Painter Of The Night: The reality of nightmare (podcast/video)
#야화첩 #夜画帳 #seungkyum #PainterOfTheNight #potn #PintorNocturno The essay about #Yoonseungho and #JungInhun "The reality of nightmare (podcast/video)" is finished. Feel free to comment. I hope you'll like it. Retweet/like it as a support. Thanks.
Please support the authors by reading the manhwas on the official websites. This is where you can read the manhwa Painter Of The Night. But be aware that this manhwa is a mature Yaoi, which means, it is about homosexuality with explicit scenes. If you want to read more essays, here is the link to the table of contents of Painter Of The Night. It would be great if you could make some…

POTN Ramblings
CW: abuse, rape, childhood abuse, homophobia
POTN experts on Tumblr anyone? What is the tonic that Seungho needs to consume regularly, and then what is it for? I am guessing the "disease" they keep talking about is being attracted to men. But I was wondering if the tonic keeps causing delirious fits and insomnia.
Also, I am still not clear about what happened in Seungho's childhood. He was beaten, and forced to watch others have sex by his own father and Lord Song. But I think it's implied he was also molested. I can guess that but I think the servant Kim is the one who told Elder Yoon about Seungho kissing another boy, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He already looking unhinged even as a child tho but I am gonna say that's just Seungho's face 😭
Also, Kim was shocked to see how Seungho was beaten up after he was locked in the shed. Idk why Seungho was on a mat tho?? I guess it's implied he got the same punishment Nakyum almost got in the initial chapters when Seungho thought he ruined the painting. But I thought that kind of punishment was only for the low-born class.
I don't think Seungho'e father knows that he was actually molested by Lord Song or his minions, otherwise, he wouldn't work with Song later too. Elder Yoon only knows about the fucked up "conversion therapy" part.
Kim stayed with Seungho out of guilt but I can't blame him. He couldn't have known his single complain to Elder Yoon would result in so much torture for Seungho. And he did try to help Nakyum as much as he could from Seungho's rage and madness. I feel so bad for him.
Painter of the night is such a tragic saga of the cycle of abuse, manipulation, homophobia, classism, and obsession. I even hesitate to call what Seungho and Nakyum have as love. It started so bad....Nakyum has always been a strong character, even in the face of Seungho's abuse.
Tumblr media
Even when he is trembling , scared shirtless, he will still call out Seungho's bullshit. He will defend In Hun when Seungho calls his poetry derivative. He defends his Noonas when Seungho calls them names. He even tried to protect dokjae or whatever that servant's name was that was working with the nameless jester. Most the things he did for Seungho, only to protect Jung In Hun. And when In Hun left him heartbroken, insultingly calling him a whore, Nakyum gave up fighting. Deciding to just stay as Seungho's boy toy. I am not a psychologist but this just screams STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, right? Even though in the end, so much genuine affection and care bloomed between them, you know, what Nakyum feels could be his own mind breaking and "falling in love" with Seungho to cope with the sexual and physical abuse.
Heena also points out the same. I am not saying Nakyum has NO desire towards Seungho, be it emotional or physical desires. From day 1, Nakyum did find Seungho at the very least physically attractive. He draws out of passion, almost driven by instinct, and he drew Seungho with a lot of detail. But the power dynamic is so dangerous here that until the last the moment when I saw that Seungho was ready to leave Nakyum with his Noonas in Kisaeng House, I wasn't sure if the "love" they have can even get enough fresh air to bloom, surrounded by so much miasma of Seungho's initial abuse towards Nakyum. Until that point, I wasn't sure if what Seungho feels is only obsession or is there love mixed in there too. All the gentleness, tenderness, protection and comfort Seungho gave Nakyum until that point, I found myself thinking: this could very well be coz he feels like he owns Nakyum right? But his willingness to leave Nakyum, even figuratively bowing in front of Heena to make sure Nakyum remains safe felt like something akin to selfless love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even then...even now....I hesitate to call it love. In a way, this is some-what of a gothic love story, I guess. Like Dracula and Mina. Seungho has lived most of his life wanting to torment and punish his father, his primary abuser. In the end, he bowed down to his father, promising to be under him, be his puppet, to do whatever it takes if it means Elder Yoon can rescue Nakyum from death row. When Seungho was bowing down to his father, it made me feel so angry LMAO I really hope Seungho actually slowly poisoned his dad. OMG my own daddy issues gonna go wild 😭 ok, ok...
