Fire Control: Torpedoes, Part II
Tumblr media
"Gyroscopes allowed for torpedoes to be launched sideways off a vessel in nearly any direction at or below 90° to target. This meant that the only real requirement for a firing solution was determining where the torpedo would meet the path of the target. This, as in gunfire, requires deflection. To determine deflection, tubes were initially equipped with rudimentary director equipment mounted on the launchers like a gunsight. An operator would use a series of interlocking slide rules, very similar to a course solver (or Dumaresq) in gunnery, to set the sights. The primary inputs required for this "torpedo triangle" were line of sight to target, target course, and torpedo course. The "Deflection Triangle" replaced it during WWI, using line of sight, torpedo path, and perpendicular line across line of sight to link the two.
Once target data was known, typically acquired optically, torpedo speed had to be chosen; torpedoes had multiple speed settings. Faster speed meant less range, while slower speeds time to evade. Speed determined run time, the final measurement required to create a firing solution. The output was gyroscope angle, which dictated the torpedo course; this was applied by turning a lever or spindle protruding from the launcher. However, the run time required for the gyro to stabilize led to a "reach" period - which did not follow the trigonometry of the original firing solution, and made gyroscopic torpedoes unpopular at first.
Tube-mounted directors were local affairs, subject to the judgement of operators and reliant on verbal communications from the bridge. This was insufficient for complex tactical scenarios, so bridge-mounted directors were developed in the wake of WWI. These devices were essentially bearing transmitters combined with a computer on a pedestal with a telescopic sight, to be covered in the next post.
Here, the operator of a torpedo tube aboard an early British destroyer fires a torpedo using a triangle director and sight."

Thinking about all the direct parallels drawn between Giorno and Diavolo in PHF again.
Everyone in Passione thinking Giorno was just the boss the whole time, that the intense secrecy was because he was young. That nothing has changed enough to even know theres a new boss at all. Giorno gaining power in the same way Diavolo supposedly did. Giorno going after every last loose thread-- Fugo being given the choice to either prove his loyalty or get a bullet between the eyes right then in that stadium. The way the SPW foundation explicitly doesn't trust Giorno either.
Fascinating shit, thank you morally dubious Giorno writing ily morally dubious Giorno writing

National Tea Day
Just because we dumped all that tea in the harbor, doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the relaxing, warm drink. Visit a Fest-Tea-Val, or simply enjoy a steaming mug of tea.
That’s about the perfect sentiment we can think of for a nice cup of tea! Tea is a wonderful drink that comes in a wide variety of different flavors, each of them having a distinct personality and character. It has been used for everything from a simple morning libation to the central element of certain social and religious rituals.
This amazing drink is so important that taxing it was the final straw that ignited a fledgling country to declare a revolution! National Tea Day celebrates this fantastic beverage and the seemingly endless list of things it can do.
History of National Tea Day
The History of National Tea Day reaches far back into the world’s history but can be narrowed down to a place of origin that is surprisingly precise.
This place sits at the intersection of Latitude 29N and Longitude 98E, notable as the joining of NE India, Burma, China, and Tibet. Many mythological origins for tea also exist as well, some of them merely interesting and others quite gruesome.
In one period in China, the Emperor had ordered that all people of his nation would boil their water before drinking it. So it came to pass that the Emperor was sitting and drinking a simple cup of boiled water when leaves from a nearby tree blew into it, creating the first tea.
In another tale, a man sat meditating in front of a wall (for 9 whole years!) when he accidentally fell asleep. On waking, he was so disgusted with his inability to stay awake, which he considered to be a weakness, that he severed his eyelids and threw them to the ground where they sprouted into the first tea bushes. A little disturbing, perhaps, but utterly Asian in its style.
Regardless of its origins (which may be in dispute) the importance of tea cannot be understated. And anyone is strongly encouraged to research it since it would be impossible to cover it’s entire history here.
Now, it’s time to take a look at what tea is–and what it is not. Officially speaking tea is an infusion of the leaves of Camellia Sinensis, an unassuming evergreen plant that hails from Asia. Technically, what tea is not is anything that does not contain these leaves.
That means that, while infusions of herbs not containing these leaves may be referred to as ‘Herbal Teas’, they are not in fact teas at all. Only those infusions which contain the Camellia Sinensis leaves can properly be called tea. Considering tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, second only to water, it seems that a little accuracy is in order.
On the other hand, as words and traditions evolve, many things have become known as tea, which so many people around the world enjoy, that it doesn’t hurt to be a little generous with the definition. And generosity is what National Tea Day is all about. Drinking, and sharing, a generous cup of tea.
Because it spans a variety of sources and cultures, a couple of different dates have been recognized as National Tea Day. April 21 is National Tea Day in the UK. The UN has put National Tea Day a month later, and another National Tea Day falls in the middle of December. There are even days for Iced Tea, Bubble Tea and Chai. Not to mention a whole month for Earl Grey Tea and Iced Tea.
It seems that celebrating Tea is a festivity that should be happening all throughout the year! And since tea is the most consumed drink in the world (after water) no one is even going to complain.
How to Celebrate National Tea Day
Drink a Cup (or Glass or Mug) of Tea
Literally hundreds of varieties of tea are in existence, from those that are gently dried and cured to those that go through complex processes that can include long stays in caves. So many varieties of tea exist that it almost defies the imagination! National Tea Day is the perfect time to try a few new ones.
Grab a Glass of Iced Tea
In some countries, tea is only considered to be authentic if it is enjoyed hot. However, other cultures have taken the idea of tea and turned it into a cold beverage. For instance, in the United States, iced tea is a common beverage that is served in a large, tall glass. It is often sold by the gallon in stores and, in the south (but almost never in the north!), it is made very sweet.
Whatever the case, the first order of business for National Tea Day is sitting down to enjoy a sip in whatever form is preferred.
Attend the Fest-Tea-Val in UK
Celebrated all throughout the United Kingdom, Fest-Tea-Val (festival!) Tea rooms, hotels, cafes and pubs all around the nation host special events, promotions and activities that are centered around the country’s favorite drink: tea. These events are often paired with worthy charities in order to provide financial support for them.
Host a Fest-Tea-Val
Those outside of the UK certainly don’t need to be excluded from all of the fun! Consider hosting a National Tea Day celebration at home, at work, or in the community. Simply gather friends or coworkers together and put on a spread of different varieties of tea that can be tried. This would also be a great time to call that friend who has the eclectic collection of teapots!
Take the Sustainable Tea Challenge
Since most tea bags are made of plastic, which isn’t great for the earth, many people are moving in the direction of using loose leaf tea or at least compostable tea bags. Some companies try to promote sustainability and eco-friendliness in the production of their tea, including:
Numi. Fair-trade, organic, and offsetting carbon emissions.
Yogi. Organic, recyclable/compostable packaging and gives back.
Pukka. Organic and donates profits to help the planet.

