors of the fresh fish.
Tumblr media
"Lobster Thermidor?" He glanced at the customer, a fair looking individual with a confident gait, and wondered if they truly appreciated the delicacy they held in their hands. To the fish seller, each piece of fish represented a moment of indulgence, a chance to bask in the simple joys of life. "...or Broiled Lobster Tail? Either way, I hope you enjoy it."

Animal Crossing Fish Dish Friday - #10
Brought to you by a marine biologist who believes in you - you can fillet your own fish!
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Karei no Nitsuke
Tumblr media
In ACNH: 1. Get the DIY by catching a Dab. 2. Cook at the stove with 1 Dab.
In Real Life: from Japan
Species of Choice: If you want to stay true to the ACNH dish, then you're going to want to choose a flatfish - flounder, halibut, sole, plaice, dab, whatever your native flatfish is called. However, the dish's fish can be substituted with basically any whitefish. So, you can switch out your flatfish for gadids (cods, haddock, pollocks), and it will taste really fantastic!
Other Ingredients:
Ginger Root Shallots Soy Sauce Mirin Sugar
Here's the recipe + serve with steamed veggies and rice!
This is another whole fish dish, which I know not many people are too keen on. Yes, it can be a bit awkward if your food is looking back at you. I'd recommend 1 of 2 ways to avoid this. You can purchase your fish as fillets - this method is easier, but you are paying for that convenience! OR You could also do it yourself - which is cheaper!
Karei no Nitsuke, and its derivatives, are made with the whole fish. As you may have heard, bones carry a lot of nutrients and are used to make soup stocks the old fashioned way (before we had seasoning packets and such). So, to cook fish whole is to capture those benefits, and probably also make two or more meals out of one fish, limiting waste. The meat is then picked off the bones during the meal, which could aid in slowing down those of us who wolf our food. Still...if you're not going to eat a fish dish because it features the whole animal, then those points are moot! So! How to fillet your own fish!
youtube
It's just so much easier to show you how to do it with this really fast video. Here are my tips and tricks for how I fillet, and as you do it, you'll get better and faster at it with your own little habits.
~You want to feel the knife bump up against the bones as you go by, however, be aware this will hurt your knife over time. ~ALWAYS use a very sharp knife. It may help to have a knife dedicated to fish filleting or have a knife sharpener in the house. ~Accept that you WILL mess up. Not every fillet is going to be perfect, especially not your first dozen. Practice is the only way to get good. If you miss some meat, get it once you're done with the main fillet. ~"Round" fish, or fish that aren't flat like flounders, are done in basically the same way, except there are only two fillets (this has to do with anatomy and ease of cutting). See the video below to see the difference:
youtube
~The guy in the video says to cut behind the fish's "ear" which is...not correct. What he's really doing is cutting past the operculum, or gill covers, of the fish's head. You want to follow the shape of the operculum to ensure you don't miss any meat. ~You WILL have bones in your fillet - even the best chefs sometimes miss them. Once you have cut your fillet off, inspect for bones by rubbing the fillet and pressing into the meat. You will feel the bones if they are there. You can use tweezers to pick them out, or if you got the whole rib cage, use the removal method in the video.
And there you have it! Bon apetite!

