NGÀY 1 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm : HÀ NỘI/SÀI GÒN – DELHI

Đoàn tập trung tại sân bay quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất/Nội Bài làm thủ tục chuyến bay đi Delhi.

Ăn tối trên máy bay. Đến Delhi, đoàn làm thủ tục nhập cảnh. Đưa đoàn về khách sạn, làm thủ tục nhận phòng, nghỉ đêm tại khách sạn 4-5 sao ở Delhi.

NGÀY 2 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm : DELHI – LEH (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Đoàn ăn sáng tại khách sạn, sau đó di chuyển ra sân bay, đáp chuyến bay đi Leh. Xe đón đoàn từ sân bay về khách sạn, làm thủ tục check in, nghỉ ngơi, làm quen với điều kiện địa hình, thời tiết.

Trong ngày đầu tiên làm quen với thời tiết ở Leh, đoàn không tắm và không uống bia rượu, không vận động mạnh, không đi quá nhanh hoặc cố gắng quá sức. Ăn trưa tại khách sạn.

Hoàng hôn đầu tiên ở Leh, nếu có thể, đoàn có thể đi dạo phố, vào chợ địa phương, hoặc chọn nghỉ ngơi tại khách sạn.

NGÀY 3 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm : KHÁM PHÁ LEH (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Thức dậy vào một buổi sáng đẹp trời và vô cùng trong lành trên núi, thưởng thức bữa sáng theo phong cách ẩm thực địa phương tại khách sạn.

Ghé thăm Spituk Gompa, tu viện Phật giáo nổi tiếng tọa lạc trên một đỉnh đồi. Ẩn mình giữa những ngọn núi hùng vĩ và dưới bầu trời bao la, tu viện này là giấc mơ của mọi Phật tử, cảm giác bình yên nơi này truyền cảm hứng cho bạn tiếp cận cuộc sống theo nhiều cách khác nhau.

Tu viện cũng có một số biểu tượng độc đáo của Đức Phật Gautama và 5 bức tranh Thangka nổi tiếng, những bức tranh Phật giáo và nhiều chiếc mặt nạ cổ, vũ khí khác nhau.

Tham quan Hall of Fame, nơi tưởng nhớ những người tử vì đạo trong chiến tranh Indo-Pak. Đoàn nghỉ ngơi, ăn trưa.

Buổi chiều, ngắm toàn cảnh thành phố Leh nằm gọn giữa những rặng núi kỳ vĩ trên đỉnh Leh Palace. Chiêm ngưỡng cung điện Leh (Leh Palace) được xây dựng từ thế kỷ 17, một thời kỳ vàng son đã qua của Leh. Sau đó đoàn thăm quan Bảo tháp Shanti (Shanti Stupa) còn được gọi là tháp Hòa Bình nằm ở độ cao 3.609 mét, được xây dựng tuyệt đẹp để kỉ niệm 2500 năm Phật giáo.

Trong bảo tháp, Đức Đạt Lai Lạt Ma thứ 14 cất giữ xá lợi của Đức Phật ở phần nền và trên đỉnh tháp. Đặc biệt, trên đỉnh tháp được đặt một bức tượng Phật bằng thủy tinh và vàng. Cùng ngắm hoàng hôn trên đỉnh đồi Chanspa và nhìn bao quát thị trấn Leh lên đèn. Buổi tối, dạo chợ đêm ở thị trấn để mua sắm các món đồ thủ công Tây Tạng, hoặc café quanh khu chợ Leh thưởng thức các món ăn đặc trưng của người bản địa. Sau một ngày tham quan thú vị, đoàn trở về khách sạn ở Leh ăn tối và nghỉ ngơi.

NGÀY 4 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm: LAMAYURU - MOONLAND (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Sau bữa sáng, đoàn sẵn sàng lên đường với chuyến đi đến tu viện Lamayuru, một trong những tu viện đẹp như tranh vẽ ở Ladakh.

Nằm trên một ngọn núi phía trên thung lũng trên con đường chính đi xuống từ đèo Fotu La đến Khalse, Lamayuru là một ví dụ hoàn hảo cho thiết kế gompas Mật tông Tây Tạng và cũng là một trong những tu viện lâu đời nhất ở Ladakh, cách Leh 115km. Nơi đây còn được chọn là nơi tổ chức lễ hội Múa mặt nạ của các vị Lạt Ma.

