The greatest thing that I have achieved  8/10
Chapter title: Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars Summary: After Haley’s death, Aaron isn’t sure how to move on from the grief. Then one night, months later he finds himself falling into bed with Emily, his best friend and that changes everything. Word Count: 2,1k Rating: Explicit Warnings for this chapter: Grief, pregnancy, feelings, fluff
For days after Aaron’s confession things had been tense between them. Emily had replayed his words over and over in her mind, her brain still trying to convince herself that it wasn’t real, while her heart told her something different. He had never lied to her, and now, at 27 weeks pregnant he definitely didn’t have a reason to lie to her.
She knows that he wouldn’t hurt her, that their friendship was a lot stronger than that, had only gotten stronger since she got pregnant. She knew she wasn’t giving him the credit he deserved.
And even though the doubts are still there, sometimes screaming at her, she slowly lets herself relax into him. She lets herself go to him, leans into his touch and when he looks at her with wondering eyes she smiles.
They weren’t there yet, she wasn’t there yet, but she wanted to be.
*
“What about Mary?” Aaron asks one night as he paints the nursery the shade of light yellow that they had chosen for the walls. She was nearing 30 weeks and Emily had started to stress about everything they still needed to get done, nursery included.
“No.” Emily shakes her head as she stands beside him painting another wall even though he had tried to get her to sit down, had tried to get her out of the room even though the paint was pregnancy friendly and the window was wide open. “I like Anna?”
“I dated an Anna before Haley, didn’t end well.” He smiled but kept a careful eye on Emily as she laughed.
“Okay not Anna.” She agreed, she could feel his eyes on her even as she stood turned away from him. “Stop it.” She grinned as she turned to face him, the roller still in hand.
“Stop what?” He couldn’t seem to look away from her, the white shirt that tightened over her belly and loose shorts showing off long legs, some paint on her cheek from where it had splattered. She was gorgeous and happy and he could feel his breath hitching.
“Stop looking at me like I’ll go into labor at any second, I’m fine.” She dipped her fingers in the jar of paint and splattered some at him playfully.
“Hey!” He laughed as the paint hit his cheek and shoulder.
“Yellow looks good on you.” She smirked and dipped her fingers in the paint again, a laugh escaping her when he was quick to grab her wrist to keep her from getting more paint on him. He picked up the brush lying beside the paint jar with an arched eyebrow.
“Don’t you dare Aaron Hotchner.” She squealed when he held her tighter and then proceeded to paint a stripe across her forehead. Emily laughed, she laughed harder than she had in a long time and when he joined she felt it in her entire body.
“You look good in yellow too.” He tells her once they’ve both calmed, the proximity of their bodies only registering when he feels her belly press against him. Their eyes meet and suddenly any trace of humor is gone.
Emily sucks in a breath when he gently pushes some hair away from her face, her own fingers itching to touch him. Her eyes dart between his eyes and lips, she knew that he had been waiting for her to come to him but when he moved away with a gentle clearing of his throat, all she wants is to pull him back to her. She doesn’t though and steps back as well.
“What about Allison? Ally Prentiss Hotchner?” She asks instead and his head whips around to face her so fast she’s surprised he didn’t pull a muscle.
“Hotchner?” He asks and it dawns on her that he hadn’t thought that far ahead.
“Of course it’s going to be Hotchner.” She smiles when she sees the way his face lights up, but he doesn’t say anything. Instead he grabs the roller again and turns to the wall.
“Ally, yeah Ally is good.”
*
“So Jack, what do you want for your birthday? Six year olds deserve some good toys.” Emily smiled as she washed up from dinner.
 “Do you love my daddy?”
The question, seemingly coming out of nowhere made Emily drop the plate she was rinsing in the sink and she turned towards Jack sitting by the counter playing with his superhero toys. They were alone, Aaron having to spend the night at the office and as much as Emily loved spending time with Jack, she hadn’t expected the observant boy to ask her something like that. She wiped her hands on a dish towel and sat down on the stool next to Jack who kept his dark eyes on her.
“Is this something you’ve thought about?” She asked gently and the young boy shrugged.
“Mommy told me once that babies were made out of love. And daddy is always happy when you’re around, and love makes you happy right?”
Emily nodded along as she listened to a child trying to make sense of something that adults couldn’t even make sense of most of the time.
“And you seem happy when daddy is around. And daddy put Peanut in your belly, so if love makes a baby, and love makes you happy, doesn’t that mean that you love him?”
She looked at Jack, something warm inside her chest as he looked at her, eyes like his father but a gentleness to him that screamed of Haley and she couldn’t help the smile on her face.
“Yeah honey, I love your dad.” She admitted and she realized that not only was this the first time she told somebody else, but it was also the first time she uttered the words. “Is that okay?” She asked then because throughout all of this, Jack had been a piece of the puzzle that needed to fit.
Jack smiled, a toothy grin on his face as he nodded.
“Yes.” His eyes moved from her face to her belly before looking up at her again. “I love Peanut, is it okay if I love you as well?”
“Oh sweetheart,” Emily brushed her hand over his cheek. “Love is always okay. And I love you too.”
Jack beamed at her before picking up his toys again.
“Do you think we could have a bouncy castle for the party?”
The switch was almost too fast for her, and for a moment she was confused. She looked at Jack who seemed engrossed with his toys, like their moment never even happened. She stood up and kissed his forehead with a smile before going back to the dishes.
“I think that one might be a hard sell, honey. But why don’t we ask your dad together?”
“Awesome!”
It wasn’t much later that she got Jack ready for bed and read him a story which he fell asleep in the middle off. Her mind was still reeling from the conversation with Jack, her heart at the point of aching from the way it clenched with adoration for the young boy. Then he was asleep and she was alone with her thoughts.
She sat on the couch and gently rubbed over her bump as her mind wandered. She knew she was in love with Aaron, that she had been for longer than she cared to admit. She knew that she had stubbornly tried to ignore it and refused to admit it to herself, much less to anybody else. But she also knew that she hadn’t been fooling anyone. How could she when all she wanted was to be with Aaron, possible consequences be damned. And now, when she finally had said the words out loud, it was all she could think about.
She loved him, and she couldn’t wait to tell him.
*
When Aaron walks through the door he isnt surprised to find it dark and quiet except for the low sound of the TV. It was already late and he knew that Jack went to sleep hours ago, and with Emily’s pregnancy taking it out on her he knew that he’d find her asleep on the couch. He walks through the house quietly as he makes it to the living room, a smile on his face when he sees her, sprawled out, shirt riding up over her baby bump, a low snoring coming from her that she refused to admit to even after Derek had videotaped her on the plane once.
He grabbed the blanket from the armrest of the couch and carefully put it over her. He knew better than to wake her when she was asleep and as much as he would have preferred her to be in bed, he didn’t want to risk the wrath of Emily for waking her up. It didn’t seem to matter though because as he arranged the blanket she stirred, followed by her eyelids fluttering open.
“You’re home.” She smiled sleepily.
“Shh, go back to sleep Em.” He brushed some hair away from her face and she leaned into the touch.
“I tried to stay up.” She said softly before looking down at where he was still rearranging the blanket over her body.
“You know you need your sleep.” He sighs at her stubbornness but stops in his tracks when she suddenly takes his hand in hers, her gaze intense as she stares up at him.
“I love you.” She blurts it out and for a second everything seems to stop. She had planned a speech, planned to tell him everything she was feeling but as he looked at her with adoration as he fussed over the blanket she couldn’t remember a single thing she had practiced. “I- I love you.” She says again and watches as Aaron sits back against the coffee table that she’s sure isn’t supposed to hold his weight.