And Seungho himself did realise along the way how he was becoming what he hated the most. How he was hurting Nakyum again and again. Once more, Kim plays a pivotal role, when he made Seungho realise what he was doing to Nakyum, showing him a mirror to his own actions. Heena, too, unknowingly made Seungho see how much pain and misfortune he has brought to the one he feels like he has fallen in love with. Nakyum too never hesitated in telling what he wants in their relationship. And that he will leave if Seungho starts being all demonic again. How interesting that the only ones who could actually force Yoon Seungho, a powerful noble, to see what a monster he has become were the so-called lower class people: a house servant, a low-born painter and a kisaeng.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have read a lot of manga and manhwa with the typical "toxic yaoi" pipeline story but for some reason...this one. This one. It just...it has me a chokehold. Painter of the Night has left bruises in my heart. So odd, a story about obsessive love has me obsessed with it.
It is not often that I come across stories that feel like they are driven completely by a deep, hidden, raw emotion threatening to explode; a story of visceral obsession, so frightening, you feel it will suffocate you and you will welcome it.

I have so many thoughts about the season 3 ending of potn and I figured you would enjoy them. 1. In-hun is alive. (It was a former servant's body they found in the well and Min was lying to Na-Kyum to get him to break. Also, while Min was pleading for his life he asked if Seungho wanted to know where he got In-hun's glasses from) 2. Min and gang killed Heena (You can see them put a bag and rope over her head when Na-Kyum is brought unconscious to Min, idk if anyone saw that. Rip queen, you were our only named female character) 3. Na-Kyum learned some tricks from his noonas (not Heena) because when he gave Seungho head that last time he surprised Seungho and it was good. 4) I also dont believe Seungho was intending to kill any of them (he left Jihwa alive) until he saw Na-Kyum all bloody and unconscious. Oh, and I love the growth Seungho had from first telling Na-Kyum he couldnt apologize due to their social standing after finding out he had been kidnapped the first time but how he would make it up to him to apologizing for not coming sooner to save him (with tears!) I just needed to get that out there because I am losing my mind how did I miss them the first read through
Thanks for your comments Anon!
First... I 150% agree with you that that Dry Twat Inhun is alive. Shit floats, and that one is a log...
Narratively, killing Inhun off at this point in this story wouldn’t make sense. Seungho and Nakyum are at a point in their interactions where they are in no doubt as to their feelings for each other.
This debacle with Min may or may not add pressure to those feelings. My guess is it will immediately strengthen it... but to provide grist and drama for another season, we will need a much more delicate emotional assault on the fortress of SeungKum’s love.
I think if and when we do see Jackass Inhun again, his current placement, whether as a ranked official in the government, or someone with less power and desperate in some way, will influence the nature of the drama.
Will it be Inhun or Daddy Yoon as the final boss in this story? Or maybe both battles must be fought simultaneously?
Regarding Seungho’s murderous intentions: I absolutely think Seungho meant to kill someone over Nakyum in that room. He went there prepared to do whatever, and murder was and is the least of his moral concerns.
This story started with a casual murder.
Jihwa escaped Seungho’s Sword for the sole reason that they were childhood friends, former lovers and Jihwa told him where Nakyum was.
But slicing off Jihwa’s topknot is as good as death for someone like Jihwa. Possibly worse in terms of prospects, but it is definitely Seungho being merciful.
In my chapter log for this episode E101 “Limb By Limb” wrote:
In Joseon Korea, a topknot signified manhood and adulthood. Regardless of age, the topknot symbolised you taking a man's part in your family, and all the privileges it afforded. It usually happened around the age a young man married, but it could be bestowed at any age. It is a symbol of the nobility to be sure, but it was a greater symbol of adult privilege and allowed your ancestors to recognise and bless you.
Seungho cutting Jihwa's topknot, cuts him off from all of that. It removes Jihwa publicly and no doubt privately from his family's respect and regard as an adult, the grace and protection of his ancestors and the privilege of nobility in a society that prized the male top-knot's symbolism almost above all others.
This story started with a casual murder.
With Seungho’s high state of agitation and emotional distress, the mere fact he was able to leave Jihwa alive, is a testament to his growth and the changes in him.
This is as merciful as Seungho was ever willing to be with anyone who stole Nakyum or had a hand in it. And while it was clear that Jihwa did not steal Nakyum, no fool, Seungho knew Jihwa was involved if he knew where to find Nakyum and his name was being used as a front.
So that’s why Seungho’s mercy left Jihwa breathing and without access to his privileged world.
But to have found Nakyum battered, bruised... sexual assaulted; in a situation he himself knew too well... naked and forced to endure the licentious whims of captors, it would have triggered every instinct in him. .. Everyone there had to get it, regardless the depths of their culpability.
Just to be sure, he crept up on them and heard all their doings. And Seungho is not normally a restrained, measured man, known for controlling his anger, no one was coming out of there besides he and Nakyum.
And that’s why I disagree with your assertion that he never went there to kill anyone.
