I found the Ruddigore cartoon through your fanart (love your work btw) and can I just say that this cartoon has so much meme potential because of how topsy-turvy the plot and characters are? I mean if the Dr Livesy walk from the old Treasure Island cartoon can become a meme, so can this. But it’ll be a long time that someone picks it up and make a meme out of it on TikTok or whatever.

it's a lot to hope for but I definitely agree with you about meme potential
and thanks so much, I'm glad you liked my art (and that you found a new cartoon because of it)!

Automania 2000
John Halas and Joy Batchelor
UK, 1963
Another married couple making excellent films, Halas and Batchelor started out by making war information and propaganda shorts for Great Britain during WW2, and later made the famous animated adaptation of Animal Farm. More on that some other time- in this post I want to show you Automania 2000.
The year 2000 has come and gone- look, some of you are Noughties Kids, but I remember the fantastic dreams and predictions for the millenium. Everyone would have flying cars! We'd live on the moon!
Unfortunately Halas and Batchelor's anti-consumerist satirical prediction turned out more accurate. Well, it's not quite as bad as they drew it...yet. But if it seemed like cars and wasteful consumption of superfluous goods were starting to become a problem back in 1963, then 2022 is so much worse.
H&B make their point about reckless supply and manipulated demand using excellent graphics. The film artfully mixes the textures of paper cut outs and painted backgrounds with the clean colours of cel animation. Every frame is a little masterpiece of graphic design.
The dystopia is horrifyingly beautiful.

Most traditional of the cartoon producers are Halas and Batchelor, whose Animal Farm was in the Disney tradition. Their graphic progress since then may be exemplified by the Hoffnung Symphony Orchestra, a bright, après-Punch piece spiritedly solving the problem which gave every Hollywood cartoon unit, from Disney to U.P.A., such difficulty; how to reconcile emphatic laugh gags with smartish-post-Disney graphics. Their Automania 2000 is a Tati-spirited spoof on technology and piecemeal planning, with cars enjoying a population explosion and covering the globe with a mile-high traffic jam.

izi's Random Movie Reviews
Animal Farm, 1954 dir. Joy Batchelor and John Halas
This post contains spoilers.
Tumblr media
"This movie is agonizing from an outsider's perspective because the farmer is just like the animals."
When I was in middle school, we had different groups in my English class to read certain classics of literature. While I wasn't in their group (and I still regretfully haven't taken the time to read the book), I was always fascinated by what the Animal Farm group was up to in their readings. I've grown to understand this literature as a means of portraying politics and the "human" condition (only put into quotes because this media is about animals and not people). To sit and watch this movie, especially during the time of America's uncertainty but undeniable corruption of politics, is eye-opening. Animal Farm has stood the test of time by always being relevant (being an animated film from the 50s also fills me with many questions about how this was received). History is doomed to repeat without proper discipline and understanding of perspectives and equity. I think that is what Animal Farm represents.
The animals started their revolution strong but eventually became what they were warned not to become (the farmer). Animal Farm became a clear visual of how important it is to keep your humility and remember what started the revolution in the first place. Animal Farm had established rules that reminded them of what they were there for and who they represented (animals, not humans). Over time, with the dictatorship of Napoleon and soon other pigs, those were rewritten. This movie is agonizing from an outsider's perspective because the farmer is just like the animals. The farmer starts the film by showing he's overworked. He then reflects the behavior he is subjected to onto the animals, and in turn, the animals do it to themselves in a vicious cycle. Despite going through so much hurt and dismay, many animals (especially poor little Benjamin) never lost sight of what being an animal and a part of that community means.
For the film (and I'm assuming the book) to end just like it started, with a revolution driven for change, provides hope of breaking the cycle bit by bit, until proper rights and freedom are restored for the animals. At the end of the movie, the narrator shares that the animals don't even quite know if there's any point in doing what they're doing and how it will affect their near future or the end of their life, but they still know it's something they have to do. That is something that can be said for every generation. Generations work hard to live the life they have always wanted to live, to embrace their freedoms more than the generation could before them, and only hope to give space for the next generation to have their prosperity too.
This movie was beautifully animated (the animals were so animal-like in nature, it was very charming). The backgrounds were beautifully rendered to help set me in the space of Animal Farm. I really enjoyed the limited dialogue and the elaborate soundtrack that carried the emotion, voice, and action of the animals. It's been a long time coming for me to finally experience this narrative, and now that I'm not in middle school, I feel like I can understand it so much better. Hopefully, now I can borrow the book and read about more details that may have been missing from the film. A must-watch (and/or read) for everyone.
8/10

"Viejitas pero con un gran mensaje"
Rebelión en la granja (1954)
"Una antitesis de los clasicos de Disney"
Tumblr media