Xe vượt qua những ngọn đèo ngoạn mục, độ cao tại Lamayuru xấp xỉ 3.500m so với mặt nước biển. Đoàn sẽ đi qua thung lũng Sham, nằm nép mình tuyệt đẹp quanh đường cao tốc Srinagar – Leh. Bạn đã từng nghe hiện tượng xe không chạy, vẫn được đoạn đường kéo lên đồi? Đó là đồi Magnetic, đây là một đoạn đường nhỏ bất chấp định luật trọng lực.

Tiếp tục tham quan Alchi Gompa được thành lập vào thế kỷ 11 bởi Rinchen Zangpo, dịch giả nổi tiếng đến từ Tây Tạng, nơi đây được coi là một trong những tu viện lâu đời nhất ở Ladakh. Người ta nói rằng Rinchen đã mang theo cây liễu bên mình và trồng chúng ở những nơi khác nhau ở Ladakh và Zanskar.

Những cây gậy này đã chuyển sang màu xanh lục và các tu viện đã được xây dựng tại những nơi này. Truyền thuyết cũng kể rằng Rinchen Zangpo đã hoàn thành việc xây dựng các gompas ở Alchi, Mangyu và Sumda trong đêm.

Đoàn sẽ dừng chân tại Indus Sangam, nơi hợp lưu của sông Indus và Zanskar. Sông Indus chảy qua Ladakh và Kashmir là con sông lớn nhất Ấn Độ, khoảng 3200km. Sông Zanskar bắt nguồn từ dãy Zanskar và cả hai con sông gặp nhau tại Sangam.

Thật ngoạn mục khi chứng kiến ở đây nước màu ngọc lục bảo của Indus hợp nhất với nước màu nâu của Zanskar. Đây là một trong 10 địa điểm hàng đầu ở Ladakh nếu bạn muốn chiêm ngưỡng một cảnh đẹp khó quên của kỳ quan thiên nhiên.

Likir, nằm cách thị trấn Leh 60km về phía Tây, có thể đến được bằng đường mòn cho xe máy. Likir Gompa được cho là đã được thành lập vào thế kỷ 11 và gắn liền với trật tự Kadam-pa. Tu viện đã được mở rộng trong thế kỷ 15.

Basgo là thủ phủ của vùng thấp hơn Ladakh trong thời xưa và nó được nhắc đến như là thủ đô của Ladakh trong một số cuốn sách xuất bản của các du khách Châu Âu. Basgo là một trong những dinh thự hoàng gia cùng với Leh và Shey.

Gompa tại Basgo được xây dựng bởi Tsewang Namgyal và là tu viện duy nhất ở Ladakh có những bức tranh tường tồn tại từ thế kỷ 16. Đoàn quay về khách sạn nghỉ ngơi, sau khi ăn tối đoàn tự do trải nghiệm tại thành phố Leh.

Sau bữa sáng tại khách sạn, xe đón đoàn tham gia hành trình vượt đèo Khardung-la, đèo dành cho xe cơ giới cao nhất thế giới.

Dừng trên đỉnh đèo, check in và uống 1 ly café, tận hưởng cảm giác trên đỉnh thế giới, dựa lưng vào những vách núi phủ tuyết dày cao đến vài mét từ cả ngàn năm qua. Các hoạt động có thể trải nghiệm trên đường: go karting, lái xe địa hình, bay trên dây (tùy theo nhu cầu của đoàn) Khi đổ đèo Khardung-la, đoàn sẽ chứng kiến sự thay đổi từ sa mạc lạnh giá cằn cỗi sang sa mạc cát trắng ở thung lũng Nubra, đây là một phần của con đường tơ lụa nổi tiếng

Chiêm bái tượng Phật Tương Lai Di Lặc (Maitreya Buddha) cao 106 feet nổi bật trên nền trời là biểu tượng của Từ Bi và Trí Huệ ở tu viện Diskit, thành lập từ thế kỷ 14. Trải nghiệm cưỡi lạc đà 2 bướu ở sa mạc cát trắng ở Hunder.

Nếu còn đủ sức, bạn có thể tản bộ quanh thung lũng yên tĩnh, khi màn đêm buông xuống cùng tận hưởng những khoảnh khắc yên bình đốt lửa trại ngắm bầu trời đầy sao. Đoàn ăn tối và nghỉ ngơi tại khách sạn tiêu chuẩn 4-5 sao tại Nubra, với đầy đủ tiện nghi nhất tại thung lũng vốn không có điện về đêm, do nằm gần biên giới.