He went there with his sword open... and that is a declaration for anyone trained to use one or defend against one.
With regards to the changes in Seungho, I assert in my log for E102 “Frozen Tracks of My Tears”:
Seungho's redemption is one of the best stories I've read... regardless of genre.
Because this is a tale about Seungho and his redemption. Hear me out!
While we get Seungho’s story in flashbacks and indirectly, Seungho is the only character without a real point of view. He is always viewed and described, filtered by and cast against the backdrop of others. We never really know what he’s thinking or feeling unless he directly tells someone.
But this story is ABOUT SEUNGHO. Everyone else in the story serves his character’s growth and arc of redemption.... we think of him as a rescuer, but Nakyum and he rescued each other. We think of him as wicked and debauched, and Nakyum as pure. But as we are seeing, and I have written from my earliest logs, Nakyum is just as broken and fractured as Seungho... just as lost when they met. Nakyum isn’t that pure, just because he was a virgin, and Seungho not that irredeemable, just because he lacks filters and restraints.
Final note... I do wonder about Heena. If she was dead, or sold off to somewhere else, or still unconscious under a sack somewhere? I think it would hurt Nakyum to know Heena was killed in this way, but he would unequivocally know Seungho was not involved... and Seungho would comfort him in his grief.
But, I’m still holding out a little hope for Heena... just like that jackass Lord who fell asleep in the snow, she may be knocked out somewhere unconscious and awaiting the descent of the authorities.
** fingers crossed even though she a damn busybody **
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me... I agree with much, and I’ve explained my disagreements. Do come and share with me again.,.. and feel free to disagree with me too! I love a respectful debate about plotting and metaphors.

Truth be told, the second I saw the messenger in Chapter 80...
Tumblr media
My mind instantly went back to this panel in Chapter 69, all due to the colour of his Hanbok.
Tumblr media
We don’t know yet for sure who’s that fellow behind the curtain and I am aware the clothes are slightly different and there’s the absence/presence of beads.
They could be two different people. It’s possible too, that it’s nothing more than a random scene. Let’s just wait and see.
While we are here, I am still wondering why on earth did Heena sent Nakyum away in the first place? And now she’s so determined to bring him back to the very place he was forced to leave? I can’t brain.
Tumblr media
I shook my head so hard the moment I read the part where she was so quick to assume Nakyum had been kidnapped (she’s not completely wrong here though, her brother was just back from almost being killed for some petty reason) and not once she’s ever questioned the whereabouts and character of that “learned” sir she admires so much.
Tumblr media
Some say she’s doing this out of concern of Nakyum’s safety and well-being, but PFFT, where the hell was Heena when Nakyum was wandering around town drunk and lonely and homeless? And that’s been going on for months?!
She didn’t bother looking for him then, so why now? What’s she trying to do really? To be seen as a kind, caring person? Give me a break.
And yeah, the other part that pisses me off big time was how quickly she changed the subject the moment Nakyum answered her question, matter-of-factly, that she’s the one who asked him not to go back. Jeez!

two sides of the same coin
BD said they met when seungkyum was little. BD drew a few spoiler panels on yt live today and in the panels she drew, seungkyum was in the same kiseang house. lord song was sitting on seungho and talking to a kisaeng (probably heena).
idon't know whose point of view it is but another knot in my mind has been untied. i thought about this panel for a long time, but now I'm sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he seungho and possibly his father forcibly brought kisaeng to his home for cure/fix and forced him to have seggs with women. this is part of lord song's own treatment, which he chose to refuse to go to the shaman the doctor recommended to him.
seungkyum's pasts are like two sides of the same coin. it's so tragic because seungho was just screaming for help while nakyum grew up believing the nobles were evil when he saw the noble kicking his noona at the door.
fate did not pity them again while bringing these two innocent children together.
it's so tragic, same place different points of view. nakyum stands by the door crying and sees a noble tormenting his noona and grows up believing that nobles are terrible people. but seungho only cries for help and tries to run away from what they want him to do
and yes, this is seungkyum's first met in the past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while nakyum was safe with inhun, the moon was following them. but seungho was forcibly brought back in and the assulted, which was probably the last part of lord song's plan, took place.
"the animals, dogs and chickens do.." 'it's the cure for what they call it.
Tumblr media
i believe heena knows too much about seungho's past. if it's kisaeng heena kicked by the nobleman and lord song asks him to have seggs with seungho for a 'fix', the two must be the same age.
the tragic stories of the two sides of the same coin make this story even more interesting.

Thoughts on Painter of the Night Chapters 77-94.
I think the story in these chapters were a little more disjointed. Nakyum and Seungho would have disagreements but they were “resolved” pretty quickly. I put resolved in quotation marks because technically they got over their differences but it wasn’t as satisfying as we may want. I’m not sure if this was Byeonduck’s intention.
