The worst part of the whole situation had to be that Gordon had no idea their house was haunted. When a chilling breeze whipped through the halls on an otherwise warm August night, he said something about old houses being drafty. When objects fell from high places, he blamed it on living on a hill. When the microwave, eight times out of ten, completely failed to function, and the other two times, cooked to either volcanic or hypothermic temperatures, he said something about old appliances or old wiring or old something, ignoring the very obvious answer that their house was super extremely mega haunted. Somehow, that was driving Joshua more nuts than the poltergeist that inhabited their home. Sure, the easy solution would be to just tell his dad they were haunted and give him proof somehow, but Joshua had inherited his father’s incredibly stubborn nature. No, he was going to deal with Benrey himself.

Okay that might work, I’ve thought about it my only hang up having been that I’ve seen it a lot (John Dory in da bottle) and I wanted to try something fresh but like I’m also someone who will just change things on a dime should it benefit the stories and characters and JD in da bottle would make for great character moments. Though I’m still probably going to draw little things from the other possibilities, I only really have two other things maybe, just for fun.

I’m still not sure about making this a big thing but I’m all for just having fun with it so if you guys have anything you wanna see lemme know!!

frenrey chainsaw man au or you can take them as just wearing cool suits on another heist probably. 

BUT if we ARE talking chainsaw man... i’ve got some thoughts: 

* they both work for u.s. devil hunter/research division Black Mesa run by g-man (who is NOT a makima and will not be pulling the same shit as her oh god oh jeez, but he is in charge of black mesa who does messed up science stuff so his hands aren’t clean of everything)

* during the big gun devil attack 13 years ago, gordon got his arm blown off and a fragment of gun devil flesh embedded in there, giving him gun arm. black mesa “recruited” him right after (a.k.a. didn’t really give him a choice). he can’t turn the gun back into a normal arm, so when he doesn’t need it, he has to hide it either in a really long sleeve or some other kind of covering because he can’t go walking around with it out obviously. also joshua is alive!!! i am never killing this child off!!!! post-gun devil attack, gordon lost his original job and had a hard time finding work because of the whole gun arm thing, but he needed funds to support joshie, so that’s why he didn’t really have a choice but to join black mesa. 

* benrey’s classified as the Alien/Extraterrestrial Fiend and their powers include temporarily shapeshifting into various crazy amalgamations and singing out colorful balls and being a general annoyance. BUT he’s actually secretly a devil--specifically the Unknown Devil (fear of the unknown). They don’t remember that they’re a super powerful devil, but the black mesa higher ups are aware of his true nature and keep him nerfed. because they aren’t fully sure what will happen if the Unknown Devil uses their full power. which is ironic because the fear of not knowing what benrey’s truly capable of feeds his power more. the only thing black mesa can do is make sure benrey never remembers. 

some other not as thought out thoughts on this au that i’m throwing around in my head: 

* the rest of the science team are all working for black mesa too obviously

* bubby is the Combustion Fiend because i want him to have the fire powers and also still have a connection to cars (gas-run cars use combustion engines)

* coomer is a human in contract with a devil. still not sure what devil(s) it’ll be. violence devil would’ve been perfect if the violence fiend didn’t already exist. maybe a clone devil and/or a knowledge devil supplemented with his own cybernetic implants. 

* tommy is the son of g-man and his contracts are a secret. :)

* sunkist is the Dog Fiend--an experiment by black mesa to see if it was possible for a devil to possess other bodies other than humans. she can be any dog but defaults to golden retriever because that’s what his body was originally. tommy is her favorite.

Can I just say I love the shipping scene in HLVRAI? Like, I've never been in a fandom where it's been this CHILL before. Each ship has appeal and could actually work (unless you're intentionally being weird about it, but I haven't really encountered those people, this is personal experience here), and it's just so-!

Frenrey is wonderful because they're both silly, if those two met under different circumstances you KNOW they'd be friends, and it can be about forgiveness and healing. I love that.

Freelatta is great because Tommy and Gordon always have each others' backs, and those two will see each other through thick and thin.

Sodashipping is delightful because Darnold and Tommy just click SO WELL, they have a lot of common interests outside of soda, and you guys who give Darnold a dog as well as so correct about that omg.

Darzen is really fun because these two have never once interacted in canon but so easily could have. Like Forzen probably had to go through that area to progress as well, what hijinx would they get into?

I don't see Gordon and Forzen being shipped just the two of them often (shoutout to hlvrv, that was unexpected but really fun), but that's another instance I could also see. They're polycule a lot of the time, which hell yeah.

Tomrey is awesome because of the pre-established friendship between Benrey and Tommy, how even down to the final wire Benrey didn't really want to hurt Tommy. Outside of shipping their relationship is just wonderful.

Darnrey is also fun in that regard. Gamer partners.

Benzon as well. This one really depends on your interpretation of canon but it's always fun when it pops up again. The history between those two has so much potential. I don't personally ship this one but it's always fun to explore.

Another I don't have the name for but Darnold and Gordon. Orang. And just the unconditional support from Darnold- wonderful.