NGÀY 6 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm: NUBRA – HỒ PANGONG (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Thức dậy vào buổi sáng ở thung lũng và chuẩn bị sẵn sàng cho ngày được chờ đợi nhất khi bạn sẽ đến thăm hồ Pangong hôm nay, đây là hồ nước mặn cao nhất thế giới, ở độ cao 4.350m, trải dài 155km qua biên giới hai nước Ấn Độ - Trung Quốc.

Trên đường đi, khám phá cảnh quan hùng vĩ với tầm nhìn một bên là núi, một bên là sông Shyok. Điểm độc đáo ở hồ Pangong là khả năng thay đổi màu sắc của mặt hồ khi ánh mặt trời chiếu xuống với rất nhiều màu xanh khác nhau. Đây là nơi quay cảnh cuối trong bộ phim nổi tiếng 3 chàng ngốc. Ở trên hồ, có hẳn những chiếc xe Vespa, chỗ cho thuê quần áo để mọi người chụp ảnh giống như poster phim.

Đoàn ăn tối, đốt lửa trại và nghỉ ngơi tại khu cắm trại quanh hồ Pangong.

NGÀY 7 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm: DI CHUYỂN VỀ LEH QUA ĐÈO CHANGLA (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Dậy thật sớm, và đón bình minh trên hồ Pangong là điều mà bạn sẽ không thể nào quên trong đời. Sau khi ăn sáng, đoàn sẽ di chuyển về Leh, vượt đèo Changla, cao 5.360m, cũng là một trong những đèo cao nhất thế giới.

Ghé thăm ngôi đền Changla Baba trên đỉnh, dành riêng cho tu sĩ mật tông, ngắm những đồi tuyết trắng trên đèo, nghỉ chân uống 1 ly café và tận hưởng tầm nhìn bao quát dãy Himalaya hùng vĩ. Khi về đến Leh đoàn có thể lựa chọn dạo phố, vào chợ địa phương,hoặc nghỉ ngơi tại khách sạn.

Sau một hành trình dài, đoàn cùng nhau thưởng thức bữa tối đặt riêng tại khách sạn hoặc BBQ tại nhà hàng Hàn Quốc.

NGÀY 8 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm : KHÁM PHÁ THÀNH PHỐ LEH (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Sau khi dùng bữa sáng tại khách sạn, đoàn bắt đầu tham quan làng Stok, nằm cách Leh vài km, có tầm nhìn tuyệt đẹp ra đỉnh Stok Kangri.

Khám phá ngôi làng Ladakhi cổ điển này và thưởng thức “bữa trưa Ladakhi” truyền thống được phục vụ nóng hổi trong ngôi nhà 200 năm tuổi của một gia đình người địa phương. Sau đó đoàn tham quan cung điện Stok, di sản kiến trúc tuyệt đẹp này đã gần 200 năm tuổi, được xây dựng hoàn toàn bởi các thợ thủ công người Ladakh, và dùng là nơi ở của Hoàng tộc triều đại Namgyal.

Nơi đây có các căn hộ hoàng gia, phòng cầu nguyện, bảo tàng, những khoảng sân rộng rãi và một ngôi đền.

Thăm quan vườn quốc gia Hemis National Park, điểm đến nổi tiếng của Ladakh, vườn quốc gia Hemis được chú ý bởi hệ động vật hoang dã, bao gồm các loài có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng và chỉ được tìm thấy ở các khu vực có độ cao lớn.

Trước khi về Leh, đoàn sẽ tham quan tu viện Hermis, tu viện nổi tiếng nhất và giàu có nhất ở Ladakh. Nằm cách thủ đô Leh 45km, tu viện Hermis được biết đến với sự kiện tôn giáo kéo dài 2 ngày hàng năm, lễ hội Hermis.

Điểm thu hút chính trong lễ hội là sự mở ra của bức tranh Thangka khổng lồ. Cứ 12 năm một lần, trong lễ hội Hermis, một trong những bức Thangka lớn nhất ở Ladakh lại xuất hiện trước đám đông. Thăm quan tu viện Thiksey, được thành lập năm 1433 sau CN, cách Leh 19km, tọa lạc trên một ngọn đồi, nhìn xuống thung lũng sông Ấn.

