Fandom: Fringe Pairing: Peter Bishop x Olivia Dunham (main canon pairing) Content warnings: pregnancy, spoilers? Word count: 432 Author's notes: set between the season 4 finale (Brave New World) and the Invasion of the Observers, while Olivia is pregnant

     Eight-month-pregnant Olivia Dunham sighed, closing the webpage on her computer.  Yet another list of baby names that had all sounded wrong to her had come and gone.  Given that she was due in just a few weeks, Olivia was rather anxious to have at least a few possibilities lined up for her daughter when she was born.

     The blonde ran a hand through her hair, wincing when her engagement ring caught a few pale strands.  She and Peter weren’t married yet- they’d agreed to wait until after their daughter was born- but they had begun some tentative wedding plans as well.  Just general things- what color the bridal party (Astrid, Rachel, Ella) should wear, what time of year they’d like best, and so forth.

     The doorknob rattled for a moment, attracting her attention, and a moment later the door opened.  “Honey, I’m home.”  Peter called.

     “That’s such a cheesy line.”  Olivia returned, grinning.

     “Yeah, but you love it.”  He replied, matching her smile as he stepped into the living room.  His gaze swept across the coffee table.  “Can’t find any baby names yet?”

    She rolled her eyes in irritation at the issue.  “They’re all too old or too new or too this or too that.”  She sighed again.  “All I know for sure is I want it to start with H.”

     “Thank God.”  He chuckled.  “For a minute I thought you were gonna say you wanted it to start with Z or something.”

     Olivia frowned.  “What’s wrong with Z names?”

     “There’s like, none of them, and they’re all weird.”

     “Zoey, Zinnia…” she began to tease, but paused.  “That’s where I run out.  You might have a point.”

     “Of course I do.”  Peter joked.  “So, ‘H’ names?”

     “Mm-hm.”

     “Well, let me think.  There’s ‘Holly’, ‘Hazel’, ‘Heather’.”

     “Hazel is an eye color and heather and holly are plants.”  Olivia retorted playfully.

     “Alright, alright.  Hannah- with or without the second h, or any version of Hayley.”  He offered.  Studying her skeptical facial expression, he continued: “Uh, there’s Hope, Harper.”

     The blonde shook her head.  “Mm-mm, it’s a little too modern.”

     “Old-fashioned, then?”  “Helen, Hester, Heidi.”

     “Those aren’t not bad.  I’ll keep them in mind.”

     Peter hummed to himself.  “Those are somewhat older names, so… Harriet, maybe, or Harietta.”

     She canted her head.  “I like that even better.”

     “The only other one I can think of like that is Henrietta.”

     Olivia nodded, her eyes lighting.  “That’s it.  It’s perfect.  I love it.”

     “Henrietta.”  Peter repeated thoughtfully.  “I like it.”  He bent down and kissed Olivia’s belly, flooding it with butterflies again.  “We’ll see you soon, Henrietta.”

Headless has so many WOMEN!!! all kinds of boss bitches!!! they’re all so different from one another!!! they’re all at various different steps on the spectrum from cinnamon roll (specifically Judy) to badass zombie who wants to kill you!!! they didn’t HAVE to make the conflict between Matilda and Kat the crux of the resolution, they didn’t HAVE to make the Horseman a horse-she, they didn’t HAVE to make Matilda the most powerful character on the show with a pure heart, they didn’t HAVE to have the most successful popular YouTuber (who’s also the most obnoxious person you’ll ever see) be a woman, they didn’t HAVE to give us a cool-ass international spy/criminal genius secretly living in Sleepy Hollow who’s also a lady, they didn’t HAVE to have Ramona be the most dramatic babe you’ve seen on this planet in recent history, they didn’t HAVE to have Verla crawl out of a well/TV/orphanage/doll to creep everyone out and raise the dead!!! and that’s not even all of them, there’s so many cool af female characters, the funky judge, the cutthroat landlady, the sweet assistant with a purpose, all of them are awesome, and none of them feel like a cliché, none of them fall into misogynistic tropes, none of them are written for a male audience to thirst over without substance

we need more writing like this that gives women their half of our attention and love

after. four rewatches of headless, two of which were sponsored by dragging my parents into watching it with me, here’s a thought that i thunk.

spoilers below!!!

at least three of the characters (ichabod, matilda, baltus) all have fake books that they store their possessions inside. this makes varying levels of sense for their characters; matilda for the Vibes of spooky witch lady, baltus for keeping his bribery checks a secret, and ichabod for the fact that he’s a people pleaser who probably bought it off matilda to make her happy, but also ties in to a greater theme of the series.

