Did you know that he and Malcolm X were best friends and worked together as dishwashers at the same restaurant in Harlem in the 1940s. The staff called Foxx “Chicago Red” and Malcolm “Detroit Red”.
—Remembering Redd Foxx (Dec 9, 1922 – Oct 11, 1991)—
He portrayed Fred G. Sanford on the television show Sanford and Son and starred in The Redd Foxx Show and The Royal Family. His film projects included All the Fine Young Cannibals (1960), Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), Norman... Is That You? (1976) and Harlem Nights (1989).
Red Foxx was birth named John Elroy Sanford in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in Chicago's South Side.
His father, Fred Sanford, an electrician and auto mechanic from Hickman, Kentucky, left the family when Foxx was four years old. He was raised by his half-Seminole mother, Mary Hughes, from Ellisville, Mississippi, his grandmother and his minister.
Foxx attended DuSable High School in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood with future Chicago mayor Harold Washington. Foxx had an older brother, Fred Jr., who provided the name for his character on Sanford and Son.
In the 1940s, he met Malcolm Little, later known as Malcolm X. In Malcolm's autobiography, Foxx is referred to as "Chicago Red, the funniest dishwasher on this earth." He earned the nickname because of his reddish hair and complexion.

Name: Townes Young
Occupation: Singer/songwriter, frontman of Townes Young and The Long Con
Age: 27
Hometown: Hickman, Kentucky
Being a trailer park kid with big dreams was a family tradition for Cheyenne Willis — that’s why, as soon as she’d cobbled together enough money for a beat-up pick-up truck and a tank of gasoline, she hit the road from Hickman, Kentucky in pursuit of Waylon Young’s tour. She was a massive fan of his music and what it represented — the outlaw spirit, freedom, and a background not unlike what she’d left behind. Sure, Waylon was a major name in country music at that point with a rags-to-riches American Dream story that would enviably be made into a Hollywood biopic one day, but for Cheyenne, she heard herself in his lyrics. The fact that he was a looker didn’t hurt anything either.
Waylon didn’t have groupies, but he did have staff — that’s how Cheyenne managed to swing a gig selling t-shirts on the tour, sneaking away every show to catch at least a song or two. One night, at an after party in the parking lot outside of the Mercury Lounge, they’d locked eyes over a keg and plastic cups, gone back to his bus to cut lines with razor blades, and...you can guess the rest. The ring on his finger didn’t deter Cheyenne, because she was the kind of girl that was convinced that that one night in the middle of Oklahoma would change everything for her.
And it did, but not in the way she’d planned. She’d been a mistake, and so was the positive line on the pregnancy test she took after she couldn’t take the smell of the concession stands a few months later. Waylon — and his publicist — had sent her home, paid for her hospital visits, the rent on her double wide, and out of patient rehab. Six months later, she gave birth to a tow-headed baby she named Townes Waylon Young after his daddy...and two months after that, she was self soothing once again with whatever she could get her hands on.
Townes was almost 3 when she ODed — a neighbor found him wandering between the trailers in a dirty diaper and bare feet, his mother “sleeping” in a lawn chair nearby. After 6 months in foster care, Townes was transferred to a place that looked like a palace to him — the home of his father, where he suddenly had a stepmother who put hot food on the table, a father that pushed him on the swings (whenever he was home), and a brother who laughed at his accent and his nonsense and took him around everywhere he went. Like his father, Townes took to the guitar early and relished getting to watch his father play from backstage whenever his stepmother let him and Wyatt go on tour with him during summer break. When his dad joined his mother in heaven after his own overdose when Townes was 13, Townes was starting to dream of a career in music for himself.
He was a difficult teenager. He was kicked out of two high schools by the time he was sixteen, expelled for multiple instances of fighting, smoking weed, and drinking on school property during school hours. Under his stepmother’s supervision, he started studying for his GED right around the time he recorded his first album at 17...and the first time someone cut a line for him in the studio. Within two years, Townes had earned a reputation as a rowdy but talented musician who made surprisingly quality, thoughtful music about hard times and long nights, girls and good times with the boys. He’d had a successful 26-city tour across the US and a quick 7-city one in Europe. He’d also been arrested twice on drunk and disorderlies, but that only added to his persona, only confirmed that he wasn’t all talk.
With the second album came more acclaim and a second tour...which he was forced to abandon after a DUI arrest and subsequent 2-month stint in prison for punching the officer who’d made the arrest — sure, maybe the judge was trying to send a message with the sentence, there was a wider message being spread around country music: that Townes Young was headed for the same fate as his father.
After he got out of prison, while fans still clambered for new music and another tour, and his label was quick to forgive. Townes ripped out a third album, earning him a slew of Americana award nominations and a third tour. From that point on, Townes was on the road full time, making music and switching area codes almost as fast as he was knocking back beers. Sure, he was blackout on stage most nights and it wasn’t an irregular occurrence for him to forget his own lyrics on stage, but the crowds didn’t seem to mind.
A second DUI arrest — immediately after a show where he gave an impassioned, intoxicated speech about which body part of his the police could suck — didn’t go over as well. He avoided another prison sentence by agreeing to attend an in-patient rehab for 6 months, but that didn’t keep his label from dropping him and a decent number of fans boycotting him. When he got out of rehab just after his 25th birthday, Wyatt brought him home to his stepmother’s house, got him set up with a guitar, and tried to keep him focused on music. And it worked. Within a year, he’d been signed by a smaller label with a reputation for representing cult-loved alternative country acts and set to work on a fourth album. And, more importantly, he was sober.
Still, making an album — and paying back the debts he’d run up after he’d had to cancel his last tour — cost money. Wyatt got him set up on tour once again, dead set on making sure he played every show and stayed sober doing it. Now, Townes is getting back to playing shows with his band, The Long Con, and prompting his newest album, Safety Off, and attempting to at least pretend to try to stay away from the hard stuff...at least when his brother is around.