He wasn’t sure if his ears were playing tricks on him, or if she was somehow still asleep and dreaming. He knew that she had let go of some of her fears about them as a couple, but he hadn’t expected this, hadn’t expected her to go from poorly hidden looks and gentle smiles to love in the few hours they had been apart. But that didn’t stop his smile, or the way his heart clenched in his chest as he continued to look at her.
Emily saw his smile and it felt like she could breathe again. She reached for him, grabbed his tie and pulled him towards her and he immediately moved with her. When they kissed she was sure that everything else faded away, that this was it. They would make it, because how could they not when being with him felt this good?
“I love you too.” He whispered once they pulled apart and Emily kissed him again. “You sure are quite the romantic.”
“Oh shut up.” She pushed at his shoulder at his gentle teasing but just as quickly pulled him back to her. “Sorry for taking so long to admit it. For being stubborn and scared and not trusting you.”
“It’s okay.” He assures her, hand stroking over her cheek to feel her soft skin. “I knew you’d get there.”
Haley,
It’s Jack’s birthday next week and I know that he will have his moments where he’ll miss you like crazy. We both will, I’m sure. He’s getting a bouncy castle, I’m not sure how he managed to win me over, but I’m sure that the smile that is the splitting image of yours had something to do with it.
Emily says hi. There’s less than three months to go but I think she’s getting tired of being pregnant, of the limitations of it. She’s never been good at staying still.
She told me that she loves me, and we’re doing this, for real. I know that you’re up there rolling your eyes at us taking so long, but I think we both needed this time. If you were here you’d tease us, probably joke about our denial with Derek or celebrate with Penelope. Actually, I’m pretty sure that you’d do both, just like I would have if things were reversed.
I hate that you’re not here, Haley. I hate that I feel like my life is coming together, I almost feel ashamed of how happy I am. But Dave told me a while ago that you would have wanted me to move on, and I know he’s right, I know that you would have pushed me into Emily’s arms months ago already. I wasn’t sure I’d get to this point in my life, but I’m happy that I am. I miss you so much.
Wish you were here, always
Aaron.

Resurrection - drabble
Tumblr media
Rating: General audience. Someone singing in the shower. Hymns. French. Description: Logan Tremblay is not the only one who messes around with song lyrics. Set around the time of part xxi in Sweater Weather by @lumosinlove. Thanks to @lumosinlove, @hazelnoot-analyst, @noots-fic-fests, and @1-800-shedevil (line divider)
Tumblr media
Finn O'Hara grabbed the body wash bottle, spun around on his heel, brought the container up to his mouth, and started belting, "Res-sur-rection TIME! Come on!" A deeper, false-baritone voice comes out of the guest bedroom, "It's a resurrection." "Yahoo!", yelled two voices in near perfect unison and harmony. In the kitchen, Leo looks over at Logan with a look of shock. "Alex est ici? Depuis quand?" Logan replies, "Hier soir. C'était presque minuit. Il n'a pas voulu resté à l'hôtel avec Haley et Ramsey."
Tumblr media
Head canon that Finn randomly singing bits of church songs or playing with lyrics is so normal that Leo doesn't even bat an eye at that, he just thought he would have heard Alex come in. All of the O'Hara's are lovely, but none of them are what you could call quiet.
Y'see, Alex and Finn would get packed off to their church youth group as kids to expend any extra energy, and also sang in the choir until they left for college. Alex sang in the choir at university each year when the hockey season had ended. The youth group songs being catchy as heck, the greatest hits would inevitably get air time when Finn and Alex were together. Their rendition of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus would bring you to tears. On the other hand, OKN was a bad influence on Finn, and the first time he came home and sang Res-erection-time in the shower over Thanksgiving break, he had to clean up all of the coffee Haley spat out over the breakfast island. Logan helped.

Review #96: Automatic For The People, R. E. M.
Are you very depressed? Me too. Automatic For The People is rich, beautiful, tonally downer music for sad people who occasionally have bright sunny days.
It describes such a complex sadness, and that’s something I love about it. In Nightswimming, we aren’t just swimming at night, we are “pining for the moon”. Who among us sad losers doesn’t pine for the moon from time to time? Hmm? And we are doing so alongside glorious strings, oddly chirpy piano, and what I believe to be a damn OBOE. How often do we get to hear an oboe? Do you know? I do. It’s not that often. It’s not.
I have complicated feelings about Everybody Hurts. I was only four when this record came out. But this song didn’t go anywhere for a really long time. It was constantly on the radio well into my teens. The riff becomes very monotonous. What is supposed to be a comfort, a message that you’re not alone, can kind of eventually sound like, hey get over it because your problems are the same as everybody else’s, everyone has heard this song too, and everyone kind of hates it by now. It’s been a long ass time since I’ve spent time with it, and it might just have been long enough. Let’s try again in a few years.
I have always liked R.E.M. and a lot of their songs well enough, but maybe never known their albums inside out. More like, well versed in their radio hits, and I definitely always had an attitude about them. I wouldn’t admit to liking them, kinda thing. Imagine my surprise when I stuck this album on for reviewing purposes and I started singing all the words to all the album tracks? I knew them all. All of them! Suddenly I was taken back to Sunday afternoons in my house when it was time to clean, or cook, or whatever you know, just boring nothing Sunday stuff, and I guess this one was one that my Mom liked. It must have reverberated through the house and I must have absorbed it. This is the way I’ve come to know and love a few artists and albums that I believe I previously held disdain for. Over time, I have reluctantly accepted that they’re just pretty fucking good, and I can’t hate it just because my Mother likes it. Simon and Garfunkel being probably the greatest, and most painful example. Sigh.
As annoying as this might be, Drive, the opening track, is pretty joyous to relive. I mean, it’s the opposite of joyous in that it’s a huge dose of frowny-face sounds, but joyous in that it’s a song about challenging the status-quo by voting (seriously, it is — they were a big part of the Rock the Vote campaign and some of the lines are very pointed towards Bush Sr, who was running for a second term), but also questioning your sanity and driving around to uh, feel better. Relatable. It also references another song, a mechanism that I delight in — Rock Around the Clock, by Bill Haley and the Comets, if you’re wondering.
R.E.M. stand out with their use of mandolin and other not so typically utilized instruments, and it’s always really funny to me that they were so popular in top 40 music when they just, aren’t pop music at all. But that isn’t a bad thing. The bright sunny day for your average sad sack lives in The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, where you even hear Michael Stipe laugh his way through the lyrics. It’s upbeat, it’s absurd, and it’s also fucking great. It’s fun as hell to sing. Lastly, I may be in the minority, but I love instrumental tracks (when they’re good), and New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 is two minutes and thirteen seconds of someone letting me fall asleep on them like a cat while they gently play with my hair. I could listen to it on repeat forever and I’d never be sick of it. It’s so beautiful. In my incessant need to know everything about every song, I have learned that a longer version exists (may I hear it?), and that it has never been performed live (may we hear it?).
I guess my Mom just really liked them. She grew up playing a few different stringed instruments but is deaf in one ear and can’t hold a tune to save her life. Still, once, she took me and that shitty boyfriend to our hyper local village music store (it’s long gone but was such a gem), I think so I could buy some guitar strings. The woman picked up a mandolin, and played a few chords perfectly. Our jaws hit the floor. Every time I hear the mandolin in one of their songs, I think of that moment and how cool she was to me in it.
