Love the tragic irony of peppino having used to keep his hair long ngl...... Btw do you think he used to have some different hobbies back then? :O
(good luck w that comm btw-)
I dont think its tragic! His hair STILL comes down to his shoulder; he just doesnt have any annoying hair in his face that would make him want to make a ponytail. I think when u start balding u either panic or make ur peace and i think he was too worried about Other Things to care about it lol
As for hobbies, he has a Couple that i thought were cute and fitting.
Despite the anxiety, he is a bit of an entertainer. He can do magic tricks! Not very flashy ones but he knows alot of card and sleight of hand tricks; it is fun to see people stare in disbelief, and its a good way to keep his hands busy. The Autism prevents him from withholding Magic Secrets; if anyone asks him how he did it he will be very happy to share it. It helps that tricks are STILL hard to perform, even if u have the Knowledge of how it works.
He doesnt consider himself an artist but he can do caricatures 😊 I am very attached to my hc that he drew the little storefront logo for his own shop. Partly bc it would be easy for him to draw; mostly bc he did not want to waste money to get someone ELSE to do it if he could just do it his damn self. You will not catch him drawing or sketching anymore, even post game when hes doing better overall. But like most things, u can press him into showing off a little bit if u say the right words.
I hesitate to call it a hobby, but he will go jogging almost Daily. Well. When he was younger he jogged daily but nowadays he will at the very least Walk daily. He does it really early in the morning before he opens up shop, or in the evening if the weather permits. He doesnt like the rigidness of ‘working out’ though, and will avoid it like the plague; he is a little baby (princess) and does not want to get achey muscles and he does Not want to sweat at all its the worst. Post game, he will have random peeps join him for walks. He does not ask for this but it is not the WORST thing in the world to have some company :)
#answered#chattin#peppino#i have a bunch of other ones but wehhh#this will be an essay#which is what im trying to avoid now hdjdbdksk#he can bake as well he is just very good w foods overall#but when he got older and more stressed it accidentally turned into him stressbaking#he used to give it away to neighbors (bc the thought of throwing out food makes him ILL)#but now he gives it to noisette and gus bc they are literally black holes#they will simply eat anything and everything#also i think he can play on a concertina but only bc like#his uncle or grandpa taught him when he was younger to like#Expand His Brain or some shit; u know- teach them when theyre young bc theyre so receptive to new things#and THIS is bc i think it would be cute if he made a tiny peshino prototype for like marketing reasons#and he based it off of him being Just Okay with the instrument#and the tinkering is bc i think him being a BROKE BITCH meant that he was unable to literally call for repairs around his shop (and home…)#so he just took it upon himself to learn how to do basic repair stuff#and like#keeping his hands busy#tinkering to make a little windup toy seemed to make sense from there bfjdndkdndk#hes got lots of very minor talents and skills but they add up to give u a man that has approximate knowledge of many things#and he keeps it all to himself bc hes a loner :)#OMG how did i almost forget; thank u; i am still lining this comm#its not even BAD i am just. uninspired#i like draw big dudes buff OR fat and i am drawing Some Guy#so ive been dragging my feet through the mud gettin it done#but on god im finishing this lines tonight

Hi! I've been really curious, besides the Light Music Club members, who are the characters who can play an instrument on canon timeline? Thank you for answering my question^^
Tumblr media
Mmm, I’m not sure what you mean by “canon timeline”?? If you mean the main story, there are few, if any, times where characters mention they play instruments (just because it isn’t relevant to what’s happening). Most instances appear in vignettes or event stories (which are considered “part of canon” but not always happening in the same timeline as the main story).
Off the top of my head, I recall:
The Light Music Club does play instruments as part of their activities! More specifically, Kalim is usually on drums, Cater plays guitar, and Lilia the electric bass.
Lilia is actually said to be able to play multiple instruments, including the bagpipes. We can see many instruments in the corner of his bedroom.
Kalim can also play the oud.
Malleus has a talent with string instruments (violin, cello, etc). However, this talent is limited to classical instruments and not electric ones. He once tried to play an electric guitar and almost killed poor Cater’s ears 😂
The Octatrio used to be in a band in middle school. Azul played piano, Floyd played drums, and Jade played the double bass (NOT the electric bass; those are two totally different instruments).
Jade plays a flute in the Harveston event. Epel shows that he can play a concertina (which is an accordion-like instrument).
Sebek and Idia try playing a violin in the same event. Idia doesn’t really try to play, he just does the motions and plays an actually competent player’s performance via his phone. Sebek sucks at the violin, but his lung capacity makes him good for playing woodwinds (though he lacks the skill for it). He refuses to keep playing on the flute because Malleus is not one for woodwinds.
Marja (Epel’s grandma) and Malleus can play the pipe organ; the latter does it during Endless Halloween Night.
Grim can make a racket on cymbals and the castanets!
Rook and Ruggie play the trumpet in Port Breeze Fest! Floyd demonstrates his skill with the saxophone. Jack also plays flute here. The event rhythmic/twistunes shows us the boys banging on various items like drums.
