When I was little, my dad hired a Cambodian refugee called Jack to help him drywall a dining room ceiling. Jack spoke very little English; he'd recently gotten a part time job in a little Asian deli not far from our home and needed to pick up some extra work. He was very kind to six year old me and my exhausted mom; he brought us day old leftovers from the deli counter often, and liked to tuck the knuckle of his index finger into the dimple in my cheek whenever I smiled at him.
He soaked up construction skills and other information like a sponge, and by the time he left my dad's tiny construction company he'd gotten his GED, learned to drive, reunited with his sister and her family, and had begun remodeling a vacant business on the rich side of town into a Cambodian restaurant. He invited us to their grand opening on lunar new year, and I'll never forget when he gave me a red envelope with five dollars in it and told me, "tonight I am the luckiest man in the world, so this will bring you luck, too."
Years later, my dad told me that Jack had witnessed his parents' murder during the khmer rouge, and was immediately separated from his sister. He had to cross the killing fields at Choeung Ek alone, on foot, eating grass and insects to survive. He somehow made it to Cam Ranh on the coast of Vietnam, where a distant friend of his father's put him on a boat to Seattle. Jack was nine years old.
I tell this story because, even though I haven't seen Jack or any of his relatives in thirty years, I pray he's well and happy and eating like a king tonight with everyone he loves, celebrating the long overdue demise of the pestilential sonofabitch who tried to wipe them out.
Fuck Henry Kissinger's pathetic ghost, and fuck all those who praise him. Fuck Imperialism. Fuck the genocidal war machine. Drink deep for the freedom of all souls tonight, my friends. And tomorrow, keep fighting.

Character Profile: Rose Wilson (Ravager)
By popular demand, the next member of the Lost Titans: Rose Wilson!
Tumblr media
Rose was introduced in Deathstroke the Terminator #15 in 1992. She is the daughter of Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke the Terminator, and at the risk of rehashing stuff everyone knows, I have to give you the basics on Slade, too.
Slade Wilson was a soldier (originally in Vietnam, though that's obviously been updated since) who was so good at soldiering that the army gave him a super soldier serum that made him faster and stronger than any normal human. After leaving the military, he became an assassin - unbeknownst to his wife, Adeline, and their young sons Grant and Joey. When Slade's secret assassin-ing and ego caused Joey's throat to be slit, rendering him mute for life, Adeline left him.
The Wilson family first crossed paths with the New Teen Titans years later when Grant became the supervillain Ravager. When Grant's own janky powers got him killed, Slade decided this was the Titans' fault somehow and vowed revenge. This involved sleeping with a fifteen-year-old girl for some reason. Slade is a terrible person.
Meanwhile, Joey grew up to become the superhero Jericho, and became a long-standing member of the Titans. However, he got possessed by like a thousand ghosts at once, like you do, and went crazy and evil, and Slade had to kill him for his own good.
By this point, Slade had become such a popular character that he'd shifted from villain to antihero. (Never mind all the attempted child murder and statutory rape.) It was in this context, fresh after Joey's death, that Rose was introduced.
Rose is the daughter of a woman named Lillian Worth, a.k.a. Sweet Lili, a Cambodian woman who Slade once helped escape from the Khmer Rouge. Lili set up a high-end brothel in the States, and she and Slade became essentially fuckbuddies (this was after Slade's divorce), which eventually led to Rose. Lili didn't tell Slade about Rose because of his...everything, and Rose had a happy childhood, growing up with the other sex workers' kids in the brothel.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Slade's enemies eventually came for Rose. Specifically, Slade's evil, shitty half-brother Wade LaFarge. (If you're thinking "Wait...Slade Wilson has a brother named Wade?" then yes, Deadpool was in fact Rob Liefeld shamelessly ripping off Deathstroke. Liefeld's collaborate Fabian Nicieza named him Wade to acknowledge this, and joked that he was Slade's brother. So Marv Wolfman gave Slade an actual brother named Wade, who sucks so bad and who nobody likes. I don't think Marv was happy about Deadpool.)
Anyway, Wade became the fourth Ravager (don't worry about the second or third, they don't matter) and kidnapped Rose. Slade...basically decided not to try to rescue her because he was busy, leaving the job to Lili and his best friend Wintergreen. Rose, who had been trained in martial arts by her mother, managed to partially escape on her own...at which point Lili showed up and tried to kill Wade by hitting him with her car...and driving them both off a cliff. This is usually described as Wade killing Lili, which...okay. (She died, but he secretly survived, because of course he did.)
Slade refused to take any responsibility for Rose, afraid of putting her in even more danger, so this extremely traumatized tween was placed in the care of the Titans, who at this point were led by Roy Harper. She was still a civilian at this point, although she did spar with the team, and she also showed she was not to be fucked with when women and children were in danger:
Tumblr media
This is when Rose's powers first manifested: she has precognitive abilities, which originally involved lengthy visions of the distant future but quickly became flashes of what is about to happen, which makes her particularly good in a fight because she can predict what her opponent will do.