They will always get bonus points for two additional things: Mike Mills is a consistent staple in the modern day Big Star lineup, with R.E.M. being one of the bands responsible for their later resurgence by citing their influence. Actually, I’m only just realizing this, but I HEAR IT IN ALL THAT MANDOLIN. Holy shit.
So, okay, I’ll always love them for that. But also, they are fictional character Ben Wyatt’s favorite band in the dorkiest and most pure, sincere way ever. Could a depressed person make this?
I had no idea I had this much to say about R.E.M. I’m a little embarrassed.

Hey idk if your request are open but can you write a Peyton Sawyer blurb where it takes place 3x15-16 in the time capsule season three, the reader outed herself and admitted to liking Peyton, because she literally didn’t think it’d be open until 2055. And Lucas gets mad she likes Peyton but Peyton comforts her and likes her to? Thank you
OMG omg oooh get ready
I am who I am
Pairing: Peyton Sawyer x Fem reader
Description: You come out during your time capsule video and tell of your crush on Peyton, leading to the worst week then the best day of your life
Tumblr media
You look up seeing Nathan on the screen, glaring daggers into him after he says that being married to Haley was his biggest regret. You feel your heart drop watching Brook's video hugging her as she cries followed by anger at the school for what happened to Jimmy but you feel your heart sink to your stomach and your anxiety go into overdrive when you see yourself. You stand frozen as your capsule plays terrified that your two biggest secrets were going to be exposed not just to your friends and the girl you fell in love with who was one of your longest and closest friends but also to every single person in school, knowing you were going to be bullied even more than you were "I knew I was different but I never knew how much till I fell in love with someone but I know I wouldn't be accepted and I know for a chance that...she doesn't like me back that's one of the fears when you're gay... especially as a woman". Your nerves kick in making you run outside, throwing up in a bush as you break down and sob having all the thoughts you already overthought since you found out about your sexuality flow in your mind, you go to the bathroom wiping your face with paper towels while hiding in a stall trying to keep everything in, feeling drained and numb from the emotional breakdown slowly feeling your body and mind calm down until you walk in the hall, an arm touching your shoulder making you tense up turning to see Lucas. "Why didn't you tell me you liked her?" you sigh as you squeeze your hands "Not only because i knew you liked her even loved her but so I could keep my friends and family because not everyone is going to accept a gay person". You stare at the ground afraid of losing one of your greatest friends, jumping when you hear him hit the locker "You could have told me! I knew something was going on with you, I thought that maybe she intimidated you or scared you but the whole time you've..." he punches the locker making you fall on the ground as tears come back. You run home thankful that your mom was out of town as you cried in your bathroom, changing and cleaning until you hear a knock at your door, your heart stops when you see Peyton. "Are you okay? I saw what happened and drove here" you stare at the floor after letting her in "I understand if you don't want to be around me beca-" " I would never do that especially to someone I feel the same for just as long" you look up hugging her until you pull away sharing a kiss spending the night together, walking hand in hand in school with brooke and haley behind the two of you as you get support from classmates and hate from others, the day going well until lucas comes up to the two of you "I was a jerk yesterday and I'm sorry I hope you forgive me" you and peyton look at each other nodding hugging him as he lets a sigh of relief out followed by the three of you smiling when you turn to see nathan apologizing to haley. After getting pushed and even hit by a male classmate you stand up in front of everyone in the cafeteria "Yesterday I came out of the closet, I didn't think equality for gay people would be a thing till God 2055 and from this point on I will not let anyone try to make me be what I am not just for some of you to feel comfortable, I am who I am no matter what!" you earn a standing ovation as lunch finishes leaving with peyton to have a movie night with her at her house.

Some Stardew Valley Bachelorette Singing HCs
I was planning on the bachelorettes coming later, but then I had an idea for Haley, and it could not wait. So, without further ado, here it is! Link to the bachelors here!
Haley
I love Haley (shoutout to the Haley fans), so of course I wanted to give her a nice hc. And I do think she'd have a nice singing voice. A bit higher? I'm not sure, but I think she'd be able to hit high notes. Torn by Natalie Imbruglia encapsulates what I think perfectly.
Abigail
There're so many songs I could link to Abi, but I'm picky and none get the Exact Voice I'm looking for. But a really good song is Vodka Lemonade by VIAL. Also, Maggot by Slutever has some neat Abigail vibes.
Emily
Emily! I feel like she would sing a lot whenever she's doing something. I let lullaby vibes from her, like she's often humming the tune to Frère Jacque (to Haley's annoyance). As for her voice, I get a lot of Dazey and the Scouts vibes. Check out their songs Maggot and Groan. Also, whatever Will Wood would sound like with a more feminine voice.
Leah
I think Leah would sing a lot while painting/sculpting, and probably joins Elliott when he's drunk in the Saloon. For her voice, I think Amazing Grace by Judy Collins and Kill the Chord by Gaffa Tape Sandy.
Penny
Judy Garland. It's all I'm gonna say. Over The Rainbow is absolutely her voice. She's probably had to sing Vincent or Jas to sleep before, so this is definentely her thing. She can do the higher voices in Mr. Sandman by The Chordettes (I'm so sorry if I butchered the terms there). Vashti Bunyan? Yes.
Maru
Ooh, Maru is hard. Like Shane, not a character I really think would have the greatest singing voice. She's much for focused on her tech than to hone in on her tune. But, I will provide for all the Maru fans. Maybe Dancing In The Street (Stereo) by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas? That or any Penelope Scott song.

Tv shows I like with absolutely bangin soundtracks
Gilmore Girls - Carole King, Grant-Lee Philips (troubadour), The Bangles, The Shins, Sam Philips, Bowie, Blondie, Nancy Sinatra, The Smiths, Talking Heads. Everything from the oldies to current stuff, mostly various flavors of rock. Lots of new wave and post punk vibes. It’s got everything from greatest hits to deep cuts. The whole show is a love letter to (mostly American, mostly white) art/media in general. While I acknowledge plenty of the references do not hold up, I hold that the soundtrack has zero misses in terms of well-chosen bangers.
Sex Education - Ezra Furman does a lot of it, and then they throw in loads of rock and pop classics and current stuff. Violent Femmes, Fleetwood Mac, T.Rex, The Velvet Underground, Brenton Wood, Queen. It’s honestly on par with Gilmore Girls, Furman takes the place of Carole King/Grant-Lee Philips and then everything else is an eclectic and fun mix. It’s more diverse than the GG soundtrack and also has zero misses.
Grace & Frankie - the intro theme is Stealers Wheel but the rest of it is a mix of oldies and current stuff. Eclectic as hell, I adore it. Everything from Gloria Gaynor to Bahamas. A bit of it is covers but they’re good covers. Then you’ve got Any Winehouse, The Milk Carton Kids, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, Alabama Shakes, 7horse, Little Richard, Adele. I think I caught a bit of punk in Frankie’s car in one scene, it might’ve been the Clash but I forget.
Madam Secretary - ok hear me out!!!! You’ve got Andra Day, Adele, Bowie, Peter Frampton, Joni Mitchell, a song from a Sondheim musical, several songs performed by the cast with their vocals and piano (inc. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, a parody of a Billy Joel song, a few Christmas songs…). And then the song of all time, Cemalım (Erkin Koray) which slaps.