In White Rabbit Fest, Epel, Ortho, Deuce, and Silver attempt playing bugles but none of them are very good at it.

Okay but do talk to us about pianos in FR, I'm guessing they should not be there? Or just not that type?
Oh. Ohohohoh anon. Here we go. We're going to go on a journey into how my mind works, I'm sorry, you asked such a straightforward question but it's going to unravel something in me. I'm so sorry. I studied music as a youth, and I am an insufferable autist.
Tumblr media
So simply put, they COULD be there. Faerun isn't a parallel to earth, they can have anything they damn well want. But also, if they are there, why are other instruments... not?
The game is set in the late 1400s in Toril, and it does seem like a time of the very beginnings of industrialisation, of the cities going through bit populous changes. We see some evidence of this when we get to Baldur's Gate proper, after being in the countryside of the Frontiers for a while. We could argue that this is a time of enlightenment in Faerun. More people are becoming atheists, the return of Lantan has brought back some technology into the Sword Coast. It's easy to say that there are some progressions in how society runs at this point.
The first piano was made in the early 1700s by Bartolomeo Cristofori. Developed from the Harpsichord, which had been in use since the 1400s. A Harpsichord has a keyboard which, when pressed, plucks a string in a manner akin to other string instruments, like a violin with a finger. The piano strikes the string with a hammer, allowing for dynamic range (quiet to loud) which is new, and brings forward a whole new possibility for the instrumentalist.
The piano changed the fucking game when it came to music. by the 1800s every established household would have had a piano. But this is all known stuff.
What I don't get is where are the adjoining instruments? The things that led to pianos being in every musical home?
A bard has the option of a flute, drum, violin, lyre, or lute in BG3. Now a violin or drum, those would stay in play for years as a folk instrument and would likely not go out of circulation. But a flute is a really, really impractical instrument option for carrying across the field compared to, say, a clarinet. If that's where we are with the development of instruments. If we have pianos... we could probably be moving from lutes through to classical guitars, which bring another whole new melodic nature to burgeoning songwriting.
(In 5e standard I believe you get the above plus the shwam, bagpipes, dulcimer, horn, gong, shorthorn, longhorn, regular old horn and zulkoon, which I'll come back to in a moment)
Also if we have pianos, then we should see evidence of harpsichords in poorer households who can't afford these wonders yet. Pianos definitely still seem like a luxury item. We only see them prominently feature in Gale's home, the music shop, and the Jannath's estate. So elsewhere it would stand to reason that we would see spinets on people's tables, or smaller keyboarded instruments popping up elsewhere.
Also, if we are at the point of pianos being in people's homes... we've got to talk about concertinas and squeezeboxes starting to come into play too. Which would revolutionise the music played by bards. We have Zulkoons which are a bellows instrument which is kind of a bellows-pumped bagpipe, which is a drone instrument. But we've not even officially had hurdy-gurdy's yet (give the people what they want, wizards, we're sick of homebrewing them in.)
But imagine! Suddenly as a bard you have an instrument capable of polyphonic sound! That's going to completely revolutionise the game! To have something of the possibility of a concertina or a piano opens up so much more depth of sound in playing, and would take composition of music into a new era.
Then Gale, for fuck's sake, says he has a piano enchanted to play the Llurian Suites. SUITES? We're at a point in composition where we have suites? Are we at a time where somebody like Handel could be composing? Do we have the burgeoning artform of opera? It's all possible.
But where's my harpsichords?

My favorite the Scorpio Races scenes/moments that aren’t all Puck and Sean:
Tommy and Puck dancing in the living room while Gabe plays the concertina and Tommy teases her about Sean (everything about that chapter is perfect)
Holly following Sean around while he does his chores and saying he can feel god on the cliffs
Norman Falk telling Puck not to race because if she rides Dove then the races are just a horse race and Tommy’s death was for nothing (I could make an entire post about this actually, personally I think it’s one of the most important moments in the book)
Sean’s first scene in the butcher shop because it’s SUCH a good introduction to his character and the way his brain works
Holly and Puck’s first introduction and conversation outside Palsson’s. You get to see their impressions of each other when otherwise you mostly see both of them through Sean’s eyes (ok also I just love Holly. So many Holly scenes are good scenes)
Puck talking to Father Mooneyham at confession and starting to understand Gabe’s position (another pivotal moment in the book I could write a whole essay about)

reasons i think omitb s3 should have a musical episode:
it’s the Broadway season, like, c’mon. please.
they are perfectly primed for a cell block tango homage
meryl streep
there could be a huge cast musical number it would be perfect
the whole cast?? can sing??
like obviously selena can and steve and martin are super musical (banjo/concertina number??)
also!! ali stroker!! Tony award winning legend!!
detective williams should be in a musical number and resent every second of it
more yodel shop
we’ve gotten so many great musical references they are all theater kids
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA HOMAGES
like imagine the production being supposedly cursed
theo could do artistic sign language a la dwsa!! (james caverly has a musical theater background and has done stuff like that before and it’s such a cool medium that needs more recognition/acknowledgment)
could do cool stuff with the generational divide by playing into the different kinds of music people gravitate towards (mabel needs a power ballad okay??)
fits the vibe of their abstract interludes perfectly
everything should have a musical episode but this would fit so well okay??
so many good murder musicals to draw from
idk if paul rudd can sing but he probably can
its the Broadway season let me have this.