Frenreylatta is just delightful. Like you take all the best parts of frenrey, tomrey, and freelatta and put them in a blender and you get pure wholesomeness. I fucking love this one. Absolute winner. And I also really love how usually depictions of this one don't hide the part parts, either, but it's still a generally more supportive relationship overall. Five stars.

Frenreylattarnold is also just *chef's kiss*. Darnold just brings a vibe to the group they don't otherwise have. It simultaneously makes it more chill and more chaotic.

Again I don't know the name, but add Forzen into the mix and you have a really fun, complex dynamic of people who just love each other. I'm so fucking here for it.

I know I'm missing some but AOUGH

I can't not talk about my favorite ship here, though. Boomer sweep. Boomer wins. Every time boomer pops up on my feed I get so fucking happy. Chaos grandpas who fucking love and support each other SO unconditionally. They work through their trauma together while committing crimes. The stark contrasts between them also aid wonderfully to their dynamic, like how Coomer doesn't like video games while Bubby is a speedrunner. They each have their own lives but they want to spend them together. NO I'M NORMAL DID YOU KNOW THAT I SWEAR I'M NORMAL-

Gubby's a fun one, too, and from my understanding that one's a rarepair. But yeah, putting Bubby's firey personality next to Gman's calm and collected one creates a lot of fun opportunities, and helps explore the differences between Half Life and HLVRAI Gman in more in-depth ways. It's always fun when it pops up again, I love it. (Shoutout to catloki for this one.)

I don't member the ship name but adding Coomer in there is also really fun. Chaos grandpas take over the world together <3

I haven't seen Coomer and Gman being shipped individually before but I could also see that one. Coomer would be able to simultaneously meet Gman where he's at while also encouraging him to step outside his comfort zone, and also probably being a terrible influence on him gGFDHSJAKGF.

All this to say I'm not really a shipper. These guys could be just friends and I'd be okay with that, which I guess lends itself to the RTVS crew and how well they all stepped into character. Everyone just has dynamics with each other, that come out naturally, and makes it easy for us to really see where each relationship could go.

I just fucking love this fandom.

Benrey says with a mild grin: "time to sleep! oh yeah!" "NO!" Gordon yells at him as Benrey runs in the opposite direction of where they're heading, back down the corridor. "bed is over here! back here!" Benrey continues, undetered and pointing towards the end of the room at corridor. Gordon is exasperated: "It's not even been the 3 hours we usually can be awake for!!" Suddenly, Benrey turns back, dragging his feet and mumbling: "we can't go in that room. there's no bed there."

"Let's go to the alien homeworld...and kill a space god! Or something," Gordon says, his intent set on going through with what they'd initially agreed upon. Darnold, standing beside him, swallows nervously. He begins to pet Sasha, almost out of habit: "O-oh, yes! Yes we were...that was planned...! How could I forget? Albeit... not the... safest option, but I suppose we've run out of all other options-" His petting had gotten a little forceful with the building nervousness, and Sasha lets out a noise of pain when Darnold's fingers dig into her back. "Sorry about that, Sash'," Darnold whispers. Dr Coomer decides to step in, responding: "Oh Dr Darnold, I do believe we sold our safety the moment we stepped into Black Mesa! Don't you remember the paperwork?"

Gordon drags a hand down his face, exhausted: "I- I don't know what you're talking about, man… I don't know what kind of docum- paperwork you've been signing, but I never signed up for any of this-" Bubby raises an eyebrow: "What are you talking about? We've ALL signed our paperwork, Gordon." "What paperwork?" Gordon squawks at him, "You didn't sign any paperwork, you CAME from this place. Isn't that, like, a given?" Bubby simply replies: "Yes, precisely! And I've signed it. Why haven't you?" Darnold sighs: "I know I signed the paperwork, but-" Tommy cuts in to remind Gordon: "We signed it on our first day remember, Mr Freeman?" "I," is all Gordon manages to spit out. Darnold continues: "I know I signed the paperwork, but, you know, one never expects to find youself in such a, a situation where it actually becomes a huge concern. I mean, the occasional chemical burn and fizz accidents are inevitable, and quite avoidable if I may add, but a life is quite a different matter, you see."

Benrey scratches at his chin, looking up in mock thought: "yeah, Darnold's got the right idea. should, uh, listen to him. let's go back, 's boring here." Tommy's eyes fall on Sasha, the Gubb nuzzling into Darnold's arm. He points at her: "O-oh, are you- are you scared- concerned about Sasha, uh, Darnold?" "Y'know, that's probably not gonna be our biggest problem," Gordon says, observantly. "Cuz', I mean, we've seen what she can do, she- honestly, she's got a better shot at surviving than MOST of us. She could be kinda useful, actually."

Darnold shoots Gordon a disapproval look: "Dr Freeman, she's a delicate soul. I would never put her through anything we've been through!" "We- we kinda already have-" Gordon attempts to say. Bubby points an accusatory finger at him: "Gordon, there's no need to be rude, the man is talking about his companion, not a tool!" Gordon throws his arms up in surrender: "You know what? You're right. I'll take this one gracefully and admit that. "Kinda fucked up," Bubby reiterates. "Yeah, yeah," Gordon responds, then speaks to Darnold, "I'll give it to you for managing to keep your compassion in all this, dude. Hey, you might walk out of this sane afterall-" Tommy's voice overrides anything Gordon is saying: "Maybe- maybe the best thing we can do is to leave her here." Darnold tenses at that. He turns back to Tommy, where the latter is looking elsewhere, the MP5 still poised in his grip pointing at the opposite wall. "You said this would be- this was a temporary arrangement…" Tommy trails off /End ID.]