Our Flag Means Death - every song in the soundtrack is a banger I just personally always have different associations with them already because they’re always quite important to me before i see the show. Which is why it’s so low on the list for me personally. Also I have spent the last year and a half overthinking every song I hear through the brainrot lens and I associate like a whole other group of songs with that show now instead of the soundtrack. But the actual canon soundtrack is good, I love Lou Reed, Fleetwood Mac, etc.
How to Get Away With Murder - man I didn’t even finish watching this show and some of the songs stuck with me. Mostly IAMX.
What We Do In The Shadows - the fucking intro Norma Tenga song alone changed my life. It goes so goddamn hard. And then you add King Luan, Tol-Puddle Martyrs, Matt Berry’s originals, MUSE!!!!, Echo & The Bunnymen, Haley Heynderickx (who is SURELY also in Sex Ed), THE CRAMPS (perfect choice, I was furious until they finally put ‘em in), Siouxsie and Bauhaus (both almost certainly also in Gilmore Girls, but I could be wrong)… man I could continue from just season 5 alone they really don’t miss.
Community - their soundtrack includes The Police, Florence + The Machine, The Fratellis, The Cranberries, Lord Huron… and of course loads of cast originals.
Criminal Minds - pixies, NIN, the Kinks, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Jeff Buckley… all of this was also on Gilmore Girls. Billy Joel, Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz, Deep Purple, Korn, Boston, Johnny Cash, AC/DC, Bob Dylan, THE BLACK KEYS!!!!, REM, Leonard Cohen, Cage the Elephant… all bangers. Honestly that’s part of what kept me watching for so long.
I’d just like to acknowledge Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Father Brown, and Heartstopper, Derry Girls, the Good Place, and Parks and Rec, which all also have soundtracks.

The First Thing to Go - Baji Keisuke x Reader
Summary: Dealing with the loss of Baji. A conversation with some friends surrounded by memories.
Based on the song First Thing to Go - Haley Williams
Tip Jar / Request are Open (send them in!)
Tumblr media
“You know Y/n,” his voice sounded throughout the empty room, “I think that we should…”
“Baji Keisuke, don’t even think about finishing that sentence.” You interrupted his words knowing exactly what would come next. “You promised me that we would do this, so you can’t just back out now. You know how important this is to me, and how important it should be for you.” You scolded him.
Baji always enjoyed when you would challenge him. You two were the perfect definition of balance. He was mostly spontaneous and adventurous with a mindset of “do first and reap the consequences afterwards”. You, on the other, had a brain large enough to think before you went about doing a lot of different things. That didn’t mean that Baji wasn’t someone who could think things through, or that you weren’t adventurous. You two perfectly balanced each other out.
You didn’t fail to catch the light smile that grazed his lips as he let out a dramatic sigh.
“But she can be so scary sometimes.” He was borderline whining, which was something that you weren’t able to see often. In truth, he believed that it was a weakness. This side of him was something few were able to see, but you consider yourself one of the fortunate few who were able to know Keisuke for who he was in every light.
“Oh? Does that mean you have finally met your match?” You chuckled as you mocked your boyfriend. “Listen, I’m sure that this isn’t going to be so terrible, so please just let’s get through this, and then we can go out and do whatever you want.” He nodded his head and pointed his gaze to the door where he was met with his mother’s pointed eyes. You stood up to greet her politely.
“Well it truly is wonderful to finally meet the one who has been making my son so happy these days. It is nice to meet you Y/n.” You smiled and greeted her back, excited and nervous for how this was going to go. It wasn’t often that you got to meet your partner’s family for the first time.
Dinner was filled with delicious food and entertaining conversation, at the expense of Keisuke’s pride of course. You couldn't help but feel more for the person who sat next to you with each passing moment illustrating what his mother would refer to as his “greatest hits”. His shy laughs and pleas ringing in your ears throughout the night.
~~~~
“So, we can do whatever I want now?” It only took him two minutes following dinner with his mother to recover. You could tell he was still a bit shy over the new information that had been unleashed, but he had enough trust in you that he was able to look past the exchange of information that he was victim to. In truth, while he was embarrassed, he couldn’t help but be glad that you hit it off with one of the most important people in his life. Not to mention, the words of approval that were shared by his mother when you excused yourself to the bathroom made his ears turn red. You truly were something special to him.
“Yes Baji, but please, can we save the arson for another night? I just got on your Mom’s good side, and I really don’t want to ruin that by having her bail us out of jail.” He chuckled at your concern as you facepalmed and shook your head.
“Don’t worry, we’re not going to be setting fire to anything tonight, but it’s not like we would get caught anyway.” You smacked him on the neck as you annoyingly groaned out his name. He feigned hurt and turned away with an adorable pout.
“C’mon, let’s stop pouting and do whatever you want. Okay?” He turned his head back towards you with one of the cutest smiles you have ever seen. “You’re too cute, you big baby.” You laughed and pushed his cheeks together playfully before turning to walk away.
“Hey Y/N! Wait up! You don’t even know where we’re going! God I love you.” He said that last part to himself as he chased after you laughing wholeheartedly.
It’s amazing. Truly miraculous. You were but a teenager, and yet you spend most of your time in front of his grave. That’s no way to spend your time. That’s what he would be telling you. Maybe. Did you really even know him? Of course you did. You love him. He would tell you to go and get some food, and then maybe do something fun. He always suggested that you two go on an adventure when you were overly stressed, or if you were ever feeling sad.
Is that what he would tell you to do right now? You can’t really hear him saying that to you. Maybe he would say it, but this has been a common occurrence. You can't hear him anymore. That’s all you want. To hear him tell you anything. Anything at all. Just one more time would be enough. At least, that’s what you tell yourself. Why? Why couldn’t you hear anything anymore? What did you do to be so cursed that you can’t even imagine it or remember what he sounded like?
“How long have you been here?” The voice came from behind you. Had you not felt so numb, then maybe, just maybe, you would have reacted. You couldn’t face him right now. You haven’t been able to face him since it all happened. You knew he was hurting just as much as you were.
“Not long.” Damn. Your voice betrayed you. It came out all broken and frail, just like a reflection of how you truly felt.
“It’s not healthy. He wouldn’t want you to be here like this.” You felt him sit next to you.
“Tell me Chifuyu. Can you hear him?” You didn’t dare turn to look at him.
“What do you mean?”  His head leaned to the side, trying to decode what you meant.
“Can you hear him tell you that this isn't what he would want? Can you hear his voice in your head? Because, I can’t. I feel like I’ve gone deaf to his voice suddenly. How does that happen? How come I can no longer hear him?” Chifuyu didn’t respond. He knew better. “Do you know what his voice was like?”
He stayed silent trying to think. What did his best friend sound like? He has such clear memories, and he remembers what he said and how he spoke, but he couldn’t hear it. So there you two sat. Complete silence, both trying to listen to something they would never hear again.
“Baji, listen to me. It’s not that hard. You just need to focus. You don’t want to end up disappointing your mom again, do you?” Chifuyu’s tone warned Baji of the upcoming consequences of his procrastination and inability to focus for longer than five minutes.
“This is just too hard. But don’t give up on me Chifuyu, or I’ll kick your ass.” Baji grabbed the pencil  again and started scribbling down equations.
“Tell me Y/N, why aren’t you tutoring him? I think he might do better with you guiding him through this, because he clearly doesn’t want to listen to me.” You were sitting on Baji’s bed doing some of your own homework when Chifuyu pointed his attention towards you.
“Him?” you questioned, pointing your finger towards Baji? “I gave up tutoring him a long time. It would be,”
“Healthier for our relationship. That’s what she likes to say to make her feel better about abandoning me.” Baji tied up his hair as he spoke. He knew you too well.