With all the really cool Peter Lorre inspired ocs I've been seeing lately I thought I'd draw some art of the closest thing I have to a Peter Lorre oc
Tumblr media
Meet Claude Gauthier(whos name I spelt wrong in the drawing cause I'm stupid and have period brain) he's my interpretation of the unnamed main character from 'The Horla', my favourite of Peter Lorres radio shows
Claudes parents encouraged him to study for a mathematically focused career, but he would have rather studied music. He has been singing and playing the violin since he was young and has taken up writing compositions and various other instruments as a hobby over the years, namely the piano, cello and more recently, the harp and concertina. He's fond of opera, especially French(of course) and German, but he has nostalgia for the hungarian folk music shared with him by his mother and grandmother and a more recent appreciation for American and Irish folk music
He works as an accountant and a tax consultant for a wealthy American, named Declan Fitzsimmons, who has a property and a small company near Paris, inherited from his maternal French family. He and Claude have also been having an affair for the last 12 years
Claude is close with his maid, Marie, who he acts as something of a father figure toward. Many people scoff at how Claude "coddles" his help, but with how difficult life can be for young working girls, Claude sees no harm in giving her some extra change to get a pastry when he sends her off for groceries or letting her sleep in an hour or two every once in a while

How to Play: Popeye
Tumblr media
Ok, so this is actually kinda straightforward. You're a multiclass barbarian/monk. More specifically, you're a Path of the Zealot Barbarian/Way of the Astral Self Monk.
At base, just being a barbarian/monk gives you some good Popeye-esque stuff. You don't "rage" you eat spinach. You get increased defense without armor (I ain't never seen Popeye wear armor, have you?), you get extra attacks, your punches do more damage than normal, you can punch missiles away, martial arts gives you multiple punches from level one, etc. If you have seven levels of Barbarian, Feral Instinct even lets you eat your spinach in an ambush.
Path of the Zealot
With Path of the Zealot, your path abilities all just feel right for Popeye. That first punch in a round is a killer, you can be raised from apparent death with no material componentsjust a can of spinach, when you've eaten your spinach, you can better resist poison/explosions/mental assault. Hell, even Zealous Presence can be fluffed as Popeye blowing a steam whistle from his pipe-
Tumblr media
And at 14th level, you're strong to the finich cuz you ates your spinach with Rage Beyond Death.
Way of the Astral Self
So then, why Way of the Astral Self?
Tumblr media
YOU CAN HAVE AN IN-GAME, MAGICAL EXPLANATION FOR GIANT POPEYE FOREARMS.
Ok, so that's actually just a bonus, but the visual of Arms of the Astral Self is a really nice bonus lol.
The actual main effects of this ability aren't really a big deal, because if you're playing Popeye, you're going to emphasize Strength. Being able to use Wisdom in its place is meh. BUT
Tumblr media
That doesn't look like normal melee range to me.
(ok, I just couldn't find a gif of Popeye's arm stretching out *as* he punches someone, but I know that's a thing)
Body of the Astral Self lets you deflect energy damage and do double your Martial Arts die for damage with your punches. Awakened Astral Self increases your AC without armor and ups your punches per turn to four.
Ephemera
Ok, so, that's your classes. Obviously your background is going to be Sailor. Sailor gives you Athletics and Perception proficiencies, so (assuming you take Barbarian as your base class, which you should) take Intimidation and Survival as your class proficiencies. You could also ask your GM if you could take Performance as one of your proficiencies.
Tumblr media
You *probably* want to be human, especially if your GM is using Tasha's Cauldron style ability increases, but Orc or the like would be a defensible choice.
(also, I will put in a word here for playing a harengon and being a mix of Popeye and Bugs Bunny who eats carrots instead of spinach. And you get to add your proficiency to Initiative, meaning you're more likely to be able to eat your carrots at the start of combat)
For feats, Sentinel would definitely be good, given how often Popeye hits some as they move towards him. Tavern Brawler would also be very fitting, if perhaps a bit redundant (maybe if you want to forgo Monk levels), and if your GM doesn't let you take Performance in lieu of a normal Barbarian skill, you could take Skilled (I'd suggest Acrobatics, Performance and Concertina). Crusher would be amazing just for the 5' knockback, which is very Popeye. Fighting Initiate would also be good to give you Two-Weapon Fighting.
