Lugano Ch R2: Pierre-Hugues Herbert [6] def. Antoine Escoffier 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2 Match Stats
📸 ATP official website
As the match progressed, this turned out to test the more aggressive person when it comes to their groundstrokes, which P-H. Herbert succeeded in the beginning. However, the balance became questioned as soon as Escoffier found his range, volleying his way to the second set before his subsequent errors, due to being made to stay back from the baseline, and P-H. Herbert had not looked back since. As a result, the sixth seed had 3 more break points with 12, successfully converting half of them despite Escoffier converting more than half of his break points but was unable to maximize his chances.
Besides, P-H. Herbert also appeared more solid from his serves. Scoring 9 aces than Escoffier's 7, the sixth seed won 5% more points from his first serves, which got him out of trouble in various occasions. On the other hand, Escoffier risked more of his second serves, which resulted in 6 of his double faults than P-H. Herbert's 4, thus only won 42% of his second serve points, 13% more than the sixth seed, especially due to his rushed follow ups from the baseline.
In tomorrow's quarterfinals, P-H. Herbert will face defending champion Otto Virtanen, who defeated Cem Ilkel 6-2, 6-1 in a more straightforward version of their last year's final rematch later that evening (local time). This could be interesting to see whose offensives will be executed better, and who could control and manage the pacing from their groundstrokes (and sometimes, their net game). A fun day also awaits in general!

The ripe, the golden month has come again, and in Virginia the chinkapins are falling. Frost sharps the middle music of the seasons, and all things living on the earth turn home again … the fields are cut, the granaries are full, the bins are loaded to the brim with fatness, and from the cider-press the rich brown oozings of the York Imperials run. The bee bores to the belly of the grape, the fly gets old and fat and blue, he buzzes loud, crawls slow, creeps heavily to death on sill and ceiling, the sun goes down in blood and pollen across the bronzed and mown fields of the old October.

34 in completion, 47 if you count the ones I started and didn't finish
The third set almost became a one-way traffic despite its chaotic start. While Escoffier started with a forehand error for P-H. Herbert's early break to 1-0, he turned out to be broken back (1-1) moments after Escoffier's rarely working volley set a crucial equalize before outhitting the sixth seed's forehand side for the said break-back. However, 3 straight unforced errors, including a forehand one to close it, did not help, thus P-H. Herbert broke back again to 2-1 before consolidating his lead to 3-1.
Three consecutive games later, P-H. Herbert turned out to dominate the pace as Escoffier's unforced errors did not help either. Ending the game with a double fault two points after a forehand equalizer from the sixth seed and a third-shot backhand error for the break point, P-H. Herbert earned his chance to serve for the match, which he perfectly executed to take the third set 6-2, finishing it with an excellent serve and forehand finish to secure his spot in the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately, though for obvious reasons, I’m constrained by my own reading habits, so if you have any suggestions for underrepresented types here, please let me know and thanks for the ones that I’ve already received!