“Listen, Chifuyu, you’re like his best friend. If there is anyone here who can help him it’s you. Plus I am more of a distraction when I tutor him anyway.”
“That’s very true. You’re not as cute, Chifuyu.” The man in question looked back between the couple with complete amazement. You two really knew each other on a whole other level. “Anyway, I think we need a snack break. What do you want?”
The blonde boy answered briefly, more annoyed that there was another distraction, but he thought that snacks may serve as fuel he needed to get through the next couple of hours.
“Oh, I’ll have-” you began.
“Yeah, yeah. I know. Save your breath. I’ll be back in a few.” Baji waved you off, respectfully of course, as he traveled to the kitchen.
~~~~
“Hey, Keisuke.”
“Huh?”
“How do you do that?” Chifuyu was speaking his thoughts.
“What exactly?”
“How do you know what Y/N is thinking? It just seems like you know what they want or what they’re going to say all the time.” Chifuyu was genuinely curious. He has witnessed this on too many occasions for it to be a fluke.
“I don’t know. I just do. We just live on the same wavelength I guess. Or maybe they’re just unoriginal.” Baji finished his thought with a laugh knowing that if you heard that you would probably playfully punch his arm.
“I am so original. You’re just a wizard or something,” is what he assumes you would say in this situation. He really did know you too well.
Chifuyu just kept his eyes on his friend who was lost in his thoughts. He could only wish to find something similar to what the two of you shared.
“Hey, quit daydreaming and get back to your homework. You’re gonna fail at this rate.”
“I knew I would find you here again. C’mon Y/N. Why don’t we go and get something to eat?” It really hurt Chifuyu to see you in such despair again.
“I’m not hungry.” You were feeling especially bitter.
“Well, at least let me keep you company for a little while.” You nodded slowly.
“Talking feels like such a chore lately. I blame you, you know. You made it so easy before.” Chifuyu looked up at the sky as he heard your voice. He knew who you were talking to. “I just don’t understand why you would have me save my breath all those times, if you were just going to up and leave like this. Do you know how long I spoke in half sentences? Finishing a thought just feels empty and unfulfilling. I hate having to explain my thoughts to people. And here I am, monologuing because I can’t tell if you know what I’m going to say next anymore. Hell, I don’t even know what I want to say next anymore.” You sighed and leaned your head back. “Jeez, I must be going crazy.”
As Chifuyu listened to you, he couldn’t help but feel the immense sorrow that you have been feeling. You didn’t just lose your boyfriend, or your first love. You truly lost your other half. Baji wasn’t just some guy you spent your spare time with, or a little fling. You shared something with him that he couldn’t possibly begin to understand. He wished for something like that, but he almost felt guilty for asking for it. Seeing you fall apart, he couldn’t help but think that a love like that is more of a curse than a gift.
He quickly shook that thought from his mind. He is still in mourning. That’s it. And so are you. That’s why this situation, you and him sitting in front of the memory of a loved one, is so difficult. Others may have been able to continue on, but for the two of you, Baji was too important in your lives to just abandon. That’s what you were both feeling at that moment. Chifuyu could move on and rely on his friends, and know that he had something to do for Baji’s death to mean anything, but you? Well, he didn’t know how to help you. No one really did.
“What in God’s name do you think you’re doing?” The exasperation in your voice only spurred him on more.
“Taking you on a date of course. What else would I be doing here, silly?” What, does he take you for a fool? Obviously, you were aware that the two of you had plans, but you were not aware that they included going on a ride.
“I thought I made it perfectly clear last time. No. More. Rides. At least with me anyway.” Honestly, what goes on in that boy’s head.
“Yeah, but that was last time. I won't do it again.”
“We almost died.”
“That’s a bit of an exaggeration and you know it. C’mon. I’ll drive super safe. Speed limit and all.” His hands went up on the defense as you sauntered over to him.
“Baji Keisuke.” Oof. The full name. “You better behave.” His bright smile appeared, but you couldn’t help but catch the glint of mischief that disappeared almost as quickly as it came. If you didn’t know him better, you probably would have assumed he was going to actually behave.
Hope. That was the only driving force that brought you the back of his bike. You were wrong to have that hope. You knew better. But here you are now, grabbing onto his body for dear life as he speeds down roads.
“Slow down. Please. You promised you would behave.” And he listened. The bike began to slow down.
“Well, I never promised.” Those were his final words as he then picked up speed, going faster than before. You squealed and reinforced your arms around his body. His laughter was loud enough to carry to your ears. Unfortunately, there was nothing you could do at this point.
When you finally arrived at your destination, you practically slipped off of the bike and onto the pavement of the parking lot.
“Oh, sweet Jesus. Safety.” You laid on the ground for a good moment. Just hoping that the world would stop shaking beneath you.
“Oh come on you big baby. I wasn’t even going that fast.” The glare sent his way shut him up real quick. “Ok, come on now. Stand up.” He grabbed your arm and helped you to your feet before pulling you into his arms. “We’re here now, so quit you’re crying.” Strangely enough, those words, and his protective embrace were enough to bring you back to reality.
“What exactly are we doing here?” You looked past his body and at the scene behind him.
“Well, I figured we could watch the sunset. I was going to try for the sunrise, but well, I figured this was probably safer. You’re kind of scary in the mornings. But don’t worry about it, because I like sunsets more anyway.” The hill had a great visual of the city beyond. He had taken you just far enough out of the city so that you could embrace some quiet time with your boyfriend, while watching the beautiful sunset.
“You know, for a gang member, you’re quite the romantic.” You couldn’t help but chuckle at his light blush that formed at your compliment.
His arm wrapped around your shoulder where he guided you to a spot for the two of you to sit and watch the day come to an end. You two were usually talkative and active during your time together, but there was something about this place and time that brought you both to just basque in the last of the warm glow the sun had to offer.
A sunset can mean many things. Most people consider it to be the end of something. Others may call it the beginning of something else. A sunrise could mean the  start of the new day. So why not think of a sunset as the beginning of night? You couldn’t help those thoughts pass through your mind as you took a breath of fresh air. It was truly refreshing to be outside with the love of your life. His cologne lingered in the air, and you couldn’t help but think that this is what it means to have your home be where your heart is. He felt like home.
Perfection. That is what the both of you would use to describe one another. It’s also what you would both say when describing this moment. Just the two of you sitting before the sun as it descends. Night taking you over. No one and nothing could ruin this moment shared by only the two of you. Absolute bliss.
“You’re an idiot. You know that? Getting into fights all the time. Driving too fast for no reason. Getting killed. You’re such an idiot.” Your voice couldn’t withstand the weight of those words, causing it to break towards the end.
“Well he was dumb for sure, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say he’s an idiot.”
“Maybe you’re right.”
“You know I am. But don’t worry. I think he understands that you’re just mad at him for now.” Mikey wasn’t known to be sentimental, but when Chifuyu confronted him about your behavior, he couldn’t help but sympathize with you.
“You know, I think about the last real date we had, and it’s so different now. The sun had a glow on him that I couldn’t see then. Even when he was laughing like a maniac during that bike ride from hell, he just has some kind of glow now. Why couldn’t I see it then?”
It was that moment that Mikey really felt what those words meant. He had heard people refer to others as the “light of their lives” but this was so much more than that. Memories hold a certain power over people. He experienced it with his brother’s death. That glow was something that only existed with memories of something lost. In your case, it meant so much more. Baji wasn’t just someone you lost. He was the one that you couldn’t lose, and yet the universe had other plans.
