I think even if you're not a particularly media critical person, if you're in online spaces a lot, and particularly online fandom spaces, it can be really easy to just like... forget that to most people media is just Entertainment. And I know that sounds stupid but what I mean is it's easy to forget that some ppl simply are not plugged into a constant stream of discussions surrounding the politics of media until you are asking your coworkers what tv shows and movies and books they like and they are telling you, known trans person, that they really recommend Harry Potter and South Park. And you have to just grit your teeth and not take it personally because you know these people are decently trans friendly, progressive ppl they just do not even have issues with these pieces of media on their radar because they are not as chronically tapped into news cycles about what children's book series authors have been saying on twitter, nor do they consider media a landscape unto which material harm could be made via offensive content like. You HAVE to just not be too judgy bc you are going to look like the out-of-touch asshole for acting weird about the Dumb Entertainment they like. And you can't even be autistic about the media YOU like around them bc at best they're just going to say "that sounds cool. never heard of it," about like. Undertale or something.
