slàinte, mo ghràdh - Fic Meta
A meta post for my fluff fic, slàinte, mo ghràdh! I'll put the meta thoughts in after a cut, as usual.
-
The Fic's Title
The title, "slàinte, mo ghràdh", is Gaidhlig / Scottish Gaelic for "cheers, my love". I'm not a fluent Gaidhlig speaker but I am learning, and I'm really fond of it as a language. Gaidhlig is really incredibly important to our culture, especially because speaking our native Scottish languages was actually illegal here for a long time as part of an assimilation effort to "civilise" the Highlands. Very few people speak our languages here, now, but we're working hard to try and keep our languages alive. I thought this would be a nice way to include it.
-
Real Places
Lots of the places in this fic are real places in Edinburgh! The museum, of course, is real.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hotel they stayed in is also real, and I even looked ahead of time to see what their rooms would look like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The restaurant they went to get the cranachan is the Abbotsford Bar and Restaurant, since I'd read that their cranachan is good and gets recommended by Edinburgh locals. The main street is, of course, real, and the park they went to when it was snowing is The Meadows, the same place where the torch procession started.
The horse statues at the end are The Kelpies, giant horse head statues which light up at night and look incredible in the snow. They're bigger than you might think just from looking at pictures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-
Foods Mentioned
Most food mentioned in this fic is real.
Rumbledethump is a real cabbage dish here, made with cabbage, potato, swede, and cheese, and you can get it in little pastries sometimes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cranachans are a real dessert here, and a very historical one, originally made to celebrate the autumn harvests :) they're great, although usually better when made at home rather than eaten at a restaurant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sticky toffee pudding is INCREDIBLE and one of the best things we've got. That sauce could heal any wounds. It's meant to come with hot sauce to drench the cake, and the ice cream melts into it. UGH I could die.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Curry stuffed naan is a real thing you can get at our Christmas markets in Edinburgh - curry is also pretty widely loved in the UK. Tikka Masala was invented here by a Bangladeshi-Scottish man, Ali Ahmed Aslam, back in the 1970s! Phall was also invented in Birmingham. The UK really likes curry.
Cock-a-leekie is a real soup here. It's just chicken and leek soup. Cullen skink is also a real meal here, and it's a thick haddock soup. Seafood and fish is very commonly eaten here, and salmon is especially good in Scotland. We do seafood right.
I disagree fundamentally with "British food sucks" jokes because honestly, I feel like people who say that haven't tried actual British food. British is not synonymous with English; Britain is a collection of several countries which includes England, and just using Scotland as an example, we have some really fantastic foods. It's sad to me to see it get written off when so much of Scottish culture has had to fight tooth and nail just to exist after centuries of assimilation efforts. Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are all countries in our own right and our cultures - and tastes in food - exist independently from England.
-
Hogmanay
New Year is focused on a little more in this fic, and there's a reason for that - generally, New Year is a bigger holiday in Scotland than Christmas, and there's historical context for it. Christmas was actually made illegal here back in the 1600s, and as a result, Hogmanay (or New Year) became a large celebration in its own right. The Scots LOVE Hogmanay, and New Year celebrations in Edinburgh is a festival which lasts several days, including the torch procession (a LOT of our celebrations include fire), ceilidh, live music festivals, drinking pub nights, and fireworks etc.
The ban on Christmas was lifted about seventy years later, but Hogmanay was still a huge celebration, and it's an important part of our lives, now.
-
Clothes
The ugly sweaters mentioned in the fic are real.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The nicer ones are also real, and I really like them! Truly though, they're not warm enough to keep you cosy in the snow. You need a thick coat, winter boots, and probably also a hat/gloves/scarf for that. The cold here is no joke; even though the temperatures don't look that cold, Scotland is so humid and wet that it's really impossible to escape and it burrows deep. I know people who live through -20C Canadian winters with no problem but HATE wintering in Scotland because it's miserable, even if it's not that cold on paper.

The reindeer plush is a reference to my freckle fic!

It's him, but reindeer flavoured.

Nikolas Cruz bought the AR-15 that he used to kill 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School because it was “cool-looking.” That’s what he told a Broward Sheriff’s detective, according to court documents.
It was cool-looking.