For example, Nakyum told Seungho that he wanted to know more about him, and Seungho told him that he overstepped. Nakyum got upset and he was preparing to leave until they were interrupted by a visit from Lord Yoon. Afterwards, Nakyum just kind of decided on his own that he wouldn’t leave anymore, and that he would acquiesce to Seungho’s request for him to simply stay by his side. I guess Nakyum did technically learn more about Seungho through Mr. Kim and through eavesdropping on the conversation between Seungho and Lord Yoon. I can accept that Nakyum realized that Seungho didn’t have an easy life, and he wanted to stay with him and provide him company even if he couldn’t do anything else. I guess I was just not so satisfied because I don’t think that Seungho acknowledges why Nakyum wanted to know more about him. He isn’t opening up; Seungho does have a tough life, but in the context of their one-on-one relationship, Nakyum is doing all of the heavy lifting. I’m just hoping for Seungho to meet him in the middle.
Just a note on the music box. It is a symbol of Seungho’s love for Nakyum, in a time when Seungho himself is unable to express his love. So when Nakyum says that he doesn’t want the music box, he is rejecting Seungho. As for Seungho, he throws the box away, which I think shows us in turn his own devotion to Nakyum. These feelings that he has are for Nakyum only and no one else. If Nakyum won’t accept his love, he won’t give his love to anyone else.
Once again, we do see Seungho behaving more softly and kindly towards Nakyum, which is delicious. He plays with him, teases him, etc. And to be honest, he’s quite tolerant towards Nakyum who speaks his mind in front of him. Towards these set of chapters, Seungho took Nakyum out to have fun, even if he doesn’t totally approve of Nakyum’s idea of fun. I was so surprised that Seungho took Nakyum to the kisaeng house. I really think Seungho is starting to soften up.
Now, what is the deal between Heena and Seungho? We know that Heena is suspicious of him, and to her credit, she has reason to be. Near the beginning of Nakyum’s stay at Seungho’s manor, he was NOT treated well. Now, Nakyum is staying with him of his own volition, but Seungho’s defensive nature has not changed to the world. I think he’s been intercepting all of Heena’s letters. But as mentioned, Seungho has softened now that he realizes that Nakyum is staying with him of his own volition, against the warnings of Heena. Perhaps his decision to take Nakyum to the kisaeng house was also for his own benefit, to show Nakyum’s other noonas that Nakyum is happy with Seungho, and that plan kind of works with the two noonas that Nakyum was speaking with. They felt that Seungho was nothing like what Heena described. In Heena’s defence, this was a recent development. The noonas asked Nakyum and Seungho to stay the night so that Nakyum could see Heena and Seungho agreed, so I wonder if Seungho is really trying to show everybody that he can take care of Nakyum, that Heena has nothing to worry about again.
In Chapter 94, Nakyum basically confessed to Seungho, telling him that he didn’t think of Inhun anymore when he looked at the moon, and that he now saw Seungho. Good for him ToT
I read this manhwa in spurts, so I really don’t remember what it was that Inhun said to Nakyum that Seungho overheard. I can only imagine that it was something negative. I do remember Inhun not actually caring much about Nakyum, but perhaps only using Nakyum’s fondness for him to get Seungho to sponsor his examinations.
At the end of chapter 94, I thought that the person who was drowned was actually Heena so I was super afraid. In fact, Seungho had been near the well when Nakyum asked him to come with him to the pond. We saw snippets of Seungho’s conversation with Heena before, basically telling/threatening her not to bother Nakyum anymore. So I was really afraid that Seungho had taken the opportunity to visit the kisaeng house to kill Heena DX And then Nakyum would absolutely hate him, and then do all the emotional labour to make them okay again DX
But going by the comments, everybody says it’s Inhun who’s died. I’m guessing it was because of the hat on the body. I’m actually really surprised that Inhun would show up dead. I thought that Inhun would come back to Seungho and Nakyum to stir up conflict, but that Nakyum would finally pick a side and choose Seungho over Inhun. But I guess Byeonduck has chosen another path to explore the angst lol.
According to the comments, Seungho had ordered Inhun killed. Some say it’s because Inhun said bad things about Nakyum, but I wonder if it was because Seungho had still seen Inhun as a rival for Nakyum’s affections. Again, it’s been a while so I can’t say whether this is true or not (whether Seungho ordered the kill, and his reasons for doing so if he did). But I can see the conflict that will arise. If Nakyum thinks that Seungho is responsible, he will undoubtedly hate him for a while. As he confessed to Seungho, he still had fond memories with Inhun even if he no longer loved him. And the confession would have meant that Seungho had ordered Inhun’s death for no reason (if he did order it). Dun dun dunnnn.

