Technically Riku is technically the other hero that gets a form change in DDD. But that's just an outfit change really.
The only character outside of Sora, Donald and Goody to get a proper form change is MFing Pete.
lion pete's great though i'm not gonna even act like i'm mad about that fact

HELP I’m thinking about Komory Bat as representative of Sora again. And Meow Wow as representative of Riku.
Riku dreams of Sora we know he dreams of Sora that’s instrumental in ReMind listen to me his first dream eater represents Sora. Komory Bat is shaking hands with Sora’s Halloweentown vampire form except it doesn’t have any. You know what I mean.
And Meow Wow!! If Sora is represented by Riku’s first dream eater so the reverse must be true. Basic math. Anyways Meow Wow is literally shaped to be hugged it is Riku’s love. Meow Wow is Riku’s love for Sora it is with him from the very beginning
Narratively Sora and Riku are separated in DDD but symbolically they are together listen to me I’m gonna bite something do you understand my vision

Yet Another Kingdom Hearts Revisit, Part VII
I can't speak to what the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts is like, but the English version has always done a brilliant job capturing Jack Skellington's voice. His dialogue reflects every facet of his character: elegant, theatrical, polite, delusional, and just a little pompous. Ooogie Boogie's always been on point too, speaking like the bullying but jazzy slob that he is. And this spot-on character writing is used in an original story! As far as adapting the flavor of a particular Disney movie in the writing - this Disney movie, at a time when the company still treated it like the ugly stepchild - Halloweentown is one of the best.
Visually, it's much less successful. I've never liked the look of Halloweentown in KH I, with its harsh reds and purples and copious amounts of ugly brown. On playing the game again, it might be my least favorite world aesthetically in the game, and the only reason it's not dead last for the entire series is because Port Royal in KH II looked even worse. Port Royal also doesn't have the saving grace that is Oogie's house, which I do think is well-designed. I wish it stuck around even after you defeat him, but I appreciate how that works out story-wise, and it's a fun area to climb and explore while it lasts. The gambling den is the highlight of the house, and the more fun and engaging stage of the fight with Oogie.
And you better believe that I fight him with Jack in my party. His movement and combat suit him just as well as his dialogue, and like Aladdin in KH I's Agrabah, Jack makes the Top 3 for my favorite party members in the series (Ariel's the other, for all the reasons I gave for appreciating Atlantica last time). Having Oogie fight you through gambling first, then a runaway possession by the powers of darkness, is a nice break from the more direct villains that precede him (Hades excepted).
Storywise, Halloweentown is the closest a non-Pooh world comes to being "filler." It's not - it's a world on the brink of destruction that needs saving just like the rest, and Oogie's in the League of Disney Villains - but none of the cutscenes build on the larger story or the lore the way every previous world does. It's the most self-contained adventure within the larger framework of "we must rescue Disney from darkness." I don't raise that as a complaint, though. It's rather nice to have a lighter world at this point in the game.
Neverland is much more embedded into the larger story, and it's an extremely well-written one. And yet I don't have too much to say about it; its virtues so far as driving Riku along the path to darkness, taking another step toward explaining what's up with Kairi, and giving Sora another step up in his hero's journey, are self-evident. And it's another world where the voice of a particular Disney character (Captain Hook in this case) is captured flawlessly. I don't think I fully appreciated how well he's handled before, but as far as lines and facial animation go, he may now be my favorite of the Disney villains used in this game.
Gameplay-wise, my biggest frustration with Neverland is that there's really one one combat area where you can really take off with flight. I'm sure the claustrophobia of the ship was by design, and I don't mind so much of the action taking place within the Jolly Roger, but it would be great to have a second open space where you can fly around unencumbered for regular combat.
Of course, you can fight Phantom in an open space, and I really love this boss. It was a nightmare fighting him the fist time I ever picked up this game, but as soon as you figure out his orb, it's easy (in principle, at least) to know what to do. It's not even that hard to beat him with a full party as long as you're willing to be generous with Stop magic. But he is still a challenge, and like with Kurt Zisa, I like that he demands a good mix of magic and physical attacks. I get why later games opted for more elaborate fights with main villains in lieu of these kinds of one-off Heartless fights, but I do miss them.