(literally) not judging a book by its cover.

all three of these characters—and more!!—have ulterior agendas that are revealed throughout the series. ichabod isn’t just some dweeb in sleepy hollow by happenstance, he’s a descendant of the storms family, come back to town to right an ancient wrong. he is also a dweeb, but like. a cool dweeb. matilda isn’t just a witch, she’s keeping the undead corpse of her best friend alive with ancient evil magics and covertly working against her new friends. baltus isn’t just the town’s genial mayor, but a cutthroat politician who killed two people in his attempt to kill a third.

similarly, this lends itself to the story’s theme as a whole, that people are far more than what you expect. although this is plain to see in characters like brom (and his babes), who start off as airhead jocks with some pithy social commentary and wind up as airhead jocks with hearts of gold and loyalties as strong as the horseman’s sword, it is exemplified with the character of the horseman herself. so much of headless is about reexamining history and stripping away old biases. everyone believes the horseman is a decapitated hessian soldier, but is actually a woman practically written out of history in favor of her more famous husband. it’s about doing away with commonly accepted narratives and taking a closer look at the stories that accumulated to build the myth we all know today.

the fake books are both windows into the souls of their owners and the soul of the entire story!!! on the outside?? a beheaded hessian!!! on the inside??? a doing away with the ideas of colonialist cis white male-centric historical narratives that get preserved and a doing of justice for the names that get left out!!! it kicks ass!!!!! it kicks so much ass!!!!!

Headless Spirit Week: Final Predictions

Okay, but if I called the Woman in White being a family curse with Kat Van Tassel involved after ep 4, I am going to lose my goddamn mind.

"Alternatively, Kat's own mother or ancestor could be the Woman in White, who may have been Anneke who, perhaps, married into the Van Tassel family. Maybe there is a curse on that side of the family that makes their souls unable to move on or gives them supernatural gifts."

But anyhow, I am starting to believe even more that Kat and Matilda share the same mother. Original post theorising this and other things here: https://at.tumblr.com/starkidsdraco/random-headless-theories/8if64fhvmb8s They're both definitely hiding something and Matilda's defensive reaction to Ichabod asking if the woman in the photo (Kat's mother) was her mother is super suss. I'm wondering if the reason Kat wrote "see you on the other side" to Matilda in the yearbook was that Kat knew the Woman in White curse would mean she would have to die soon and take on the mantle or if she was referring to Matilda also having to pass on and join her in the afterlife in the future. I'm guessing there can't be two Women in White at once, so Kat will have to give the 'Woman in White' mantle to (I'm guessing) her younger sister, Matilda when she's ready or is otherwise forced to. Or Matilda just didn't inherit the curse but because of the family curse, they all have cold skin (as the Woman in White died in a blizzard). Or she has already died as well.

And lastly, my alternative theory is that instead of (possibly) Kat being Anneke Storms, Baltus Van Tassel is actually a shapeshifted Anneke Storm. My original theory here: https://at.tumblr.com/starkidsdraco/okay-but-if-ichabod-really-is-the-descendant-of/p1rqt006pdjm I'm now wondering if Anneke killed the real Baltus (descendent of Cotton Van Tassel), stole his face and identity and had her own descendent, Kat, pose as his daughter. 'Baltus' clearly hates Cotton for no apparent reason. But Cotton's the only person they could find in Sleepy Hollow records who was known to have lost their head. I'm not ruling out Headless being Henrietta but I also think it's possible it's Cotton. If that's the case, I reckon 'Baltus' lied and only Cotton's head is in that urn, (either whole or in ashes) rather than their whole body. I don't know what Anneke had against Cotton but maybe they were a witch hunter or something. Maybe she had a last-minute change of heart (because they were in love, your honour) and killed Cotton instead of Henrietta. Or maybe she killed them both and it's Henrietta's skeleton that they found while on their heist.

Or, who knows, maybe we've been misled and Henrietta is/was the evil one and Anneke was good all along, scared that Henrietta was getting out of control. I guess that means Anneke could be Headless. I guess my theorised lineages might have to be shuffled around if that's the case. Idk there are so many ways this could go and I find that incredibly exciting!

Anyway, this has been super fun to theorise over. I haven't had a show to make my head explode with theories for a long time. So, thank you Shipwrecked! My mum and I spent 2 hours theorising about this show on one of our weekly walks. I'm gonna miss it and if you haven't already please check it out on Shipwrecked. youtube.