"Master Yoon has changed. Since that night, he hasn't said anything awful."
Tumblr media
"He doesn't even call me to his chambers at night."
Tumblr media
"Instead, he comes to dine with me, for every meal. From time to time, he brings me treats and smokes a pipe. Sometimes, he asks me if I wanna take a puff."
Tumblr media
"And sometimes, he visits me...only to sit by my side, and gaze at me. And every once in a while...he will give me a kiss, nothing more, before leaving. Just that, and nothing more."
Tumblr media
P.S. - Basically, Nakyum is wondering what happened to your libido hehe
On a serious note, Yoon Seungho finally realizes he has become like his father, and even beyond that, worse than his father...that thought finally smacked some conscience in his brain. He is changing but he is still Seungho. Which is why, Nakyum still won't open his heart to him. And Heena's warning, still rings true in Nakyum's mind.
Tumblr media
"Noona is right. It's a mistake, a fleeting emotion that will fade away."
"Not only that. I am sure master Yoon feels the same. He is a fickle man, quick to move on to new interests.
Tumblr media
In a way, Heena's warning was correct. Nakyum almost died because he was targeted by Seungho's enemies. Which is why, it's almost poetic how the only way Seungho was able to save him...was by choosing to kneel down in front of his abuser, his father, offering his servitude to the one he despised the most.
"It is precisely...because you are nothing...that your plaything will pay the price with his life."
Tumblr media
"I swear to live as you command."
"From this moment on, I shall not bring any further shame to your name. I pledge to be the honorable, upstanding son that you always wanted."
Tumblr media
"I beg of you, father. Spare the boy's life and you'll have all the leverage you desire to do with me as you wish."
"You'll have me as a willing servant for the rest of my days."
Tumblr media
The fact that the only way he could ensure Nakyum's safety...Nakyum, the man he loved the most and also the man he hurt and abused the most, was by bowing down and begging for help from his own biggest abuser, his father... Thinking about it really breaks my mind a little. That Seungho had finally reached the point where he willingly swallows his past enmity, his ego, his past pain to protect and, in a way to repent, for his own sins...I really like that about this story.

SO MUCH CHAOS in one chapter, I love it. It’s this very expression that made Seungho realize that he became the tormentor to Nakyum that his father was to him. Nakyum had the same look in his eyes that Seungho did when his father locked him away. Throughout this entire story, Seungho would always act first and deal with the rest later. He’s paying the price now, filled with guilt and regret. It’s so. fucking. satisfying.
Even MM told Nakyum that he feels bad for him and how he is at the mercy of all of these shitty nobles. This panic attack was long overdue for Nakyum after constantly living under their abuse and unpredictable natures. After seeing Nakyum’s nervous breakdown, Seungho knew Min was telling the truth about the kidnapping. He allowed Heena Noona to stay because he feels unworthy of comforting Nakyum (as he should). He became a source of pain for Nakyum - the person he’s supposed to love and protect. His impulsive and obsessive behavior was shameful and he knows it. Although it would be painful to see, a true selfless act of love from Seungho would be allowing Nakyum the option to leave, for the sake of Nakyum’s mental health and happiness. I am humbly asking BD to make the next chapter (after the special episode) about Seungho groveling and shedding fat tears because he needs to beg and plead for Nakyum’s forgiveness.
Can we also talk about how Min is literally the puppet master of this whole shit show? He’s the one who told Jihwa to kill Nakyum, he uses Seungho, Nakyum & Jihwa as pawns in a game for entertainment, and he feels no empathy for anyone or anything. All of the misery that occurred is thanks to Min. Seungho knows Min is sus though since he’s always holding his bby extra close whenever Min is around 😂

Remember how we've been asking for Nakyum to have a best friend or at least someone he could talk to and rely on? But instead, BD gave us Heena, Nakyum's sister and I think that's more than what we actually asked. She's a strong woman with a better capability probably as I could assume by the last 2 chapters (CH65-66) than any ordinary lady in Joseon. She's known Nakyum longer than anyone else, and truly and sincerely loved him and cared for him.
After hearing the truth, Seungho has finally realized how essential and significant it is for Nakyum to have Heena by his side specially right now. Although he stayed by Nakyum's side all night taking care of him and brooding over his guilt and the facts at hand 'coz he finally knew he fucked up big time. He knew he couldn't provide Nakyum the comfort that he needs right now. NOT HIM. 'Coz other than Jihwa and Nameless, he also did him wrong. Letting Heena stay by Nakyum's side after him is a sign of Seungho acknowledging the fact that there are some things he couldn't provide Nakyum. That Nakyum needs other people too.