No okay but @venjamin-kingdomhearts ‘s joke/idea about Ventus and Repliku as a ship hit me like a train wreck.
Because now that everything is fixed, they’re all together and happy, the trios are together — what’s going on with these two?
As much as Ventus loves Aqua and Terra, they treat him more like a kid than an equal. It’s hard to hang out with Twilight kids bc he feels either like a stand in for Roxas or an awkward shadow. Sora would always welcome him, but regardless of how close they are in heart, Sora is lighthearted and free in a way that he just can’t make himself be. Being on Destiny islands is like trying to look in on a normal life that Ven never got. It’s hard, and it feels lonely. Even trying to travel with the Destiny trio makes him feel like a 4th wheel; there’s so many inside jokes he just doesn’t know how to laugh at.
And Repliku. The only people he knows are Namine and Riku and Sora. He tried to kill the Destiny island kids and it’s still awkward interacting with them at all. Even with his memories of the island, it’s not like he’s a real person right? How could he ever build connections with someone who has no memories of who you are, and tons of expectations of who you should be like? Namine is happy to talk with him, but the memories and struggles in the Organization still put a strain in their relationship. Namine more than anything wants to have a happy normal life, and even if she will never quite be just an average kid, she really gets people in a way that Repliku just doesn’t. She can’t be there just to entertain him, and he can see her struggle to get him to fit in with friendly gatherings.
So they both find themselves alone a lot. Walking through cities and towns, watching sunsets and starts, wandering the worlds to fill up their days. Maybe trying to pick up a hobby like astronomy or drawing, but always finding themselves back to training. It’s what they’ve always known, as far along as their real memories exist.
So why couldn’t they notice each other training? Outside Disney castle, or Yen Sid’s tower, or around the Land of Departure, and step in to say hi?
‘Would you like a sparring partner?’ Repliku would say.
‘Can you show me how you did that move?’ Ventus would ask.
An opening here and there, hesitant questions and banter slowly becoming more confident:
‘You know it’s funny, but I feel like we only ever meet up at these bright sunny places, you ever been to Halloweentown?’
Or
“You think those guys ever eat anything but paopu fruit?” Repliku.
“Nah, but at least it’s better than Twilight Town, I swear everyone of them is just obsessed.” Ventus.
A glance from Repliku, smirk on his face,
“You know based on the company we keep, you might say we’re the only ones with taste.”
And Ventus’s ugly snort makes Repliku’s smile turn real.
And slowly it would turn into other conversations:
‘Sometimes it’s hard, you know? Seeing them move on? I feel like I’m always just on the edge of the next threat.’
‘I don’t know how to get back to a normal I never had.’
And conversations turn to invitations turn to planning meeting ups turn to suddenly always being by their side, or at least just a text away.
And one day, Ventus tries to deal Riku a shovel talk for Sora and just fails spectacularly. Repliku, ‘happening to be by’ just starts cackling at the scene, and Riku looks concerned and confused more than anything.
So Ventus snags him arm in a fit of pique and says something like ‘if you date my brother I’m gonna date yours!’ It had been meant as a threat, Ventus thinks, but Riku is looking worried for his sanity, and Repliku’s face has gone blank. And so he drops his arm and falls awkwardly silent. He leaves.
Repliku and Riku share a confused glance and a nod: ‘we’re going to just pretend this never happened, and spare us all the embarrassment’ is what they say without words. But Repliku doesn’t drop it.
He go out and finds Ventus, where he always goes to brood, and sits down next to him.
“Did you mean that?” Repliku asks, staring forward. “I know you speak before you think, sometimes, but you sounded serious for a moment.”
It’s quiet for a long moment, and Ventus is tense beside him.
Repliku swallows and his voice is weaker with his next words, “For you to have said that at all, means you must have been thinking about it, right?”
Another moment passes, and Repliku has run out of steam. If something is going to change here, it’s going to have to be at Ventus’s behest.
Finally, he speaks, “Would you still treat me the same, if I said yes?” His voice sounds rough, like he’s been crying.
“No,” Repliku says, and Venus startles, head snapping to the side. As Repliku turns to meet his shocked expression, he can feel a grin on his face, so beyond relieved, “I’m not sure I should treat a boyfriend the same as just a friend. Though I don’t think we’ve ever really just been friends, hmm?”
He nudges Ventus’s frozen shoulder, and suddenly find himself half on the ground. He’s near tackled them both, arms wrapped tight around Repliku. It’s uncomfortable and he feels trapped, but he can’t bring himself to push him away just yet.
“Is that a yes from you, then?”
Ventus nods against his shoulder, and once his frees his arms, they sit there together for a long time, just watching the stars.

mmmmm in terms of gameplay i started getting sick of throwing cards around bc i went around halloweentown doing all the big rooms with tons of heartless because riku's deck was really good in that world so i wanted to do some level-upping
so i ended up skipping a ton of rooms and somehow still managed to cheese my way through three world bosses??? which is kinda funny bc every previous world i did i beat every single enemy in every single room i opened and still struggled with some of the bosses but... this is so much easier for my brain HSLDKFJSLDKJS
idk what happens if you talk to sora in destiny islands so i'm just gonna pause there for now but .