Từ đây có thể nhìn toàn cảnh núi Stok hùng vĩ của dãy Himalaya. Tu viện với các màu sắc tương phản của màu đỏ, màu đất son, và điều tuyệt vời là sự giống nhau đến kỳ lạ với cung điện Potala ở Tây Tạng.

Cách trung tâm khoảng 15km về phía Đông là cung điện Shey (Shey Palace) gồm một cung điện và một đền thờ được xây dựng vào năm 1655 bởi Hoàng tộc triều đại Namgyal. Nhà Vua sử dụng cung điện Shey để làm khu nghỉ dưỡng vào mùa hè. Dạo chơi quanh thành phố, đi bộ quanh chợ Leh, mua sắm đồ mỹ nghệ, đồ lưu niệm, đồ ăn vặt. Nghỉ đêm và ăn tối tại khách sạn ở Leh.

NGÀY 9 Tour Ladakh 10 ngày 9 đêm : DELHI - AGRA (ĂN SÁNG, TỐI)

Sau khi ăn sáng, đoàn check out và chuẩn bị ra sân bay, đón chuyến bay đi Delhi. Từ sân bay Delhi, xe đón đoàn thăm quan thủ đô Delhi, chụp ảnh tại Cổng Ấn Độ, cung điện Tổng thống, Tòa nhà Quốc hội và Tòa nhà chính phủ. Đoàn di chuyển tiếp đến Agra. Đoàn nghỉ ngơi, ăn tối ở khách sạn tiêu chuẩn 4-5 sao ở Agra.

Sau khi ăn sáng, sẵn sàng cho chuyến tham quan tại Agra với công trình nổi bật được công nhận là di sản thế giới UNESCO.

Taj Mahal là một trong bảy kỳ quan của Thế giới đương đại và là một trong ba Di sản Thế giới ở Agra. Ngôi đền được xây dựng bằng đá cẩm thạch không chỉ đẹp bởi kiến trúc độc đáo mà còn đẹp bởi câu chuyện tình yêu của Vua Shah Jahan dành cho người vợ yêu quý của mình.

Pháo đài Agra được làm bằng đá sa thạch đỏ từ thế kỷ 16, cách Taj Mahal 2.5km về phía Tây Bắc, được các Hoàng đế Mughal xây dựng khi Agra còn là thành phố thủ đô. Đằng sau những bức tường này là các cung điện, sảnh đường, nhà thờ Hồi giáo Ngọc trai. Đoàn làm thủ tục check out và ăn trưa tại Agra.

Đoàn di chuyển về Delhi, ăn tối tự túc tại sân bay và làm thủ tục chuyến bay về Hà Nội/Sài Gòn. Kết thúc chuyến đi với những kỉ niệm đẹp về dãy núi Himalaya hùng vĩ và những tu viện hàng trăm năm tuổi.

The picture above is of Sammy Sosa. Sosa played in the majors for eighteen years. He played for 4 different teams, but his best years were with the Chicago Cubs. He was one of the best hitters the game has ever seen. He had in his career almost 2500 hits and 609 home runs. He was very talented but also has gotten in trouble before. He is currently not in the hall of fame because he is believed to have been taking steroids. He is eligible to be voted in, but he has not yet been lucky enough.

This freestyle post is not about him being on steroids, it is about another incident that happened to Sammy. In 2003, Sammy was at the tail end of his career and his stats were plummeting. He wanted a way to get back on track. So according to sportscasting, he used an illegal bat. When he was with the Cubs, he was playing the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and in the first inning of that game, he grounded out. He also broke his bat in the process of grounding out. When the bat broke the umpire saw it and picked it up. He called the other umpires over and they discovered that the bat had a cork in it. He was ejected from the game and then suspended by the league. Sammy's excuse for this was that he picked up the wrong bat and that one was for the crowd during batting practice. A corked bat makes the bat lighter, so I believe he deserved to be ejected and suspended. I also think it is fine to use a corked bat during pregame practice because it gives the fans more chances to see a home run.

