Biography (TW: eating disorder, dysfunctional family dynamics):
Mallory grew up in a well-to-do household consisting of her father Garrett, her mother Lisbeth and her brother Scott. Growing up, Scott was praised for his academic and ultimately financial successes. He was heavily favored over Mal and while the family actively nurtured, praised and supported him because of his perceived potential and successes, his sister was not given the same treatment.
The stark difference in treatment from their parents, and the fear that they would one day show him the same coldness they showed Mallory on a daily basis lead Scott to start picking on his sister and believing there was something wrong with her. During their school years, he spread rumors about her and turned her friends against her. He would make fun of her average grades, often pointing out her academic inadequacy over the dinner table. Knowing the importance their parents ascribed to physical beauty, he would also make fun of his sister's appearance and most notably her weight.
Mal consequently developed a feeling of inferiority that manifested itself in the form of an eating disorder. This disorder stayed with her all throughout high school. To this day, she regularly binges on fatty foods, stuffing herself painfully full and then purging all of the food by sticking her fingers down her throat. Despite this being an open family secret, it is never openly discussed by Garret and Lisbeth. Their daughter’s eating disorder is a source of shame for them, and thus it was left untreated.
I am a Jindosh apologist because he is a terrible little 6'5 man and if I don't defend him online who will? I am not a Breanna apologist because Breanna did nothing wrong that needs my defence in the first place. Occupies a conservatory with huge taxidermy owls? Has a coven of witches that doubles as a women's shelter? Skinned some dude in her office? Is helping the coup because she is in love with Delilah? Ran away from her shitty arranged marriage? Poisoned all the remaining guards who were at Stilton's Manor for the seance after she got them to kill each other? Can flip you over her head with one arm? All based. We can't be Breanna.
Two things that made Hollyoaks stand out as one of the better ed depictions:
1. They made a character fucking die from her eating disorders. Actually die, showing just how fatal and deadly they truly can be. The first death from an eating disorder shown on tv in British soap opera history if I remember correctly
2. They reinforced the idea that relapses happen, they are a part of recovery and aren’t uncommon. They. Actually. Showed. Hannah. Relapse. And showed her recovery process and her therapy sessions.