Whatever the Fuck Benrey Is: Chapter Ten: I Hate That You're Right

‘We’re heading back now. See you in a few hours,’ Gordon’s text read when Benrey returned to his phone post indulging in a hot shower. It was dated twenty minutes ago so that ‘few hours’ still stood as a long time. But at least when he did finally get here, Benrey would have someone to play games with again.

‘k’ Benrey sent back. He’d behaved, despite largely being bored for this long, he could last a little longer. With nothing else to do for now though, he settled in for more solo gaming.

Over the next hour or so, he exchanged a couple more texts with Gordon, nothing substantial, just idle chit-chat. Not too long after that conversation petered out, Tommy texted him with, ‘Mr. Freeman fell asleep in backseat. I’m a bit worried after yesterday. This morning he said he slept the whole night through after falling asleep at the table so he shouldn’t be tired anymore, right? Dr. Coomer says its probably fine but IDK. Humans don’t normally sleep this much, do they?’

Gordon had lied; he’d been on the phone with Benrey most of last night again, claiming his nap had been enough sleep so he wanted Benrey to play the rest of Wind Waker ‘with’ him. The call had ended because he needed to head to breakfast before heading out. If he was lying about having slept to Tommy though then perhaps he’d been lying to Benrey too. Staying up all night wasn’t a non-issue. Maybe the napping made up for it but then why was he lying about it to Tommy? Benrey had no way of knowing so… ‘idk’

‘Yeah. I guess you wouldn’t know either. Maybe it’s the car making him sleepy because he fell asleep during our 1st ride too.’ After staying up most of the prior night too. Something was up for sure.

How important could sleep be even for fragile humans though? Gordon was an idiot sometimes, sure, but he wouldn’t willingly do something dangerous. The sleeping all night thing was probably just because humans liked the sun and didn’t want to fall asleep randomly in the middle of the day like Gordon kept doing. The sun was nice after all so Benrey understood. ‘prbly its fine’

From there their conversation drifted to other things before also petering out. Having a good conversation over text message was a bit hard and Benrey quickly grew too antsy to sit still for it. This was the longest he’d been away from Black Mesa ever and the call to wander the town more couldn’t be ignored now that it was really starting to sink in that this might be a permanent life change. Being in a similar boat, Bubby might want to go on a walk with him. They could bond over being lab experiments seeing the world for the first time. And so, leaving his phone on charge, he grabbed his camera and headed off to find Bubby.

The first thing Gordon did upon returning to the hotel was take a long shower. During which, he did his best not to worry about where Benrey had got off to. A text from Bubby had revealed that the two of them had gone off on a walk that had taken them further than they’d intended and were on their way back. Nothing to worry about, it made sense in fact, but… what were they doing on that walk?

Such thoughts were just Gordon being anxious though. Less than good sleep the past few nights made his anxiety spike. As far as he knew Benrey had behaved since it had been made clear to him what he had to gain for doing so, there was no reason for him to stop now.

Despite having mostly soothed his worries, he was hit with a rush of relief upon stepping out of the bathroom and finding Benrey sitting in one of the chairs, waiting for him. He’d shifted back to a less human look; his skin a light gray-purple, his hair dark purple, and his eyes an even more piercing yellow than last Gordon had seen them as such.

“Yo, play with me, you said you would.” He gestured with the Game Cube controller in his hand to the TV screen which already had the Melee character select menu open. His voice sounded odd in person after how long they’d talked on the phone for, almost as if it belonged to a different person. His phone friend that had kept him sane the past few nights couldn’t possibly be the same Benrey that had once tormented him.

Shaking off that odd feeling, Gordon walked over to sit in the chair next to him, picking up the other controller laid down on its armrest. “Good to see you again too.” That was entirely true because somehow his ‘phone friend’ and Benrey were indeed the same person. Probably for Benrey it had all been just more games and him being bored; he didn’t care about keeping Gordon sane, he just wanted something to do as well as the PS3 promised for good behavior. But that was fine, Gordon had never had much in the way of friends so he’d take whatever he could get because he’d really needed it the few few nights and still needed it now.

They played Melee and then Mario Kart for longer than was probably wise. In Gordon’s defense, Benrey insisted on playing just a little be longer each time he brought up that they should probably quit soon and Gordon hadn’t had the willpower to deny him when he wanted to keep playing too. Eventually though, partly due to his need to get something to eat, he did break away to go out for food.

By unspoken, unquestioned agreement that only hit Gordon as odd once in the car, Benrey went with him. Sitting down for a late lunch with him should’ve felt odd too but instead it felt completely normal even though he didn’t eat anything despite Gordon’s offer to get him something. Instead he sat across from Gordon, making idle conversation even as he played more on the Game Boy.