Fire Control: Background
Tumblr media
"Only 41 years before WWII, at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba (shown), US and Spanish ships had brawled at close range using only the experienced eye of each individual gun layer. The original concept of gunnery at sea was based on direct fire - shooting what you can see directly from the gun using line of sight. This concept was the primary method of pointing a gun at a target for centuries. Guns were loaded, manually aimed by their crew, and fired by officer command - at least until the engagement became general. This basic status quo was why pre Dreadnoughts carried so many intermediate guns: the big guns were for sinking the enemy, but many more smaller guns were needed to demoralize and kill the opposing gunners while the slow heavy guns were reloaded (usually by rotating the turrets to a set position and lowering the guns between each shot!).
In this environment, the quick-firing gun proved its value at the Battles of the Yalu River and Santiago de Cuba in the 1890s; in both instances, heavy guns performed quite poorly, and each engagement was decided by the damage dealt from the "secondary" guns. To correct this imbalance, the international trend would move towards fleet concentration - keeping a fleet together to basically multiply the likelihood of its heaviest guns having an effect on the enemy and the introduction of heavier secondary guns to increase rate of fire. Thanks to technological progressions in loading mechanisms, turrets, and breech design, the rate of fire for large artillery quickly caught up, and the practical result was squeezing the maximum number of big guns onto a ship - the dreadnought. However, such a ship would be minimal value if all its guns could not be brought to bear on a single target in a controlled, centralized manner; fire control would be applied to solve this problem.
Fire control was itself born from advances in gunnery, and to some extent the introduction of the torpedo, that extended the practical distances at which ships would fight in the 1890s and into the 1900s. The result of increasing the range created a fundamental mathematical problem: how to hit a moving target not where it is, but where it will be. Solving this problem required complex math; to capture the data needed for these calculations, new and advanced instruments had to be introduced. This series, as voted on and chosen by this page's Patreon supporters, will serve as a basic introduction to that technology."

Went to the drugstore the other day for soup because I wasn’t feeling well. And on my way out I got stopped by the guy tabling for charity and he said don’t you want disabled kids to get to go to horseriding camp (and other services)... and like yeah, I do want disabled kids to get horseriding camp (and other services) and I guess I am willing to give some money for that so I was stood talking to him and he asked me about the birds. Did I see all these birds.
And I had to say yeah, that’s normal for this town, right here is where the birds come to sleep. I don’t know why. You can see them every day, as it begins to get dark, flying towards the intersection of the main road where the high school is and the highway. It is Entirely Normal for there to be Thousands of Black Birds at the Crossroads at Sundown. It is Normal for them to be Screaming.
And then, possibly, a bird touched something it should not have, or perhaps not. Maybe the electrons zigged when they should have zagged. But the transformer on the powerlines 20 feet from us exploded. The next one down the lines also exploded. Unexpected and bright and loud. I ducked and swore, profusely. The young man tabling for charity also ducked but did not swear, because as he had already explained to me the iPad he was holding was recording our interaction for quality and training purposes.
And then there were thousands of terrified black birds in a swirling changeable vortex above us, Double Screaming, and I had to tell the poor boy “This part isn’t actually very Normal”. And then I had to get on a call with the admin part of the charity to give verbal consent for them to charge my card so disabled kids could go to horse camp (and other services), and the poor guy tried, he tried so hard to explain before he passed me the phone that sorry, the entire world exploded a few seconds ago and we and thousands of black birds are still a little upset about it, and the electricity is still out for everything in the visible area, but I could tell the person at the desk at the other end didn’t really understand. They had no way of knowing what we had just seen.
