Hestia: makes sure the hearth in Aphrodite’s home is always lit when her family comes over

Hades: sometimes bends the rules when he sees how sad aphrodite will be if one person in her favorite ship dies. he tells thanatos to hold off for a few more months or years to allow the couple more time to be happy

Hermes: provides safe passageway for Aphrodite’s travels as much as he can

Apollo: knows Aphrodite’s music taste and inspires the radio people to play her favorite songs when he knows she’s on the road

Artemis: has instructed the larger/scarier wild animals in the forest to not bother Aph when she’s on a walk in the woods, but told the birds and squirrels and deer to be friendly and make her feel like a Disney princess

Ares: will stop whatever fight he’s in, even if it means losing, if aph needs him in a moment’s notice

Hephaestus: as god of fire, has commanded the element to never catch flame where it shouldn’t in her home so she can sleep with her favorite candle burning if she wants

Athena: continues to run the advice column (in the mortal newspaper) that Aphrodite loves to read

Dionysus: always keeps an eye on Aphrodite when she’s drunk to make sure a) nobody messes with her and b) she gets home safely

-this is just more of my opinion on my versions from an outside view. i kind of don't really know why i think this way. but like...i think i've said this before, but to me i think the zeus and his main sons on olympus are considered 'handsome'. or like, they should be seen as quite good looking to me, really attractive.

-like, i want them to be viewed not as 'conventional typical hot guy' kind of attractive. but like, i can't quite convey it within my style. but it's more of like, you know when you see a really beautiful family and they all have strong features that you can tell runs within them??? that's kind of what i mean with zeus and the sons. kind of like the hadid family, as an example.

-i personally think the sons look really good, even say heph or even herms. but it's truly thanks to zeus...and whatever that 'something' is with his face. i want to say it's intensity, but i don't quite think that's it either. oddly enough, i don't think the girls are as pretty. within the line of daughters that is.

-do not get me wrong though, I ABSOLUTELY THINK THEY ARE STUNNING. like, gosh especially the older girls. like, the girls are pretty. i just think personally their features don't have the same vibe as their brothers.

-in contrast, and i think you can kind of lowkey can tell with my designs with them. but i think the egyptian ladies are the ones who i think are ABSOLUTELY grand. like, hugely stunning. maybe the makeup helps but even without. i like to think they are exeptionally beautiful. very model-esque.

-speaking of an egyptian lady. out of all the love gods, i think hathor is the absolute prime example of her class. the perfect specimen. like, i look to her and i go. WOW. now that's deity that encompasses love.

-dite i don't consider a love god, but nor does she. lololol.

now for more actual character facts:

-athena has never really hated them. but she has a complicated relationship and history with the winged enforcers, as they absolutely detest her. for understandable reasons that i might share later.

-dionysus, seph, and hebe have this...kind of weird kinship that's kind of lowkey. they're not super close or anything, but they're kindred spirits because they're the younger bunch in the group of main kids. and that they're also kind of just weird/odd in some way, so that's why they kind of stick together sometimes.

-even funnier, they don't really meet up often because of their said weirdness and slight ostracization from the elder kids.

-both eros and dite agree that their relationship is really that of a babysitter watching a child, much to both their chagrin. some days get excessive and dite sometimes thinks eros is more a jailor than a should be mentor.

-eros too, doesn't exactly want to watch or be with dite like some kind of guardian. in fact, her presence over time hasn't been exactly good for his well being. he sticks around for a reason though.

-the muses and kharites have had a friendly rivalry for eons. it's really all in good fun, no real beef. but the younger kharites are usually the ones who try to start something.

Okay so I recently decided to check out SCP's 701 & 2264 after seeing them pop up on my daily internet browsing. ( and parsley because of the potential side Cannon of them relating to 035 since that one's one of my favorites, also because I also really like the aesthetic of the Carnival of Venice)

Anyway I decided to draw 701-1 or 2264-4 or the Ambassador of Alagadda.

And I will admit this isn't the best picture I've drawn but that tends to happen when I draw something for the first time and I'm sure I will get better if I practice drawing the more and hopefully get to the point where I'll be pleased with the results and I hope others will be pleased with them too.

