Homegoing
I have been reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and have been enjoying the book so far. I’ll be posting more quotes that I’ve annotated from Part 1. I’m so excited to see where the stories go from here. I bought this book over Memorial Day weekend and did some research on books to teach for Women’s/Ethnic Literature next school year. I’ll be teaching a section of Women’s Lit and a few sections of Ethnic Lit along with 2 sections of English 9.
Prior to the end of the school year, I haven’t been reading as much as I would like. My Goodread’s goal this year is to read 25 books but I have only read 3 Comics. I am trying to do most of my reading this summer since I have more time. I’m in the middle of reading a bunch of books right now: Afakasi Woman by Lena Wendt Young, Words No Bars Can Hold: Literacy Learning in Prison by Deborah Appleman, Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades. Yeah, I know, that’s a lot of books to be reading at once. I see myself finishing up Homegoing by the end of next week if I keep up my reading pace.
Yay for summer reading!

The rallying cry from the Grue Crew is, “Chad is back!” For his return episode, the crew picks an 80s movie that surely everyone has seen. Well, everyone but Jeff. The film is HOUSE, released in 1985… or is it 1986? Covered seven years ago by Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, and Thomas Mariani in episode 105, the current crew decided to revisit this comedy-horror feature. Starring some 80s TV icons – William Katt (The Greatest American Hero, 1981-1983), George Wendt (Cheers, 1982-1993), Richard Moll (Night Court, 1984-1992) – the cast, crew, and effects give them plenty to talk about and there’s plenty of taglines for Chad’s return. Welcome back, brother!
At the time of this writing, House is available to stream from Tubi, PlutoTV, and Amazon Prime, as well as multiple PPV sources, and on physical media as a Blu-ray from Arrow Video.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film chosen by Chad, will be Spookies (1985), a film whose making-of story might be more interesting than the movie itself.
Check out this episode!

Half-year wrap-up and 1 Year Anniversary!
I posted the first review for my YA World Challenge reading project on June 24 last year, so I just realized it's my 1 year anniversary!
So far I have finished 40 countries/regions! Including 2 trilogies and 1 duology that makes 45 books, at a rate of almost 4 per month. I'm pretty happy with that progress! I finished 20 books in 2023 so far.
I'm also happy that I'm still enjoying this project. Sticking to genres I like has helped, and I'm amazed by the diversity of new YA releases coming out lately, which has made it easy to pick up new books (thanks, Netgalley!!)