Also! During this period she became friends with Grant and also developed a brief but adorable crush on Kyle Rayner, while Bart Allen developed a brief but adorable crush on her. Babies!
She later shows up in the 1999 Titans series, considerably older (I'm assuming she's at least 18 here), when Roy hires her to be Lian's nanny, a job she takes very seriously:
Tumblr media
But then the 1999 series was canceled. Then the 2003 Teen Titans series began, and very quickly it was revealed that Joey Wilson was alive, that he had been possessing his father, and that that was the reason for Slade's turn as an antihero, not any actual desire on Slade's part to be good. A newly freed Slade decides he wants a do-over with one of his kids.
Meanwhile, Rose has been placed with a foster family, because I guess she's somehow underage again? But said family is then murdered by Wade LaFarge - remember him? - who then kidnaps Rose. Who is rescued by Slade:
Tumblr media
Rose, at Slade's encouragement, kills Wade and becomes the new Ravager. It's later revealed (to the reader, not to Rose) that Slade anonymously hired Wade to kill Rose's family because he wanted exactly this setup: for Rose to become completely emotionally dependent on and devoted to him.
Rose spends the next few years by her father's side, attacking the Titans and saying "Yes, daddy" in a sexy baby voice a lot. It's...tiresome. She's so determined to prove her loyalty that she even stabs her own left eye out, because we're in the mid-2000s now and it's peak edgelord time, baby! It's later explained that she's behaving like this because Slade drugged her with the same super soldier serum that gave him his powers (???), so Rose is now also extra strong, fast, etc.
Slade blackmails Dick (in his "villain" era) into briefly training Rose, and I have to include this panel because it kills me every time:
Tumblr media
She's trying to be mean and scary but she loves the Harpers so much. I'm cry.
Anyway, Slade has only involved Dick as part of a convoluted plot to kill Superman by putting kryptonite in Rose's empty eye socket (sure), and when Dick reveals that kryptonite causes cancer in humans and that Slade knew that perfectly well and just didn't give a shit about Rose, Rose decides to go back to the side of good and join the Teen Titans properly.
It...does not go smoothly. Cassie hates and distrusts Rose and makes that very clear, and Rose responds by being as obnoxious and antisocial as possible, constantly accusing the other Titans of not trusting her, and basically causing problems on purpose. Like slipping naked into Tim's bed to surprise him problems:
Tumblr media
I want to be clear that the writing here is absolutely abysmal. Johns and later writers (and artists) were trying to make Rose sexy sexy jailbait and also going for some kind of reductive Madonna/whore dichotomy with her and Cassie, and it's all very sexist and boring. But if you look past the, uh, actual comics, I do think that a lot of Rose's characterization here makes sense. She's a very traumatized teenager who expects people to dislike her, so she ensures that they dislike her to maintain control of the situation. She sees sex very much as something transactional and rooted in power exchange - which makes a lot of sense, since she was raised in a brothel! Plus she likes starting shit for fun. The comics are bad, but the idea of Rose is so, so good.
Another thing that is good in concept but shitty in execution: Rose/Eddie. As I mentioned in my Eddie profile, Eddie is utterly smitten with Rose pretty much immediately and he is both not at all subtle about it but also not at all a Nice Guy - his feelings are his to deal with and he never puts them on her to manage for him. Rose, for her part, doesn't seem to know how to handle just...a sweet boy who adores her, and so she alternates between flirting with him, being extremely mean to him, and being fiercely protective of him.
Tumblr media
That last comes into play when Eddie is abducted by a villain team called (sigh) the Terror Titans. Rose fights her way through a gauntlet of them to rescue him, which is SO DAMN ROMANTIC even if the comic looks like shit. But she's so ruthless about it that Cassie and Tim discuss kicking her off the team, which she overhears - so she defects to the Terror Titans. Her plan is to go in undercover and take them down, but during the storyline she starts to wonder if maybe this isn't where she belongs after all.
Rose. Honey. Baby girl. The Terror Titans are led by the fucking Clock King, a loser in clock glasses who likes to sleep with teenage girls and is making other teenage superheroes fight each other to death in a ring. No, this is not where you belong.
(During this period Rose also becomes addicted to huffing adrenalin. I truly do not know how I made it through the late 2000s, y'all. The comics were abysmal.)
Somewhere in there Joey Wilson comes back as a hero, and he and Rose quickly bond, which is as touching as it is heartbreaking. But Joey is still deeply unwell, and despite Rose's best efforts, he goes villain again, and she has to help the Titans take him down. After butting heads with Cassie again, Rose decides to leave the Titans, again. She tries to convince a depowered Eddie to come with her, but he declines. She then stars in her own backup feature where she travels to a remote Canadian village and saves a bunch of women and children from trafficking; while she's gone, Eddie is killed. Rose then returns to the Teen Titans for the fifth time and remains on the team until Flashpoint.
