“Shufu, it is all a misunderstanding—” But it does not make much of a difference. Wei Wuxian is more than six inches taller than he is, and the Lans are taller still. They are perfectly able to talk over his head. Not for the first time, Meng Yao reflects with teeth-grinding frustration that perhaps he should take to wearing a very tall hat.
I just read "both the prison and the open hand (bells on low, on high)" by ariaste on ao3 and I definitely didn't do the scene justice but the idea of modernau!JGY thinking wistfully of his ridiculous hat made me laugh too much not to desperately try to scribble out the scene

I thought Kim's portrait looking a little like the Rising Moon Hanafuda card was just a neat coincidence but I actually like the idea of Kim symbolising a moonrise instead of a sunrise. the Sun is the brightest star in the sky and when it's gone the Moon keeps reflecting its light. what if (if you play him as a huge communard) Harry dies just like Mazov and Kim becomes the "echo maker", the one who spreads his message

Some cute (older and ultimately unfinished) things from Carmen's Wano inserts. I've been thinking about Wano alot lately and meant to post her Hanafuda card with her cheerleading moment, but whoops! Wanna do her reactions to Misery and Damned Punk soon. Oh, and I'm gonna draw Kid in the Udon prison uniform soon since we were robbed of such a given outfit change.

If Jyushi knows how to play Yu-Gi-Oh then Kuko needs to know something with cards because the Mixed Up drama track said that Hitoya used to do card tricks. Bad Ass Temple is just skilled at cards.
kuukou seems to be bad at card games actually lol; in the arb main story iirc, bat and riodice play a card game together and i think kuukou was the first to lose, or just really early on LOL and there’s also this lol:

🇯🇵 Elliott’s Japan Trivia Corner 🇯🇵
This is a short(ish) one to wait while I get a refresher course on the chaos that is Japanese names in feudal times.
🎴Hanafuda🎴 aka Flower Cards
As everyone knows from That One Video, Japan’s borders were 🚫CLOSED SHUT🚫 during the entirety of the Edo era... except that those closed borders were actually Swiss cheese.
🤝Edo-era Japan notably traded with the Chinese, the Korean and the Dutch. The latter introduced 🃏playing cards to the archipelago, and the Japanese took to them like a duck to water, and quickly developed a bad habit of gambling. 🎲
👑The shonugate, which as mentioned in an earlier post about kabuki, didn’t like many things and especially didn’t like having fun*, responded to this by banning playing cards. So the Japanese developed new types of cards, which progressively got more and more ornate to the point where there was no writing, numbers or anything on them that could distinguish them from purely aesthetic objects. Yeah, the Japanese are pretty creative when it comes to avoiding shogunal bans.
Like their name suggests, hanafuda cards represent various 🌸flowers and 🌲plants, and as their name doesn’t suggest, a few 🦌animals as well, and one (1) 🙋‍♂️human, which you really don’t want to draw when playing koi-koi because you can’t do much with him.
There are twelve suits (one for each month📅) of four cards, each suit represented by a plant – pine for January, plum blossoms for February, cherry blossoms for March, and so on. 🍁📚Many of them reference famous pieces of classical Japanese literature and poetry.
*To be fair to the shogun, gambling came with a host of other problems, namely violent gangs of professional gamblers, the ancestors of the Yakuza. Allegedly, the yakuza get their name from the losing hand in a game played with these cards: "yatsu-ku-san" (8-9-3).
Did you know? Nintendo, the famous video game editor, was founded in 1889, and was originally a hanafuda manufacturer!

Here’s a snippet of the October phone background for Patreon and Ko-Fi. It’s based on the October hanafuda card, which is the maple leaf! The highest point maple card has a deer.

Today's Hanafuda Spotlight: March
Flower: Cherry Blossom
Tumblr media
Symbolism:
First up, the grass type Pokémon I picked to represent the Cherry Blossom is none other than Cherrim, from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum! The sunny form is absolutely perfect for the role, so I have groups of them running up and down the branches.
The first card is a Hikari, (Bright) card, one of Five special cards in the Hanafuda. Here, it depicts a curtain, allowing for view of the Cherry Blossom.
I picked Jirachi for this card, as well as retaining the curtain itself, because Jirachi is the Wish Pokémon, having Tanzaku (Ribbons) part of its aesthetic goes well with the scene depicted.
Chimecho however is a better shaped Pokémon to represent the Tanzaku, which in this instance has written on it "Red - Pretty good!" (Most of the original cards have red Tanzaku) - There is a purposeful choice here on my part, that deviates from the original deck in two ways (if you can figure out)
So with that, please enjoy March!

Okay,,,, my delusional brain decided to start a new project!! And it is Pokémon themed!! I decided to draw the gym leaders, elite four and the chairwoman of the Pokémon league in the style of Hanafuda cards. And here is the first sketch I did. This is for February/ the ume cards. I decided to warm up with a character that I am very familiar with, Grusha. I will post the sets of months as soon as they are done. The actual start with January/ the matsu cards makes Hassel, so you will see him finished first. I am really excited for this project, and I hope you are too!