Afterwards came finding a storage facility with enough room for all the Black Mesa stuff they currently had packed into all the cars they’d brought over plus whatever else might be salvaged before they found a good temporary lab. Dr. Coomer and Tommy were still off with the rest of the scientists who’d returned to Tuefort. A quick text conversation with them ensured they’d continued to be kept busy for a while longer, allowing Gordon to not have to worry about dropping Benrey off back at the hotel before starting the search.

Tuefort being a small town made it easy to find a decent looking place that sold storage units. Because it wasn’t his money and in case the lab took a while to find and set up, Gordon went ahead and rented the biggest storage shed available. With Benrey’s help – who surprisingly didn’t complain too much upon being asked for assistance – he unloaded everything in the car he’d borrowed. It then took another trip to grab the rest of it from the other vehicles and store that too.

Once that was done, he was basically free for the rest of the day. Not that there was a whole lot of the day left. But it wasn’t so late that the library would be closed for another hour or two probably. So, still trying not to let his exhaustion show too much, he headed that way next. If he was lucky, he could do some good research today and then in the next couple days settle on a suitable place to live, allowing them to move out of the hotel rather quickly. Probably it wasn’t going to be that fast or easy but the sooner he started looking, presumably the sooner they’d be out too.

Speaking of moving into a more permanent place though, the assumption was that Benrey would be moving in with him. At the time of making that assumption it had felt like a somewhat unfortunate necessity, now it didn’t seem so bad. In fact, it would be rather enjoyable; constant company and someone to play games with. But well with his opinion of Benrey going up… “Do you want to live with me?” he asked as he pulled the car to a stop in the library’s mostly barren parking lot. It was rude not to ask him what he wanted, right? They were friends now and thus his thoughts on where he wanted to live mattered.

Benrey looked up from his game. “Uh… I don’t really got anywhere else to go.”

“Yeah but… well, I was talking about it with the others the morning Bubby left to head back here. I floated the idea that we find a place big enough for us all to live together, share the rent and all that. Tommy declined though ‘cause he prefers living alone with just Sunkist and Bubby said he wants to try living alone too. So we all kinda decided to just get our own places but uh… you weren’t there of course and it was already kinda assumed you’d stay roommates with me but… do you want that?”

“The other option is Coomer, right? Uh… nah, he’s not as much of a gamer as you.”

“The other, other option is you get your own place too.” Gordon still didn’t like the idea of Benrey going off into the world on his own without anyone nearby to even attempt to keep a leash on him but… it felt wrong to not bring it up as an option. He’d lived in the lab his whole life, not having his own space except for the gamer pad but presumably that was just a single room. He deserved a chance at more. “You can’t right now ‘cause you don’t have a job but you could start looking for one. And then once you find one and are able to, you could move out on your own.” That would hopefully delay it long enough for Benrey to be more set in being good and thus it would be less of an issue.

Benrey was silent for a few seconds as he stared out the front window. “So I could uh… have my own like, house? All mine, no one else’s?”

“Yes. Obviously getting you a job is easier said than done since you don’t have like a social security number or whatever. But we could figure something, I’m sure.” People forged those kinds of things all the time, didn’t they? “Just something to start thinking about and maybe working towards if you want it. For now though, you are stuck with me so c’mon, let’s go do some research and stuff.” He opened his door, allowing him to slide out.

After pocketing the Game Boy, Benrey followed suit, falling in step with him as they started for the library entrance. “How’s the library gonna help us find a place to live?”

“They got computers we can borrow to do research on.”

“We could’ve just used the hotel manager’s again. They leave pretty early, I think.”

“Nope. I can’t walk through walls so I’m not risking setting off an alarm by breaking in. But uh, you ever been in a library before?”

“In games, yeah. They seemed boring in real life.” Figures he’d both think that and that that would be the case.

“Nah, they’re cool. I’ll get you a library card while we’re here so you can use a computer and maybe check stuff out if you want to.”

“Hmm… okay.”

True to Gordon’s word, the library was cooler than it had seemed in theory. The books were indeed boring but there were so many of them, more than Benrey had ever seen in a single room before, they wrapped back around to be interesting to look at and run his fingers over as he walked along the aisles. In addition to them there were also movies and music CD’s available to check out. No video games but according to Gordon that might happen one day. The computers didn’t have any games installed on it but it was free to use with nothing but a library card which was pretty cool.

In all, it was enough to keep Benrey entertained while Gordon did his research. Occasionally he quietly called Benrey over or just texted him to get him to look at and give his thoughts on this or that apartment or house listing. Benrey didn’t have much of an opinion on most of it but Gordon considering his input to be important was novel enough he tried his best to provide some anyway.

Despite the newness of his environment and Gordon’s occasional desire for his opinion, his thoughts kept circling back around to having his own place. Never had he considered the idea before Gordon offered it. Not just a small room in an out of the way part of Black Mesa but a whole living set up, multiple rooms, possibly even a whole building, that was his and only his to do with as he pleased. He could set the temperature as high as he wanted, decorate in whatever way was fun, leave things as much a mess or as clean as he felt like at any given time. On the other hand though… living alone sounded like it might get lonely with the whole ‘alone’ part of that phrase. It was certainly an idea to chew on.