New 52 Rose is...honestly I'm not even going to try to explain her, because most of it is just incomprehensible nonsense. She shows up as a supporting character (with two eyes) in Superboy and The Ravagers, but it really feels like Lobdell just used the character name (and a worse design, which is saying something) for an OC. She's basically hired muscle for an evil lab, and there's no mention of Deathstroke for ages.
Eventually over in Deathstroke's book, it's revealed that Rose's mother is Adeline in this universe, not Lili, which means that Rose has been completely whitewashed. Of course most art of her has always depicted her as white, but this erased any possibility of her being biracial. The Wilson family's New 52 adventures culminate in Slade killing both Grant and Joey by sticking a sword through their heads (?) while Rose watches in horror, which is so awful as to be actively hilarious.
Also the New 52 is of course where we got the first hint of a Jason/Rose relationship, when she appears in Red Hood and the Outlaws as his ex. This has nothing to do with any of her other completely contradictory appearances during this era. The New 52 was a goddamn mess.
Rebirth erased all of that mishegas, thankfully. Rose is once again Lili's daughter, and Lili is specified to be Hmong, meaning Rose is too. In a change from the pre-Flashpoint continuity, Rose was conceived while Slade and Addie were still married, meaning Slade was cheating on Addie with Lili. In fact, Slade was out of town saving Rose's life when Joey's throat was slit, so Addie viscerally hates Rose even though obviously none of that was Rose's fault. Despite this, Rose and Joey are quite close and love each other fiercely, which is nice, even if the astonishing toxicity of the Wilson family means they can't really do anything in a healthy or functional way, including love.
Here's an example of what I mean: during this period, Rose became possessed by an ancient Vietnamese warrior princess who occasionally took over her body. During one of those times, she killed Joey's fiancee (who was also sleeping with Slade) (and who Joey was cheating on with Slade's friend, a man at least twice his age). Joey forgave her. So that's...nice? I guess?
Tumblr media
Both of you need so much therapy and also to go no contact with your father.
As of Infinite Frontier, Rose's original history seems to be pretty much intact, except that she has two eyes. (Her missing eye was restored by the New 52, although she was wearing an eyepatch in Death Metal. Maybe just for fun?)
She next appeared in Robin, hanging out on Lazarus Island with Damian, partially to keep an eye on him but mostly because she was trying to figure out what the deal was with one of the other competitors in the assassin tournament, a kid named Respawn. Eventually Respawn was revealed to be a clone of Talia and Slade, so basically Rose's younger half brother. Rose tried to take him under her wing, but she made the mistake of introducing him to Slade, who was like "Yes! A third chance to have a son and not fuck it all up entirely!" Rose was like "Hey maybe don't hang out with Slade" and Respawn was like "No this seems fine" and then Respawn was almost instantly murdered. So. That was a bummer.
Tumblr media
Should've listened, Grant 2.0.
These days, Rose is a member of the clandestine team Stormwatch for some reason, and is appearing with them in Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
Rose is one of those characters who is a fan favorite of gross dudes and so a lot of the writing (and art, oh god the art) around her has been truly abysmal. But she's so popular that every so often she's in something really solid, and even when the comics are bad, she somehow shines as a really fascinating, heartbreaking, lovable character. Maybe someday we'll get a really good Ravager and Jericho miniseries, that would be nice. In the meantime, there's always twelve thousand shitty issues of Teen Titans!

In Dili, Indonesia’s future means trying to forget about Timor-Leste’s past
Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto, a former military officer, has been linked to alleged atrocities in Timor-Leste.
At Timor-Leste’s museum of memory, Hugo Fernandes supervises exhibits chronicling resistance and oppression during the Indonesian occupation – an era when Prabowo Subianto, now Indonesia’s president-elect, is alleged to have overseen atrocities.
Fernandes runs the Centro Nacional Chega! museum, a former prison in the capital Dili that dates to when Timor-Leste was a Portuguese colony. Faded photographs of Timorese resistance fighters and messages scrawled on the walls by prisoners who languished here during Indonesia’s brutal 24-year rule line its galleries.
Despite the shadows cast by history, the impending ascent to power of Prabowo, a former army special forces commander who was declared the winner of the Feb. 14 Indonesian general election, has been greeted with diplomatic decorum in this tiny young nation of 1.3 million people also known as East Timor.
“Prabowo’s specific actions remain unclear due to limited information,” Fernandes, the museum’s director, told BenarNews. “Accusations of human rights violations have persisted, but concrete evidence and verification are difficult to obtain.”
“Chega!,” which means “enough! in Portuguese, stands as a testament to Timor-Leste’s efforts to navigate the delicate path between preserving the memories of its dark past and promoting reconciliation with its giant neighbor next-door.
“There are differing voices within the nation,” Fernandes says. “Some activists advocate for answers regarding past atrocities, while others emphasize the importance of moving forward with Indonesia.”
In 1999, East Timor voted overwhelmingly to break away from Indonesian rule, through a United Nations-sponsored referendum. Before and after the vote, pro-Jakarta militias engaged in widespread violence and destruction. East Timor gained formal independence in 2002 after a period of U.N. administration.
