The Sunflower 🌻 ( Helianthus annuus) is probably the first flower many of us drew as children due to its simple shape and cheerful appearance. 

The sunflower was domesticated by the indigenous people of Mexico in prehistoric times for the seeds as a food source. Sunflower cultivation spread as far north as Canada in Precolumbian times. When they are young plants, sunflowers actively turn to face the sun. As mature plants they stay fixed in an East-facing position. 

There is an often-repeated Greek myth about Apollo and is admirer Clytie who turned into a sunflower. Of course, the Ancient Greeks did not know about sunflowers, so the original flower in the story was a Turnsole (Heliotropium spp.) which is a native European wild flower.

Helianthus annuus--Common Sunflower

I've ranted about them enough that they should get their own posts. lol Sunflowers have edible seeds, petals, and sometimes tubers, very young shoots, or young flowerheads. Some of them can be very aggressive.

The common sunflower, Helianthus annuus, is the one whose cultivars we grow for seeds or looks. It relies on its seeds to continue on, as it has a very short life cycle, lasting only the growing season.

All photos mine, unedited.

All but one of these is from my garden, but one of the individuals featured here was not planted by me! She put herself there and flowered rather nicely considering there isn't a ton of sun in that area. Now if only the sunchokes could follow suit. Sadly, neither from that one nor those I've planted myself, I haven't been able to get it to reliably reseed itself, but we'll see what happens this spring from those I planted last year.

Sunflowers seem to have a behavioural trait known as Heliotropism or Solar Tracking whereby they, especially the buds and younger flowers, would face and follow the movement of the sun through the day. However, when they mature, they would generally face east and won’t follow the sun anymore.
