HP Rants: Things Fandom Gets WRONG
Remus Lupin’s Scars
Or more accurately, his lack of them
Alright kiddos I got a salty HP take and y’all are not gonna like it.
It is basically universal in any fandom depiction of Remus Lupin, whether in fic or art, that he has extensive facial scarring. this is another one of the movies-making-people-think-things-are-canon-that-really-aren’t-canon. the movies are shit. the movies lie. also.
it’s not physically possible.
y’all really never seen the anatomy of a wolf or even a dog?? they? can’t? physically? scratch? their? faces? unless? they? sit? down? on? their? bums? and? twist? around? all? awkwardly? to? use? their? hind? leg? but? even if that was what a rabid werewolf would do… that position/angle would in no way generate enough force to create actual cuts.
and like. most importantly, if Remus was covered in scars, don’t you think harry would have, i don’t know, mentioned/noticed/referred to it at least once??? kid’s visually observant (look I’m not talking emotionally, my man can be fucking clueless, but he paid attention to visual details) he always noticed people’s physical features and appearances. and the only visual/physical attributes ever associated with Lupin were ‘prematurely lined/aged face,’ and ‘[prematurely] graying hair’ ‘shabby’ [‘had an air of shabbiness about him’] he was often ‘worn’/‘wan’ ‘drawn’ [‘thin face’] and ‘tired’ or ‘pale’ and ‘ill-looking’ but never, not. one. singe. time. was he ever noted as having any scars.
NOT A SINGLE FUCKING TIME.
and harry notices those kinds of things. read any book 7 description of Bill. read any description ever of Moody. if remus had scars that could be seen, harry would have said so.
also, if he was so extensively scarred as fanon just looves to make him be, by the time we meet him in canon, he would have been through over 28 years worth of transformations (a very minimum of 336, with the 144 most recent being without the marauders to keep him from hurting himself as a wolf). and most likely he didn’t have ready access to the Wolf’s Bane potion as he was not actually able to brew it for himself—which he fucking said flat out. so. yeah. he would have been even more scarred than mad-eye moody if the whole transformations ==> facial scars thing was true.
This is the actual canon description of Remus John Lupin.
“The stranger was wearing an extremely shabby set of Wizard’s robes that had been darned in several places. He looked I’ll and exhausted.Though quite young, his light brown hair was flecked with grey.” “Professor Lupin’s pallid profile” “illuminated his tired grey face but his eyes looked alert and wary”
also. let’s be real here. werewolf bites are cursed wounds (which is why the scarring from them does not heal). you know what’s not cursed wounds? werewolf scratches. so it is not physically fucking possible for Remus to have cursed werewolf bite wounds on his face. because you cannot bite your own fucking face. and magic easily and seamlessly heals normal cuts and scratches and non cursed wounds. without scarring. so sure, even if he scratched his face with his werewolfy claws, they’re not cursed wounds, so they would have been magically healed as such. same goes for any other injuries he got as a wolf. any broken bones, or scratches not from his claws. they all would have been magically healed and wouldn’t leave any scars.
and i just honestly don’t think that a werewolfs cursed bite mark wounds would be cursed on itself. like. it’s already a werewolf. it’s not gonna become any more werewolf. i don’t know. i just don’t think that any wounds from a werewolf biting itself would scar. it just doesn’t really make sense. plus again, we return to canon.
remus has no visible scars.
sure maybe. maybe. he is absolutely covered in scars on the parts of his body that aren’t covered by clothing or robes. but definitely not his hands or forearms. because canonically there is no mention of him having scars, and harry has seen his hands and forearms (when he just casually rolled up his sleeves so he could murder his former best friend, as one does nbd).
actually you know what. scratch all that. there is canonical evidence. WEREWOLVES ARE ONLY DANGEROUS TO HUMANS. once he became a werewolf, remus was no longer a human. so. any bites or wounds he gave himself while he was transformed were just normal non-cursed wounds. that could be fixed by magic and wouldn’t leave scars. so yeah. there’s my proof.
TLDR: my take is that remus has bad scars from his initial bite from greyback, but doesn’t have any scars from his own werewolf ass biting himself

we don’t talk about cedric and harry’s solidarity in the goblet of fire enough.
this is not intended as a ship post, take it how you want. post is meant to analyze the bond/connection at GOF brought cedric and harry. somewhat long post.
first task: dragons.
hagrid showed harry the dragons he may have been fighting. illegally. madame maxine and karkaroff do the same, but this leaves cedric in the dark about the task.
you’d think that since cedric and harry are from the same school and are competing head to head for hogwarts, they might be a little more against each other. but no. harry cheats a second time to help cedric
second task: merpeople
at this point, all four champions are at risk because of cheating and the shitty point system. and yet, cedric cheats yet again to help harry
AND THEN they help each other when they’re actually underwater. Cedric warns harry about vicktor and harry expresses that he wanted to help cho
third task: maze
harry saved cedric from cursed viktor
cedric offers to give up the throphy for everything harry has done for him
they decide to be a team, like they always were, and get the damn thropy together
post tournament:
cedric died for harry. not particularly by choice, but based on how he acts in the book, he would’ve done it with a fight.
cedric comes back as a ghost during the duel. he helps harry, reminds him to keep going. and his only dying wish was for his body to be brought back to his father.