The occupation, which followed after Indonesia invaded East Timor in December 1975, was marked by famine and conflict. The number of deaths attributed to that era ranges from from 90,000 to 200,000, the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor reported.
This figure includes nearly 20,000 cases of violent deaths or disappearances. The commission’s findings indicate that Indonesian forces were responsible for about 70% of these violent incidents, set against the backdrop of East Timor’s population of around 900,000 in 1999.
And according to the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University, “up to a fifth of the East Timorese population perished during the Indonesia’s 24-year occupation … a similar proportion to the Cambodians who died under the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot (1975-1979).”
Since 1999, the relationship between Timor-Leste and Indonesia has evolved, with Jakarta acknowledging its former province as a “close brother” and supporting Dili’s bid to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta welcomed Prabowo’s election win and expressed readiness to collaborate with Indonesia’s upcoming new leader.
“Very pleased, very pleased,” Ramos-Horta told BenarNews when asked about Prabowo’s victory.
As a young man, Ramos-Horta, now 74, was a founder and leader of Fretilin, the armed resistance movement that fought to liberate East Timor from the Portuguese first and then the Indonesians.
He said he had personally called Prabowo, now Indonesia’s defense minister, to congratulate him, and that the ex-general planned to visit Timor-Leste before his inauguration on Oct. 20.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, a former guerilla leader who spent years in an Indonesian prison, was also happy with the news, Ramos-Horta said.
“President-elect Prabowo will contribute a lot, first to Indonesia, continuing stability and prosperity in Indonesia, and then in the region, as well as strengthen relations with Timor-Leste,” he said, adding Prabowo had “many friends” in his country, including his own brother, Arsenio.
When asked about Prabowo’s human rights record in Timor-Leste, Ramos-Horta said, “That is past. It’s already almost three decades, and we do not think of the past.”
Prabowo was a key figure in the military operations that crushed the East Timorese resistance.
The Timor-Leste National Alliance for an International Tribunal (ANTI), a coalition of civil society organizations, survivors, and families of victims, said reports had implicated Prabowo in a 1983 massacre in Kraras.
Some estimates said that  200 people were killed there, earning the area the nickname the “town of widows.”
In a statement released in November, the alliance said that as the head of the Indonesian army’s special forces command, Prabowo had directed actions resulting in severe human rights abuses and crimes, including the establishment of pro-Indonesian militias blamed for post-referendum violence in 1999.
In addition, Prabowo is linked to a 1991 massacre at the Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili, where some 250 peaceful demonstrators were killed, the alliance said.
In 1998, Prabowo was discharged from the military after a council of honor officers found him guilty of several violations, including involvement in the abduction and disappearance of pro-democracy activists during the 1998 student protests that led to the downfall of Indonesian dictator Suharto.
Prabowo, 72, has denied any wrongdoing and said he was only following orders from his superiors. He has never been tried in a civilian court for the alleged crimes.
Prabowo’s presidential campaign team said that witnesses, including religious figures in Timor-Leste, had denied his connection to the Krakas killings.
For many Timorese, the memories of Indonesian occupation are hard to erase.
Naldo Rei, 50, a former child guerrilla-fighter who was repeatedly imprisoned during that period, said he could not overlook Prabowo’s human rights record.
“While I don’t want to meddle in Indonesia’s internal matters, when it comes to human rights issues, Prabowo has a very distressing track record,” Rei told BenarNews, his soft-spoken and gentle demeanor belying his resistance years.
Rei spent his youth evading capture in the Los Palos jungle after the loss of six family members, including his father, to Indonesian military action.
In the early 1990s, he sought refuge first in Jakarta, then in Australia, before settling in an independent East Timor.
Rei, who is the author of “Resistance,” a memoir detailing his experiences, voices apprehension about the trajectory of Indonesian democracy.
“Prabowo’s victory, from my perspective, squanders the democracy that the people have fought for,” he said. “How many lives have been lost? He and other generals have blood on their hands.”
Januario Soares, a second-year medical student at the National University of Timor Lorosae, represents a growing sentiment focused on the future.
“Indonesia has chosen its leader. We need to focus on the future,” Soares said as he sat in the shade of a mahogany tree outside his campus in Dili.
He believes strengthening relations between the two countries is vital.
“The civil war left us divided, and in that division, we inadvertently opened our doors to Indonesia,” Soares said. “What followed was a period of violence against our people, a scar in our history.”
Yet, when it comes to Prabowo’s role in that history, Soares admitted he did not know much.
“The Indonesian people have made their choice. Perhaps Prabowo is the best among the contestants; that’s why they chose him,” he said.
Soares said he opted for a pragmatic approach toward the past, focusing on improving the quality of life and seeking benefits for the present and future.
“People change over time, and I believe Prabowo has changed too.”
Damien Kingsbury, a political expert specializing in Timor-Leste, said Timorese leaders were obligated to maintain a delicate diplomatic stance due to the small nation’s reliance on Indonesia for imports and its aspirations to join ASEAN, the Southeast Asian bloc. Indonesia is one of ASEAN’s founding members.