MY MUSES AS DADS PT. 2 !

poseidon is about as chill as you can get.  he is a gentle sort of supportive, willing to be what his kids need to succeed, but also refusing to put limitations or any sort of control over them.  he encourages his kids to be free spirits, and to take advantage of a freedom he never got to have.  you wanna throw a party?  sure, just let him grab his good snacks out of the kitchen first.  you want to be an astronaut?  fuck yeah dude, let him grab you some nasa merch.  you need him to sit and listen to you vent?  sure, and he’ll punch the person who pissed you off, too.

he definitely struggles with the emotional side of things, and tends to take a step back so that his personal turmoil doesn’t fuck his kids up, which can come across as him being emotionally distant sometimes.  there are occasions where he could take things more seriously.  but he cares a lot, and cares enough to give his kids room to grow while still maintaining some distance, just in case they fall.

hephaestus doesn’t have many kids, so its hard for me to say exactly what he’s like.  but i imagine he is a strict, gruff, but ultimately doting parent.  he talks a big game, sets high expectations and rules, but ends up caving when his kid bats their eyelashes.  he’s more of a pat on the shoulder and a go back out and get ‘em kind of dad than a super emotionally present one, but its not for lack of emotion, just difficulty expressing.  (that’s kind of a common theme, tbh).  heph believes that one of the best ways he can show his love is by a) teaching his kids valuable skills, b) setting them up for successes, and c) giving them gifts and tools that will benefit them in their life.  and that’s what he does!

They hadn’t yet washed the blood from the ground.

What had started as a joyous occasion, a display of the Macedonian power and hospitality to guests from all over the Greek states, had ended in chaos. The murderer killed in pursuit before they could question him, leaving behind not only a fallen king but also an air of suspicion about the court.

They hadn’t yet washed the blood from the ground and Alexander could already feel the weight of a kingdom upon his shoulders.

It was the fate he had been waiting for, but he had never wanted it to happen that way. Grief settled in him like shackles binding him to the ground right when he had the promise of soaring high. Years of education had prepared Alexander to become a king, but not to watch his father’s assassination. It tormented him that he had stood just outside the theater, a precious distance that cost a life.

What pride! Philip had asked the prince to wait until the guests had seen him entering alone and in turn they witnessed the rise of a new king.

“If anyone looks for me, say that I have retired for the evening,” Alexander ordered one of the guards escorting him to his room – no one seemed to want him out of their sight after the fatal event. “They can save their condolences for the morning.” And they would fall back into it, for sure, each highborn man fearful of being accused of partaking in the murder, as if mere words would be enough for him to trust them unconditionally.

There was only one person whose presence he wanted at the moment, someone that could help keep his heavy heart at ease. He searched for the pair of dark eyes faithfully at his side and opened the door to his chambers, no need for words as he stepped inside.

I really enjoy your metas, so here is a thought:

A) do you think kepler has phantom limb pain from his hand

And if so

B) does the rest of the crew know, and how do you think their behaviors towards him may or may not have changed b/c of it or his hand in general? Hera kind of implies that he does (during their questions only game), and I kind of wonder how much extra info Hera has on him that she either doesn’t bother talking about / sharing cause she dislikes him, or is forbidden to talk about b/c of his rank. If this were the case, I do think Hera could have shared anyway (since by the end of the podcast she could ignore or work around orders), but may have chosen not to b/c it wasn’t really relevant....

Anyway, do you have any thoughts on this?

a. he definitely did (as you mentioned, hera asked if he still had stiffness in his hand), and i think it was wildly understated just how much pain was actually involved, given that the discomfort was even visible at all 😆 (eg hera asking him if he's in pain when she catches him rubbing at his wrist or grimacing and he'd tell her it was 'just some stiffness' because.. well, being visibly affected by pain is a vulnerability he can't afford to show, right?)

i also think the heph crew wouldn't withhold painkillers, but also that kepler would never take them because he can't be sure if they've been tampered with (WOULD the hephaestus crew tamper with them? unlikely. but there's still a chance, however minimal)

b. by that point i don't think hera was under any obligation to keep quiet about it, especially since the change of command to minkowski (even if she didn't register it at the end of the mutiny, i'm positive they would've had him verbally or officially transfer command once he was imprisoned). i DO think hera would have enough information on hand to know about phantom limb pain, but since kepler would've phrased it as 'stiffness', she was just being kinda mean by using his words to take a dig at him HAHA. i think a lot of people infantilize hera, but hera's (very understandably) mean, and that's a very fun aspect of her character that gets ignored so often... but that's an essay for another day LMAO

Okay, I've had some time to mull and read other very smart critiques of Horizon: Forbidden West, so here are my mishmashed thoughts!