Eventually, around the time the novelty had mostly worn off, it was time to leave because the library was closing. “We can drive around and look at places tomorrow if you like,” Gordon said as they walked out back towards the car.

“Uh, sure.” And perhaps while doing so Benrey would pay attention and try to figure out what kinds of things one was supposed to watch for when looking to buy or rent their own place.

It was starting to get dark by the time they returned to the hotel. Despite that they hung out for a bit with the rest of the Science Team in the dining area for dinner and then a few hours more just to hang out. Upon returning to their room, Benrey had expected Gordon to go to sleep; he’d been yawning a lot, acting rather tired and he’d told the others he was off to bed. As soon as they were alone in their room though… “Wanna play some more Melee?”

Benrey didn’t bother with a verbal response. Instead he went over to pop the game into the console before turning it and the TV on while Gordon pulled the chairs back over. Why they’d even bothered to put the chairs back by the window was beyond Benrey. Who would want to sit idly by the window when there was a TV with a console connected to it?

As they played though, it became more and more obvious that perhaps Gordon should’ve gone to bed after all. Benrey was of course playing one handed, making it fair enough that he could rightfully tease Gordon for losing but also so he’d be challenged still. The latter wasn’t happening anymore. Gordon had been openly frustrated by the losses and the teasing which was fun but that emotional energy started petering out after a couple hours, leaving him boring to play with. Beating him was too easy and he didn’t seem to care, not even when Benrey called him a noob.

So as nice as it was to finally have someone willing to play games with him for a long stretch of time again… “Should probably give up and go to sleep now, huh?”

“Nah, nah, I’m… good for another round or two. Or maybe we could switch to Mario Kart or uh… Mario Party might be fun.”

Benrey, having nabbed Player 1 this time, backed out to the main menu. “You’re tired, it’s making you more stupid than normal.”

Proof of that was Gordon’s failure to look annoyed at being called stupid. “I’m fine. It’s only… uh…” he turned to check on the clock on the nightstand, “it’s not even midnight yet. I can stay up a bit longer.” … He was planning on staying up all night again? Really? Well, time to call him out on his lie then, huh?

Benrey stood and turned off the console and TV. He then walked over to stand in front of Gordon, letting him be the one looking down at him for once. He extended a hand for the controller still in Gordon’s hand. “You had a nightmare one night and then uh… the next night you asked me to help keep you up all night and then you did the same last night too, right?” Basically anyway, he’d called like halfway through it but had ended up staying awake for the rest of it.

Gordon looked at him in silence for a few second before sighing and handing over the controller. “Yeah, sounds about right.”

“Mm-hmm.” Benrey unplugged the controller from the console as he started loosely wrapping its cord around its middle. “And now you wanna stay up a third night in a row.”

“Uh… not the whole night maybe, just a few more hours.”

“But you said on the first night that missing one night wasn’t a problem but otherwise you need to sleep every night.” Benrey had paid attention because Gordon was his pet and he wanted to be a good pet owner.

“Yeah… I guess I did say that. But um… I’ve been napping and that makes up for it?” His voice rose a the end of it, making it a question, not a statement. Benrey wasn’t always good at picking up on those kinds of nuances but Gordon was often bad at not showing his emotions in some form on his face, in his words, or in his body language, making him easier to read than most people. It’s part of why Benrey liked him.

Benrey put the now neatly wrapped controller in its spot next to the Game Cube and unplugged the other one to start wrapping that one too. Wrapping the cord too tightly would be bad for it so he was careful to make it loose. “You lied to Tommy too. Said that uh… you slept all night last night when you didn’t. If napping made up for it, you wouldn’t’ve lied, right?” There wouldn’t have been a need to.

Gordon seemed to shrink under Benrey’s gaze. “Tommy told you I said that, huh?”

“Yep. Said he was worried ‘cause you fell asleep in the car after supposedly sleeping all afternoon and night.” Done wrapping the second controller now too. Which left him nothing to do with his hands as he turned back to Gordon so he just crossed them over his chest instead. “You’re a dirty lil’ liar, huh? Naughty boi.”

With a grimace, Gordon stood. “Look, I know I should sleep. It’s bad not to, I know that.But… well… I know I’m less likely to have a nightmare now that I’m finally out of that hellhole again. But I can almost guarantee I don’t have one, or at least don’t have a particularly vivid one,if I just stay up until I’m so exhausted I pass out. I promise that’s it’s… well, actually that is really fucking bad now that I’ve said it out loud but I just…” He trialed off with a groan as he rubbed his hand over his face. “I hate that you’re right.”

“Ha ha. I’m always right.”

“No, no you’re not. But you are right about this. So I guess I gotta go to bed. Do you think that we could…” He stopped as he looked away. Benrey waited for him to continue but after more than a minute of him just staring off into space, it became clear he wasn’t going to.

“We could what?”

Gordon flinched before he finally looked back up at Benrey. “Sorry I’m… real fucking tired. I’ll get ready for bed now. Thanks for… thanks.” He shambled over to the closet to pull out his pajamas before heading into the bathroom.

