Did You Know that in Halo 3: ODST, the IWHBYD skull enables some mission-specific dialogue between the player character and their ODST squadmate? Their lines are chosen randomly from a list of four to five possible options.
Which combo of Alpha-Nine has your favorite dynamic?

I took a couple of weeks off from trying to finish that last level of Halo ODST, the Evil Incarnate known as Coastal Highway, because it was straight up frustrating me that I couldn’t find a strategy that would get me through it. I mean, come on, fam, I did a deathless run on Heroic in The Library! I did Two Betrayals on Legendary! I did frickin’ Gravemind on Legendary (I even got the frick frackin’ PAR TIME on Gravemind which was utter ridiculousness to do)! I beat the Prophet of Regret on Legendary even though it took me a week or so of trying. I managed to get the achievement where you have to kill every Elite on the level Keyes on Heroic and do you have any idea how many Elites HIDE on that level??? Did you know there’s a pair of Hunters in a back corridor fighting the Flood towards the end? Because I didn’t know that until I had to start searching all of the corridors on all of the levels, looking for Elites, and instead I found that battle going on. I even turned a random corner and found half a dozen Flood just standing there chillin’ like they were having a little brunch party with tea and tiny cucumber sandwiches or something, lol! 😱😂 They all turned and looked at me like “What? 🤷‍♀️” before they attacked, lol!
Anyway, point being, up until ODST’s Coastal Highway on Legendary, I’d managed to find a way to finally get through, even if it took a lot of tries. But CH being an escort mission where I swear Dare and Virgil die if somebody looks at them too much...
Tumblr media
...and if you rush ahead to try and clear the path for them, then YOU die if somebody looks at you too much...
Tumblr media
...nothing worked. There are 12 SECTIONS TO THAT HIGHWAY ZOMG. And the hardest one, where you get Banshees, Ghosts AND infantry all attacking you and your fragile escortee (word of the day 😛) but if you make it to the next “garage” you get the tank, you think, yay, I’m out of the woods! NOOOOOO, you get the tank but there’s no checkpoint. If you die before the tank makes it to the NEXT garage area, you go back and have to fight the Banshees et al in Gauss hog again! And you want to commit absolute murder.
Tumblr media
That was the point where I threw my hands in the air and thought, yeah, I don’t think I can get this one. And I moved on to Reach and got all of the achievements I could for it (there are a bunch that turned out to be only for multiplayer, unfortunately 😕). But now I’m done with Reach for the most part and was sitting here recuperating from being sick and I thought, Hm, maybe somebody has some different tutorials or something out there that I missed on Youtube? And fam, I found one!!!
youtube
MythicTyrant has some different strategies than from some of the other tutorials I’ve seen but the main thing that made a difference to me was where he said to get through this mission, you have to achieve balance between protecting yourself and protecting Dare and Virgil in the Olifant. When you’re taking too much damage, hang back and bail out of the Warthog/Gauss hog and let Buck keep shooting on the turret (the ‘hogs are invincible when Buck is the only one in them because HE’S invincible). When the Olifant starts taking too much damage, push forward and again bail out and let them target Buck because he’ll be fine.
Fam. This was the strategy I needed to hear. I literally wrote notes down and propped them up in front of me so I could remember what was coming with the next section once I left each garage, which way I needed to go, whether to push forward immediately or hang back, etc.
And, finally, at loooooonnnnnngggg last...
Tumblr media
... I made it! Once I got off that dang highway, the final battle was a piece of cake! (Ais’ Tip of the Day if you’re ever having trouble with the final fight: use the tank. It can’t go through the opening but you can push the abandoned car over, use it as a ramp and stick the front of the tank through. As long as it’s there, that’s breaking the barrier that otherwise won’t let you return. Then as the waves of enemies come in, retreat to the tank, back it up so that nobody can kill your precious and hide it part of the way in the tunnel where just the turret can shoot out the openings. Then BLAST ‘EM OFF THE PLANET. It works, frens! Oh and be sure to give Buck and Dare either rocket launchers or fuel rod guns before the fight begins. They are BOSS with those and will take out anybody who gets near them. Virgil will be safe and sound behind them.)
Mannnn, I’m so happy with this one! I mean, I’m happy with all of them but this one I had to really struggle and grind away for. Heh, all that work just to get a little banner to light up, lol. But, darn it, it’s MY little banner and it means something to me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I really need to make some more Halo GIFs, lol.)
Anyway, since getting sick derailed all of my plans, I didn’t get any more writing done like I’d hoped, so everything will now be folded into my NaNoWriMo, which will be starting on Nov 1. I’m not planning on starting Halo 3 until after NaNo, but instead will just go back and play CE, 2, Reach and ODST for fun now. Yay, I remember fun, lol! 😉
Love to you all and hope you’re all doing well. 💖