Harry potter fans listen up
Ok. So, Harry was a horcrux himself. And as we know, horcruxes are destroyed by venom of the basilisk. In the chamber of secrets, Harry got wounded and poisoned by the basilisk when he ran the sword through the basilisks' head. So why/ how did the horcrux in Harry survive???? Why didn't the horcrux in him immediately take action like the other horcruxes when they were destroyed by the basilisk venom? Is it because the phoenix cured him? If so, does that mean the horcruxes can be recreated by phoenix tears? I need answers. Or theories.
Please reblog and comment so that we may find answers

So I started a hp fanfic again and it's Tom Riddle-centric. At one point, he said something about the muggle world having instant long distance communication already - I assumed he was talking about email cause he used the phrase 'transfer of messages'.
But then I realized that Tom Riddle in his 20s is during the 1950s. Did email even exist back then? The answer is no. The first email was sent in the late 1960s and became widespread during the 1980s, if my research (quick Google search) is to be believed. People at the time only had landlines for communication so it's not like the Wizarding world was that behind, as they have the floo call network that works about the same.
Then, I thought if they weren't that late in that respect, are they also at about the same stage in other areas? So I started searching about quills and pens - one of the things people point out when talking about how old fashioned the Wizarding world is. According to this link,
The quills became metal tipped around the 19th century and the pens that we're used to, like the fountain pens and the ballpoint pens, only started to appear in the early 20th century. So, the Wizarding world is only late at most a century, and even then, it could be that they didn't want to transition at first because of all the quill based spells they have.
We don't really know how spells are created. For all we know, it's based on some really complicated math and star alignments. Changing the parts of a spell, like to make the quill spells work for pens, could also require a bunch of maths and complicated stuff. They have the dictaquills and spells like that to help them write conveniently still, so do they really need to change to a more convenient tool to write in, if it requires all that effort?
The late 1900s is when technology really started to advance. And fast. It must've been a massive whiplash to them so they were a little slow in the uptake.
So it's not really fair to say they reject all advancements of technology just because it doesn't mesh well with their magic, it could be that it takes a long time and a lot of effort and waiting to research a magic friendly alternative that does the same thing. Astronomy is one of their mandatory classes after all, what if doing some things in magic requires the alignment of these specific astrology objects or something?
Of course, they do still go around in robes, but maybe it's comfy? It must be so free down there.

just remembered a fic on AO3 (or more likely LJ because it had that distinct late 00's experimental vibe) that appeared double-spaced oddly, in that some paragraphs would be spaced normally and others would have double or even triple spaces in between. it was about one half of the otp getting over the other's death (or coma, can't remember which), so all the comments were about how poignant the use of visual spacing was as a means to convey all the emotional holes in the character's life.
and then the author replied like... *giggle* guys it's NOT double spaced. try selecting the whole text
and we were all like "no WAY"
but we selected the text, and yes!!!
the "holes" in the story? they were actually lines and actions from the dead/coma character's ghost, rendered invisible to the eye by the simple trick of coloring the text the exact same as the background, revealed by nothing more than a click and a drag of the mouse
a story about the profound loneliness of losing your the partner of your life and having to make do without them, without anything to fill the holes they'd left behind, suddenly became a story about the profound helplessness of seeing someone you love suffer from your absence while you are right there, unable to do anything about it, unable to communicate that you love them enough to suffer unseen and unheard with them, just to keep them company they'll never know about
it was then that I truly realized how *superior* the digital medium is to plain printed paper, how the medium and the format can add to a story.
I think about that fic about once a year. I wish I could find it again
EDIT: FOUND IT!!!! UPDATE HERE

Deadass one of the most underratedly hilarious things in Harry Potter is Hagrid explaining the absolute nonsensical garbage ass wizard currency system and saying “17 Sickles in a Galleon, and 29 Knuts to a Sickle. Simple enough”.
Like my dude. My guy. My very large friend. There is nothing and I mean nothing whatsoever that’s simple about that. That financial system makes actual negative sense
It’s fucking worse than how the numeric system in the French language. That’s 493 Knut’s in a galleon. That’s some real bullshit right there

"There's no Hogwarts without you, Hagrid."

Officially thrombing with pain
The beautiful character of Hagrid and I shared birthdays, and I couldn't be more ecstatic about it. For the first time, I feel a deep personal loss💔
Hagrid won't seem Hagrid without Robbie Coltrane, but as he said, "I'll not be here sadly, but Hagrid will."