Benrey stared after him for a couple seconds before pulling out his phone. His first instinct was to text Tommy because Tommy knew lots of things about all sorts of stuff. But Tommy wasn’t human and didn’t need to sleep – though he did so every night anyway because he liked to, he was weird like that. Bubby also wouldn’t be a good person to ask when it came to matters related to humans sleeping because even though he was human, he was genetically engineered and thus likely his needs in that area probably weren’t the same as the average human’s. Leaving Coomer as the best person to ask. Presumably he’d once been a normal human before all the cybernetic upgrades, cloning, and whatever else they’d done to him had made him whatever he is now.

‘can humans die if they dont sleep enuf?’ Surely not, that was ridiculous, but Gordon had just implied that it was bad for him to skip sleep and ‘really fucking bad’ if he did so long enough to pass out. The question was how bad? He’d already proven himself not to be trusted when asked about such things though so Benrey had to go elsewhere.

Before Benrey could even finish lowering his phone, it pinged; Coomer’s reply. ‘Yes. Prolonged periods of sleep deprivation can lead to death in most animals, including humans.’

‘really?????’ Coomer had to be messing him, right? How could humans possibly be that weak?

‘Yes, really. Getting a proper night’s rest is essential for one’s health and well being. Most commonly sleep deprivation related deaths are the cause of impaired brain function leading to an accident. Such as a car, or other motorized vehicle, crash. In extreme cases, lack of sleep can lead to organ damage that eventually results in death.’

How was Benrey supposed to keep Gordon alive when something as dumb as not sleeping could kill him? Especially when his dumbass was over here trying to not sleep for multiple nights in a row. What the fuck was wrong with him? … His nightmares must be real bad, huh? Could the nightmares kill him too?

Before he could finish typing out that question to Coomer, Gordon returned. “Do you think you could uh… If you’re planning on hanging out here, if I start acting like I’m having a nightmare, could you wake me up? If you wanna go off and… I don’t know, play on the hotel manager’s computer some more instead, that’s fine too and stuff just…” He trailed off again.

Benrey put his phone away. He’d ask Coomer for more info later. “I’ll wake you.” Even though apparently if he did so too often Gordon could die. Hopefully he wouldn’t have to.

“Thanks. Good night.”

“’Night.”

Gordon shambled over and flopped onto the bed. This time he did remember to take his glasses off beforehand. He forgot to turn off the light though so Benrey did it for him, casting the room into darkness.

With a sigh he turned one of the chairs to face the bed before gathering up the Game Boy bag and sitting down in it. With a little bit of fucking around with the way his eyes worked he should be able to make himself see well enough in the dark to make the Game Boy’s lack of a properly lit screen a non-issue. So between that and texting Coomer for more information about humans’ required sleeping habits, he should have plenty to do to keep himself occupied while he watched over Gordon as he slept.

Ok I found a direction I wanna go with the ghost au- and what pairs best to the supernatural than cults? :D here’s just some rambles about what I have in mind?

So idk if I established this- the pics are probably pretty telling but post car incident Josh now can see ghosts! And that causes some digging and poking around about why this is and Josh eventually stumbles into some shady shit that went down with another kid who could also see ghosts in 1973 (au is in 1998 btw), the kid was considered a “seer” and a cult was formed around this fact.

However the cult thought they could strengthen the kid’s abilities via electroshock therapy, something went wrong, lot of ppl died yada yada BUT Gordon recognizes the kid in the pic as… drumroll… TOMMY! (This ties to Tommy’s ability as a ghost/poltergeist-kinda to absolutely fuck around with lights and electricity- that and his death probably involved a defibrillator? Heart attack so 🤷‍♀️ idk which one I wanna go with)

But as the plot gets deeper, Josh starts getting pursued by what is thought to be the newly regrouped cult who suspect him as a new seer. :))c Ghost dad Gordo tries his best to keep his son safe, even if he can’t do much.

And if we wanna tie Benrey back to this Arden’s in the new cult, which would likely get Ben involved in helping Josh bc 1. ARDEN!! DANGER!! ITS KNOWN THAT THE GUY DOESN’T CARE IF KIDS DIE 2. the two are buddies, and he grows to respect Gordon as the two bond so he’s gotta make sure his cool son is safe.

So! This is a prime opportunity to call hlvrai fans to my thoughts for hl2vrai, with my extended knowledge of the half life LORE

So, we were told half life 2 took place in 2020 in the main timeline, for hlvrai, that’s when the black mesa incident happened-

Hlvrai 1 - 2020

Gordon has been gone for 20 years, he kinda fucked off and didn’t listen to Dr coomer’s request- shame on gordo’s

According to coomer it’s 2040 now, so the 20 years of Gordo gone has passed.

Coomer seems to be recently arriving in city 17, probably to join bubby in the teleport lab

Tommy has been hired into the family business, so he’s probably gonna be our greeter for hl2vrai, like Gman waking up Gordon in half life 2

No clue where benrey is, so he might be gone still, unless Wayne’s pulling a “shit I stole from popular au’s” thing and making benrey possess Barney Calhoun /hj

Alyx and Breen are gonna be important, and I think Kleiner and Eli might be too, given that. But we’ll see come next year

We pray for Holly’s Wi-Fi when it comes out, however

HL2VR:AI ideas and theories????