Downsides
Now. There are some drawbacks. 5e refuses to let you take two bonus actions in a turn, which means you can't rage and spend ki points for Astral Self stuff on the same turn. I would recommend asking your GM if you can do both in one turn provided you do nothing else (and if they're reticent, offer to forgo the martial arts damage when manifesting your arms). I feel like that's honestly pretty fitting for Popeye eating spinach.
Other Options?
You could go Way of the Sun Soul, since Popeye does some fire-y shit with his pipe when he powers up sometimes. However, you could actually forgo Monk levels entirely, take Tavern Brawler for your punching, and get levels of Warlock instead. In this case, you probably want to go Pact of the Blade (with a gauntlet as your pact weapon) and Hexblade as your patron. I can' find an invocation that lets you channel your eldritch blast through melee, alas, but honestly, Eldritch Smite and hex-pact-blade stuff works well, and if you want to use your EB for stuff, like repelling blast, just fluff it. Gift of the Depths would be really fitting for Popeye.

Oh fishy! That Billy and Camille mood board was…..*sighs dreamily* everything. Agh!! You just have no idea!! All of y’all!! All the billy writers and artists, the billy mutuals, I know I lurk, anonymously…not unlike how billy does, but in my mind y’all are the attic gang. My attic gang, all of us loving and bullying the attic boy, and also the wall boy….I just…aaah…perfection. Anyways, your stories are keeping me alive woof, I’ll be catching up on the latest chapters of rats in the shadows (gee I hope I got the name right lol) later when I can (life you know) and I’m losing my marbles thinking about BEAN. BILLY BEAN BILLY’S BEAN!!! And how sweetly devoted he is to his Camille and Bean!! It’s just….*sighs happily* so so sweet….all these mood boards have been cracking me up they’re so SILLY!! I keep wishing to stick a sticker of canned beans on Beans’ forehead…these dark urges smh…
Okay but yes, right right, I need to get to the actual reason for my silly little ask, okay so, how would billy be with an s/o who’s very musical? We know he loves Camille in all her drawing and painting glory, (does she paint too? I know she draws, I guess I just assumed she might’ve dabbled in paints as well, apologies if not) but what about a musical gal? My family is extremely musically inclined, we all sing and everyone plays instruments (I draw too but again, we have our answers with precious Camille! And Thank goodness, for I’d love to draw with him, or draw a mustache on him while he sleeps if nothing else) and so I always wonder if he’d like music like I do…..I very much rely on music, it helps me, and I wonder if it’d help him too! The beat of the music grounds me, I can copy and mimic almost all the specific voice of all the singers I listen to, it’s patterns that I can rely on….it’s just all very soothing and helps me be happy while also calming! It’s like….a sturdy rock. Always consistent and nice!
And so I always imagine singing with Billy, (I know he’s a terrible singer but it’d be so wonderful and fun still!) dancing with him, teaching how to tap dance, singing and humming to him while holding him and running my fingers through his hair, playing my concertina for him, playing the piano with him, making up sound games, like, me play a tune and he has to mimic it, or him make up a tune and I’ll try to play it for him, it just seems so fun! All of it! Always singing and dancing with each other!! Loud and fast when we are okay! Or softly and slow, very quiet songs when either of us need soothing or comforting….it just all seems terrible sweet to me, I’m just a sucker and have been having so much fun practicing my concertina, so I’ve just been really having this on the brain eheh (btw I feel like a little sailor with my concertina, I freaking love it aaah)
Hello!! Glad to hear from you again dear anon, I was wondering about a couple of days ago actually!! You always leave such sweet messages <333 The part about the attic gang made me giggle heheheh <333 well, if it means anything, if you ever wanna go off anon I at least will be very accepting, and I'm sure others will do. But I respect your decision to stay anonymous if that's more comfortable to you!! I hope you have a fun time reading the last few chapters, I'm quite proud of them!!
Little Beanie baby honestly deserves a little treat in the form of a sticker on her forehead. Little guy <333 Also yeah, Camille is a painter!! Shes a painting mayor actually. Hats why shes in the college, or I guess the academy she goes to. And Camille would draw a mustache on him ough <3 As for the part about a musical s/o you're pretty spot on!! Certain types of music would definitely be very grounding to him, and could help a lot with calming him down. He in general likes simple little songs I think (think Daisy Bell like in the commentary) and I do think he sings to himself to calm down!! Though he is pretty tuneless... and his singing voice is not pleasant even if he tries... though he usually sings the sing badly on purpose to entertain himself lmao. Hes like a very loud, annoying parrot in human form.
That's why he would love to have a s/o who is actually musical lol. At first it would be to annoy them honestly, ruin their flow with singing badly, mock them when they can't reach a high not and things like that. Being a little shit in general. But as time moves on he would grow to appreciate their talents more. Sometimes he would quiet down when they start playing their instrument and listen carefully, maybe even clap for them in the end if he gets exited. Sometimes his lovers would would sing him to sleep after a hard day. And he would genuinely start joining in on them when they are singing, not to make fun of them but for them to share a moment together. In fact, he would use any chance he can to sing with his s/o, sometimes asking them to join in on singing a silly little song.
