Mary statue to return from Hindu group to NY parish

After a former parish church was sold to be renovated into a Hindu temple, the Diocese of Rochester says a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary given to the buyers will be returned.

The Hindu group which bought the property in January had planned to display the statue of Mary, which it said was a gift from the Catholic Church, next to an icon of the Hindu goddess of death..

But the diocese said Thursday the gift will now be returned.

“The Bhakti Marga Hindu movement, new owners of the former Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Elmira, NY, are returning the statues previously on display in Our Lady of Lourdes Church to the Parish of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in gratitude for the good relationship between the two faiths,” Katey Bourne of the Rochester diocese told The Pillar March 24.

The announcement came after The Pillar reported Wednesday that a former parish church, Our Lady of Lourdes, was sold to a Hindu group intending to convert it into a Hindu temple. The former church, closed for worship in November 2021, was sold in January to the Bhakti Marga Hindu movement by Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Elmira — the parish into which Our Lady of Lourdes was merged in 2017.

Days after its January purchase of the former church building, Bhakti Marga announced plans to turn the property into an ashram, or spiritual hermitage, and to turn the former church itself into a Hindu temple.

“We’re going to honor the past by keeping the stained glass windows, and I am so happy to say that the Catholic Church has let us keep the main Mother Mary,” Bhakti Marga’s Swami Tulsidas announced in a January YouTube video.

The swami said that a large parish statue of Our Lady of Lourdes would be removed from the former church sanctuary, where it had stood above the altar, and “placed with Kali in the residence way,” the former convent for religious sisters on the property. Kali is the Hindu goddess of death.

According to Tulsidas, the Hindu temple will be inaugurated when completed by guru Swami Vishwananda, Bhakti Marga’s leader.

Vishwananda, founder of Bhakti Marga movement, has faced allegations of sexual misconduct in Germany, and is a controversial figure in some Hindu traditions.

That statute will now be returned to Holy Name of Jesus Parish. And the diocese emphasized Thursday that the parish did not have diocesan approval to give away the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“No consultation was made with the diocese to leave the statue of Mary in the church; this decision was made by the parish. The concern this raises is understandable, as well as the upset and confusion it may cause former parishioners,” Bourne said.

But while the statue has been returned, Bourne said she is looking into questions from The Pillar about the process through which the church was sold to a group intending to convert it to a Hindu temple.

When a church building can no longer be used, canon law permits it to be relegated to “profane” - secular - “but not sordid use.”

Diocesan bishops are charged with reviewing how a former church building will be used by its new owners before it is sold. So are two groups which must consent to the sale — the diocesan finance council, and a group of senior priests called the diocesan college of consultors.

Profane use of a former church building might include renovating it into a museum, restaurant, or residences. Sordid use is generally understood to mean sacrilegious, immoral, or scandalous purpose.

In discussing that notion, the Pontifical Council for Culture in 2018 emphasized “the need to avoid situations that can give offence to the religious sentiment of a Christian people.”

In 2013, the Vatican’s Congregation for Clergy emphasized that “under no circumstances can [a closed church] be alienated for use inconsistent with its dignity as a former church.”

Preferable to “sordid use,” the congregation emphasized, would be “demolition of the edifice.”

The Rochester diocese has not yet indicated whether Bishop Salvatore Matano, the diocesan finance council, or the diocesan college of consultors considered whether renovation into a Hindu temple might be an “inconsistent” use of the former church building.

Hindu temple in closed N.Y. church raises questions

A parish in the Diocese of Rochester sold a closed Catholic church this January to the Bhakti Marga Hindu movement, to be renovated into the first U.S. temple of the Hindu group.

After renovation, the church will be used for Hindu worship, and will include iconography of Hindu deities and other Hindu religious symbols alongside the Catholic religious symbols already in the building. The group will also display a parish statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary alongside a Hindu goddess on the property.

The conversion of a Catholic church into a space for Hindu worship raises questions about the canonical relegation of the church to “profane,” or non-Catholic, use, and about its sale to a non-Catholic religious organization.

The Diocese of Rochester, New York, announced Nov. 6, 2021, that Our Lady of Lourdes Church in nearby Elmira would be relegated to profane use, a technical term in canon law, effective Nov. 15.

“Once a church is relegated it is no longer used for Catholic liturgies and can be put up for sale. We will remove all sacred objects as well as other items that may be useful in carrying out the mission of the parish,” the diocese said in its announcement.