“That fondness and love that you’re feeling is normal. So is the anger and sadness. It sucks only having those memories to hold onto. Cherish them. I’m still learning how to do that myself, but even I know how important those memories are. I think it’s time that you think about spending your time elsewhere Y/N. I know that you’re scared to lose what you have left, but those memories will stay with you even if you move on.”
“I know that. I just don’t want to leave him here all by himself. He always had company. If it wasn’t a person, it was a cat, and yet if I go, he’ll be all alone. I don’t think he’ll like that.” You said those words, mostly to yourself, but out loud for the first time. You must be going crazy. “He’s dead. He can’t be lonely anymore, can’t he?” It was rhetorical. Mikey wasn’t the smartest, but he knew that much.
Mikey was mad at his friend. He left him like everyone else did. But he also left you. How could he just leave such a caring person behind? Even in his death, you were still thinking about his best interest at your own expense. He wanted to believe that Baji didn’t deserve someone as incredible as you, but he knew that would be a lie.
“Y/N, promise me that you’ll try to move on. It doesn’t have to be now, but Baji deserves to see you work towards happiness again in your life. You deserve it too.” Mikey knew that he wasn’t the smartest, but he hoped that those words meant something to you. He knew what it was like to lose people. Hell, Baji was his friend too. He was in pain too, but he was making the effort. He just hoped that you would see it and work towards a goal of moving forward with your life. It didn’t mean you had to move on and forget.
“How are your memories of your brother now?”
“They’re still special and present. They never go away.” You nodded your head at his response. You didn’t have any more energy to talk to him.
~~~
“Y/N, did you know?”
“What are you on about now?” You smiled at him with adoration. The last of the sunlight casting an ethereal glow onto his features. His smile was unlike anything you have ever experienced. It was gentle but full of a love that transcends time and space.
“Well, I just wanted to know if you knew?”
“Knew what?”
“That I love you.”
Tears streamed down your face.
The first thing to go was the sound of his voice.
A/N: Thank you all for reading. Please make sure to like and let me know what you think!
Lucy Dacus at the Moore Theatre!!
On November 9th, I was lucky enough to complete a true rite of passage and finish my trio of boygenius solo concerts with a breathtaking performance by the love of my life, Lucy Dacus and her perfect opener, Haley Heynderickx. Here are my thoughts!
Tumblr media
At the start of the show, Haley Heynderickx came out on stage wearing her pajamas, with nothing but a single guitar and absolutely blew the audience away by singing a variety of songs from an acapella rendition of a short song about tour to several more fleshed out songs from her charming and beautiful EP “I Need to Start a Garden.” I had seen Heynderickx once before, when she opened for Punch Brothers in Washington D.C., and at both shows her live vocals were indistinguishable from the studio recordings of each and every song.  Adorable, funny, and an insanely impressive live performer, Haley Heynderickx was easily one of the most memorable and enjoyable opening acts I’ve ever seen.
And then, LUCY!!! The setlist was amazing, a combination of all the fan favorites and classics from a variety of albums, and a full collection of songs from her newest album, Home Video. The visuals and lighting effects were both simplistic and stunning, perfectly complimenting Lucy’s musical style from her smooth vocals and emotionally charged lyrics. Some of my favorites were the backgrounds for “Thumbs” and “Cartwheel,” subtle drawings that really reflected the visualization of each song for me. Between songs, Lucy’s jokes and comments added so much atmosphere to the show, from spinning her microphone around by the wire and asking the question she asks at every show: “Who here is gay?” Which produced maybe the largest cheer of the night. Live Love Lucy Dacus.
Overall, both Haley and Lucy put on fantastic live performances in a stunning venue, and this show was something I’ll remember fondly for a very long time. Check out the playlist I linked for some features from the setlist and other great Lucy and Haley songs, and remember to…
STAY COOL!!!!
The Art of Story Telling: An Insight to Kendrick Lamar
By Nahla White
When I think of some of the greatest concept albums to come out of the 21st century, it’s impossible to neglect mentioning the works of the great Kendrick Lamar. Across all five of his studio releases, Kendrick has been able to craft a reputation for himself of being a masterful storyteller and an even more masterful musician, and nothing displays this more than his 2015 magnum opus: To Pimp a Butterfly (TPAD).
Following three years after the release and massive success of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, TPAD serves as another book in Kendricks life, with each chapter (song) recounting his personal experiences, inner thoughts, and opinions about the world he lives in. And while Kendrick's album does contain much insight and commentary about issues relating to capitalism, the exploitation of Black music and culture, and the mistreatment of Black people in America, his personal testimony is often overshadowed by the previously listed qualities and is sometimes outright ignored by people who tend to want to search for deeper meaning within the album. Today, I want to look into why this happens and shed more light on the deeper, more personal aspects of the album that are often obscured in interpretations of the work. Rather than going through the entire album, I’ll be focusing on four of my favorite songs and their place in the overall story.
“I’ll Wesley Snipe Your Ass Before Thirty Five.”
youtube
Starting with what I believe to be the best song on the album, “Wesley’s Theory” provides a rather deep and introspective outlook on the effects of becoming a mainstream rapper. Within the story of the album, Kendrick recounts the aftermath of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City's success, with the first verse of the track expressing the excitement he felt upon making it big in the industry. Through lines such as “When I get signed, homie, I’ma act a fool,” and “Uneducated, but I got a million-dollar check like that,” we hear the narrator of the song flaunt his success by indulging in things that he once saw as unobtainable.
The following hook that goes “We should never gave you niggas money” describes the sentiment most White people (and even many Black folks) have towards this generation of "new money". Similar to the topic of reparations, many people retain ideas of African Americans being undeserving of such wealth because they believe we’d spend it on unimportant things. There is this overarching theme of reflection throughout the album, with Kendrick reflecting on the poorer decisions of his past, and he admits that his eagerness to spend money is one of them.
Another impressive storytelling device that I feel Kendrick doesn’t get credited with enough is his ability to rap from different perspectives, especially through the use of voice modulators and vocal impressions. The last section of the song is told through the perspective of Uncle Sam; an allegory for America’s capitalism. A particular section in the verse, I think, perfectly summarizes the entire point Kendrick was trying to convey with this opening track:
“Christmas, tell ‘em what's on your wishlist
Get it all, you deserve it Kendrick
And when you hit the White House, do you
But remember, you aint pass economics in school.
And everything you buy, taxes will deny.
I’ll Wesley Snipe your ass before thirty-five.”
Uncle Sam sort of acts like the devil on Kendrick's shoulder, coaxing him to indulge in his desires despite the financial repercussions that come with it. While the commentary on capitalism in this song is worth talking about, I think it's just as crucial to focus on the ways it personally impacted Kendrick’s life.
Which leads me to my next song…
“King Kunta, Black Man Taking No Losses.”
youtube
King Kunta is the third track on the album, and it is here where Kendrick reveals his intentions behind the title of the album.
Kunta Kinte was a character featured and popularized in Alex Haley’s novel Roots. With the accounts of Kinte’s life supposedly being passed down through Haley’s family via oral tradition, one of the most memorable events in his life is his refusal to accept the slave name that was forced onto him. Due to his defiance, Kinte’s foot was cut off, hence Kendrick’s reference of: “Now I run the game, got the whole world talkin’. King Kunta, everybody wanna cut the legs off him.”