Spoilers, spoilers, so many spoilers

I mean, first off, I loved the game! I loved returning to this world, it was insanely beautiful, I cried at the Redwood trees! I love Aloy, I love all of Aloy's friends, new and returning, I love all your NPC allies! I loved the new machines. I loved flying! I loved the new resource management system (I am a sucker for a good game resource management system, and I always struggled in HZD with whether I should keep a hard-won machine heart vs. a stack of ammunition-building material). I loved that this game included more puzzles in places that might have had just more machine fights in HZD! I loved swimming! Any time a game lets me have a water level, I become a fish; I live there now. I loved how fucking queer it is! On top of Lis and Alva being explicitly queer, it felt like every time a side-quest-giving NPC or Old World recording/data-point mentioned the person's significant other, they were queer! And there was trans and NB rep!

I think I was less bothered by the general flattening of the HZD NPCs than other people, but I agree that was definitely a thing, and other people have spoken on it more eloquently. Other people have also dug into the treatment of Talanah more eloquently too, so I won't rehash it here, except to say, weirdness of her questline not withstanding, I was most devastated that she didn't join the base gang. Come on! There were four cubicles in that bunk room!

As with everyone else, it was the writing that got me. Not on a line level, or even really on a character level, but on an over-arching story level. Which was disappointing because HZD is so well written! And frankly, I want to talk about Hephaestus.

Given how Hades and, to a lesser extent, HEPH were written in HZD, I kind of expected all the subordinate functions to have become fully sentient AIs that Aloy would have to wrangle into working together without GAIA. But I was totally on board with bringing back GAIA, once it became immediately clear that was the primary goal. And I was following along great until GAIA explained that unless HEPH came back under her control, the world was going to end in a few months. And it feels like (timeline got a bit a wonky, because I pressed through a bunch of main quests so I could get all the gadgets before doing a bunch of world exploring) it was not too long after that that it becomes clear you need HEPH to defeat the Zeniths. I mean, for the latter at least, the door is left open for another option (i.e. Sylens' contraption), even if the characters kind of double-down on HEPH as the only plan.

So here you have merging HEPH with GAIA as the only way to (a) stop the Zeniths from destroying the world, but more importantly (b) to prevent a worldwide ecological collapse that is going to happen in 4 months. The Zeniths, I mean you could always 11th-hour foil their plans for ages if necessary (and if the story had gone off that way). But GAIA reiterates it to you multiple times early on that ecological collapse is going to happen without HEPH. That merging with HEPH is the only way to stop it.

And therein lies the problem. What HZD, especially Frozen Wilds, made clear, but which HFW hammers home is that HEPHAESTUS is the reason machines got more violent. And at it's heart, the whole conceit of the Horizon games is that you get to fight giant machine creatures. That's, like, their whole thing. So the game is telling me "you have to merge HEPH with GAIA, it's the only way to save the world" but in my head I'm thinking "there's no way that can happen because what would the franchise even become at that point".

And then the game...doesn't do anything with it?? The Zeniths take over as the most pressing issue. And you do manage to defeat them with Sylens and Tilda's help. Then Aloy has a throw-away line about how you caught HEPH before, you can do it again, but the bigger problem is Nemesis. Like girl???? Is it???? First off, Nemesis' beef was with the Zeniths who...imprisoned it? Ignored it? And they're all dead. I guess we can assume it's going to just hate all humans? Second: it kind of seemed like the Gemini cauldron was the only place to catch HEPH, and the way HEPH is written, it seems smart enough it won't be tricked back there again.