I wanted to share my theories for the potential characters for HL2-VRAI after the finale of HLAGE came out. Some fancasting too :P (Sorry if it’s messy)

These are fan theories and for fun! Don’t take anything here as official from the RTVS crew :)

I will update this post to include any developments made!

Most of this is based on references to what the original HL2 characters' roles were! Obviously I have no idea how RTVS is going to play all the characters (it’s improv) or who, but I'm gonna try my best.

SPOILERS of course

Gordon/Wayne

As the primary protagonist of the series, Wayne would return to his role as Gordon! or also Wayne! (Why wouldn’t he?)

I’m curious to see if HL2:VRAI is going to lean more into Wayne being the protagonist (like in HLA:GE) or rather his in-game character Gordon? (more in HL:VRAI) 

Also, What motive would a character Wayne have for playing HL2 VR? Especially after the events of HLA:GE, it wouldn’t make much sense for him to put himself in danger without a secondary motive!! maybe hes just a silly streamer though 

G-Man

Like Gordon, G-Man is a key character that doesn’t make sense to recast. Mike will most likely resume the role of G-Man. 

In HLA:GE, Peppa pig talks about her new friends, and it's very likely “the man clothed all in blue” is G-Man, as he is a definite returning character for HL2. 

I’d like to see G-Man be a more prominent character, but I don’t know what his motivation in the sequel could be.

Alyx

As a new character, Alyx has many potential actors:

Lauren, the previous actor of Sunkist, has said she regretted not participating in a larger role, making her a strong candidate for playing Alyx. 

Mira, while not an actor in HL:VRAI, participated as part of the Gnome and Blue Gnome in HLAGE. She is a very good candidate, although it’s unknown(?) if she would seek a large solo role. 

Holly, as the previous actor of Dr. Coomer would be a great candidate. However, because of how big a role Coomer had in HL:VRAI, it is possible she would rather return to a smaller role as Dr. Coomer will most probably not be returning for the sequel.

In the ending of HLA:GE, the three friends mentioned by Peppa could be the series antagonists. 

“The man clothed all in blue” as G-Man or Benrey, “the little man with white beard and red hat” as Gnome and “Someone else, you will meet her very soon.”

Note the use of pronouns (only two key characters in HL2 use she/her,) as well as the shadow of Alyx in the theatre hallway, and her fate (“Tis a shame what befell that girl,”) It’s quite likely Alyx is foreshadowed to be the primary antagonist of HL2:VRAI.

Also, Alyx is never referenced by name, only by Wayne when playing HLA:GE to the Gnome about how he wouldn’t be called “Gordon,” based on the game. The character using the Alyx model could very much be named something else.

Kleiner/Bubby

With Kleiner as the direct HL2 upgrade to Bubby’s model, it is likely that Bubby could return in HL2:VRAI with his actor Gir resuming the role. 

Similarly, it is possible that Kleiner could be used to introduce a new character in reference to the Bubby Prototypes in HL:VRAI. It is equally possible the Kleiner model could be used for an entirely new character unrelated to Bubby, or even not at all.

Barney/Benrey/Skeleton/Emmet Calhoun????

(God, there is a LOT to this one huh…)

Barney being the HL2 update to Benrey’s model and a key character in HL2, it’s possible Benrey could return with Scorpy as his VA. Being the primary antagonist of HL:VRAI, it’s most likely his role would not be as significant.

In HLA:GE, it could be Benrey being referenced as “The Man Clothed all in Blue,” they could return as an unlikely confidant or minor antagonist.

The Skeleton is also possible to return, maybe in place of Benrey, as in the ending of HLVR:AI Benrey’s credits are shown alongside the Skeleton, who is shown to still “haunt” Gordon. 

Having an updated model, it’s very likely the Skeleton could return, either as a separate entity, or in connection with Benrey. 

Additionally, the Barney model could be used for Emmet Calhoun. Emmet is a joke character referenced in the HLVR:AI ACAB (AI Crushes All Banks) stream, as JohnWicklover1994, who Benrey said to be his brother(?) playing on his account. Emmet is also mentioned in HLA:GE by the Gnome. The appearance of Emmet is extremely far-fetched though, as both times he is mentioned he is meant as a gag. 

The Barney model, similarly, could be used for an entirely new character unrelated to Benrey at all, although I’m sure a gag or two would be referenced to their appearance. It might not be used at all too, as Benrey is such a notorious character it would be easier overall to use another model. 

Father Grigori

As a personal casting, I would love to see Bauulp assume Father Grigori and have a similar voice as his original in HL2. As Tommy is assumed to not be returning, I think this would be a great choice as his new role.

other characters we dunno about yet

Character models under this category are quite likely to appear, however, they have not been referenced or have a previous model used in the series.

Dog & Lamarr

As silent characters in HL2, Dog and Lamarr are good candidates for RTVS members or friends of members who do not wish to have a voiced role while still participating in the story.

Gnome

Unfortunately, Gnome’s voice is pronounced dead. Being who he was in HLA:GE, I'm sure he’ll be referenced, and possibly a cameo, even without a voice.

Bauulp

I would love to see Bauulp return as himself, that would be very funny. Not super likely, as HLA:GE was to cement the Gnome being chalked up to a mod but it would be funny. I would laugh.