Animal Farm

Synopsis
The farm animals’ leader, the Ol’ Major, realizes that humans are taking great advantage of them and receiving nothing in exchange, technically abusing all with no exceptions. So, the best they can do is defend themselves and stop the two-legged beings, and they start a rebellion. After taking control of the farm, the animals created laws and an entire movement called Animalism; the idea was that animals should be free and equal among themselves. They kept defending their farm and started building a Windmill. Napoleon and Snowball became crucial pigs on the farm and fought each other. Napoleon used the hounds to chase away Snowball, and another pig, Squealer, says their own kin had betrayed them. This gave Napoleon power over the other animals, and they started changing their rules. By the end, Napoleon and Squealer end up making trades with the humans and even behave like them, taking the lead and once again taking advantage of the rest of the animals.
This film critiques using allegories, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. Representating communism and referencing Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky’s rivality, and even Pravda, a manipulative newspaper that had much power in people’s opinion. They had an oppressor and fought back to make their own laws and system to get a new head that would give them the same conditions.
Technique
American animation references were used. Still used the technicolour and multiplane camera. Jhon F. Reed who was a Walt Disney Studios director was hired, as well as an 80 animators crew from The Rank Organisation.
Tumblr media
Reception
Animal Farm had the intention to tell a different version of the Russian Revolution history and make it a way that anyone could understand. It became successful after the war when the communist ideology was in a terrible spot where everyone was promoting its opposal. This film was still used as a reference during the Cold War, and opened debate on English left politics.

It’s day 19 of the #7inchvinylchallenge by @dontpanicrecords and @phil_rotation: Cartoon Cover. The Clash - English Civil War b/w Pressure Drop (CBS, 1979) The cover, of course comes from the classic animated adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm by John Halas & Joy Batchelor, made in 1954. The a-side is an adaptation of an American Civil War song, updated to reflect class tensions in the UK in the late 70s. The lyric “Your face was blue in the light of the screen/As we watched the speech of an animal scream” ties in directly with the artwork. The b-side is a killer cover of the Toots & The Maytals song. At the time, a non-LP-b-side from The Clash was like gold! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #julyvinylchallenge #45rpm #45rpmclub #seveninchvinyl #seveninchsingles https://www.instagram.com/p/CgNZNwygURk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hayvan Çiftliği Filminin Çekimleri İçin Çalışmalar Başladı
Tumblr media

When did you find out about Ruddigore and what do you think of Sir Ruthven?
I found the Halas & Batchelor cartoon version in late 2019 via the animation obsessive twitter. My sister actually forwarded it to me and then we watched it. A few minutes in I realized they were singing actual opera, then I looked into it and discovered it was Gilbert & Sullivan - though like most of the general public I only knew about The Mikado and Pirates of Penzance - and I literally only knew anything about H.M.S. Pinafore because of the Cape Feare episode of the Simpsons.
So I had no idea what Ruddigore was, but of course I looked into it, I learned that actual D'Oyly Carte players were voicing the cartoon, and that led me to finding the gsarchive.net/ website, which had more information than I knew what to do with, until now I've listened to all of them and I can never go back to how I was before. Whoops!
As for Sir Ruthven - as a character I like that he tried to run from an inherited curse but it caught up with him, and I like even more that he used semantic logic, trolling if you will, to dispel his family's curse. And the fact that no one before him ever came up with the same solution, and even more so that it worked, I think he's a special bean. None of the G&S characters have an immense amount of depth, with the possible exception of the ones in the Yeoman of the Guard (and Iolanthe, though that's more my doing than Gilbert's), but it's fun to expand on them - who's going to complain, the dead composer and lyricist?
I still like the Robin design from the Halas & Batchelor cartoon, but I really don't like their version of Ruthven. I know it's supposed to look "horrid" and everything, because now he's a bad baronet, but what's with the hair? It's mostly the hair, I hate the hair.
I don’t have much of an interest in adapting this, because it’s already been done, but there is a bit from the end of act 1 that wasn’t used in the cartoon that kind of intrigues me, and that would require a Robin/Ruthven under duress. I mean, we’ve seen Robin has a temper. It’d be funny if for all his claiming to be a “timid youth,” he’s still a bit of a bastard. I mean, he did fake his own death and leave his little brother to helm the curse. I’ve actually wondered if the only reason he didn’t die, as per the witch’s curse, was because he was committing a crime in perpetuity by living with a false identity. But that might be reading into it too much.
Tumblr media
Regardless, I like Sir Ruthven, and I’ll always like Ruddigore because it was the jumping off point for my discovering this whole wonderful collection of music and stories.

Animal Farm is probably his slightest book; one can't expect too much from an allegory in which the masses are represented by animals and their betters by man. The cartoon is competently handled, but tells us nothing that we don't know already: Freedom, good, Stalinism, bad.

277. The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (1976)
Tumblr media
7/10
Sorry for the late update, everyone! My air conditioner broke yesterday, and I ended up collapsing in exhaustion from the heat in the afternoon. By the time I woke up, I’d completely forgotten about everything I was supposed to do!
At any rate, in this Asterix movie, he and Obelix must complete twelve impossible tasks set for them by Caesar. This is supposed to prove the rumors among the Romans that they are actually gods, and therefore cannot be successfully invaded.
A solid movie in every way. There's no bad musical numbers, and the animation quality is a big step up from the last two Asterix movies.