Bhakti Marga purchased Our Lady of Lourdes in January. Days after the purchase, the group announced plans to turn the property, which includes the church building and a convent, into an ashram, or spiritual hermitage.

The church itself will become a Hindu temple, Bhakti Marga explained.

“This ashram is, or was, a church dedicated to Mother Mary of Lourdes, and it was a convent for some nuns. So it’s beautiful that we will be able to build on the spirituality, and the love, and the grace that was already there,” Bhakti Marga’s Swami Tulsidas announced in a January YouTube video.

Tulsidas explained that the space will feature a tall icon of Narasimha, a man-lion avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, in what was once the church’s sanctuary, along with icons of other Hindu religious figures.

“We’re going to honor the past by keeping the stained glass windows, and I am so happy to say that the Catholic Church has let us keep the main Mother Mary,” Tulsidas added.

A large statue of Our Lady of Lourdes will be “placed with Kali in the residence way,” the former convent for religious sisters on the property, the swami said.

Kali is the Hindu goddess of death.

The worship space will also hold more than 1,000 saligrams, which in are stones worshiped in Hinduism because they are believed to contain a manifestation of the god Vishnu.

Our Lady of Lourdes was a parish church until 2018, when three parishes in Elmira were merged into one, amid declining Mass attendance and revenues. But while the parishes were merged operationally into Holy Name of Jesus Parish, both the Our Lady of Lourdes and nearby Sts. Peter and Paul churches remained open as parish worship sites until their relegation to secular use in November 2021.

The renovation raises questions about the diocesan decision to sell the church to a non-Catholic religious group, and about the canonical process observed during its closure.

Canon law permits a diocesan bishop to relegate a church to “profane, but not sordid use” if it can no longer be used for sacred worship, is regarded as beyond repair, or if “other grave causes suggest [it] can no longer be used for divine worship.”

In order to close a parish church, the bishop must consult with his diocesan presbyteral council, and obtain the consent of the parish pastor.

Rochester Bishop Salvatore Matano said in his November announcement that he consulted Rochester’s presbyteral council Nov. 3, 2021, about the church closure.

But it is not clear whether Matano indicated to the presbyteral council that the building could be converted into a space for non-Christian worship which could be regarded as “sordid use” in canon law.

Profane use of a church building generally means it can be sold for a secular purpose: renovation into apartments, a restaurant, or retail space. But canon law prohibits a church to be sold or leased for “sordid” use, which is understood to mean sacrilegious, immoral, or scandalous purpose.

Canon law requires that the potential future use of a church building be considered when it is sold. Dioceses which closed a significant number of churches in recent years have developed vetting processes to ensure that a church building won’t be repurposed for offensive use after it is sold.

It is also not clear why the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be displayed alongside the goddess Kali was not removed from the church at the time other blessed and sacred objects were.

According to Tulsidas, the temple will be inaugurated when completed by guru Swami Vishwananda, Bhakti Marga’s leader.

Vishwananda, founder of Bhakti Marga movement, has faced allegations of sexual misconduct in Germany, and is a controversial figure in some Hindu traditions.

The Bhakti Marga movement, which claims to have 30 temples worldwide, regards Vishwananda as “the source of infinite grace.”

“He answers prayers and removes internal obstacles to a person’s spiritual progress,” according to the movement.

The Rochester diocese has not yet responded to The Pillar’s request for comment.

twenty-three: act my age

In case you don’t know me or you’re new here, this is my birthday tradition to post a reflection on my past year, along with a birthday playlist, since 2016. Here's the link to this year's birthday playlist, too: https://sptfy.com/2023actmyage. Hope you like it!

Now that I’m 23, I’ve realized how coming of age is easy but acting like it is the hardest part. Throughout my life, I sometimes never really felt like I acted my age—either I was too old or too young. This essay is a collection of twenty-three years of introspection from the outside looking in and a reflection on where I want to go in the future.

Going back to where it all began, around my nuclear family, the firstborn usually gets to teach the parents how to become one. Growing up, it's always a case of being the responsible and better person. To add insult to injury, being a son of church pastors isn’t necessarily easy either. You’re sometimes subject to other people’s expectations of holiness and goodness and even more from your parents preaching on it. Isn’t it that we’re just all the same too–falling short of perfection from God?

Things change quite differently when I'm with my extended family from my mother's side: I'm at the other end of the spectrum this time. Being the son of the youngest child, I'm also one of the youngest of the bunch. This meant that I had to look up a lot of times to my ates and kuyas and this felt quite nice for a very long time. It’s quite true when they say, “When you are young, they assume you know nothing.” There were no expectations and you’re always taken care of, but it wasn’t the case until I decided to be the family's overachiever.