Halo Media Post
For those of you who, like me, didn't delve outside of the games for the lore of this verse for a really long time or have never done it before. This post is for you! I've included quite a bit in here!
Movies:
The Fall of Reach - A 1 HR movie detailing the augmentation of the Spartan II program and the origins of Blue Team as seen in Halo 5.
Forward Unto Dawn - A story about Captain Lasky's origins in the UNSC 31 years prior to Halo 4, and how John was the inspiration behind him becoming a military leader.
Halo: Nightfall - I haven't seen this one yet, but I do know that it centers around Spartan Locke prior to his days of being a Spartan IV!
Novels:
Shadows of Reach - I just finished this book and i HIGHLY recommend it. It follows the plot post Halo 5 and Blue Team having to return to Castle Base to acquire assets Doctor Halsey left behind. Dare from ODST makes an appearance and confirms she and Buck DID go canon which no one is surprised by at all. 10/10!
Oblivion - If the UNSC has any chance of stemming the tide of the war, the Master Chief and Blue Team must drop onto an empty, hellish world in order to capture a disabled Covenant frigate filled with valuable technology. It has all the makings of a trap, but the bait is far too tempting to ignore—and this tantalizing prize is being offered by a disgraced and vengeful Covenant fleetmaster, whose sole opportunity for redemption lies in extinguishing humanity’s only hope of survival… haven’t read this one yet but I plan on it.
The Fall of Reach - This book heavily features Blue Team’s origins and the beginnings of the Spartan 2 program. I recommend it too. Haven’t read it yet, but if it is anything like the movie, it will absolutely be worth it!
Silent Storm - Directly after The Fall of Reach, this novel covers the earliest efforts to capture Covenant weapons and tech to develop countermeasures against them. It’s led mostly by the Spartan II’s - who would be teenagers at this point - and introduces a concept i didn’t know about until three seconds ago where John jumps FOUR RANKS and makes it to Master Chief at FIFTEEN. Haven’t read yet, but already 10/10!
There are A LOT of other Halo novels, but these are the ones I have just heard the most about!

I ordered this shirt a month or two ago, from Respawn.co, it arrived today and I could not be happier. It’s such a simple design, but it’s also just... ODST. Unfortunately, it’s not being sold (here) anymore, but as this isn’t their first Halo shirt, it’s safe to assume it’s not their last either. I recommend them.