Cruz’s trial isn’t over yet. The prosecution has rested, and the defense is making its case against the death penalty, after his guilty plea. But even as the jury continues its heartbreaking job, one so agonizing it would be beyond the endurance of many, the AR-15-style gun marketed as “America’s rifle” continues to plague us all.
Cruz chose the same style of weapon as the shooter in Uvalde, the one in Las Vegas, the one at Pulse in Orlando, the one at Sandy Hook, the one in Buffalo, the one in Highland Park, Illinois. These are guns that trace their roots to the Vietnam War. They’re designed to kill lots of people and to look pretty much the same as ones used in the military.
It makes us numb, that list of shootings. But how many of us would still feel that way — could still feel that way — if we’d seen what the jurors in the Cruz trial have had to see? They don’t have the luxury of averting their eyes from the carnage. They can’t duck from the reality of what this country allows: Cruz purchased his weapon legally.
That has to change.
The graphic photos of human beings’ destruction — the tiny entrance wound, the gaping, obscene exit wound — were shielded from the public, considered too awful for most of us to contemplate. But the jurors deciding Cruz’s fate had to see them. Reporters covering the case also viewed them, including David Ovalle.
Ovalle is the Miami Herald’s veteran court reporter. He’s seen some of the worst things that humans can do to each other. But even he struggled to comprehend the horrific damage depicted in the photos.
“For me, the exit wounds were so jarring to view,” he said. “It’s hard to even describe them, because the descriptions of gaping wounds, ragged flesh and deep-red-colored holes just don’t do enough to convey the devastation caused by these weapons of war.”
He talked about one boy, shot eight times, with exit wounds on his forearm — “a massive hole of ragged flesh” — and one of his legs. And about a girl, lying on the floor in front of a classroom lectern, “her eyes wide open as if she’s in pain, her mouth slightly open.” The side of her head is missing, her brain pulverized by a high-velocity bullet.
None of us should have to know about the damage that high-velocity bullets can do. And yet, as the shootings continue, so many of us do.
‘Snowstorm’ of damage Medical examiners have offered more grim lessons during this trial. They told jurors that the bullets that AR-15-style weapons use are created to inflict massive internal damage. Forensic pathologists testified about how the bullets tore through flesh and hit bone, creating a “snow storm” of bullet fragments peppering the person’s insides, often fatally.
As former Broward chief medical examiner Craig Mallak described it, “It’s a very small bullet, but it’s moving at 3,000 feet per second. There’s so much energy with these bullets. It just tears skin, bones, organs.” It’s a path 20 times to 30 times the size of the actual bullet, he said.
He performed the autopsy on 14-year-old Cara Loughran, who suffered three wounds: one small entry wound to the left upper back and two gaping exit wounds in the upper chest.
One bullet entered the rib area of 14-year-old Alaina Petty. “After that, the bullet was fragmented into multiple fragments that perforated the lungs, liver, kidney and exits on the left lateral side of the torso,” Associate Medical Examiner Iouri Boiko testified.
Meadow Pollack’s wounds were catastrophic. The 18-year-old was shot seven times, one fracturing her spine. A bullet that grazed her opened a five-inch gash on her skull. It wasn’t a direct hit. But the energy of the bullet was so powerful, she had no chance.
Marketing works This style of weapon isn’t popular by accident — it’s marketing. The Washington Post recently published a story outlining how one of the manufacturers of AR-15-style rifles tried to run an ad during the Super Bowl, knowing the NFL would probably reject it but ready to launch accusations of censorship and hypocrisy. The ad was rejected. And the counterattack was “by far” the most successful marketing the company had ever had, one company exec said.
The United States banned assault weapons before, from 1994 until 2004. In that 10-year period, mass-shooting deaths were reduced, according to at least one study, published in 2019 in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. In July, the House passed new assault-weapons ban legislation, largely along party lines. It’s unlikely to advance in the evenly split Senate, but at least it is some recognition that the Second Amendment doesn’t confer unlimited rights.
And there is support from the White House. President Biden, in a Pennsylvania speech on safer communities and gun control Tuesday, said the county “is awash in weapons of war.” Parents whose children died in the Uvalde shooting, he said, had to supply DNA for identification, “because the AR-15 just rips the body apart.”
