Henry (Hammerin' Hank) Aaron broke the major league record with his 715th career home run.
One example of the respect he had among his peers was the Dodger infielders shaking his hand as he rounded the bases.
Hank was a man of remarkable dignity and humility. For the last few years as he chased the record he received constant death threats.
And he never 'took' anything stronger than his chewing gum.

Happy anniversary to Hank Aaron!! On this day, in Atlanta, in 1974, hall of famer, Hank Aaron, hit his record breaking 715th home run off of Dodgers pitcher, Al Downing. He broke Babe Ruth's record with that home run and went on to hit a total of 751 home runs in his career. Way to go, Hank!!!! He's a legend for a reason. He played with heart. He holds many records and has inspired many people to play baseball and give it everything they can. I love you, Hammering Hank!!! I miss watching you play. You were the personification of what baseball means to me and what baseball should be. Thank you for all of it!!! 😍💜💜💜⚾️

Cartoonist Charles Schulz used the Peanuts gang to take on detractors of Henry Aaron during his pursuit of Babe Ruth's career home run record.
Aaron received many letters much worse than Snoopy's (and way too vile to reprint). He read all of them. "I had to know what I was up against," he stated later.
Aaron eventually passed Ruth at the start of the 1974 season. Interestingly, he also set the career mark for runs that day too, a detail often eclipsed by the home run record.