One thing though, is to watch over your instrument when around him. It's very fun that you play a concertina but there's always a chance he could break it. Whether on accident from being clumsy, or in a moment when he loses control of himself and breaks everything around him, or maybe out of pettiness after an argument. Either way after the fact he would feel immensely guilty, which will send him spiraling and so on and so forth. Not a pleasant experience for either of you.
This reminds me that Bean will be a musician in the future. She will play bass and melodica and will play in a band. I wonder what else I could do with this concept in relation to Billy...
Thanks once again for sending me this ask, I always am happy to hear from you!!

cont with @scxrytxles from here
Chester looks up from the claw-marks carved into Charlevoix’s arm and the damp rag he holds against the oozing gashes. The sharpness of his expression stands in stark contrast to the gentle pressure of his hands against the injury.
“That’s what you’re worrying about?” He asks. “I could have taken your arm off and you’re trying to decide whether or not you’ve, what, offended me?” Incredulity drips from between his words, caustic and critical. He doesn’t like the taste or the texture of it in his mouth, bitter and brittle. It’s kind, what the young sailor is doing. He’s trying to be kind and Chester is… not. He knows better. He was taught better.
He sits in silence, carefully peeling back the cloth, nose wrinkling at the scent of blood and medicinal herbs. Chester pulls Charlevoix’s arm straight, carefully setting his sharp, sharp claws back into the wound.
In the opposite direction he’d swung, he pulls his hand. The flesh seals, knitting itself back together as if this little lapse in control had never happened. Chester releases him quickly, pulling his hands back to himself and sitting back on his heels.
“If you give me your shirt I can. Wash and. Repair it.” He offers limply, trying hard to look the mortal in his face for this next bit. He can’t quite manage it.
“I apologize. For earlier. It is my fault, not yours. Understand?”
“Um.  Yes?”  It seems like a very self-evident question to Charlevoix: usually, people wouldn’t lash out like that for no reason, therefore, he is trying to determine the reason.  But the fact that Chester is asking him this question indicates Chester does not follow Charlevoix’s logic here. Charlevoix considers attempting to explain it for him, because Chester is being quiet and that means Charlevoix is allowed to talk, but he is not quite sure of the wording.  He is running it through in his head for the third time when Chester takes his arm again and he freezes, it still hurts-
And then it is not hurting and not bleeding and Charlevoix wiggles his fingers and they move just how they should.  Which is nice, because he wants to keep being able to play the concertina, and also keep being able to do other things that involve his fingers moving.  Okay.
“Oh, no... no thank you.  I like my shirt.”  He chews his bottom lip.  “I don’t.... I don’t need it to be anyone’s fault.  I just want it to- not happen again.  Uh.  If there’s anything I can do... not do... for it to not.  You know.  Not happen again?  I’d like that.”

Alexander Skarsgård: ‘I still wake up shivering in the foetal position’
By Kevin EG Perry
October 1, 2016, The Guardian
A few years ago, Alexander Skarsgård turned up at a Hammarby football match in Stockholm noticeably… what’s a polite way of putting this? Worse for wear? “I was shitfaced,” says Skarsgård. “I went up in front of the crowd and started doing this chant. Someone put it on Youtube. I’m very drunk, going: ‘You fucking cunts, listen to me!’ I thought: ‘This is real embarrassing.’”
During the bleak hangover that followed, the 40-year-old Swedish actor thought he might have torpedoed a career that had just seen him get the part of Tarzan in this summer’s blockbuster. In fact it made him an even more perfect fit for the role. “Warner Bros had said they needed someone primal and animalistic,” he says. “So my agent sent them the video, saying: ‘Isn’t this motherfucker primal enough for you?’”
Another one of the half-million people who watched it was John Michael McDonagh, writer-director of The Guard and Calvary, who was on the lookout for a hard-drinking detective for his pitch-black buddy comedy War On Everyone. “He saw the video and went: ‘That’s the guy,’” says Skarsgård. “It got me the job. The moral of the story is: Make a fool of yourself and people will love you. Remember that, kids.”
youtube
When we meet around midday in the lobby of the Hotel Normandy during the Deauville American film festival, it seems he’s taken his own lesson to heart. The previous night he was so smashed that he invaded the DJ booth at War On Everyone’s afterparty and proved that while you can take the man out of Sweden… “I played strictly Abba,” he says. “When in doubt, Lay All Your Love On Me. We closed that place down.”
As he concertinas himself into the back of a people carrier for the two-hour drive to Charles de Gaulle airport, sheltering his eyes behind dark shades, it’s somehow reassuring to know that savage hangovers afflict even movie stars who’ve been blessed with the sort of face that led Ben Stiller to cast him in Zoolander so he could ask him: “Did you ever think there’s more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good-looking?”