Okay, so I have a habit of talking out loud to my Halo game while I play. For example, in Halo 3 ODST, “Uplift Rising” there’s a point where one of the marines asks you (Dutch) to do something about the Wraiths and I inevitably say, “Well, pal, I’ll try but they’re probably going to kill me a few times first.” It’s just my thing. 😁
Then I got to thinking that I tend to call many of the characters by some sort of pet/nickname (except for my ODST team, oddly; I just call them by their names 🤷‍♀️). So here, for your reading pleasure (???) are the off-the-cuff things I call other characters in the Halo games:
*SPOILERS FOR ALL GAMES MENTIONED*
Halo: Combat Evolved
Captain Keyes - Dad (He started it by calling me son when he gave me his Magnum so that’s not on me 😇)
Cortana - Babe (She’ll say something like “Keep your head down, there’s two of us in here now, you know!” and I’ll say something back like, “I’m doing my best here, babe!”)
The Flood Infection forms - Cabbages (“Get away from me, you evil little cabbages!” Must be said with ABSOLUTE BLAZING SCORN as well. 😡😂)
All other Flood forms - Bozos (“Get away from me, you buncha Bozos!” Note: that’s referring to the clown, not the guy who started Amazon, a small but distinct difference in spelling. 🤷‍♀️😇)
Halo 2
Sgt Avery Johnson - Boss (He’ll complain that I made him trade his sniper rifle for whatever “lesser” gun I had and I’ll say, “Sorry, boss. Them’s the breaks.”)
The Elites who show up to help the Arbiter - My Good Dudes (They’ll be all “Look, it’s the Arbiter!” and I’ll say, “Thanks for coming, my good dudes! I appreciate it!”)
The Grunts who show up to help the Arbiter - My Good Little Dudes
Rtas ‘Vadum/Shipmaster - Bud (As in ”Good of you to show up, Bud!” or “Well, I’d rather you’d come down the elevator with me since you’re invincible, Bud, but stay here if that’s what you’ve gotta do.”)
Halo: Reach
Carter - Sir (Apparently the only member of Noble Team I respect??? 🤷‍♀️😇 Except I sometimes get a bit of an attitude about it. He’s all “Hurry up and get that AA gun offline, Six!” and I’ll say “I’m literally TRYING, sir. Like, right this second, I’m trying but they’re shooting at me.”)
Kat - Baby (I spend way too much time trying to coax her into getting into a Warthog with me: “Come on, baby, just get in the Warthog and we’ll go destroy the AA gun. It’ll be fun, I promise!!!”)
Jun - Pal (He’ll tell me I assassinated that Elite really nicely and I’ll give him a chipper, “Thanks, pal, that means a lot to me!”)
Emile - Baby Boy (I have no idea why I call him and only him this but I do it the entire game, lol. “Baby boy, I’m just trying to save your life here, trust me!”)
Jorge - I call him by his name but almost always add “I love you” to it. “Jorge, I love you, thanks for taking out that Skirmisher, he was about to shoot my butt off!” Occasionally might give him a “big man” but always with the ILU. Because I freakin’ love Jorge. 🥰
Halo 3
Cortana - Sweetheart (She has a rough go of things in this one so most of the time it’s a very sympathetic sweetheart, unless she interrupts me with a vision and I nearly die because of it. “Sweetheart, I appreciate that you’re hurting but you’re gonna get me killed if you keep doing that!”)
Sgt Avery Johnson - Bro (If you know this game, you know when I was saying, “No, bro, NOOOOOOO...” 😭😭😭 But previously, when he was up on the hill sniping the Flood for me, I kept saying, “Thanks, bro!”)
The Flood Stalker forms - Evil Spiders (Kinda self-explanatory if you’ve ever seen them skittering around. *shudder*)
The Flood Tank forms - TAAAAAAANK!!! (Very helpful to say out loud in order to warn, um, myself that one of them is coming at me. 😳🤷‍♀️)
Master Chief - Since this is, uh, me in all of the games, I usually just say something like “Chief’s coming, hang on!” but in this game, in the Cortana level where you rescue her and she’s all mentally wrecked and tells you she wants to get out of there, I hand-to-God blurted out, “Don’t worry, sweetheart, Big Daddy’s got you!” 😳😳😳 I have no idea where that came from. I just... Yeah. Whatever. Emotions were running high at the time, what can I say? 😳😳😳😇
Annnd that’s all that I can think of at the moment and I think that’s actually plenty, lol! Oh and as you might’ve noticed, I just finished Halo 3. My feelings were a little mixed as I was playing it, GOOD LAWD some of these levels are LONG, but I appreciate it more now that I’m done. I’m going to go back and explore the levels more, have some fun with them, now that I’m not *game on, face* trying to win, you know? 😣😉

what was halo 3 like when u first played it?
Greetings Anon ^^
Oh I was amazed by the game, I was fascinated by the plot, the graphics and how much new content was added, compared to Halo 2.
However, now that I think of it, that does not replace the fact that the campaign felt, rushed.
In my opinion it was too short, I think there where around two or three missions that played on the Ark, the rest either way played on Earth, in the ruins of High Charity...or on the Halo installation.
I wish Halo 3 would have had the same length, as Halo 2, the second game felt more interesting and fascinating to explore.
The more I think about it, the more I believe I can say that I enjoyed Halo 3. ODST more.
Yours sincerely
Bowler