Rube Waddell's Grave in San Antonio, Texas George “Rube” Waddell was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on October 13, 1876. He was one of the best pitchers in the history of professional baseball, but today he is mostly remembered for his unconventional behavior and antics, both on and off the field. Waddell didn't attend school often as a child. Instead, he preferred hanging out at local fire stations and following them as they went out on calls. He was later remembered by locals as having a hobby of throwing rocks at birds, an odd and cruel talent that undoubtedly helped him when he later began his career as a baseball pitcher. At 18 he tried out for and was given a roster spot on a local semi-pro baseball team. In his short time there a fellow player called him “Rube” because of his simpleminded nature, a nickname he embraced and was known as for the rest of his life. His incredible pitching talent was quickly realized and he was awarded a professional contract by the Louisville Colonels. Over his 13-year professional baseball career, Waddel accumulated numerous accolades. In 1905 he led the American League in wins, strikeouts, and lowest earned run average, winning the “Triple Crown.” He led the league in strikeouts for six straight seasons. (In 1903 and 1904 Waddell had back-to-back seasons with over 300 strikeouts, a feat that wouldn't be repeated by another player for over 60 years.) To this day, Rube Waddell holds the single-season record for strikeouts in the American League by a left-handed pitcher. In exhibition games, to show off, he would occasionally wave his teammates off to the side of the field and successfully play defense with only his catcher.  Despite all of this, Waddell is better known for his eccentricities that were exacerbated by his lifelong struggle with alcoholism. He was notorious for arriving at the stadium moments before the game began, still wearing his street clothes. He would change into his uniform while walking through the grandstands, occasionally stealing and chugging fans' beers as he went. On more than one occasion he ran out of the stadium because he heard a firetruck drive by blaring its sirens and he chased after it to help. He once left mid-game because he decided he would prefer to be fishing. Opposing fans would sometimes successfully distract him by holding up puppies, which Rube would gleefully run off the mound to play with. After the 1905 season, Waddell's contract was amended to forbid eating crackers in bed after numerous complaints from his roommate, catcher Ossee Schreckengost. In the off-season, Wadell would pick up odd jobs that included bartending, semi-pro football, and wrestling alligators in traveling circuses. He was notorious for going on multi-day drinking binges and marrying women he met while he was drunk—it's unknown how many wives Waddell had over his lifetime. After a drunken brawl in 1908, a warrant for his arrest was issued in Massachusetts. For the rest of his career, Waddell missed games whenever his team traveled to Boston. After the 1908 season, his team's owner paid Waddell to be the groundskeeper of his remote hunting lodge in an attempt to keep him out of trouble. But his drinking got worse—in 1909 he passed out while on the pitcher's mound in the middle of a game. After the 1910 season, no professional teams wanted to hire Waddell, and he was forced to play semi-pro. In the winter of 1911, Rube was working on a farm in Hickman, Kentucky, when it was struck by catastrophic flooding. He spent hours in the frigid waters stacking sandbags and reinforcing levees and afterward came down with pneumonia and tuberculosis that hampered him for the rest of his life. By 1913, his health problems became too severe to continue playing. Waddell moved to San Antonio, Texas, where his sister lived and could care for him as his tuberculosis worsened. He died on April 1, 1914, at 37 years old, and was buried there. Pitcher Walter Johnson said “Rube Waddell had more sheer pitching ability than any man I ever saw” and his longtime manager Connie Mack described him as “the atom bomb of baseball long before the atom bomb was discovered.” During his lifetime he was often described as childlike and simple, but modern analysts have concluded that he likely had a developmental disability or similar condition that couldn't have been diagnosed at the time. In 1946, Rube Waddell was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/rube-waddell-grave

the gospel us for all
“and these good tidings of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole inhabited earth for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come." matt 24:14
we have lost many saints throughout the ages.  “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” psa 116:15  i would like to recount a brief history of one of them.  he gave his all for our Lord.
j.m. mccaleb was born and raised in hickman county, tennessee.  at age fifteen, he was baptized into Christ in the duck river.  in 1892, mccaleb graduated from the college of the bible in lexington, kentucky and set sail for japan.  he was sent out by the churches of Christ.  he wrote two books about his mission experience, “on the trail of the missionaries," and “once traveled roads."  these were to help others learn how to succeed in mission work in foreign fields.
mccaleb wrote this song after living in another culture for thirty years.  this song shows his mission heart.  the song is not printed in all hymnbooks, so here are the verses:
of one the Lord has made the race, thro' one has come the fall; where sin has gone must go His grace: the Gospel is for all.
the blessed gospel is for all, the gospel is for all; where sin has gone must go His grace; the gospel is for all.
say not the heathen are at home; beyond we have no call; for why should we be blest alone? the Gospel is for all.
the blessed gospel is for all, the gospel is for all; where sin has gone must go His grace; the gospel is for all.
received ye freely, freely give, from every land they call; unless they hear they cannot live: the gospel is for all.
the blessed gospel is for all, the gospel is for all; where sin has gone must go His grace; the gospel is for all.
THE BLESSED GOSPEL REALLY IS FOR ALL!