Wallace Breen

I would love to see Breen played by Erarg. No thoughts behind that I just think Erarg playing a betrayer to humanity would be epic.

Eli Vance

Fuck if i know! This model is probably gonna be used tho

Judith Mossman

This model is very likely to be used. HLVRAI does not pass the bechdel test.

Combine Soldier Character(s)

With lots of models to choose from, a Combine AI could be a fun addition.

Vortigaunt

Same with the Combine! I don’t think this is happening though, might look weird with Garry’s Mod animations.

CHARACTERS that probably wont come back idk man

As Half-Life: 2 does not have HD models of previous characters, it’s very unlikely these characters will be in the sequel unless RTVS has models made specifically for their return. I find doing that highly improbable though, so anything in lieu of these characters will likely just be a reference.

Sunkist

While not a Half-Life model, and still possible within Garry’s Mod, Sunkist’s heavy association with Tommy means there isn’t much use for their return at all. But, with G-Man (Tommy’s father!!) returning, Sunkist has a slim chance to make a cameo.

Dr. Coomer

Tommy Coolatta

Darnold

honestly the only character i sorta want to return would be Darnold, mostly because i wanted to see more of Log's performance of the character. Log could also just play a new character too so eh.

Sunkist does exist in this au and she fucking hates and loves unpleasant. He's her favorite chew toy

As seen above Bubby cannot be trusted around mark solely because given the chance Bubby would set him on fire immediately. Bubby in general should not be trusted around other NPCs he sets shit on fire all the time.

Wallter (and Spud) would be the only people Gordon would actively talk to and consider himself "friends" with. He likes Wallter's general compassion and enjoys Spud's simplicity. Yes this means Gordon would probably gun down Gnarpy but uhhhh don't worry about it.

Gordon would either be afraid of unpleasant or completely indifferent about them no in-between

Benrey would in fact abuse their sweet voice all of the time. Especially to fuck with people. He'd probably shoot pest with blue sweet voice all the time just to calm him down (and then after a bit get absolutely decked by pest)

Coomer would try to suplex MR. He just would.

Tommy would see prototype trying to gather information and proceed to infodump to them about OSHA and its regulations.

Bive would fucking hate the science team they are so strange and came out of nowhere and obviously spying on her and are part of the clown militia (they are not, and Coomer would try to reassure her but then the Hello Gordon! Kicks in and freaks her out even more I'm so sorry girly)

HLAGE FINALE SPOILERS

Alright alright I know nobody cares but I wanted to put my thoughts down so I'd be able to say "I told you so" if I'm right which i'm probably not BUT

I think the reason the gnome had so much power of the real world is because Wayne broke the 4th wall so much while talking to him. In HLVRAI Wayne makes little to no mention of the world outside the game, it's mainly coomer that acknowledges the 4th wall, and so Benrey has no effect on the world outside the game. Maybe

ALSO I think there's someone behind this. At the beginning of the first HLVRAI stream I believe he says Valve themselves sent him the "experimental copy" of Half-life but in the description for the videos it says he "discovered" it, and in the description for HLAGE Episode 1 it says that Wayne was linked a workshop page for the gnome, and goes on to say that Gabe Newell himself told people not to mod the code of the Gnome Run due to the "Myth". This is a new edit since the finale released too, and due to it's insistence on nobody else EVER playing the true Gnome Run, I don't believe whoever linked this mod to Wayne was just some random hacker.

The intelligence of the gnome is another matter. One thing that Benrey and the Gnome have in common is that, as Wayne gets nearer to the end of the game they become more and more reluctant to continue. Benrey doesn't want to hurt Gordon, or at least part of him doesn't, and the Gnome insists that they need to stop and go back repeatedly in the final act of HLAGE, but once Wayne reaches the Peppa Pig Movie (jesus christ I love all this bullshit) the gnome's tone is quite different, obviously leading to Wayne getting Gnomified. But during the Gnome's musical number he yet again sings a different tune, so to speak. I believe the combine did take his memories of his and Gordon's time together. We see him warming up to Gordon and some real character growth in the final act, but once Wayne makes his way through the vault the Gnome seems to be back to his old, derogatory way of speaking. As for the musical number i'm not quite sure, but perhaps seeing gnomified wayne and being in wayne's shoes causes him to change his mind and remember what they had together.

The person creating these mods is still a mystery, but if we connect this to the greater RTVSCU there are a few options. Tucker, the creator of the I. M. MEEN disc for example (not sure about this bit) not only shows the skills that he would need to do something like this, given Meen's AI and the ending, and he would know where Wayne lives, making him an actual threat. Wayne also breaks the 4th wall numerous times during the stream, which supports my previous theory. Of course, that doesn't answer how Wayne escaped from The Shining painting at the end, but this part of the theory is flimsy so it's fine. The most powerful AI character we've ever seen however, is Homer. The fact that this man constantly gets kidnapped by fictional characters is amazing to me. I'd have to rewatch the Simpsons stream, but I believe this metric of power could be important.

TL;DR Wayne breaking the 4th wall may have effects on the power of the self aware AI, somebody has got to be behind the Half Life AI mods, and this could extend into the entire RTVSCU as a whole