The juxtaposition between the word king and the name Kunta is supposed to portray the way in which Kendrick feels like a slave to the system. Despite having the fame, money, and likability that he had always desired, he ultimately recognizes that he’s fallen  victim to the game all the same. He feels like he’s being pimped out by the rap industry as a whole, hence the name To Pimp a Butterfly.
However, despite this knowledge of his exploitation, this doesn’t stop Kendrick from continuing to indulge in his lifestyle, and that also doesn’t stop him from using his own power and influence to exploit others.
“Killed my Homeboy and God Spared Your Life.”
youtube
“These Walls” is the fifth track on TPAB and acts as the bridge that connects this album to Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.
Upfront, These Walls is a funk inspired, upbeat track where Kendrick utilizes numerous metaphors and allegories to talk about sex. Even the use of the words “these walls” is supposed to represent the walls of the female genitalia, but peeling back the surface reveals so much more that the song has to offer.
This is where we, as the audience, start to see aspects of Kendrick’s depression and survivor’s guilt begin to manifest. Along with being an allegory for sex, the “walls” Kendrick raps about also represent the mental barriers that he finds himself trapped in as a result of his fame and the expectations he has to live up to. Feeling isolated from his community and within his own mind, he turns to sex as a means of distracting himself from his depression; a coping that doesn’t seem to be working very well.
The song takes a rather interesting and dark turn during the last verse. For context: The ending to Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’s “Swimming Pools” is about one of Kendrick’s childhood friends being gunned down seemingly out of nowhere. This happens when Kendrick is 15 years old. Fast forward to the events of “These Walls”, and while Kendrick is back visiting his home city of Compton, he ends up sleeping with the girlfriend of the man who killed his friend as retaliation.
“Killed my homeboy and God spared your life
Dumb criminal got indicted same night
So when you play this song, rewind the first verse
About me abusing my power so you can hurt
About me and her in the shower whenever she horny
About me and her in the after hours of the morning”
While feeling like he’s been cheated by the system, Kendrick uses his own power and influence to manipulate and exploit others, ultimately allowing the cycle of exploitation to continue.
“A Friend Never Leave Compton for Profit.”
youtube
What I consider to be the first of two climaxes and the emotional peak of the album, “U” (the sixth track on the album) acts as a hate letter from Kendrick to himself. During his downward spiral, Kendrick finds himself in a hotel room drinking away his sorrows while contemplating on the least admirable qualities about himself. His feelings of survivor's remorse and self hatred start to manifest in the repetition of the lines “Loving you is complicated.”
In this, he raps about all that happened during his tour of Good Kid M.A.A.D City, reminiscing on the numerous friends that he had lost due to violence in Compton. He expresses guilt for seemingly leaving his friends and family behind to die while he was living a life most people could only dream of.
"You ain’t no brother, you ain’t no disciple, you ain’t no friend.
A friend never leave Compton for profit,
or leave his best friend, little brother
You promised you’d watch him before they shot him."
I feel like this is the song most people seem to overlook in terms of their interpretations of the album. Black art is constantly politicized regardless of the artist's true intention for the piece, and while there is much political commentary to be found throughout the album, “U” holds the key to understanding that this truly is a story about Kendrick’s personal journey.
“I Remember You Was Conflicted…”
 It's difficult for many folks to conceptualize that Black people are allowed to live lives that don’t revolve around our struggle, even though our struggle plays a huge role in how we live our lives. Despite TPAB walking this fence almost perfectly, the credit is almost never given where it’s due.
 I personally believe that this, in part, has to do with society's obsession of finding “value” in Black art and music. With Rap making its way into the mainstream and becoming the new Pop music, most people detest the mainstream Trap sound that the genre is often reduced to. It further affirms the numerous negative stereotypes people have about Rap and thus rids the genre of any nuance or diversity. As a result, critics typically gravitate towards music that they deem as “introspective” or “valuable”, completely disregarding stuff that would be considered “stereotypical” Hip-Hop.
While looking into why this is, I also stumbled across another theory as to why people can’t seem to divide the personal from the political. John Lawrie’s article “I Remember You Was Conflicted”: Reinterpreting Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly points towards the works of Henry Louis Gates Jr., and his theory of how much Black art during the duration of 20th century (and even now) was created as a form of retaliation:
“This broad methodological practice, however, forces one to examine all African American music as fundamentally political, regardless of its intent.” (Lawrie, 2016)
At its roots, Hip-Hop was originally created as an alternative subculture, serving as a means of finding joy, community, and happiness despite the many socioeconomic disparities most Black people were subjected to. In a time and era where simply being Black was frowned upon, any sort of triumph was seen as an act of defiance towards the norm of White culture and supremacy, which is why Hip-Hop was immediately rejected by the masses at the time of its emergence.
Despite Hip-Hop being mainstream, many people still hold onto this concept. It's the same reason why non-Black people compare me to the Black Panther’s whenever I wear my afro on the street; the Blackness and the Black experience has historically been politicized, and TPAB has been subjected to the same treatment.
Why isn't Johnny Rivers in the rock and roll Hall of fameChatGPT
It was a most surreal scene.
Outdoor concert venue in the ‘80s. Warm summer night. Not quite dark yet. Crowd still filing in to see a show consisting of several outstanding acts (please don’t ask me to remember who else was on the bill). Lone figure walks across the stage, plugs in his guitar and starts playing blues numbers. No introduction. No backup. No problem.
Thirty minutes later, the guitar is unplugged and the solitary man leaves the stage.
Solitary man? - Neil Diamond?
Nope.
Secret Agent Man?
Yup.
And if he hadn’t included a hit or two in his set, he may have remained a secret to many in attendance. To this date, he has remained a secret to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a snub hopefully to be rectified in the very near future. For Johnny Rivers is truly one of the greatest to rock us since Bill Haley set this whole thing in motion.
Bruce Eder, on allmusicguide.com, described him best, writing, “Rivers was very much a kindred spirit to figures like Buddy Holly and Ronnie Hawkins, with all of the verve and spirit of members of that first wave of rock & rollers.
The magnitude of Rivers' accomplishment shouldn't be underestimated - since early 1964, the American charts had been dominated almost exclusively by British rock acts, with American artists picking up the scraps that were leftover, and then along came this new white kid from Baton Rouge, playing '50s-style rock & roll and R&B like he means it (and he did).”
Everything about Rivers said Rock & Roll. Born Johnny Ramistella, he became Johnny Rivers after none other than Alan Freed suggested a name change, Rivers’ home on the Mississippi River his inspiration. Once he became Rivers, the hits started flowing (sorry).
The beginning was rather auspicious, though, as Rivers and drummer Eddie Rubin filled a sudden vacancy at a Los Angeles nightclub, later to be joined by famed bassist Joe Osborn. The trio proved so popular they became a mainstay until given a one-year deal to open the new Whisky A Go Go. The rest, as they say, is history, the Whisky soon becoming the place to go…go (sorry).
With his ripping guitar, occasional harp and pleasing Southern drawl, and the exceptional backing of Rubin and Osborn, Rivers breathed new life into a series of Rock classics that eventually found their way onto his first two LPs, “Johnny Rivers At The Whisky A Go Go” and “Here We A Go Go Again!” It was just basic, stripped-down, three-piece Rock. And it was great. Actually, it still is.
Both albums became hits, propelled by hot versions of Chuck Berry’s “Memphis” and “Maybelline,” which shot to No. 2 and No. 12, respectively. Ironically, it was not the British, but two American groups that held “Memphis” in the runner-up position in the Summer of ’64, the first being The Beach Boys with “I Get Around,” then The Four Seasons with “Rag Doll.”