Still-life horror Jurors in the Parkland case are doing what no one should have to do. Instead of shielding themselves from the dreadfulness of this mass shooting, they have to immerse themselves in it. They’ve listened to the anguished parents, siblings and friends. They’ve visited the still-life horror of Building 12 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, preserved since 2018 for the trial: dried pools of blood on the floor, overturned chairs, discarded headphones, a chess game still in the middle of play, broken glass that still crunches underfoot.
And they’ve seen those photos, the nightmarish pictures of slaughter four years ago on Valentine’s Day committed by someone who thought an AR-15 looked “cool.”
There have been so many shootings. We try to preserve our own sanity by turning away, afraid of having those images of blood and terror and viciousness branded into our consciousness forever.
But maybe we shouldn’t turn away. Maybe if all of us, including our elected officials, had to see those photos, pictures out of our worst nightmares, we could build some kind of consensus, again, on something that seems so simple it shouldn’t need saying: Weapons of war have no place in a civilized society.

Life in the Highlands has died down remarkably. Azusa has, for the first time in over a year, space to breathe the fresh breeze that passes through her window. She looks past the brittle sill &. fog-stained glass to the meadows that blow with yellow flowers. She can clearly vision Laika, Falfa &. Shalsha picking the flora from her position at her desk.
Though Laika &. her daughters are in bed right now. The early memories are burnt &. brazen in her mind. It's almost like it's still happening.
Tumblr media
Yes, life in the Highlands had slowed considerably for Azusa. Just how she likes it.
Though, of course, she doesn't see why that should stand to reason that she can't keep to her work.
Her chin slides down her palm, head parked in her hand by her cheekbone as she rolls a quill in hand. The spell before her — the one she has used to enter Vanzeld Castle in the past — takes her attention from any vague calmness prior. "Vosanosanon ujishidau veyani enrila".
A chant taught to her by the Lord of Flies herself, Beelzebub. It would open the gateway to the demon realm &. bring forth Beelzebub. Though, she wondered if there was a way to reverse this effect.
She can teleport, so if she mixes both spells, she's sure she can traverse realms without the need for the Demon King's escort (what a relief, she was tired of Pecora's antics).
Well, she planned to do just that. The Witch of the Highlands was no sooner in a field by herself, drawing a pentagram &. chanting an incantation as she prays to the Goddess that revived her that this goes to plan. 300 years is not nearly enough time for her to know the full range of her arsenal, nor enough to understand the weight of her powers. She moves to the middle, finishing the chant as she seals her eyes tight.
Nothing.
Tumblr media
She opens her eyes again, #゙ ᴀ ——— ❝ That's ... unusual. Maybe I drew the runes wrong ... or- ❞
Tumblr media
Oh. It absolutely had worked. The fireworks just hadn't set off, it seems. She stands not in the Highlands field anymore, but a place completely unrecognisable. It's not Vanzeld Castle.
As if her mind is buffering on slow internet, it takes a solid minute before the Witch realises someone is standing before her (rather disapprovingly). ❝ Ah. Hi. ❞

Uttarakhand: A Tapestry Woven with Nature, Adventure, and Spirituality
Tumblr media
Cradled in the majestic embrace of the Himalayas, on the northwest boundary of uttarakhand tour packages from ahmedabad, one realizes that the heart here swells in resonance with the landscapes of yore. Pristine valleys engulfing life-giving rivers flowing from glistening peaks, their snow-capped pyramids piercing the bright azure sky, and history speaks louder from ancient temples—this is Uttarakhand, land of memories. This is the essence that this state promises an unforgettable experience for every kind of traveler.
A Nature Lover's Paradise:
Nature lovers' paradise, Uttarakhand is. Trek through forests alive with diverse wildlife, from majestic Himalayan tahr to elusive snow leopards. Stroll along meadows blooming with wildflowers, like the vibrant rhododendrons in the Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Adventure Awaits:
Adrenaline junkies have their dreamland at Uttarakhand, which offers a playground to them. Take a ride on the Ganges River and descend a wave of its rapids, where your heart will get jolted. For those in winter mode, go towards Auli, a pleasantly picturesque ski resort that wraps the valley in the snow-smothered highlands. You have to test your skills on challenging slopes or simply revel in the breathtaking panorama.