“Of course, Ramos-Horta must be diplomatic,” said Kingsbury, a professor at Deakin University in Australia, who has written extensively on Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
“He is president of a small country that has an unhappy history with Indonesia and does not want to create any possible problems,” he told BenarNews.
Kingsbury pointed out that while Ramos-Horta, a Nobel laureate and prominent diplomat, is well-versed in the language of diplomacy, there is a generational gap in awareness of the nation’s tumultuous past.
“Younger people may not be aware of events of 20, 30 and 40 years ago, but that does not mean they did not happen,” he said.
“It must leave a bitter taste in the mouths of many that Timor-Leste’s leaders need to be polite to Prabowo.”

Watch "Kissinger at 100: New War Crimes Revealed in Secret Cambodia Bombing That Set Stage for Forever Wars" on YouTube
youtube
Democracy Now! on Henry Kissinger's war crimes in Cambodia. Not that one good piece on an easy target like Kissinger makes up for years of unquestioning loyalty to the Democrats' Russiagate narratives, but it's a good piece nonetheless.
Kissinger's war crimes and non-stop attacks on Cambodian civilians helped the rise Pol Pot who used the attacks against civilians to elevate his rise to power under the guise of Marxism Leninism. Though in reality, little that Pol Pot advocated for had any resemblance to Socialism or Marxism Leninism.
Pol Pot would enjoy secret assistance from the US and China, each for their own reasons but largely to hobble growing Vietnamese independence, going on to slaughter some 2 million of his own Cambodian citizens, ruling instead like a Fascist dictator rather than a Revolutionary Working Class figure.
But what galvanized Pol Pot's support, what ultimately saw millions of Cambodians join his quest for power, was the very real, non-stop intentional slaughter of civilians on the border with Vietnam by the United States. The slaughter of Cambodians living in small rural villages who often didn't even have a basic frame of reference for what was happening to them. The barely understood aircraft and here these US military aircraft would fly into their villages and decimate them, killing most villagers and destroying all the buildings and infrastructure they could lay waste to.
This slaughter was a direct result of Henry Kissinger and Nixon's policy to destroy "anything that flies, anything that moves". In other words, a civilian genocide, no different than those ordered by Hitler.
The orders were clear: the US Military divisions in the area adjacent to the Cambodian border were given carte blanche to freely cross into Cambodian territory and bomb out of existence any human activity within measurable range. The complete and wonton slaughter of civilians was approved by Nixon and directed by Kissinger. There is no other word for this but genocide.
Of those who lived through this senseless destruction, they have vivid memory of the sound of US choppers before they'd enter their rural villages and lay waste to anything that moved. The trauma of those days etched into their very souls as they witnessed the deaths of so many of their friends, neighbors and families. They are still haunted to this day by those events that Kissinger so callously approved.
Yet here we are, decades have gone by and Kissinger is fat, happy and healthy in his mansion on his 100th birthday. Never even an ICC investigation launched let alone war crimes prosecuted.
Yet the ICC has the audacity to issue a warrant for the active head of state of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin for imaginary crime of "kidnapping" Ukrainian children to somehow propagandize them against their own people before sending them back to sow the seeds of Ukraine's destruction? Muahahahaha!
An elaborate scheme that would take years at best and affect a small portion of the Eastern Ukrainian population which already consider themselves to be ethnic Russians, and many do in fact want to be a part of the Russian Federation. So yeah, the whole ridiculous thing is just absurd, and really makes just no sense.
The reality is far more mundane and uninteresting, though it's far more positive for the children involved than it is a sinister propaganda effort. Remember, these same people who always claim the Russians are supposedly performing these elaborate propaganda schemes designed to trap unsuspecting wayward westerners and turn them against their government, they're also waging an information war and having far more success in that effort than anything the Russians are doing. Huge majorities of Westerners still support Ukraine, believe this entire episode has been uninstigated, no Nazis in Ukraine, and Vladimir Putin somehow controls the internet.
Instead, as it turns out, these centers for children who live on or near the frontlines of the SMO zone are designed to help these children temporarily escape the ravages of war and spend time with other children their own age doing activities that children enjoy like music, the arts, and survivalist classes. Not only is this completely mundane and uninteresting, it's really actually a pretty positive program. I don't know about you, but getting these children as far away from the frontlines as possible, even if only temporarily, can only be a good thing for these students who are often displaced, have lost family members, a home, or an apartment. Sometimes they don't have a home to go back to, and anything seems better than shelters and refugee camps, especially if they get to enjoy activities, learn new skills, do some schooling, or learn and develop their skills with a musical instrument.
Most of these camps run anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and the children are promptly returned to their parents who've all given their permissions for their children to go, hoping to keep them safe and happy during these hard times.
Even if these children were receiving some kind of Russian propaganda at some point during these trips, and there's absolutely zero evidence for that, how would that negate the positivity of getting them away from the frontlines and keeping them safe and happy?
