Loved your post about Peeta "Send It" Mellark about him being buried in the hole for days. I've seen the interpretation that Peeta saying "Oh, I don't care if you see me" is canon that Peeta  has (or at least believes he has) a huge cock, i.e., I got nothing to be ashamed of, Katniss please look at what I can offer you. I think this interpretation is also where a lot of fics got that he is very big, in girth and length. I'm curious where you come down on this. Do you think this line alludes to canonically saying he's hung like a horse? If not, do you headcanon that he's large? Basically talk to me about Peeta's cock lol. Peeta was on deaths door but he was going to go out with a bang AND die trying. Y'all the streaming of the three hours hunger games in the books is so goddamn similar to our movies. In the book, Katniss, Peeta and Ceasar watch the three hours version of the hunger games in an interview and Katniss says that it's the first time the Capitol is showing a different version of the hunger games... A love story. The Capitol audience ooh and ah at them curling up together. Even Haymitch only sends them food when they act romantic. In the movies, it's the exact same thing, we made teams ffs! Team Gale or Team Peeta, take your pick! So many people forgot about the actual brutality of the games and for years, the first thing they asked hunger games fans was who they would pick for Katniss' love interest.

We saw them kissing in the arena and forgot they were in a cave, fighting infections and starving, all the while hiding from a person that wants to kill them both.

I love Suzzane Collins for this!!!

I really love CF and the Suzanne's idea of Quarter Qell, but I would sell my soul, if she wrote one book more, before this one, where Katniss and Peeta would be mentors and we could see not only how their relationship develops (which I would love to see), but also how they would enter into an alliance with Joanna and Finnick and other mentors and victors. And of course Haymitch and Effie taking care of them at every step. This would be fantastic.

what makes Snow such a formidable villain within THG universe is that nothing he does was set in stone. there was no sense of inevitability about his actions and his brutality. Snow had enough perspective of poverty, capital cruelty, district hunger and not to mention his own arena experience’ and yet he actively chose at every moment to stray from natural goodness. its even more terrifying in the sense that he had the ability to care. Snow is not a mindless sociopath, he displays feelings to others such as sejanus, lucy grey and tigris but ultimately he will always choose himself. his ability to betray those he cared about in order yo advance himself makes him so much more than the stereotypical villain who is forced into his actions.

suzanne collins is such a genius... the cultural phenomenon of her series leading to the hanging tree house remixes, mockingjay being milked for two (bad) movies, the capitol-inspired makeup palettes, the halloween costumes, the explosion of the market for dystopia, the butchering of her characters and removal of disabilities, disfiguration, and racial tension + representation to sell more tickets, the extra gale scenes to fuel discourse, and the audience showing up to cinemas to watch what was pretty honestly marketed to them (the jacob vs edwardification of the symbolic love story and also to watch children fight to the death) it's just so ridiculously ironic i would say you can't write this shit, but she did write about it... in The Hunger Games published 2008

i think something that elevates the hunger games franchise is not just the quality of writing but the integrity of it. tbosas isn’t just a cash-grab by suzanne collins in the age of sequels and reboots (though i won’t pretend that didn’t play a part), it’s a character study of the main antagonist with a different structure than the main trilogy. and importantly, it doesn’t just re-hash the same old themes and beats the main trilogy had, it expands on not just the world of the hunger games but the themes as well, it actually has something new to say about the trilogy’s themes about class, capitalism, power, and control, in a way that couldn’t be explored with the main story because the protagonist of that story simply did not have access to the world that’s being explored in tbosas.

i understand the people who call for books/movies to be made about haymitch, finnick, johanna, different years of the games — we love those characters and want to see more of them! i’d kill for a novella on finnick’s days mentoring tributes, or katniss’s parents falling in love. but at the end of the day we probably wouldn’t be very satisfied with those stories being fleshed out if they had absolutely nothing new to say about the world, they’d be enjoyable, but not as interesting and engaging as tbosas has been.

I love that every victor from District 12 won by breaking the rules.

Katniss was proficient with a bow and in a forest because she went past the fence and hunted game illegally; Peeta survived because Katniss threatened for the games to not have a victor after the promised rule (presumably influenced by Haymitch?) if he wasn’t saved; Haymitch won because he used the capitol forcefield against his opponent, bringing their weapon into his game; Lucy won because of rat poison brought into the arena and Snow feeding her scent to the snakes.

There was not a victor from twelve that didn’t backhand the Capitol with their survival. lmao.

i need more people to comprehend the tragic life haymitch had

like

-reaped into the 2nd quarter quell along with twice the amount of tributes and half the chance of winning

-refuses to participate in the games and hides at the border, ends up getting pulled back in watches his only ally die. he tried to avoid playing the capitols game but ends up winning it. through a trick.

-since the capitol doesn't like how he won everyone important to him is killed, he is 16 alone in the victors village

-a year later we can assume he's sent to mentor the next set of 12 tributes and that goes poorly. he is 17 trying to teach children how not get slaughtered but they will.

-then the year after that. and the year after that. again and again

-at some point he turns to alcohol, because that's what twelve has to offer in terms of substances. and he's got the money to develop a habit, it certainly helps with the annual watch a bunch of kids die and maybe try help two of them not trip.

-his house is in pieces. dirty, smashed furniture from drunken nightmares, full of mess but empty really. it's just him there. we don't see him interact with people outside of other victors and effie. we can assume he's a regular at the hobb but he doesn't have people who care enough to check up on him.

-by the time it's Katniss and Peetas turn he's watched 46 District 12 tributes die. the other victors are the only consistent figures in his life that might understand what he's going through but they have other victors to go home with, tributes with a chance in the games.

his life is so utterly depressing but the way he manages to pull himself out of it enough to help Katniss because he realised she actually has a chance. The fact that 24 years later he managed to put effort in after so many tributes failed. and it worked. she won.

It's such an important part of her growth towards Peeta and no one talks about it!! The girl how has survived everything finally needs not just something, but SOMEONE. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was an excellent movie adaptation plot wise. It also solidified to me 2 reasons why Snow knew Katniss was such a threat beyond the basics and they were that

He recognized Haymitch as a mentor rewarding romantic behavior within the arena with sponsored gifts because a) it was his idea and b) before the drone system was perfected he saw how mentors themselves could technically follow rules while influencing the games and

He noticed how much sympathy and connection the Capitol citizens could form with the Tributes from all the nurses crying at Lucy Gray’s “last performance” to his entire class chanting to get her out of the arena which forced someone as influential as Dr. Gaul to listen

Snow’s not an idiot he knows Katniss herself held very little power at least at the beginning. But he instantly recognized how her story could be marketed and used to turn both District and Capitol citizens against him especially by people like Haymitch or Coin who knew what they were doing

Props to Suzanne Collins for having some throw away line in one of the first chapters of The Hunger Games about there only ever having been two victors from district 12 and then never mentioning who the one was besides Haymitch and then writing a book ten years later all about who that first victor was with leaving us with just enough doubt about her fate... now that is good writing