A Spiritual Sanctuary:
Uttarakhand is steeped in spirituality. Pay homage at revered Hindu pilgrimage sites like Haridwar and Rishikesh, where the sacred Ganges river flows. Witness the aarti, a mesmerizing evening ritual of lamps offered to the river—a spectacle that will leave you spellbound. Find serenity at serene ashrams dedicated to yoga and meditation, finding inner peace amidst the tranquility of the Himalayas.
Unveiling the Gems of Uttarakhand:
1. The Enchanting Hill Stations:
Uttarakhand boasts charming hill stations, each with its unique character. Mussoorie, the "Queen of Hills," has breathtaking views and colonial-era architecture. For leisure, navigate along the shimmering lake town of Nainital, located on a scenery-lined promenade, or simply sail through a leisurely boat ride. If you're in for a more relaxed getaway, journey to Munnar, a hill station endowed with rolling tea plantations and some truly unforgettable sunsets.
3. A Glimpse into Local Culture:
Attune to the rhythm and charm of the Uttarakhand culture. Discover the art of folk dances, which is different from the style of Delhi and Mumbai: for instance, you can witness the Garhwali and Kumaoni styles. Taste Uttarakhand cuisine that is rich, rustic, and incredibly popular with the locals. Sample dishes like Kumaoni Bhatt ki churma (pounded millet) and Garhwali Aloo Gutke (potato curry) as you savor this country's local flavors.
Beyond the Tourist Trail:
Uttarakhand has secret treasures to be explored. Try out Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides a home to various sorts of birds and dangling species. Explore the ancient ruins of Kangra Fort, one of the most popular historical treasures. For a completely offbeat experience, visit the peaceful villages of Chakrata or Chopta, which present awe-inspiring natural beauty and peaceful surroundings.
Planning Your Uttarakhand Adventure:
Uttarakhand's charm unfolds throughout the year, but the ideal visit hinges on what you seek in your adventure.
Summers (March-June) are quite comfortable and are the best for sightseeing and adventure. Monsoons (July-September) are painting the land green and create a wonderful view but can create landslides. [ad_1] Fasten your seat belts as we unveil the best road trip destinations in 2024. Experience sublime scenery, exotic wildlife encounters and diverse cultures on the best road trips in the world.   LAST UPDATE: 22 Dec 2023 Anywhere We Roam is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support - Paul & Mark. We love a good road trip. The joy of crossing wide open spaces, with complete freedom. The ability to be where we want when we want, and discover new places on our own timetable. A well-crafted road trip enables you to catch sunrise or sunset, beat the crowds, and generally pile as many experiences as possible into each precious day.   We’ve put together our favourite road trips to help inspire your next adventure. From winding mountain roads to sun-kissed coastal highways, here are some of the best road trips in the world.   NAMIBIA Namibia may be the best road trip country in the world. Easy-to-drive gravel tracks crisscross a vast wilderness of remarkable wildlife and natural wonders. At Sandwich Harbour towering sand dunes drop into crashing oceans. In Sossusvlei, dead black trees are baked into the earth. Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world. Etosha National Park is an exciting and affordable safari park. The Skeleton Coast has vast open horizons, shipwrecks and a huge seal colony. Namibia has worked hard to conserve its wildlife. Take a road trip there and you’ll learn about their conservation sacrifices and help support their progress. Read more – 2-week Namibia itinerary. SOSSUSVLEI ICELAND Iceland is a unique destination. Perched on the mid-Atlantic ridge where the Earth’s crust is thin, it’s a volcanic wonderland. Black lava fields drop from towering volcanos, sulphurous vents scar the land and colourful mountains rise above crystal-blue lakes. There are various road trips in Iceland based on your level of adventure. Visit geysers, waterfalls, the Fagradalsfjall eruption site, and geothermal pools in the southwest. Alternatively, complete the Ring Road over 10 days where you’ll visit glacial lagoons, whale-watching hot spots, black beaches, and ice caves.    If you’re feeling adventurous, hire a 4×4 and head into the central highlands. We have more suggestions in our Iceland itinerary guide. VESTRAHORN, ICELAND USA CANYONS & RED ROCK In our opinion, the best road trip in the USA is through the canyons and deserts of Utah and Arizona. Start in Las Vegas before heading across to the Grand Canyon. Stop off at the mesmerizing mesas of Monument Valley, then continue on to Canyonlands which has some of the best hiking in the country. Just across the highway, Arches National Park has thin arches of rock that somehow defy gravity. Looping back toward Vegas, pass the white sandstone cliffs of Capitol Reef, and the slot canyons of Escalante, before reaching Bryce National Park. Finally, head to Zion Canyon to attempt the treacherous Angels’ Landing hike before returning back to Vegas. CANYONLANDS ITALIAN DOLOMITES Is there any better mountain scenery in the world than the Italian Dolomites? Soaring spires of rock rise above swaying alpine meadows. Turquoise lakes reflect dark forests and jagged peaks. The whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and can easily be explored on a 7-day Dolomites road trip. Cortina d’Ampezzo is your base for hiking the three towers of Tre Cime di Lavaredo and rowing on the waters of Lago di Braies. At Val di Funes beautiful churches sit amongst the fields still using traditional farming techniques. While at Val Gardena cable cars rise to the highest alpine meadow in Europe and an other-worldly scene of jagged peaks. DOLOMITES, ITALY NC 500 The NC500 loops around the coast of northern Scotland. Approximately 500 miles long, it starts and ends in Inverness. In between, the single-lane track traverses blind summits, 180-degree hairpins, and steep gradients.