And how exactly do you justify this ICC Warrant when Kissinger is celebrating his 100th birthday free, happy, healthy, and rich beyond most workers' imaginations? When will Kissinger be indicted by the ICC?
Of course the answer is obvious: it will NEVER happen because the ICC is NOT an international body of Justice, it is in fact no more than a tool of Western Imperialism and operates as such.
It isn't designed to safeguard any kind of Principles of Justice or anything like that, it only exists to pursue the enemies of Western Imperialism and leave its victims incapable of operating outside their home countries or face prosecutions and incarceration. Effectively making it impossible for the victim to organize internationally. So if you have a charismatic Leftist leader in your country, and he crosses the US or one of the European powers, say by Nationalizing the oil & gas industry; if they choose to use the ICC against you, you no longer have the freedom to conduct your country's business in the international arena, handicapping your diplomacy, trade negotiations and banking system interactions, since you're also likely being sanctioned at that point.
And so the ICC is simply another tool of Western Imperialism. Kissinger will never face consequences for his war crimes but his victims will remember their lost loved ones for the rest of their lives and they will pass along those memories to their grandchildren.

I know we usually give you thots but I had a softer thot. I don't know your ethnicity (I'm Filipina) but I'm making myself soft thinking about Namor and/or Attuma wanting to learn more about your Asian background.
With Namor, he can speak several languages. He wants to learn more of yours so he can communicate with you. He's a bit more traditional in wanting to learn the customs and traditions, but he'd also ask you if there are certain ones that are still practiced today or not as much (example: a common Filipino one would be "blessing" an elder. A younger person would hold the hand of an elder and press it to their forehead. In Tagalog it's "mano po" and in my parent's language, Kapampangan, it's "siklod po.")
With Attuma, I can see him going more domestic where he'd learn to cook your favorite food. Especially if you get homesick or have certain cravings, he tries to recreate your favorite childhood recipes. or find ways to get your favorite snacks. My favorite Asian childhood snack would be Hello Panda 🙈 I love the new flavors, but vanilla was my favorite.
I know this is random but it's often rare to see an Asian love interest (especially Southeast Asian love interest in my personal experience) so I just wanted to put this out there. I don't celebrate Lunar New Year and idk if i told you this before (idk if you celebrate it) but happy belated Lunar New Year!
I’m Cambodian/Vietnamese/Chinese 🤣 happy Lunar New year! I’m celebrating both the year of the rabbit and the year of the cat 🥰
I think learning culture from your partner is a way to get to know them better. Each SE Asian custom and traditions are all different, and so I do like this headcanon.
For me, I think Attuma would enjoy learning Kun Khmer, or traditional Cambodian fighting style. I think him would enjoy learning about bokator since he has such long, thick legs 🤣 also I hope he likes spicy food, because Cambodian food is as spicy as their women 😌
Namor would totally be enamored by the carving on our ancient temples and ruins. I think we would take special interest and learn about the style.

hi there & happy new year! can you please suggest some fcs like Chloe Zhao, Isabel Sandoval, Hong Chau? I'm particularly drawn to them because a) they have personality b) characteristics (which I also have) like Chloe's wide nose, Hong's thin eyes, the non-pale-as-a-sheet skin they all have—qualities that I feel are sometimes erased/downplayed with makeup, photoshop, or surgery due to media issues/racism/colorism. not to be too soppy about it but i find their beauty affirming. thank you <3

Day Twenty-Seven: Bonus
It’s late. I have packing to do, and I really need to get to bed. But since tomorrow is the last day of the trip, I feel I ought to start doing some “wrapping up.” I’ll save the larger philosophical issues for tomorrow. But here are a few random (and very minor) things I learned over the last four weeks.
As is common in Eastern countries, religious sites and many homes and businesses in Southeast Asia will have a raised threshold that you have to step over before entering. Almost always, you have to remove your shoes before doing so. A set of racks is helpfully placed nearby. If you ask someone why there's a raised threshold, these are among the answers you will receive:
1. To keep water out during heavy rainstorms.
2. To keep small animals out.
3. To keep evil spirits out.
4. To keep crawling babies in. (This reason is usually only given at private homes.)
5. Because, in order to step over the threshold, you have to look down. You are thus bowing and giving the place you are entering a sign of respect.
In most cases, I was given two of these reasons, typically one of them “practical” and the other one “spiritual.” But they were rarely the same two reasons as I moved from place to place. People tend to mix and match their explanations according to their personal beliefs or local custom and then to generalize those explanations.
Also, it is generally protocol to step over the raised threshold, not on it. Once, however, I was surprised to see one of my guides step directly on the threshold. I was (I must admit) a bit shocked, and I said, “I thought you weren’t supposed to do that."
He looked at me with some surprise and replied, “Meh. Old superstition. No one believes that anymore.”
I suppose I should've known this, but I also learned that Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are considered Indochina, but Thailand isn’t. That division both makes sense, and it doesn’t. It doesn’t make sense because the borders of all four countries have been highly fluid throughout history. Territory that was part of one country for a certain number of years often became part of another country later. And just keeping track of all those shifts can be an intimidating task.