Butt Karahi ( Lakshmi Chowk )

Lahore is a city of foodies that why anyone finds tasty eatery outlets around the place, offering traditional Pakistani food for decades. Laskhshami chowk is one of the famous places at the heart of Lahore, fetching tourists from all over the world at it's restaurants. Countless of the city’s most famed traditional restaurants occupy the ground floors of the aged buildings around Lakshmi chowk. Yet, one restaurant stands out in terms of reputation and popularity is Butt Karahi. In fact, Butt Karahi has become such a household name in Pakistan, that dozens of copy-cat Butt Karahis have sprung up

If you visit Lakhsami chowk then you'll find side by side outlets with the same name "Butt karahi" but little varied tasty flavors.

Butt Karahi in Lahore needs no introduction. The eatery has been serving Lahore for decades and is one of the best restaurants to visit especially if you are in the mood to enjoy karahi.

Their specialty has always been cooking organic chicken karahi. They even keep organic chickens in the restaurant where a customer can decide how much heavy and healthy chicken they want. The chicken is then slaughtered on the spot and cooked in the form of karahi and is served fresh

Karahi tikka, for the record, is karahi gosht prepared in tikka style masala, without much gravy. What you’d find special about these places is that you have the option to choose the chicken you’d like to eat

The option of getting broiler or desi chicken is also available. The specialty of the karahi is the butter it’s cooked in. You can not only choose to have the makhni karahi , but you can also decide the quantity of butter in it

Up till now, Butt Karahi has been surviving on mediocre seating. People would come and sit outside the restaurant or go in the family halls which were neat and clean but had very simple decor.

We spied out to find secret recipes behind butt mutton karahis of Lackshami chowk, so

Ingredients:

1 kg Desi Chicken

1/4 kg sliced tomatoes

4 medium-sized sliced onions

2 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon cream

2 table spoon Yogurt

1 tablespoon chopped ginger and garlic

According to taste:

Salt

Red pepper

Turmeric

Black pepper

Garam massla

Green chili

Cooking oil

Method:

1. Put mutton, onion, tomato, red chili powder, salt, turmeric, chopped green chili and one glass of water in a pressure cooker and let it cook for 30 minutes.

2. After 30 minutes open the lid of the cooker and shift the mutton from cooker to karahi. Add cooking oil and stir the butt karahi till all water dried out.

3. Now add yogurt and let butt karahi soak the flavor.

Add chopped green chili, sliced ginger, garam masala and continue cooking for 3 minutes.

4. Add fresh cream and butter at the end. Butt karahi is ready.

Decoration:

Now add corridor leaves, green chili, 1/2 tablespoon black pepper, and sliced ginger at the end and mix it well.The real flavor of butt karahi appears with green chili while cooking and black pepper at the end.

Present tasty butt karahi in the same karahi or shift it in another traditional cutlery to make the karahi more appetizing and appealing. Finally, the karahi is served in the karahi pan with fresh roti or naan whichever you prefer. This dish is an absolutely delightful treat if you are desi karahi lover.

Full ( 1 KG) chicken shaandaar karahi which was actually shaandaar and fulfilling enough for 5 foodies and with a full organic chicken being slayed in front of us and then preparing a full 1 Kg chicken unlike other restaurants where we are served 600/800 gm for 1 Kg mentioned dish. It was so worth it’s price the very reasonable price of PKR 1590/-.

And let me talk about the “Talk of the Town” Desi Murgh Karahi, which was made with Organic chicken in butter, the price is a bit high of Pkr 2500/- but it was so worth it’s price.

This Sims 3 Guide was originally written for the PC and Mac versions of the game, but also will help owners of the console versions – PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Please remember some info or numbers may have changed.

This guide has been updated with information for The Sims 3 Supernatural, which brings 11 new plants to the game in the form of bushes and mushrooms. These new plants are used primarily in the new Alchemy skill to make potions. To learn about all the new plants added in Supernatural, click here. Supernatural also brings a new alternate life state, the Fairy. They can use the powerful bloom power to make a plant grow to maturity or become harvestable. They also come with a hidden Green Thumb Trait, so essentially get six Traits.

The Sims 3’s World Adventures expansion pack also brings some exciting additions to the gardening skill. There are now ten more plants that can be grown, and a new way to use fruit. Nectar making goes amazingly well with gardening. You can turn fruit into Nectar, which will age and grow in value over time. Read up on the Nectar Making skill to learn more. Of course the Plant List is updated to show the locations of the new plants along with their rarities and growth times.