The views are staggering with wild craggy mountains on one side and the surging sea on the other. There are castles to explore, white sand beaches, and photogenic highland cattle. Try a tipple from the local distillery and take a journey on the Harry Potter steam train. The most dramatic section of the entire NC500 loop is in northern Assynt between Kylesku and Lochinver. NC500, SCOTLAND ATLAS MOUNTAINS Morocco is a surprisingly excellent road trip destination. After starting in Marrakech, follow the old camel train over the Atlas Mountains to find traditional Berber villages nestled into the foothills of spectacular snow-covered mountains. Dropping over the high passes, you’ll encounter deep gorges of red rock, green oasis and medieval walled towns. Head deeper into the mountains to discover how villages survive with just basic essentials. The end of the road is the mighty Sahara and an endless sweep of sand dunes. Driving in Morocco is much easier than you may think. Navigation outside the cities is easy and the roads are always getting better. After the earthquake in 2023, a Morocco road trip is a great way to support the recovery. OUNILA VALLEY, ATLAS MOUNTAINS MOROCCO NORWAY’S FJORDLAND Norway is renowned for its majestic fjords. These deep, narrow inlets of the sea, flanked by steep cliffs and mountains make a scenic destination for a road trip. The roads are in excellent condition and there’s a great mix of medieval towns, modern art, and dramatic viewpoints. Hike to ledges peering over narrow fjords, search for Musk Ox and Arctic Fox on wild plateaus, kayak through narrow fjords or hike across glaciers. It’s one of our favourite road trip destinations. We completed a 10-day Norway road trip a few years ago and loved it so much we are heading back in 2024.   LYSEFJORD GREAT OCEAN ROAD The Great Ocean Road is one of the most awe-inspiring road trips in the world. Meandering along Australia’s southern coast, it showcases charming beach towns, lush rainforests, and dramatic cliffs. The undisputed highlight is the Twelve Apostles, towering rock formations that rise tall against the backdrop of the Southern Ocean’s surging waves. But there’s much more to enjoy than just the stunning coastal scenery. Hike to breathtaking waterfalls, spot indigenous wildlife (like koalas and kangaroos), explore the rainforest on an adventure tour, or take surfing lessons on some of Australia’s best waves. The road trip only takes 3 days. But you could team it with a few nights in Melbourne or head up to Sydney for an excellent city break. GREAT OCEAN ROAD ANYWHERE WE ROAM ISREADER-SUPPORTED Booking your trip via the links on this page earns us a small commission at no extra cost to you. You can also buy us a coffee. Big thanks – Paul & Mark. INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK [ad_2] Source link

Monday September 18, 2023
Nice morning - yoga and breakfast and we were in the library at 8:30am to pick up our lunch boxes, whatever snacks we wanted for the day, and to have our daily briefing.
Jenn described that there are 282 Munro’s (mountains over 3000 feet) in Scotland and it’s sport to “bag” them all! We’ll walk on the foothills of a few of them, but not to the top. Some people vie for bagging them in record time in a self propelled manner - cycling or paddling to reach them!
The leaders decided not to offer the 11 mile hike today due to the rain last night. They’re concerned about slippery conditions. All 17 of us opted for the eight-mile, 1000 ft gain (most of it in the beginning) option. They enlisted the Local Taxi Driver, Donald McDonald (supposedly they’re two of them in town) to help with the shuttle today.
