Here's to us
the generation that watched their favorite shows live
that had to wait a week for the next episode (multiple weeks for holiday breaks & months for summer breaks)
the generation that cried with how a particular episode ended or had alot of feelings and then (painstakingly) had to wait for dial up to pass to log onto a fairly new Fan Forum (hey, the internet was just becoming a big thing) so you can talk about it.
the generation that was a complete "The WB" whore and watched just about every show they had.
the generation that wrote fanfiction and helped spark Fanfiction.net or Archives of Our Own
the generation that got to be the last great generation where we played outside all day and came in for dinner just in time to watch a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Dawson's Creek or Angel.
the unique generation that has knowledge of life before the internet and life after it. Nobody else will experience that.
Here's to Us. Cheers.

Here's to Us - Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera
Read: May 2023
Here's to Us is the sequel to What if it's Us. It follows the same characters but older. They are college age now, this book takes place two years after the last one. After the end of the last one, which was not emotionally satisfying, but narratively making a point, this picks up the threads from that ending. The separation and reunion of the cast of characters in this book is so fun. Unfortunately there is a lot of weird angst in this book. It's drawn out the whole book. I get that's the romantic tension being played out, but wow I wanted to shake the main characters so badly. I personally found this annoying, but this is the only detractor I had with the book. Otherwise it was joy enough like the first one. I appreciated that this one didn't shy away from the messy end of relationship stuff. It was sad, but handled well narratively. The characters didn't really handle it well. But life is messy and the authors really did depict that. Of course it's still a romance and that part was just a good as before, but a little more mature.

This oneshot is something I've been wanting to write for awhile now, my impression comes from this amazing song by Hailstorm - Here's To Us and the other from the amazingly talented @yjano
It had been one hell of a day Jake was so glad to get back home thankfully for him his apartment was inside a massive building. Jake ran his own company dealing in all kinds of different things. Some legal and for the most part the rest weren't. When Jake was done with a meeting he loosened his tie and went to sit at his desk. MC walked over to where he was sitting and put her hands on his shoulders.
We could just go home right now
Or maybe we could stick around
For just one more drink, oh yeah
Get another bottle out
Lets shoot the shit
Sit back down
For just one more drink, oh yeah
MC leaned down and placed a soft kiss on Jake's cheek, a warm smile spread across his face. He has everything he ever wanted: money, power, all the most expensive cars,a massive apartment but most of all he had the most precious women standing right next to him.
Here's to us, here's to love
All the times that we fucked up
Here's to you, fill the glass
'Cause the last few days have kicked my ass
So let's give 'em hell
Wish everybody well, here's to us, here's to us
MC moved from Jake's side and sat across his lap snuggling into his chest, she could still smell the expensive aftershave on his clothes she couldn't help but smile as the smell took over her senses.
Stuck it out this far together
Put our dreams through the shredder
Let's toast 'cause things got better
And everything could change like that
And all these years go by so fast
But nothing lasts forever
Here's to us, here's to love
Jake wrapped his arms around the women that he was so deeply in love with, they had been together ever since Jake took over the business from her dad. MCs dad thought very highly of Jake and he knew he could leave the business in capable hands.
All the times, that we messed up
Here's to you, fill the glass
'Cause the last few nights have kicked my ass
If they give ya hell
Tell em to go fuck themselves, here's to us, here's to us
Here's to all that we kissed
And to all that we missed
To the biggest mistakes
That we just wouldn't trade
To us breaking up
Some days were harder than the others. Jake was always under so much pressure to make sure all the big deals went as smoothly as possible. It wasn't always easy but somehow Jake always managed to pull it off with ease.
Without us breaking down
To whatever's comin' our way
Here's to us, here's to love
All the times that we fucked up
Here's to you, fill the glass
'Cause the last few days have kicked my ass
So lets give 'em hell
Wish everybody well
They both sat in the chair for a few more minutes before heading back to the apartment for the night. Once home Jake and MC got changed and watched some TV before heading to bed for the night.
Here's to us, here's to love
All the times, that we messed up
Here's to you, fill the glass
'Cause the last few nights have kicked my ass
If they give ya hell
Tell em to go fuck themselves, here's to us, here's to us (Go fuck themselves)
Here's to us, here's to us
Here's to us, here's to us
Here's to us, here's to love
Here's to us, wish everybody well
Here's to us, here's to love
Here's to us, here's to us