Yet he was back with his pecs out this summer for The Legend Of Tarzan, a blockbuster that, like many in 2016, struggled at the box office. He says he was drawn in by the character’s search for a place in the world and impressed by Harry Potter director David Yates’s ability to make a £140m film feel “intimate”. But it was in some ways a change of scale. “I work mostly in independent movies so the scope of Tarzan was definitely different,” Skarsgård says. “I didn’t feel pressured [by the box office demands] though. It wasn’t like: ‘Oh fuck, this is a big movie.’ It was an incredible experience, but it was also nine months of just gym, work and bed. I didn’t have a sip of alcohol. It was robotic.”
Which explains the appeal of War On Everyone, a film in which he both downs and takes shots in every direction. Skarsgård plays Terry, a perma-drunk, Glen Campbell-obsessed, unapologetically corrupt detective partnered with the lightning-witted Bob, played by The Martian’s Michael Peña. It’s the old bad cop/worse cop routine, but laced with fierce cleverness. Where Shane Black’s The Nice Guys were bumbling dunces, McDonagh’s pair trade wisecracks peppered with esoteric references to everyone from Simone de Beauvoir to realist painter Andrew Wyeth.
“It’s so un-PC, it’s so me,” says Skarsgård. “You could tell John didn’t give a fuck about anything, which I found refreshing in a script. I’d read a couple of comedies but nothing that was fun or intelligent enough. When I got this script and it was dark and twisted and weird and completely out there, I was excited.” And besides, he adds, “[John is] a beautiful soul, which helps when you insult everyone.”
He even sees some similarities between his dirty detective and the king of the swingers. “As with Tarzan, there’s dichotomy in the character between being a civilised man and a beast. That’s something we can all relate to. We live in a civilised society, but 12 hours ago we were beasts dancing to Abba.”
The young Skarsgård’s first taste of fame was his own. His appearance at the age of 12 in TV film The Dog That Smiled made him a child star, but he soon found he hated the attention and quit acting. “I was desperate to be normal and blend in,” he says. He saw his chance at a life on the straight-and-narrow by enrolling in the Swedish military at 19, “unheard of” in his family. “That was my way to rebel,” he says.
Afterwards, still in search of himself, he decided to head to university in the UK. But he swerved London to find a more authentic British experience, and enrolled at Leeds Met. “It doesn’t get more British than a northern, working-class town,” he says. “There was a club called the Majestic where they had student nights and it was a pound a pint. We lived in Headingley, near the pubs on the Otley Run. Uni was a bullshit excuse for being there. I was studying British culture. I loved it.”
Deciding at 20 that he may have been a little hasty quitting acting, it was while visiting Stellan in LA that he won his small part in Zoolander – at his first Hollywood audition – but it was a false dawn. It would be another seven years before he got a major role, and he spent the time in between shuttling between theatres and coffee shops. When he was cast in David Simon and Ed Burns’s Iraq miniseries Generation Kill, he spent a month convinced he was about to be sacked. “It was only after four or five weeks I realised they weren’t going to recast,” he says. “Before that all I could think about was how much it would cost them to reshoot the big fight scenes after they fired me.”
Imposter syndrome is a common feeling – although a little hard to believe from a handsome, 6ft 4in movie star. “That shit doesn’t change,” he assures me. “I felt like that on Tarzan. I was on set thinking: ‘When is the director going to come over and say: Dude, you can go home. We’ve got Tarzan here now.’ That was 10 years after Generation Kill.”
Alexander Skarsgård, then: just like the rest of us. Fond of a pub crawl, obnoxious at sporting events, constantly waiting for that tap on the shoulder telling him the jig is up. So life is still pretty much the same when you’re really, really, really ridiculously good-looking?
“I mean, fuck, I still wake up shivering in the foetal position,” he says. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I get. Getting drunk on someone else’s dime listening to Abba is brilliant, but my life is still shit. I’m still agonising. What the fuck am I doing with my life? Where do I belong? Who gives a fuck? Let me assure you, it doesn’t get any better.”

oh HELLO okay. for both oscar and john: 🚫 - what's something genuinely weird about them? like, not something considered quirky yet cute- something genuinely weird that puts other people off at first; 💫 - what do they think is the most attractive feature they have?; and 🎼 - what musical scale would they be? what instrument would they be? what instrument would they play if their universe allowed it? <3
🚫 - what's something genuinely weird about them? like, not something considered quirky yet cute- something genuinely weird that puts other people off at first
okay okay okay... not sure where the line is honestly? like maybe they are quirky and cute. to me <3 this sounds like it is meant to be a first impression thing too... trying to think of this with that in mind
i think oscar's general vibe is probably initially off-putting for a lot of people? not necessarily most people, but a solid few. then he is ultimately charming but — he has an Air that i can imagine results at times in head tilting. and i have talked about this a bit before but i think it's only going to result in more head tilting as he moves further away from what he is expected to be (ie the longer he goes without being married).
john... john canonically is not following the script if he doesn't want to and he does not look like a guy who won't follow the script so i think there is that. Local Man Can't Take Hint. but i think otherwise his weird parts aren't going to become evident until you get close enough to him because clearly this is not his only mode!