Disney Worlds in KH are always funny because sometimes you’ll get this really interesting storyline that runs parallel to the arcs in the movie but in a way that fits the themes of the game like Halloweentown in KHI or the Stitch world in BBS, or follows up on it in an interesting way like Big Hero 6’s and Monsters Inc.’s KHIII worlds, and sometimes you get “The Disney Movie, But X is There.”
And I mean, sometimes they work! Agrabah is an “And Sora Is There” world but he has good chemistry with Aladdin and the Disney cast. The Princesses’ worlds in BBS are “And the Wayfinders Are There” worlds but having three people visiting in different orders leads to some very interesting dynamics (particularly with regards to Terra and his getting tricked into playing villain at first, and what Aqua does with that information.) But sometimes, you get a photorealistic CGI Jeff Bridges awkwardly expositing the plot of Tron Legacy to Riku in a cyber outfit, or “Let It Go” with Sora, Donald and Goofy just randomly there.
… Then again, those are VERY funny.
(In fairness to Arendelle, it’s such a complete mess that I have to believe either Disney was VERY strict about what Sora could do interacting with Elsa and Anna, and that resulted in a time-wasting ice labyrinth that doesn’t appear in the movie, or its development started before the movie came out and was working off a non-final script, the ice labyrinth made sense there, Disney then got a mega-hit and told them to make it more like the movie, and they had to get this game out eventually so we’re keeping the ice labyrinth. It’s still an incoherent, meandering mess of a world, but given Tangled’s was a fine “And Sora Is There” world I have to assume SOMETHING went wrong to make it as awkward as “dropping Sora straight from the end of the first movie to the climax of the third so Sora could leave with no loose ends” with The Caribbean.)

You've drawn werewolf riku in Halloweentown with sora before, have any ideas about him in that form?
Aayy kudos for remembering that!
I guess outside of being in Halloween Town, the most prominent thing that comes to mind for R/iku being a wolfboy is that he decides he's just gonna start eating any threats to his friends from now on. No need to worry about all the convoluted schemes, monologues about light and darkness, and various versions of someone if you just gobble them up on the spot.
There's also all the fun of him still traveling across worlds but now with his wolfish appetite leading to all sorts of fun trouble. "Sorry S/ora, I really don't know where your token D/isney partner for this world went *URP* Guess you'll have to partner up with me again." Not that S/ora would be any the wiser. All he knows is R/iku needs more tummy rubs, keyholes and the like be damned.
God forbid they end up in the W/reck-It Ralph world. "The wolfboy gets the pancakes~"

What are Sora’s thoughts on HalloweenTown? c:
Tumblr media
𝕾𝖔𝖗𝖆’𝖘 𝖊𝖞𝖊𝖘 𝖑𝖎𝖙 𝖚𝖕, 𝖗𝖊𝖈𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖔𝖗𝖑𝖉 𝖍𝖊 𝖑𝖔𝖛𝖊𝖉 𝖘𝖔 𝖒𝖚𝖈𝖍. 𝕬 𝖕𝖆𝖗𝖙 𝖔𝖋 𝖍𝖎𝖒 𝖜𝖔𝖓𝖉𝖊𝖗𝖊𝖉 𝖎𝖋 𝕵𝖆𝖈𝖐 𝖜𝖆𝖘 𝖉𝖔𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖔𝖐𝖆𝖞. It had been a few years since he was last there, too much going on to really take time to drop by, which did make the brunette sad. It seemed like wherever he went, his heart would connect to others, but in the end, either he hardly saw them much after or walls between worlds made it increasingly harder to travel. It did nothing to soothe the worry that maybe they would end up forgetting Sora even existed. Not like that hasn’t happened before.
“Halloween Town is honestly one of my favorite places, it’s festive, and the only light is the bright moon in the sky which gives off a very creepy vibe. It has a lot of different areas to explore too which some I didn’t even found out about until my second visit there.  All the people there, aside from a few, are really nice. Which might surprise some, considering it’s Halloween all year for them. I know when I told Riku and Kairi about the world, they wondered how scary everything was. I was still young at the time, but nothing really scared me. I felt comfortable, but maybe that was because I had seen scarier things before that time.
I do remember the last time I visited, I got to explore Christmas Town, which meant seeing Santa.I was so excited to meet him too, and before anyone asks, Yes I did ask if I was on the nice list. Who wouldn’t want to know but, looks like because of a certain someone said Santa wasn’t real, I ended up on the naughty list. Thank you very much, Riku," Sora mumbled as the brunette leaned back. His face puffed out slightly, recalling how much of an influence the keyblade master had on him when they were kids.
“I still haven’t gotten that dinosaur plushie I wanted as a kid, either. Riku..you owe me one. I don’t care if we are older!” Sora honestly didn’t care about it, since just spending time with his friends was enough. It didn’t hurt to tease the other, though.