This Guide will help newbies by providing a walkthrough for how to get started and learn Gardening in the Sims 3 and its Expansions. Information is provided for all aspects of this skill. I’ll show you how to grow perfect plants, by evolving your plants’ quality over several generations. I also provide a full plant list for the Sims 3, which can be useful for gardeners by helping them in finding the rare types they’ve never grown.

I’ll try to provide all the secrets I’ve learned about gardening to help your Sims make the most money and get the best plants from your crop. Tips for the importance of sprinklers and how they can help to save time, upgrading sprinklers with auto-water and general guidelines for how to lay out your gardens are also provided.

Your Sim doesn’t have to be a large-scale gardener to enjoy the benefits of the Gardening skill. Most Sims will want to someday grow and fish the ingredients for ambrosia. You can easily make a crop of only life plants. Fishermen will also appreciate a nice apple tree in the front yard. Packing an apple for lunch on a marathon day of fishing is a great idea. Used with the steel bladder lifetime reward, one little apple can really go a long way to helping your Sim stay out at the lake longer.

I am striving to learn everything I can about this helpful and profitable Sims 3 skill. The guide has been updated over a dozen times so far, and has slowly evolved into an all-inclusive resource for gardening. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have readers submit tips through our Sims 3 forum, ask questions and deliver feedback to help me improve it. This is the first guide, of the four hundred or so articles about gaming I’ve written that I’ve nurtured and grown to this degree, so I hope I can someday bring it to a level of perfection that rivals my Sim’s garden!

Gardening Self Employment

With The Sims 3: Ambitions installed, gardeners can register self employed at the city hall after learning the first level of Gardening. Promotions depend on the amount earned gardening, and come with bonuses and the occasional trophy. Here’s the breakdown:

Gardening Cheats

There are no cheats in the Sims 3 specific to gardening, but there are some that can be useful to you. First, you can cheat to raise the gardening skill by making your Sim never fatigue, you can then read skill books. See my guide to raising skills by cheating. There, you’ll find information on maximizing mood and needs. Additionally, you can cheat to get any plant in the game. Press Control + Shift + C to open the cheat console, and type testingcheatsenabled true then buydebug. Now enter buy mode and go to sort by function. Click the ? and find the plants section. You can plant any type of fruit, vegetable, or special variety in the game. Harvest just one and you can have your gardener plant them to produce more.

Sprinklers

Sprinklers will help a lot when gardening in the Sims 3. They’ll allow your Sim to have a larger garden, because one of the steps from tend garden, the watering, is taken care of for you, every morning beginning at four o’clock. Plant your crops around sprinklers to maximize efficiency. In the morning, or before your Sim does their daily gardening routine, click on each of your Sprinklers to water all the plants in your garden. Give them a few seconds, then switch them right back off.

How to use automatic sprinklers The biggest tip I can give you for gardening is that you should try to get your handiness skill to at least level four so that you can make automatic sprinklers. You’ll find sprinklers under the outdoor activities tab. Once the sprinkler is placed, select it and try to upgrade. These sprinklers go off every morning and can water a small area.

How to Improve Sprinkler and General Gardening Efficiency It’s best to keep your garden tight together at first so that one sprinkler will do. It’s also more efficient for your Sim to harvest when they can constantly be touching another plant without moving too much. Later, with certain abilities learned through the skill journal, you will have less weeds and your fertilizer can last longer. This also helps your garden to be more efficient.

Making Money Gardening

It takes a bit more work on your part to make money as a gardener than some other methods, but it’s very rewarding gameplay and simoleon-wise. Gardening is just behind painting for my favorite way to be self employed in the game. You can use some of your harvest to help with the cooking skill, while the rest can be sold to the supermarket or used with Nectar Making.

To boost your Sim’s money-making capacity from gardening, consider working toward making your entire garden perfect. You see, Sims can only spend so long gardening each day before they’re exhausted or otherwise interrupted. You want your Sim to spend their time tending better quality plants.

Also keep in mind that it really isn’t worth the time spent by your Sim or the resources consumed by fertilizing low cash-crops like lettuce and even death flowers. Why? Well, you will likely take a loss. Gardening can’t blossom as a money-maker if you’re fertilizing your Sim’s tomatoes with all those Vampire Fish you’ve caught. Use something cheaper, like garlic for these plants. After all, with green thumb, super green thumb, all gardening challenges completed, and level 10 in the gardening skill, your Sim will be pushing plants very close to, if not always perfect anyway. Save the good stuff like perfect life fruit and vampire fish for your money trees and other high value crops!