💫 - what do they think is the most attractive feature they have?
oscar's sparkling personality 💖 and also his everything else 😌
i feel like (i have made up in my head that) john has major issues about his own attractiveness... like he has a Front he can put on that is highly attractive... a Way With Young Women... men certainly find his body to be attractive and he wants his body to be attractive but should it really be his most attractive feature? should he not aim for his most attractive traits to be intellectual, emotional, and spiritual rather than physical? etc etc. i like when he has complexes. being a hot Adams is surely a heavy burden to bear because you have to worry that people only like you for your looks and very few of your family members ever experienced that.
🎼 - what musical scale would they be? what instrument would they be? what instrument would they play if their universe allowed it?
i went to music school and i still don't know enough to answer the first question here very well... oscar has a lot of notes per octave in a fun experimental way and john is solidly classical major 7 tone etc. i think.
i don't think this is my actual final opinion but my brain is saying oscar is a concertina and john is a flute but i will have to consider that further.
i have already decided that until proven otherwise john can do what his actor can do so i guess that's singing, violin and piano? oscar would most enjoy playing something stringed i think.

Seconds out, round three.
The third phase of the 2023-24 campaign begins at 12.30 on Saturday lunchtime when North End face Millwall at Deepdale in front of the SKY Cameras. The game comes on the back of the second international break of the season and with North End having lost the three games leading up to the break, quite heavily. Following on from the Millwall game North End will be at home on Wednesday evening, once again in front of the SKY Cameras when newly relegated Southampton will be the visitors to Deepdale. Clearly North End need to bounce back quickly after the week from hell that we endured at the start of the month and although we currently sit third in the Championship table, the chasing pack have almost caught us up and wins are now needed to build on the, generally, great start North End have had in the opening weeks of the season
Millwall come to Deepdale, on Saturday, in fifteenth position in the Championship table but are only five points behind North End as the table starts to concertina below Leicester and Ipswich. Personally I think Gary Rowett had done great work since taking over at the New Den but he surprisingly parted company with the club on Wednesday leaving things very much up in the air in South Bermondsey. The Lions also have several injury concerns leading up to the game and I suppose if there is a good time to play them then this is probably it. However, as we all know, complacency can be a very cruel attitude to take in this division and North End must be on it from the first whistle to the last to take the three points they desperately need to build that early season confidence back up.
Next Wednesday evening Southampton are the visitors to Deepdale in the first league contest between the two sides at Deepdale since November 2008, a game which North End lost 2-3. The Saints sit three points behind North End having won five, drawn two and lost four of their opening eleven games. They have taken seven points from this last three games and have some very dangerous players still on their books after their relegation from the Premier League in May. Russell Martin is the man at the helm these days after deciding to leave Swansea to take up the role at St Mary`s and he will be best remembered for the melee with Ryan Lowe at Liberty Stadium back towards the end of last season. There is no doubt that Southampton have some quality in their ranks but they have conceded twenty one goals so far this season which indicates that they are not unbeatable and if North End can keep it tight at the back then I think we can take something from this game.
And finally this week:- joy for England in the Euro 24 qualifier against Italy on Tuesday evening means that we are going to Germany next Summer for a competition in which we will be one of the favourites with the bookies. It was comprehensive in the end as England won 3-1 and gave all those teams around Europe a little reminder of what we can do when we put our minds to it.

The Story of Maskandi: A Unique South African Genre
South Africa is a country renowned for its diverse and vibrant music scene, where a multitude of genres and traditions coexist. Among the rich tapestry of South African music, one genre stands out for its unique sound, deep cultural roots, and enduring popularity: Maskandi. In this article, we will delve into the story of Maskandi, exploring its origins, characteristics, and significance in South African music and culture.
Origins of Maskandi
Maskandi is a traditional Zulu music genre that traces its roots back to the Zulu people, one of South Africa's largest ethnic groups. The genre emerged in the early 20th century as a form of folk music, primarily played on acoustic string instruments. Its name, "Maskandi," is derived from the Zulu word "iskhanda," which means "head," referring to the signature Zulu headgear worn by traditional Zulu men.
Instruments:
Maskandi is characterized by its distinct instrumentation, which includes the guitar, concertina (accordion-like instrument), and the distinctive Zulu bow, known as the "umakhweyana." These instruments create the genre's distinctive sound, blending melodic guitar lines with rhythmic bow playing.
Characteristics of Maskandi
Maskandi music is known for its unique characteristics that set it apart from other South African genres:
1. Storytelling Through Song:
At the heart of Maskandi lies the tradition of storytelling. Songs often narrate tales of love, historical events, social issues, and everyday life in Zulu communities. Maskandi musicians are praised for their ability to craft intricate and evocative lyrics that captivate listeners.
2. Virtuoso Guitar Playing:
Maskandi guitarists are celebrated for their virtuosity. They employ fingerpicking techniques and intricate guitar solos that add depth and complexity to the music.