Got a MungoTeazer hc for ya! They were dating before they even knew they were dating. Like they were cuddling and affectionate, exchanging “I love you”s and insisting to other cats that they weren’t a couple.
Oh, I 100% agree.
When they first meet, there's actually a fair amount of hostility, because Teazer is crashing one of Jerrie's heists and reaping the rewards for herself. They begin as rivals who both work seperate enterprises. They both live in Kensington, so they cross paths often. Sometimes they try to steal from each other, trick each other, or straight up sabotage the entire operation in order for the other cat to fail.
After a while though, they become a bit more friendly. They have more banter, and I think sometimes they feel a little disappointed when their rival doesn't show up to distrupt their plan. Maybe there's an incident or two. Rumpleteazer tries to rob a house in Cottesmore, only for the homeowner's bulldog to wake up. It's only after Teazer almost has her tail bitten off that Jerrie swoops in and gives her a helping hand to escape.
He says something in passing about how dangerous it is to pull off heists alone and that she really shouldn't be working by herself. Obviously she scoffs at him, and the two of them go their seperate ways. Teazer is disappointed that she wasn't able to nab any jewellry before the dog started barking, but on the trot home, she realises her bag is a little heavier than it should be. She checks inside to find the pearls she didn't have time to grab have somehow worked their way inside.
After that, whenever they cross paths, they start working together. They make plans to do heists as a team, and maybe even decide to set up shop at Rumpleteazer's home in Victoria Grove. They start building up a joint stash of items in a crawlspace under the attic, and Jerrie practically moves in. It's just a friendly arrangement, of course.
They might as well eat from the same bowl, steal an extra fillet of haddock from the chippy to share, and groom each other to save time when they have the peace and quiet. Sleeping in the same cat bed is just good finances - you know? Just so they don't have to splash the cash to buy a second one. It's just good economics.
Plus, they've never been touch-shy. Jerrie's always been rowdy and loves a good playfight. And Teazer has always been cuddly and won't refuse a hug. Jerrie loves to nuzzle her and Teazer likes throwing herself into his arms. He'll carry her around on piggyback and they'll hold hands if they're trying to outrun someone together. They make each other laugh like crazy, too. Jerrie's a snorter and Teazer's a shrieker but it doesn't stop them from laughing together like a pair of school kids. And it's not just that. Whenever a heist goes well, they utterly shower each other with praise. Jerrie calls Teazer a miracle-worker, and Teazer calls Jerrie absolutely incredible. It's all ''You're amazing'' and ''You're a stunner'' and ''How did I ever get by without you?''
It doesn't matter how many times they reiterate to other cats that they're just friends. To everyone else, they're clearly courting.
I think between the two of them, Teazer recognises her feelings first. Maybe Victoria brings up the prospect of kittens in passing, or Bomba gives her a wink and a nudge about a particularly adorable head bunt Jerrie gives her, and it makes Teazer realise what everyone else sees. They don't exactly talk about it, though. She's too nervous to bring it up. Over the months they've known each other, they've started confiding in each other more, and they've built up a pretty strong friendship. Teazer doesn't want to lose that by pushing on boundaries.
One stormy night, though, after a particularly successful heist, the two of them run home in the rain and quickly seek shelter in the attic. The lights are dim, the bed is warm and surrounded by blankets, and the satisfaction of a good night's burglary has them both on cloud nine. They flop down together, get to some quick grooming, dry off, and just chill out. Teazer is cuddled up to Jerrie's side, and his chest is heaving still from all that running. She thinks 'fuck it', grabs the fabric of his top, and gives him a quick kiss, followed up by a joke or a pun or something to lessen the blow if Jerrie freaks out over it. But he doesn't freak out. He just loops his finger through her pearls and pulls her back in for another one.
After that, they make it official, but like you said, I don't think anyone in the Junkyard is surprised by it. I think the only shock comes from all the cats who already thought they were mates.

Otsumami Set (Makes 4 Servings)
Tumblr media
We bring you this recipe from our panel, “Anime Foodies: Laid-Back Camp Season 2”.
As part of the birthday celebrations for Nadeshiko and Aoi in Episode 12, the other girls prepare a set of three “otsumami” along with the other dishes that are designed to pair well with alcohol as a kind gesture to their booze-loving teacher, Ms. Toba.
Caprese Salad
2 Large – Red Tomatoes
2 Balls (8 oz.-Size) – Mozzarella
Handful – Basil
1 TBSP – Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Pinches – Black Pepper
Slice the tomatoes and mozzarella into 1 cm (c. 1/3 inch) thick slices.
Arrange in rows with tomato, mozzarella, and then 1 large/2 small basil leaves and repeat the process until you are out of ingredients.
Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil evenly across the rows of ingredients.
Sprinkle over the black pepper and serve.
Tumblr media
White Fish in Foil Packet
2 Thick-Cut, Skin-On Fillets – Whitefish Such as Halibut or Sea Bass (Haddock, Cod)
3 oz. – Shimeji Mushrooms
8-10 – Cherry Tomatoes (Grape Tomatoes)
1/2 – Red Bell Pepper
1/4 – Small White/Yellow Onion
1/2 TSP – Kosher Salt
1/2 TSP – Black Pepper
Check your fillets for any leftover bones or scales.
Prepare a foil packet with double-layered heavy duty aluminum foil.
Spray the foil with cooking spray and lay the fillets skin-side down in the center of the packet.
Season the fillets with some of the salt and pepper.
Slice the red pepper and onions into thin strips.
Separate the mushrooms and chop off any dirty bases.
Place the mushrooms and tomatoes in sections of the packet and spread the sliced peppers and onions across the other ingredients.
Season with the remaining salt and pepper and seal the packet.
Place the packet in a skillet over medium-high heat for 2 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 10-12 minutes depending on the thickness of your fillets.
Remove from the heat and let sit for 2 minutes.
Open the packet and serve.
Tumblr media
Bacon-Wrapped Onigiri
1 Cup (Dried) – Japanese Short Grain White Rice
2 TSP – Toasted Sesame Seeds
1 TSP – Kosher Salt
15 Slices – Thin-Cut Bacon
Prepare the rice per the instructions provided here.
Place the rice in a mixing bowl and mix in the sesame seeds and salt.
Allow the rice to cool for 5 minutes and then form into 5 small discs.
Allow the discs to set for 5 minutes.
Set three strips of bacon down with the pieces crossing each other in the middle to make the shape of an asterisk.
Set the rice disc into the center of the bacon slices where they meet.
Wrap each piece of bacon around the disc one at a time, trimming any excess lengths of bacon as necessary and spreading the bacon as it is wrapped to ensure the rice is entirely covered by the meat.
Place the wrapped rice discs with the seam side down in a pan over medium heat, cover, and cook for 7 minutes.
Flip to the other side, cover, and cook another 7 minutes.
Uncover and continue to cook on each side if additional crispiness is desired on the bacon.
Remove from the pan, allow to cool for 2 minutes, and serve.