That hug in that last panel says a hundred thousand words. Although Heena doesn't know the truth it's like she's trying to tell Nakyum, "It's been hard on you. I'm sorry you have to go all through this. I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you. Noona is truly sorry, Nakyum-ah."

Chapter 65: This is Heena noona's world, and we're just living in it
This chapter was also pain, so we're starting off 2021 beautifully already _:(´ཀ`」 ∠):_
Tumblr media
I was really excited for Mr. Kim to go look for more info on what happened, and he eventually gave up. I was disheartened by that fact but then realized their reasonings are so valid, and realistic. Like in life, most people do want to be good and they do want to help people. But then there are forces stronger, more powerful than them that prevent them from doing good, out of fear, out of self-preservation. And that's a sad reality but it's... well, real. So I completely understand why they couldn't help Nakyum more, as they had no powers and could very well be harmed or even die under Seungho's hands if they spoke up.
Tumblr media
Now this. This hurts.
In chapter 46, Nakyum still has his innocence. Despite terrible things had happened to him before, he was still optimistic and pure, childlike as he built this tiny snowman that resembled him. And now that snowman is just a mishapened lump on the ground. One of its arms missing, like one of his wrists were broken. His spirit and his positivity were crushed and swept off.
But it has not disappeared. It is still there.
I'm holding out hope that with enough time and love and healing, Nakyum will be able to rebuild his "snowman".
Especially with how we saw a glimpse of the defiant Nakyum we knew in the first season.
Tumblr media
The one who gritted and yelled at Seungho how he hated him so much he could die, who slapped Seungho's hand away, who reached for his belonging and knocked a noble's hat over.
And according to Heena noona:
Tumblr media
...one who also despised nobles and wasn't afraid to voice it to people around him. He might have seen a lot of sketchy, scummy nobles in his childhood who treated his sisters shittily, and he might have wanted to stand up for them and fight back. He seems to have such a strong spirit, but was advised otherwise lest they got in trouble with the authority.
That defiant young man's still in there, just a little scared and traumatized to come out properly. It's heartwarming that what spurred this glimpse of the old him to resurface is his protectiveness of his sister, I'd imagine this feeling is something familiar from his childhood. He has a big heart and a strong soul, and they need not to be damaged in order to thrive.
Tumblr media
Noona has been here 1.2 episodes and she's already the best character. Social etiquette? She don't know her. Respect for nobles? 'Bah!', she spits on it as she wears her "Eat the rich" croptop under her dress. We stan a queen who kicks down patriarchy's door and yells at its face.
Anyway, Seungho doesn't get told off very often so I'm cherishing this moment while it lasts.
Tumblr media
Motherfucker looks so tired, it's been like two days since his fever also, may I remind you. I hope she's giving you migraine, you sonofabitch.
Tumblr media
That wrist is never gonna be able to heal huh? I wince just thinking about the tension that band has on his broken wirst. Urgh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's definitely having a panic attack here as he's reminded of his kidnapping. Goddammit, Seungho.
If I was a witch, I'd put a curse on Seungho to have a goddamn migraine all day everyday. The only way to break the curse is to crawl on his knees before Nakyum and goddamn apologize for everything. Everything. And mean it.
Tumblr media
Also, one interesting thing to note when Seungho was threatening to kill noona. He admitted he wanted to kill her, and then also admitted he wouldn't do it for Nakyum's sakes. Restrain himself "A hundred times over"??? I'm really surprised he was willing to admit that verbally, to Nakyum. W-Why? I'd think he's be closed off and would hold his threat to harm his sister over Nakyum's head to keep him in check. But no. He admitted that he cared about him way too much to do that. Are these words going through to Nakyum? Or is he too freaked out right now to fully absorb it?
.... Hả?
I am really reeling from this one line, what the hell...

I love how Byeonduck expresses her ideas through drawing and dialog
Tumblr media
It’s amazing to see how NK makes excuses for himself. First he pretends he can't. He implies that he doesn't have a choice.
Tumblr media
He doesn’t dare to tell her the truth. Moreover, he himself does not dare to admit the truth. We can't see her eyes because I think the author wants us to put ourselves in Heena's place.
Tumblr media
First he looks for excuses. He starts with the reason that matters least to him. It's also the one Hoona is most willing to hear…Since a few chapters NK speaks more. He becomes more talkative, he regains the use of speech. But look how he always stumbles on the first syllable as soon as he lies ahaha.
Tumblr media
Look also at how he avoids talking about himself in the first person. He doesn't want to talk about his feelings. IT’S all right, not I'M all right.
Tumblr media
Oh this argument reminds me of something... it's also what he said to the head maid when he explained to her why he wasn't trying to run away anymore. It was just before he confessed to himself that Seungho was a good reason to stay.