It was a quick 15 minute drive to the trailhead. Keith had said we might meet a Stag named “Collin” at the car park, and he was there to greet us and ask for a handout. I was kind of shocked when Keith fed him a banana. Seems wrong to encourage what should be a wild animal in that manner! Jenn said the locals look after him year around and a vet even comes by to check on him. Still seemed wrong.
We climbed a bit, then as we overlooked and old homestead, Keith gave us a chat on “Highland Clearances.” Ruins like the one we were viewing, are known in Scotland as “scars on the land”. After Industrial Revolution, the land was “cleared” of original landowners - many were offered one-way tickets to US / Australia / Patagonia. If they didn’t leave, the “sheriff” tore off the roof and burned the house. The land was developed into large hunting lodges and sheep grazing. Scotland’s system of land ownership is said to be one of the world’s most inequitable: 83 percent of the land is privately owned, and about half of it is owned by just 500 families - many not from Scotland originally, or living outside of Scotland.
People in this area had a great cultural hub - exported whisky. Many sheep herders from this area did go to Patagonia, and came back. The old traditions are being reestablished, which is refreshing.
Right to Roam - runs deep with Scottish people! Before “The Clearances,” many Scottish families earned their livelihood as “sustenance farmers” on public lands. Now land ownership is concentrated in a few hands, but all are free to enter and landowners must maintain the trails.
Keith grabbed a handful of Spagham Moss. He squeezed it to show us how it retains water. Dried out, it can be used as a wound dressing. Compacted, it becomes a peat bog. Keith’s grandma told him be careful of the Bog man (precursor of the boogie man). Bogs can be used to pickle and preserve things (bog butter).
This area would have had trees in the medieval days - lumber used for building and fires. Landowners now keep it open as a heather meadow for hunting purposes.
Jenn talked a lot, or rather, wondered out loud, about the creation of this landscape - water and glaciers, sedimentary rock and sandstone. It’s clear to see the glacier involvement, but were there also volcanoes and/or earthquakes? Such lovely, yet different rock and scenery. And the power of water - so much water coming out of the mountains and making its way to the sea!
A first for us while hiking, we took a break about an hour into the hike and Keith pulled out a bottle of Whisky and small paper cups. I skipped the cup and had him add a dram to my tea flask - hit the spot. As our break time was ended, it started to rain so I put my rain pants on. Since it had also gotten a little chilly, I added my puffy jacket under my rain jacket thinking I’d take it off in a bit … I didn’t!
The group started splintering, Kelli had a busted boot and Keith tried to tape it up for her, but it slowed them down. We got behind 4 others and the ladies seemed to be having a tough time with the terrain and were taking it slow. We all stepped aside to let some crazy mountain bikers through, and Jeff and I took the opportunity to pass them and work on catching up with the others (the 4 from WI and the 3 ladies). We caught them, but then had a stop in the rain so Jeff and I decided to sit and eat some lunch. Jules was there too, having hiked up from the end.
We continued our hike, odd being all alone now, but we enjoyed the solitude and the trail was obvious so we didn’t have concerns of being lost. The rain came and went, but we were warm inside our rain suits. The river grew larger and the number of waterfalls dumping into it increased in numbers and volume - very spectacular.
We reached the parking lot and found two Backroads vans (a third had driven away just as we reached the end of the trail). John and Rhydian (the newlyweds) were there, along with the coolers full of drinks. I grabbed a Gin and Tonic and climbed in the van as the rain increased and I wanted to finish my lunch! About 15 minutes later, Jules came back and picked up the 4 of us and delivered us back to the hotel.
We went up to our room. Jeff showered, then I took a long, not bath. I could barely stand afterwards - maybe it was too hot. I laid on the bed trying to cool off enough to get dressed with JT napped. We dressed, grabbed some umbrellas and walked to another bar/restaurant on property for a wine tasting session, followed by dinner.