Biggest reason I finally want the Destiny Trio to go adventuring together?
Form Changes.
Give me ALL the cute outfits! Give Witch Kairi in Halloween Town or Sora being jealous that Riku is almost a full grown lion while he's still just a cub in the Pride Lands! See who truly is the best swimmer "Under de Sea" or the kids getting to live out their dream as full fledged pirates.
Nomura please!!!
ACTUALLY the biggest crime we never see anyone else get form changes nomura brother you gotta ammend this asap

Yet Another Kingdom Hearts Revisit, Part VI
Atlantica is my favorite world in KH I. It may be my favorite world in the entire series. That isn't because I love the movement mechanics of the underwater world, though I do enjoy them. And it's not because I love the storytelling in this world, though I do think it's a brilliant section for plot, character, and lore (more on all those momentarily). It's my favorite because Ariel is an option for your battle party.
That might seem a slight reason, but The Little Mermaid is not only one of my favorite Disney films, but one of my favorite films full stop. Depending on my mood on a given day, it may take the top slot on a Disney list. But the one substantive issue I have with it is a big one: despite Ariel being the heroine, every other element of the film existing to service her story, she has almost nothing to do with defeating the villain who manipulated and betrayed her. Worse, she ends up a damsel in distress at the bottom of whirlpool. For Kingdom Hearts to make Ariel a party member who can fight against Ursula - in both forms - was so gratifying the first time I played this game, and it's remained so ever since. If KH III deserves credit for nothing else, bringing back Ariel as a Link Summon (the most useful one after Simba IMO) was a great move, but combat-ready Ariel in your party as part of a story that pays off all her talents and personality still takes the cake, and it's one of the best things this series has ever done with a Disney character. (It also removed the only possible rationale for giving The Little Mermaid the live action remake treatment, but I'll spare you my thoughts on that ongoing enterprise today.)
Ariel's dynamic with Sora is also one of the strongest between him and a Disney character from outside Mickey's realm. They've got a nice big sister-little brother vibe. Had the Kingdom Hearts TV series ever panned out, it would've been great to see that expanded on. But there's also some nice thematic work achieved through their relationship, Ariel's wanderlust mirroring Sora's from earlier in the game and Sora having become world-weary by that point. Given how pronounced that quality became in KH II, it's a shame that aspect couldn't have been tapped again.
And then there's King Triton, better-versed in Keyblade lore than Sora, Riku, the Traverse Town crew, and even Genie. Whoever's idea that was in the writing process, it was a great choice, and well-placed within the narrative. Had the possibility of a destructive Keyblade master come up too soon, it might have made it too easy to predict some of the twists in Hollow Bastion; too late, and there wouldn't have been time for a sense of foreboding to build. Though I do wish the graphics of the time would have let Triton's destruction of the crystal trident been a little more like his attack on the grotto from the film (the scariest scene in a Disney film for little-kid-me).
Gameplay wise, I prefer Ursula's first stage to the second. Once you get the hang of avoiding their attacks, the big-head enemies in KH I are a little too easy IMO. The first stage is more involved. On the other hand, defeating the big-head Ursula with Ariel in the party is a more cathartic experience, for all the reasons mentioned above.
Finally, I'd be curious to learn more about the music decisions for KH I. How did Atlantica and Halloweentown come to be the only worlds (besides the Disney Castle cutscenes) to use music from their respective films? I'm glad they did; playing along to "Under the Sea" is great. But Yoko Shimomura could certainly have come up with something fitting.