But it makes some sense, too. There’s a different “feel” when you move from Indochina to Thailand. One rather obvious shift: Because of French influence, people drive on the right in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Because of British influence, they drive on the left in Thailand. It's a small change, but it's noticeable.
In addition, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos have had a major and lasting influence of the Communist Party. They’ve gotten rid of their kings, and they seem quite happy about that. Thailand still has its king, and the Thais seem pretty happy about that, too. Suum cuique.
As a result, Thailand was an ally of the US when the US was waging war in Indochina. That war has left deep scars in those countries, particularly in Vietnam and Laos. If the impact of what the French and Americans did in this region seems less of a daily presence in Cambodia, it’s only because (as the Cambodians will freely tell you) they did worse things to themselves … and they will tell you this with that haunting Cambodian smile. There are similarities but also important differences among the peoples of this region.
It has been a somewhat unreal experience “vacationing” in cities and regions with names that, when I was growing up, were daily mentioned on the news as war zones. Hanoi. Da Nang. Cambodia. Laos.
It was unreal but also, in a strange way, affirming. If those places that were once so associated with bombing and death are now places where we can go for culture and relaxation, who’s to say that other spots that today are associated with bombing and death may not also one day be places where future generations go on package tours “to get away from it all”?
Maybe someday someone will be writing a diary about a leisurely month they spent in Ukraine or Gaza and commenting on things so seemingly trivial as which side of the road people drive on.
We can only hope.

Week 3 Blog Post - Grant Montoya
Five Easy Pieces is a film directed by Bob Rafelson and released in the year 1970. Although it played a more obscure role in the era's many "New Hollywood" movies, it certainly contributed to the movement. It offered audiences a challenge in dissecting these dysfunctional characters in the everchanging Western society.
youtube
In this interview, the director tells us how scenes of this movie have certain ties with his real-life events, but one detail stuck out:
"I felt that the character that I was trying to write the movie about should be about a man who was condemned to search for the meaning of his life- and not a very happy search at that." - Bob Rafelson
Worldwide, Five Easy Pieces made $18,099,091 at the box office with its budget being $1,600,000. Four Oscar nominations and a bountiful profit make this movie a complete success.
According to Variety Magazine, "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) as well as "Easy Rider" (1969) were the films of this era that allowed Rafelson to execute the laid-back style of "Five Easy Pieces", while the casting director Fred Roos needed this film as a dry run in order to produce the masterpieces that would be “Godfather I & II,” (“II” co-produced by Roos) and “Apocalypse Now” (Roos co-produced).
Roger Ebert, with a perfect rating of the film, said this:
"Five Easy Pieces" has the complexity, the nuance, the depth, of the best fiction. In involves us in these people, this time and place, and we care for them, even though they don't request our affection or applause. We remember Bobby and Rayette, because they are so completely themselves, so stuck, so needy, so brave in their loneliness." - Roger Ebert, 4/4
While I agree that the characters felt as if they weren't being played by anyone offscreen and their genuine nature was cool to see, there was still a dryness to the movie that make it undeserving of a rewatch. I resonate with the feelings of this RateYourMusic critic much more:
"Yes, it was made well and yes, it's an intelligent and artistically sound feature, but ultimately its subject--Bobby Duprea--is empty, so the film ends up feeling empty as well. Do we latch on to Bobby's obvious talent and smarts, or do we turn away from his heartless and cruel nature?" - atomicWedgie, 4/5
Bobby is motivated by fleeting temptations, knowing nothing more than to meet his current desires and hurt everyone he knows. this is a piece that puts this character into any perspective the audience desires, but in the end, we learn nothing new or significant.
To quote this source: "When President Richard Nixon ordered U.S. ground troops to invade Cambodia on April 28, 1970, he waited two days to announce on national television the Cambodian incursion had begun. With resentment already building in the country over the conflict in Vietnam, the incursion felt like a final straw."
What soon followed was the Kent State Massacre in late spring, riots on Wall Street, and economic stagflation. The unsure environment at the time- economically & politically- might have affected the temperaments of middle-class Americans (the most affected group.) Our character Bobby carries his grief openly, yet he never gives any indication of why he feels so tormented. Maybe it reflects the way that the middle class in the seventies was expected to suffer in silence.
The style of the movie is definitely on the more alienating side. Most interactions are through the character Bobby, whether that means the more exciting scenes where it's him chewing out his fiancé for trivial matters, or telling the waitress to "hold the chicken" between her knees. There are more baffling moments than humorous ones and more confusing actions than sensible ones. He treats his partner horribly because she is imprudent, annoying, and bubbly in the worst way possible- but he can't seem to get rid of her. There is almost always a feeling of pity and despair for Bobby, but never empathy. The way the film progresses is very unorthodox until Bobby and Reyette arrive at his parent's home, where some pieces start connecting.