The wine tasting was led by Shane, originally from France. He came to The Torridon six years ago for a six month gig, but fell in love with it here. He said what he likes best is the people are so nice! He added “you know how we are in France!” We tried three difference single malts - I liked all, but preferred the non-peaty varieties. Here are some other facts we learned:
Five Types of Scotch
Single Malt
Blended Malt Scotch Wiskey
Single Grain (corn etc added to Barley)
Blended grain
Blended scotch (Johnny Walker Red)
France is the top consumer of Scotch Whiskys
The Angels Share - check out the movie
We had a nice dinner sitting with John and Rhydian, learning more about them. Afterwards, we headed back to the main building and had a nightcap (Scottish version of Bailey’s on the rocks) and chatted more with Shane.

The Peaches along the Georgia Golf Trail
Tumblr media
Of the 20+ golf courses on the Georgia Golf Trail, nine of them are tucked away in nine of Georgia’s state parks.  While some of these golf courses may be off the beaten path, so to speak, they are worth making the effort to go play. “Our state park golf courses in Georgia are terrific golf destinations.  They are incredible designs which are very well maintained and fairly priced,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, Georgia Golf Trail.  “The affiliation of these golf courses with amenity filled state parks makes them a perfect place to visit, especially with your families.” HIGHLAND WALK - There are many scenic selfie ‘hot spots’ at Highland Walk Golf Course (706-245-6770) at Victoria Bryant State Park in Royston.  At Highland Walk, there are many uphill and downhill tee shots.  The best photo ‘opp’ locale is the tee box of the signature hole -- the 17th. Arrowhead Pointe Golf Club overlooking Lake Russell ARROWHEAD POINTE - At the Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course (706-283-6000) in Elberton, visiting golfers will discover a 6,800-yard course situated on a peninsula within the Richard B. Russell State Park.  Arrowhead Pointe deserves to be called the ‘Crown Jewel’ of the Georgia Golf Trail.  Here, 10 of the 18 holes border Lake Richard B. Russell. THE CREEK - The Creek Golf Course (706-557-3006) at Hard Labor Creek State Park in Social Circle is a joy to play.  Here, the sternest test is the tee shot on the par-four 10th hole, formerly the opening hole, which used to be considered “the hardest first starting hole in Georgia.” BRAZELL’S CREEK - The Brazell’s Creek Golf Course (912-577-7745) at Jack Hill State Park in Reidsville is a well-designed par-71 layout.  At Brazell’s Creek, a 1,500-yard winding bridge through a canopy of trees connects the front nine with the back nine. The back nine was built on a windswept, open landscape with a links-style look.  The front nine is tree-lined, and the greens have some creative contours. THE LAKES - The Lakes Golf Course (912-285-6154) at Laura S. Walker Park in Waycross is the southernmost golf course on the Georgia Golf Trail.  It features large, undulating greens. The fairways and landing areas are defined with gentle, links-style mounds that accent the course’s three large lakes.  Loblolly pines are a common sight at the Lakes GC, which is an easy course to walk. MEADOW LINKS - The Meadow Links Golf Course (229-768-3714) opened in the George T. Bagby State Park in Fort Gaines in 1998.  Golf Digest ranked Meadow Links as “the nation’s sixth-best new affordable public course.”  Each day, when the sun sets in the west, the views resemble a picture postcard. Explore The Wonders Of Nature and experience the comfort Of Brastown Valley Resort and Spa. BRASSTOWN VALLEY RESORT & SPA - Golf at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa (706-379-9900) is refreshing, delightful, and scenic.  The views of the surrounding mountains from the golf course are stunning.  This golf course is in terrific shape.  Afterward, get a massage at the Equani Spa, swim in the indoor pool, eat at Brassie’s Grill, spend the night at the resort, and wake up next door and do it all again!  It's a total escape! WALLACE ADAMS - Once you arrive at the Wallace Adams Golf Course (229-868-7474), located in the Little Ocmulgee State Park outside McRae, you’ll quickly see that you’ll want to play this course more than you had originally intended.  This golf course has an Augusta National Golf Club look and feel to it.  And it’s true.  The only things missing are patrons, leaderboards, and cameras from CBS.  This golf course is nicknamed ‘Little O.’  You will enjoy the chance of going low at Little O! GEORGIA VETERANS - The Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course (800-459-1230), located at the Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Course near Cordele, has been labeled the “best value in the South.”  Once you walk off the 18th green, head to the Cypress Grill.  You can relive your experiences on the “best value in the South.” For more information about these golf courses in many of Georgia’s state parks, access gastateparks.org or GeorgiaGolfandTravel.com.