Now he is trying another excuse: he doesn't have to stay here. In fact, he's pretty good at it, isn't he? Slowly, he approaches the subject of SH ahah
Tumblr media
NK has exhausted his stock of excuses. NK asserts himself for real there. He raises his voice (hasn't it been a long time?). Finally he puts some emotion into it. HE WANTS TO STAY HERE.
Tumblr media
HE’s just not all right. IT’s just not all right. HE’s REALLY right HERE
Tumblr media
Oh it's so good to see someone listening and taking care of our NK.
Tumblr media
And finally, when we get to the REAL reason, Byeonduck decides to reveal the NK's face. Since NK lists his reasons, the author decides not to show us his face. We have a series of panels where we can't see NK's expressions. Panel on the door, panel from afar where the features of his face are not drawn...
I think it's because NK doesn't want to say the real reason. He doesn't want to show how emotionally involved he is. He doesn't want to admit it to himself or to Noona?
Tumblr media
NK doesn't start by explaining his feelings. He starts with what SG told him first. Not what SG feels, but what SG says. He still can't believe it.
SG told him that, everyone says that... really NK can't believe it. And that's quite normal because SG is really hard to follow and especially he mistreats NK.
Tumblr media
NK is so lost in his feelings… His reason tells him to run away but his heart simply cannot. He is so confused in what he feels. He shouldn't love Seungho. So why is this the case?? That's what NK says. It doesn't make sense.
And here we really have a written statement in black and white. Even if NK expresses it in his own way. He says it indirectly. In any case, he doesn't clearly say "I LIKE HIM".
He is thinking about him. He CONTINUES to think about him. It seems that he has already thought about it.
Tumblr media
As this image illustrates this episode. It expresses everything that needs to be remembered about NK's situation.
The two opposing bubbles as in his mind where he is torn in two. The contradiction of his feelings "I DO NOT WANT TO LOVE HIM" / "BUT I DO OOPS”
Noona's hands frame NK's face. Until then she was holding his hands as if to help him in a practical way, to help him escape. Now she is helping him in his introspection. She holds his face, where all the emotions are expressed, in her two hands, as if to take care of his emotional health.
This is the first time we have had such a clear zoom on NK's state of mind and his feelings towards SG.
Then at the end Heena takes nk's hands. As if she was telling him to regain consciousness, stop dreaming and come back to earth. He has to act. He has to run away. He has no other choice.
Tumblr media
THE crucial question we all ask ourselves. If Byeonduck wants to develop a consistent relationship between SG and NK, Byeonduck is obliged to make NK ask itself this question.
Noona's role here: to make NK think about his feelings, to make him take a step back. For the moment NK and SG have always avoided thinking about the meaning of their relationship. There is a huge accumulation of unspoken words.
Heena asks the question bluntly. She wants NK to explore his feelings. Does he really love Seungho? because still, it's confusing in his head.
Especially after what NK just went through! Too bad things happen since a good ten episode...
And THANK YOU KIM too. From the beginning he is a coward and now he dares to talk to SG. He finally shows courage. I never thought that Kim was a bastard, I understand his cowardice even if I don't agree with him. I find his reaction completely normal. He has little power and has been under the control of a violent and unstable master for years. I understand his reluctance to act.
I think SG and KN will distance themselves from this and reflect on how they both feel and then come together. Maybe it's even Min who will bring them together. Min continues to play his role as a catalyst ahah. Let's hope it doesn't all end tragically!

For those who still think Seungho would be put on trial and heavily punished for having one of his servants found in a public well
Seungho won't go to jail for that.
Tumblr media
Slaves back then were not considered human, they were labelled as objects or property of their masters. It's no different from throwing a piece of paper if you're done writing or if you made a mistake on it
So technically, these officers had no right to arrest Seungho for finding out one of his servants had been killed. In Seungho's defense, "That dude ran away on his own. That shit's not my concern." Seungho's in the right here.
Nobles had the right to dispose of their servants if they were disobedient, and no authorities would pay attention to that, because the servant had been a property of the master
Things would change had that been In-Hun's corpse, however, as Shithun is a scholar albeit not well-known, and it would also be even more complicated if it had been found out that In-Hun had passed the first round of exams
Seeing as Heena had been the one who pointed the finger at Seungho and had most likely told the authorities about him, it could also mean that Min was the one with Heena when the authorities found out about the corpse
This is why the officer is keeping mum for the meantime, as this case now involves another nobleman. Let's say this officer knows of Seungho's reputation and temper--then what of it?
The officer is staying silent so the scandal wouldn't blow out of proportion. Because if Seungho found out that Min had been the "whistleblower", then it would devolve into chaos between two clans, the Mins and the Yoons
A mistake of the child is the reflection of the family, and Joseon was all about collective punishment.