For the third LP, Rivers went into the studio and came out with “Johnny Rivers In Action!,” which yielded his second top 10 hit, a cover of Harold Dorman’s “Mountain Of Love.” Meanwhile, his version of the traditional blues chestnut “Midnight Special,” pulled from the second album, became a smash, later becoming the theme of the popular television concert show.
In the summer of 1965, Rivers returned to live recording with “Meanwhile Back At The Whisky a Go Go,” which gave him another Top 10 single, a sizzling remake of Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son.”
Having had hits with two straight renditions of blues classics, Rivers began to branch out. His next album jumped onto the folk-rock craze started a couple months earlier by Bob Dylan and The Byrds, and his version of Pete Seeger‘s “Where Have All The Flowers Gone” gave him his seventh straight hit single. A remake of Buck Owens’ “Under Your Spell Again” made it eight as Rivers expanded into Country Rock.
But 1966 brought him back to live recording and returned him to the Top 10 as “Secret Agent Man,” used as the theme for the TV show “Secret Agent,” soared to No. 3. Another live single, “(I Washed My Hands In) Muddy Water,” a remake of Stonewall Jackson’s No. 8 Country hit, climbed into the Top 20 and punctuated his “Johnny Rivers’ Golden Hits” long-player.
While a Greatest Hits set often denotes the end of a hit-making career - sort of a career summary in many cases - for Rivers it signaled only a direction switch. He went into the studio with a string section, vocal backing from Darlene Love’s Blossoms and a tune he had penned along with Lou Adler. The result was his only No. 1 single, the classic “Poor Side Of Town.” It was included on the aptly named album “Changes,” which also featured a hidden gem penned by a then-unknown songwriter, Jimmy Webb. The song, “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” remained an album cut while “Poor Side Of Town” ruled the airwaves. Glen Campbell heard it, copied it almost note-for-note, and finally got his solo career into the superstar stratosphere when his recording became a hit, eventually winning two Grammys and reaching classic status.
But Webb had already prospered thanks to Rivers’ knack for recognizing a great song. Rivers started his own record label - Soul City - signed a new group - The 5th Dimension - and provided them with five Webb originals for their initial offering, which he produced along with Marc Gordon. Several months prior to Campbell’s breakthrough, The “Up, Up & Away” LP and the single of the same name leaped into the top 10, the single winning a slew of Grammys, including “Record of the Year” and “Song Of The Year.”
Firmly established as a successful record company owner and producer, Rivers could have rested on his laurels. But in 1967, he played a major role in organizing the Monterey Pop Festival, in which he also was one of the featured performers, and issued what I believe to be his best album and one of the best of the ‘60s, “Rewind.” Including eight originals from arranger Webb and backing from “The Wrecking Crew’s” Hal Blaine, Osborn and Larry Knechtel, the LP produced two hit singles, Motown covers “Baby I Need Your Lovin’” and “Tracks Of My Tears,” each reaching the top 10, and a terrific reworking of Paul Simon’s “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her.”
“Rewind” reached No. 14, his best showing on the album charts since his debut, but the follow-up, 1968‘s “Realization,” did even better, climbing to No. 5. Though I don’t feel it lived up to “Rewind,” it did have its moments, especially the big hit “Summer Rain.”
Rivers’ pace slowed during the ’70s, but he remained a force, charting five more albums and several hit singles that included the 1972 remake of Huey Smith & The Clowns’ “Rockin’ Pneumonia & the Boogie Woogie Flu,” which soared to No. 6, a terrific version of the Beach Boys’ “Help Me Rhonda,” which reached No. 22 with Brian Wilson himself contributing backing vocals, and 1977’s “Swayin’ To The Music (Slow Dancin’),” which became his last Top 10 single.
Still releasing recordings and making appearances, Rivers remains viable, but largely underrated. As Eder wrote, “Johnny Rivers is a unique figure in the history of rock music. On the most obvious level, he was a rock star of the 1960s and a true rarity as a white American singer/guitarist who made a name for himself as a straight-ahead rock & roller during the middle of that decade. Just as important behind the scenes, his recordings and their success led to the launching, directly and indirectly, of at least three record labels and a dozen other careers whose influence extended into the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond.”
As an AI language model, I don't have access to the most current information or the specific criteria and decisions of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame beyond my knowledge cutoff in September 2021. At that time, Johnny Rivers had not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is known for its subjective selection process and has faced criticism and controversy over the years for its choices and omissions. The induction criteria typically include the artist's influence and significance in shaping the development and impact of rock and roll music. However, the Hall of Fame's decision-making process is not transparent, and there may be various reasons why an artist like Johnny Rivers has not been inducted.
Factors that can influence induction decisions include an artist's commercial success, critical acclaim, innovation, longevity, cultural impact, and the opinions of the Hall of Fame's voting body, which consists of music industry professionals, historians, and artists. It's important to note that there are many deserving artists who have not yet been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and it can be a subjective and complex process.
For the most up-to-date and accurate information on Johnny Rivers' status in relation to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I would recommend checking the official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website or other reliable sources.
he's been nominated fifteen timesChatGPT
I apologize for the outdated information. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Johnny Rivers had not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, if Johnny Rivers has been nominated 15 times since then, it suggests that he has been recognized by the nominating committee as a potential candidate for induction.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's nomination process involves a committee that considers numerous artists each year and narrows down the selection to a final ballot. From that ballot, the inductees are chosen through a voting process involving a diverse group of industry professionals, historians, and previous inductees.
While being nominated multiple times can be seen as a positive sign, it's important to note that nomination does not guarantee induction. The final decision ultimately rests with the voting body of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The specific reasons why Johnny Rivers has not been inducted despite multiple nominations are known only to the committee and voters involved in the process.
It's worth mentioning that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's induction process is subjective, and many factors are considered when making the final selections. It's possible that Rivers has faced tough competition from other artists in his nominated years, which may have impacted his induction chances.
speculate on his exclusionChatGPT
While I can speculate on potential reasons for Johnny Rivers' exclusion from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's important to note that my analysis is based on general observations and not specific insider knowledge. The Hall of Fame's selection process is complex and can involve various factors. Here are a few possible reasons for his exclusion:
Genre bias: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame encompasses a wide range of genres and subgenres within the rock genre. It's possible that the nominating committee and voting body have favored other artists or subgenres over Johnny Rivers' style of rock music. Different tastes and preferences among the voters can influence the selection process.
Commercial success versus critical acclaim: While Johnny Rivers enjoyed significant commercial success throughout his career, including several chart-topping hits, the Hall of Fame also considers critical acclaim and artistic influence. If his impact on the evolution or cultural significance of rock music is perceived as relatively less influential compared to other nominees or inductees, it could have affected his chances of induction.
Timing and competition: The nomination process for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is highly competitive, and each year, a limited number of artists are inducted. The strength of the other nominated artists in a given year and the overall diversity of the ballot can impact an individual artist's chances. If Johnny Rivers faced particularly strong competition in the years he was nominated, it could have affected his induction prospects.
Lack of sustained career impact: While Johnny Rivers had several successful years with hits like "Memphis" and "Secret Agent Man," some artists who receive induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have had longer-lasting and more influential careers. If Rivers' impact was perceived as more concentrated in a specific era or his influence waned over time, it might have affected his chances of induction.
It's important to remember that these are speculative reasons, and the actual decision-making process of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is known only to the individuals involved. Without more specific information about the selection process, it is challenging to pinpoint the exact reasons for Johnny Rivers' exclusion.