It comes back around to what others have said, that this feels like 2 games smashed together: a story about restoring GAIA to stave off ecological collapse and a story about the Zeniths coming to Earth, ostensibly to destroy it. And the first gets abandoned for the sake of the second.

Also what is the time scale???? I know these games play fast-and-loose with geography, not that I'm complaining there (side note: the irony of finishing the water quests in the desert and then walking less than a day to find a huge river and lush jungle?), but I have no sense of how much time is supposed to have passed. GAIA originally says 4 months until ecological collapse, but then stretches it out if she has her subordinate functions--I don't remember how long, but less than a year. Does the entire game take place in a few days? Months? How long until permanent ecological collapse by the end of the game? And it's all irrelevant anyways, because they can never trap HEPH because then the franchise falls apart!

And listen, I get that that's going to be the next game's problem, that they'll have to come up with a McGuffin because HEPH will be untrappable, but why make your main goal of the game something unachievable and then not come up with a work-around solution? It just felt weird. It's like, this could have been a game about restoring the subordinate functions and making those each much longer quests, and GAIA insists you need HEPH to stave off ecological collapse, but in the end you find a work around for that! And the next game could be about Far Zenith.

I just kind of felt, at the end, like what did Aloy even accomplish? We killed all the Zeniths, who actually weren't going to stick around and were planning to leave Earth anyways instead of destroying it. I get that they were all arrogant assholes, but it feels like their whole storyline could have just been "hey, we see you have a copy of Gaia, could we get a copy of that? We fucked up our first colony and want to make a new one on a different planet." I guess we saved Beta? (Who I love, don't get me wrong.) And bought a few more months before ecological collapse? And helped quash a rebellion among the Tenakth so that maybe they can have peace with the Carja? Which should have felt more like a main plot point but ended up feeling like a side quest?? Like, that could have been the final battle!

I guess after writing that, it feels like this was two games smashed together but simultaneously somehow left unfinished?

I dunno. At the end of the day, I still loved the game. I'll definitely replay it. With a big open world like this, cohesive plot becomes less important to me (I couldn't tell you the plot of Skyrim if you put a gun to my head and Dragon Age: Inquisition has only the barest bones of one stringing it together). I just feel a bit disappointed after how good HZD was.

ALPHONSINE LEFERVE : : TASK ONE

ABILITY INSPIRATION : : Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA: Brotherhood) && Katai (Bungou Stray Dogs) & & 

how did they discover their powers and limitation? She was ten when both made an appearance. So sudden and out of the ordinary, she didn’t believe it until she tested it out at least four more times. A girl always surrounded by electronics and strange items because of her grandfather’s shop, learning how to use and control her abilities wouldn’t be a surprise for anyone who saw her tinkering with something. Control and understanding came with years of participate and working in her grandfather’s shop before leaving for NL. They simply helped with refining her skills. Metal manipulation allows her to manipulate and shape metal into whatever she wants. Limitations for this includes being unable to just create metal out of nothing and has to take into consideration the metals mass and other properties before she can use it. Then there’s technokinesis, the ability that allows her to manipulate and control electronics and machines, can even communicate with said electronics. Limitations includes the inability to control anything that is mechanical and doesn’t have electronic properties and depending on the quality and severity of the damage of an electronic, she’ll be unable to control it. 

how do they handle it ? Both require thought and careful precision. Must be always thinking, carefully piecing everything together and accurate analysis has to be made. Both are handled with the upmost consideration for what she’s trying to create or manipulate so that it doesn’t blow up in her face ( not literally with an explosion you silly goose !!!! ). 

how do they recharge ? Exactly like your phone or favorite gaming system, Alphonsine requires rest and the need to charge herself up. Literally, just let the girl sleep and she’s all good. 

are there any life hacks they found to help the restriction last shorter ? None. 

how advanced do they think they are with their abilities? Eight out of ten with metal manipulation ( the idea of creation has never been difficult, it was always learning how to keep the creation up and make sure that it wouldn’t break ), and eight point five out of ten with technokinesis ( while only half a point difference, this still means a lot to a girl who can just understand electronics as if it’s second nature. )