Every intervention or attempt from Bobby to do anything feels aimless because there is no aim. Side characters make their appearances and leave while giving nothing of use to our character's journey to self-realization, and the ending leaves nothing as well, just ambiguity. Jack Nicholson was a star before this, and I believe this was Karen Black's debut feature. When weighing the unconventional features with the conventional ones, they are just about even.
Quote 1
Bobby: [finally talking with his paralyzed father]  "I don't know if you'd be particularly interested in hearing anything about me. My life, I mean... Most of it doesn't add up to much that I could relate as a way of life that you'd approve of."
This scene is near the end of the movie. During it, his father cannot speak and it feels more like a one-sided confessional. Robert had the opportunity to be a great pianist, but for whatever reason it didn't satisfy him and he feels like he failed his family. Perhaps this is a moment of meditation for the viewing audience, who can relate to the disillusionment in opportunity- to the even more painful judgment from family.
Quote 2
Rayette: "You love me, Bobby?"
Bobby: "What do you think?" [they kiss]
There's nothing special about this quote but it does show the relationship Bobby has with Rayette. Bobby does what most manipulative men do but in a more brutal manner. Bobby being so upfront about his feelings towards his partner makes the male viewers the most uncomfortable because this truth that real men have- these urges to be controlling- is being projected constantly and perhaps makes men feel more self-aware.
Image 1 - 5 minutes before the credits roll, Bobby and Rayette stop at a gas station on the way back home. Bobby enters the bathroom, stares at himself for a couple minutes, hops in the lumber truck, and begins a new random journey to Alaska. The dreariness of this still is one that stuck out to me, it is one that portrays hopelessness.
Tumblr media
Image 2 - One of the more exciting parts of the film where Bobby hops out of his car and acts manically before boarding a truck holding a piano (pictured left) and starts playing it, letting the truck carry him away into a city.

Is there a person you talk to everyday with?: Yeah. My mom the most, but my dad as well. I talk to my brother most days, except for the few days a week he stays over at his boyfriend’s house.
Does one of your parents ever complain to you about the other parent?: Yes.

THE HISTORY OF PRA KRING
Pra Kring is a small figurine of Buddha in Mara Vichai Gesture (Subduing Mara, also known as Calling the Earth to witness) with lotus petals at the base in the front, the right hand of Buddha is on his knee, and his left hand is holding a pot of elixir of immortality or a peach (peach is regarded the fruit of immortality). The style of Pra Kring is similar to Pra Paisatchayaguru (Buddha of Medicine Bhaiṣajyaguru), and it is believed that Pra Kring is Bhaiṣajyaguru of Mahayana Buddhism. Bhaiṣajyaguru is also known as Healing Buddha, Master of Healing, Supreme Physician, and King of Medicines. The figurine of Pra Kring will be put in the water for making holy water for healing sickness, warding off evil spirits, easing the suffering, Klawklad Plodpai (bringing safety, and pushes you away from all danger), and Metta Maha Niyom (easily gaining loving, mercy, caring, kindness, and compassion from all people around you), and Maha Larp (bringing Lucky Wealth / wealth fetching). In the reign of King Rama V of Bangkok (King Chulalongkorn) between CE 1868 to CE 1910, the Pra Kring Pawaret was used for making Holy Water on his Birthday Anniversary Ceremonies.
The oldest Pra Kring figurines were made in Tibet and China, they are called “Pra Kring Tibet” and “Pra Kring Nong Sare” in Thai. And the second to the oldest Pra Kring figurines were discovered Cambodia dated as of Angkor period, they were called “Pra Kring Ubageng”, “Pra Kring Panombageng”, and “Pra Kring Pra Patoom Suriyawong”. The Cambodian style Pra Kring Patoom Suriyawong was popular in the reign of King Jayavarman VII (reigned CE 1181 to CE 1218), this type of Pra Kring was made to replace the figurine of Buddha of Medicine Bhaiṣajyaguru which was firstly made in Cambodia since King Jayavarman I (reigned CE 657 to CE 681). The making of Pra Kring figurines in Thailand was influenced by Cambodia, and it believed that Pra Kring figurines in Thailand was firstly made as early as in the Kingdom of Sukhothai (CE 1238 – CE 1438).
In Thailand, the Pra Kring figurine is traditionally stuffed with a small metal ball inside to make noise after it is shaken. The ringing the Pra Kring is to perform while praying a sermon. The material used for casting Pra Kring figurines in Thailand is called “Nawaloha”, an alloy, a combination of 9 kinds of metals which are iron, mercury, gold, silver, copper, pluang (antimony ore), zinc, chin (silver lead alloy), and borisuth (pure copper ore). There are different sizes of Pra Kring figurines, and the portable tiny Pra Kring figurine is called “Pra Chaiyawat”.
As for Thais, Pra Kring is a Buddha figurine that makes noise after being shaken. And in Mahayana Buddhism, it is believed that Pra Kring would help bring 12 kinds of success to the owner. And Thais (Theravada Buddhism) believe that Pra Kring helps bring good health, longevity, cure for all diseases with wealth & prosperity.