Then back at elementary and high school, getting ahead of the curve sometimes requires you to fit in. This time, I'm also the youngest of the class, and finding someone you're older than (or the same age with) is much harder than a needle in a haystack. I sometimes wonder whether this shift had me acting well beyond my age: that I thought I was older than I thought and that I had to act like them to fit the status quo. Suddenly, Club Penguin and Poptropica were child’s play when they became pivotal to my middle school life. One of my favorite (short-lived) phases of my life was college. I think that was the only time I found myself slightly acting my age—but not quite, though. Classmates of the same age became common and everyone was in the same blurry space of adulthood and youth altogether. Then again, you're at the national university, so what you once thought was the top of the world was just someone else's footing. Fun and happy it might have seemed, you were just an anchovy in an ocean full of whales.

It’s also one of the things I’ve learned growing up: getting older feels scary and overwhelming every time. Things start to change, you begin to question your place in this world, and you even lose the glimmer you have all this time. Taylor talks about this in her 2021 Seth Meyers interview on “Nothing New”. She says, “[They] have their breakthrough moment, and then, the moment after that is really hard for them because they’re just not getting the same [acclaim].”

One of those big changes came to me early this year: I got a job. Currently at one of the country's largest developers, aligning your behavior with your age seemed a bit harder than I expected. As a recent graduate, I thought people were more lenient to someone starting out their careers. Turns out, when you're just another cog in the system, people tend to forget your place in this world—that sometimes I feel like I’m a 29-year-old worker who's supposed to know the ins and outs of real estate after 5 years of experience. It was the most grueling time of my life in the last 9 months at work, but I guess that’s another story for me to tell.

Oh, it’s interesting that the world's also a bit harsher for people in their 20s. "Acting your age" suddenly becomes ambiguous too: some friends are off traveling the world setting to find their own selves, some getting married and settling down with families, some getting their licenses and post-graduates, and you’re still here. You question not only your place in the world as a lost 20-something trying-to-be-an-adult person, but what standards societies have placed on responsibility and adulthood altogether. Is adulthood even a social construct?

But who cares? I’ve long imprisoned myself towards other people’s expectations of me and put myself in roles they wanted of me, but this time I’m going to live by my own expectations and from people who mean the world to me. For me, being twenty-three means being free—especially from other people’s expectations—like the seagulls flying over the ocean. I won’t promise that I’ll “act my age”, but I promise to be the best version of myself regardless of what age I might be. This means being more mindful of myself and of everything and everywhere from now on. Simply put, I promise to put an extra worth on myself, seize the days to come, and be grateful for everything and everyone. As told by my hero, “I think it's important that you know that I will never change. But I'll never stay the same either.”

Thanks for coming along with me and now we’re onto the next. I’m so excited for whatever lies ahead, and I really wouldn’t be here if not for all of you. 🙂

The coming of Mother Mary - otherwise known as Our Lady - was foretold to humanity by Almighty God. In Genesis 3:15, God told satan "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it will crush your head, and you will bruise His Heel." So God already planned to sent an immaculately conceived human woman to our race. He would ask her if she would consent to be the Mother of His only begotten Son. If she agreed, the Messiah - Jesus Christ of Divine Father and born of human mother - would crush satan's rule on earth. Likewise, satan would only hurt the Savior, not bring about His annihilation.

We see that Jesus indeed died by crucifixion as a result of historical events which were overshadowed by satan's hour of darkness. Yet Jesus - Who had been borne by holy Mary - was not destined to remain dead. On the third day after His crucifixion, Jesus arose again - alive forevermore. Furthermore, Christ has promised that all of good will shall rise again to eternal joy in heaven.

PROPHECIES

The prophets foretold that the promise of God regarding the coming of Mary to world history would be fulfilled. The book of Isaiah tells us that God promised Ahaz a sign that the Davidic dynasty would continue despite the threats of invading armies: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son and shall call His Name Emmanuel" (Is 7:13-14).

APPARITIONS

Holy Mary is honored as the Mother of the Son of God, the King of Heaven. Chapter 12 in the Book of Revelation shows that Mary wears the Queen Mother crown in Heaven.

Satan's time on earth is limited: this being knows that his nemesis is a little Nazarene lady who bore the Son of God. During our time on earth let us follow the example God set for us and honor the holy woman He chose as Mother of His Son.