If Seungho retaliates against Min, Min's family would know of this, and would fight back. But would Yoon Chang-Hyeon do the same for Seungho? Of course not. For all we know, Seungho's dead in his father's eyes. Seungwon is the apple of his eye now
So, the house of Yoon and the house of Min would be at each other's necks if Seungho gets wind of this, and the whole village would be dragged down as well
Nameless, the very guy who should be blamed for throwing that damn corpse in the well, has still to appear. He has been lurking in the shadows for far too long, and I think once this case is blown out in the open, he'll realize he made another mistake--he shouldn't have put the blame on Yoon Seungho, as now the man would be rampaging trying to find the real culprit along with searching for Na-Kyum
Which brings me to that one picture BD had drawn in one of her livestreams: of Seungho riding a horse.
This makes me think that this time, instead of having the servants find Na-Kyum, he'll search all over the village to find Na-Kyum himself, but how would he react if he goes to In-Hun's house and sees the blood fountain inside?
Pretty sure he had already read about this through Heena's letters, so I don't think he would completely react like how he did during the kidnapping arc and assume that was Na-Kyum's blood
Another thing that Seungho could do is to march straight back to the kisaeng house and search for Heena and demand him where Na-Kyum is, but that would risk his reputation going to shreds in front of the other noonas, so I doubt he would go there, unless he really doesn't care about his reputation anymore
If we go back to the kidnapping arc, during Na-Kyum's disappearance, Nameless had already popped into the scene, and in c98, hints of his identity of being the man who threw Deok-Jae in the well is now in the open
Which means that in the final scene of c98, we can expect Nameless to be around the corner as well,
Tumblr media
But the thing is, he had already told Min he would not participate, and then Min retaliated that he'd have Nameless killed, right? 👀
So. What if. AND I'M SAYING WHAT IF. WHAT IF NAMELESS HAD BEEN THE ONE WHO KILLED THIS MYSTERY "PERSON" IN SHITHUN'S HOME?
Because I still think that's not a person's blood. That's gotta be animal blood, ffs. Remember that Nameless is literally A BUTCHER.
So. Nameless didn't agree to go and kill some random dude, right. So he resorts to getting animal blood instead and made this scene look like a murder, just like how he did with making Na-Kyum look like he was trying to escape to the mountains After then, he'd be off the hook, right? Right?
Tumblr media
NAH, BITCH. THIS SNAKE WILL POP IN AND POINT ALL THE FINGERS AT NAMELESS. MIN WOULD PROBABLY STATE THAT HE WAS SCAVENGING FOR SCRAPS AND SAW AN ABANDONED HOUSE AND WAS PROBABLY UNAWARE THAT IT WAS INHABITED BY A GLASSES-WEARING HOMOPHOBE AND THAT'S WHY NAMELESS "PROBABLY" ROBBED INHUN AND MURDERED HIM AND RAN AWAY
He would spin such a tale to Seungho and would exact revenge on Nameless. (Since he's a butcher, no one would care if he's dead)
Problem solved, Min would think. That way, he would fulfill his promise with Jihwa that
Tumblr media
"You will stay alive and Nameless will die in your place."
Since Min had already seen that Jihwa now has clung to Nameless, he's now going to destroy another potential relationship, ALL FOR HIS OWN AMUSEMENT.
Na-Kyum has run away and his trust issues are going through the roof
Seungho is now hellbent on finding out who really threw that corpse and would put all the blame on Nameless simply because he's a butcher
Jihwa now has no one to lean onto because Seungho's no longer with him and Nameless is now going to fight for his life against Seungho
While they are all running around like headless chickens, he could sneak in and steal Na-Kyum from the streets and have his way with him
But I think, just like the kidnapping, there would be a witness/witnesses for the second abduction
Tumblr media
Na-Kyum had already thrown up during the day, and he would go into another panic attack should someone try to snatch him from the streets again, and this time, the people will see a nobleman "trying to calm a lowborn down" just like what Seungho did in public in c76
We could see a repeat of c29 as well
Tumblr media
I noticed in these 2 instances, the public saw Na-Kyum having an anxiety attack, and in these both instances were times when Na-Kyum was not with Seungho
Surely at this point, the people will remember him. Plus, with the chatty tailor's words in c64
Tumblr media
Na-Kyum's appearance will now stand out if they see him
If Min gets a hold of Na-Kyum, they will surely wonder what he's doing with another nobleman and why he's having a panic attack
THE PEOPLE WILL TALK AND WHISPER
AND SHOULD SEUNGHO COME BY LOOKING FOR NA-KYUM, THEN THE TOWNSFOLK WOULD TELL HIM THAT HE'S BEEN TAKEN AWAY BY A NOBLEMAN IN GREEN
AND ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE.