3. Fusion of Tradition and Modernity:
Maskandi is unique in its ability to blend traditional Zulu elements with modern influences. While deeply rooted in Zulu culture, it has adapted to contemporary musical trends, incorporating elements of jazz, blues, and even rock.
Significance in Zulu Culture
Maskandi is not only a genre of music but also an integral part of Zulu culture. It plays a significant role in various aspects of Zulu life:
1. Cultural Identity:
Maskandi music is a source of cultural pride and identity for the Zulu people. It reflects their traditions, values, and experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.
2. Social Commentary:
Maskandi musicians often use their music to comment on social and political issues, addressing topics such as poverty, inequality, and the challenges faced by Zulu communities.
3. Preservation of Tradition:
Through Maskandi, Zulu traditions and oral history are preserved and passed down to younger generations. The genre ensures that cultural knowledge and stories continue to be shared and celebrated.
Maskandi's Influence on South African Music
While Maskandi is deeply rooted in Zulu culture, its influence extends beyond its cultural boundaries. The genre has inspired and contributed to the broader South African mp3 landscape. Elements of Maskandi can be heard in various contemporary South African genres, such as Mbaqanga, Afro-pop, and even hip-hop.
Prominent Maskandi Artists
Several Maskandi artists have achieved fame and recognition both within South Africa and internationally. Some of the genre's prominent figures include:
1. Phuzekhemisi (Bheki Ngcobo):
Phuzekhemisi is known for his socially conscious lyrics and masterful guitar playing. His music addresses issues affecting Zulu communities and South Africa as a whole.
2. Shwi Nomtekhala:
This dynamic duo combines Maskandi with elements of contemporary South African music, creating a fusion of sounds that appeals to a wide audience.
3. Johnny Clegg:
While Johnny Clegg is primarily known for his fusion of Western and African music, he collaborated with Maskandi musicians, including Sipho Mchunu, to create music that celebrated Zulu culture and traditions.
Conclusion:
Maskandi is a testament to the enduring power of music to preserve cultural heritage, tell compelling stories, and foster a sense of identity and unity. Its unique blend of tradition and modernity continues to captivate audiences, ensuring that the rich musical heritage of the Zulu people remains vibrant and relevant in the diverse landscape of South African music. As Maskandi continues to evolve and adapt, it reminds us of the beauty of cultural diversity and the timeless resonance of authentic storytelling through music.

FAHn Thoughts 1
So there were two watch parties over the weekend. The first one went well. It was two livestreams, and I enjoyed the experience of chatting with other fans of FAH while watching livestreams. One of them was one of my favorites, the Anne stream! Oh, that was so fun to comment on with others! The other was the rehearsal stream, and that was fun, too. I learned that fahns got the concertina for F, as well as other instrument/instrument parts for A and H. A has never used what he got on a stream, and H hasn’t either (but did in a live show). Anyway, it’s just interesting how much one can learn during a watch party that you just...never expected to. It was kind of nice to observe other fahns, and know...I am not the only one who has felt disappointment or hurt as a fahn. I think it’s just part of being too invested, because they...each of them are very much themselves. They always prioritize the wider audience over devoted fans. They aren’t even comfortable with the fact they have fans, and have expressed that. When they like something fahns do, cool. If they don’t, they just do what they want.
The second watch party was also fun, for the most part. However, the offensive sketch was played during it, the one...that does more than offend me. The one that took months to recover from emotionally. Hhhh. I don’t think I will do a fanvid for fahns now. It was hurtful to see that sketch come up, and know other fahns just watched it. I left the watch party, and rejoined after it was done. Still, seeing the beginning of it triggered me. I didn’t realize that until this morning. Yesterday was VERY busy. I had Goodwill, plus 5 appointments. But this morning...I cried a little. Even seeing the beginning reminded me of the ignorance and the lack of care and understanding it shows. I...FAH was at the point in their careers where they could afford to produce DVDs of their shows to sell. It was a profitable business. They were not in a desperate place financially. They were not in a desperate place reputation-wise. They were building a good fan base. Like, they just didn’t care about being offensive. They thought the laughs were worth the risk. I don’t know that any of them have ever felt worse than offended. I doubt it. But I can’t do a fanvid for the fahndom when it has triggered me this way. I am...it is best to just participate in small ways. I cannot get too involved. It is not safe. It is not best. I wish things were different, but...I’m blessed. I know I’m blessed. It’s actually kind of nice to be in a fahndom that I shouldn’t contribute to. It takes pressure off. I only have to be around. I can enjoy, but keep in mind...it’s not completely safe. And it’s the same for a few other fahns. There are fans who dislike livestreams where FAH drinks alcohol, because they have relatives who have died of alcoholism. I am not the only one who has been triggered by FAH’s actions in livestreams or sketches. I just try to focus on the good. There’s a lot to focus on there. If they hadn’t caused me to feel worse than offended, things would be different. Oh well. I’m still glad I found them.