The Best Plants to grow featuring Money Trees Eventually the gardener’s ultimate wish should be for a crop of Money Trees, Life Fruit plants, Flame Fruit and perhaps fruits for use with Nectar Making. Money trees are the best money makers of all the plants, and life fruit is used as an excellent fertilizer, sells at a decent rate, and is used in the ambrosia cooking recipe. Likewise, Flame Fruit is used in Angel Food Cake, which gives a nice moodlet.

In short, gardening is a great skill, and becomes even more useful to Sims with Nectar Making from the World Adventures expansion pack. It is easily one of my favorite skills in The Sims 3 because of its depth and complexity.

Secret Base Hall of Fame: Pheidippides

This ancient Greek herald inspired two modern-day races

You probably know something about the story of Pheidippides, even if you’ve never heard his name in your life. About 2500 years ago, on the north coast of Attica, Pheidippides is said to have witnessed one of the best-chronicled battles of the classical world. The Persian Empire, seeking to punish Athens for some outrageously cheeky behavior in Asia Minor, despatched an amphibious expeditionary force to Greece, first taking Eretria on the island of Euboea and then making their way southward toward Athenian territory.

The Persian fleet landed at the bay of Marathon, where they found the exits blocked off by a 10,000-strong Athenian army. The Athenians were outnumbered two or three to one, so the sensible thing to do was to hunker down and wait for reinforcements, which were supposed to be on their way from Sparta. Some combination of circumstances — tactical considerations, the distance between Marathon and the Peloponnese, typical Lacedaemonian wankery — meant that those reinforcements never arrived, and Athens faced the invasion almost wholly alone.

It worked out for them: the phalanx drove the invaders back into the sea, inflicting massive casualties for minimal loss. The Battle of Marathon was a decisive victory, deflecting the might of the Persian Empire away from Greece for a decade, and while they’d be back under Xerxes to, among other things, give the Spartans a bad time at Thermopylae*, fending them off for a few decades gave the Hellenes just about enough time to prepare for round two.

*Don’t believe the propaganda, by the way: the action at the Hot Gates was a terrible tactical and strategic defeat for Leonidas, who was definitely not fighting a mere delaying action (and also he ended up dead, which sucked for him).

So where does our hero come in? Communications technology in ancient Greece was not especially advanced, so to get information from place to place, runners were employed. Pheidippides was one such runner, and according to legend, as soon as Athens had won the day at Marathon, he absolutely booked it back home, bringing the relieved citizens news of victory before dying of his exertions. His one-man race was Michel Bréal’s inspiration for the modern, less-deadly, marathon.

The only problem with Pheidippides’s story is that it’s absolute bollocks. Not only was Pheidippides’s news not urgent enough for kill oneself for, the only reasonably-contemporary source we have on the Battle of Marathon is Herodotus, and he makes no mention of a herald racing back to Athens. Instead, it’s the entire Athenian army which makes the trek. Since the Persian fleet was still just about intact and could, in theory, sail right around the Attica Peninsula to launch an attack on Athens itself, they had to move as quickly as possible. With the whole army moving at speed, no herald was required.

Pheidippides does appear in Herodotus, where he is being used rather more sensibly: as Athens’s messenger to Sparta requesting reinforcements as the Persians attacked. He made the 155 mile-journey between cities in less than two days, but the Spartans were too busy washing their hair (or whatever Spartans did, who cares) to move for several more days, and by the time they bothered, the battle had already been won. Not all of Herodotus is believable, but Athens sending an urgent message to a wartime ally makes rather a lot more sense than the better-remembered version.

The first mention of a Marathon-to-Athens dash comes from Plutarch, who was writing more than half a millennium after the battle and had the annoying habit of being sort of full of shit. From there, the Pheidippides legend got somewhat out of hand, ultimately infiltrating European culture to the extent that we now have a whole category of race named after something that never actually happened.

The marathon, however, isn’t the only modern race that owes its existence to Pheidippides. In the 1980s, a group of British air force officers decided to try the more historically-accurate run between Athens and Sparta, creating the Spartathlon. At about six times the length of a ‘real’ marathon and including an ascent of Mount Parthenion, the Spartathlon is a ferociously difficult race, but it is doable in the time said to have been achieved by Pheidippides. The current record, held by Yiannis Kouros, stands at 20 hours, 25 minutes.
