Hijikata Tōshirō
➵ At first, Hijikata might be a bit taken aback by his partner's sudden displays of affection. He's used to being the one in charge and doesn't always know how to respond when someone shows him kindness. But deep down, he appreciates the attention and secretly enjoys the feeling of his partner's fingers running through his hair.
➵ Hijikata might try to hide his softer side from his partner, but Gintoki sees right through him. Whenever Hijikata's partner scratches his head, Gintoki can't help but tease him about it. "Looks like you're getting soft, Hijikata-kun," he'll say with a grin. Hijikata will scowl and tell him to mind his own business, but he secretly likes the attention.
➵ At times, Hijikata's partner might catch him off guard by being more cuddly than usual. Hijikata is used to being alone and doesn't always know how to react when someone wants to be close to him. But he's secretly grateful for the companionship and will let his guard down when he feels comfortable around his partner.
➵ When his partner scratches his head, he might let out a soft sigh of contentment. It's a small gesture, but it means a lot to him. He'll lean into their touch and close his eyes, letting himself relax for a moment. But he'll never admit how much he enjoys it, not even to himself.
➵ Sometimes, Hijikata's partner might catch him off guard by being too affectionate in public. He's not used to PDA and doesn't want to draw attention to himself, but his partner doesn't seem to care. Gintoki might see them and make a joke about it, but Hijikata will just scowl and tell him to f*ck off. Deep down, though, he likes the attention and the feeling of being wanted.
➵ And sometimes, when his partner scratches his head, he'll involuntarily let out a small moan of pleasure. He'll quickly catch himself and clear his throat, trying to cover up his embarrassment. Gintoki might overhear and tease him mercilessly about it, but Hijikata will just scowl and tell him to sh*t up.
➵ If Hijikata's partner is particularly persistent in their displays of affection, he might start to get flustered. He's not used to being the one on the receiving end of so much attention, and he doesn't always know how to handle it. He'll start fidgeting and avoiding eye contact, trying to find a way out of the situation without hurting his partner's feelings.
➵ On rare occasions, when Hijikata is feeling particularly vulnerable, he might initiate physical contact with his partner. He'll never admit it out loud, but sometimes he just needs to feel someone's warmth and reassurance. He'll wrap his arms around his partner and hold them close, relishing in the feeling of their bodies pressed together.
➵ When Hijikata's partner is being cuddly, Gintoki might make jokes about them being a couple. Hijikata will bristle at the implication and tell Gintoki—how many times has he told that sperm haired a**hole to quit bothering them already?—to go and jump off a building. Deep down, however, he'll feel a flicker of something warm in his chest. He'll quickly squash the feeling, though, telling himself that it's just silly sentimentality.
➵ Despite his tough exterior, Hijikata secretly enjoys being taken care of. If he's feeling stressed or overwhelmed, his partner might offer to give him a massage or cook him a meal. Hijikata will grumble and protest, but secretly he'll be touched by their kindness. He'll never admit it out loud, though, not wanting to seem weak or needy.
➵ Overall, Hijikata might act tough and unapproachable, but he secretly craves the attention and affection of his partner. When they scratch his head or cuddle with him, he'll try to hide his softer side, but he can't help but feel grateful for the companionship.
You were sitting on the couch with Hijikata after a long day of work, absently scratching his head while he read a book. He seemed to be enjoying it, but you could tell he was trying to hide it.
"What are you doing?" he grumbled, swatting your hand away.
"Just giving you a little scratch," you said, smiling at him. "You seemed tense."
"I'm fine," he said, but he didn't push your hand away when you started scratching again.
As you worked your fingers through his hair, you noticed his breathing start to slow down and his eyes start to droop. He leaned into your touch, letting out a small sigh of contentment.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" you teased.
"I'm not enjoying anything," he said, but you could hear the smile in his voice.
After a few minutes, you stopped scratching his head and instead wrapped your arms around him, pulling him close. He tensed up at first, but then relaxed into your embrace.
"What are you doing?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
"Just cuddling," you said, burying your face in his neck. "Is that okay?"
"I guess," he said, but you could tell he was secretly enjoying it. He wrapped his arms around you and held you close, his chin resting on the top of your head.
For a while, you just sat there in comfortable silence, enjoying each other's company. Then, Hijikata broke the silence.
"Thank you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"For what?" you asked, looking up at him.
"For... this," he said, gesturing to your embrace. "I... I appreciate it."
You smiled at him and leaned in for a kiss, which he eagerly returned. As you pulled away, he rested his forehead against yours.
"Don't tell anyone about this," he said, but you could tell he was joking.
"Your secret is safe with me," you said, grinning at him.
As you settled back into your cuddle, you could feel Hijikata's breathing start to slow down and even out. You knew he was falling asleep, but you didn't want to disturb him. You stayed there, wrapped up in each other's arms, until you both fell asleep on the couch.

Kamui
➵ Confusion and Discomfort - Kamui is not used to receiving affection from anyone, so when his partner starts scratching his head or cuddling with him, he might feel uncomfortable and unsure of how to react. He might pull away or try to escape from their grasp, not because he doesn't appreciate their affection, but because he's not sure how to handle it.
➵ Appreciation - Despite his tough exterior, Kamui is not completely devoid of emotions. If his partner scratches his head affectionately, he might feel a sense of warmth and gratitude. However, he may not show it openly and may only nod his head or give a small smile to acknowledge their gesture.
➵ Embarrassment - Kamui is not used to being the center of attention or receiving affection, so when his partner starts cuddling with him or scratching his head, he might feel embarrassed or self-conscious. He may try to shrug them off or play it cool, but deep down, he's secretly enjoying the attention.
➵ Protective - If Kamui's partner is being more cuddly than usual, he might become protective of them. As a member of the Yato clan, Kamui has a strong sense of loyalty and will do whatever it takes to protect those he cares about. He might wrap his arms around them tightly or give them a reassuring pat on the back to let them know he's there for them.
➵ Vulnerability - Kamui is not used to showing his softer side to anyone, but when his partner scratches his head or cuddles with him, he might let his guard down and show a more vulnerable side. He might open up to them about his past or his feelings, something he would never do with anyone else.
➵ Surprise - Kamui is not used to people showing him affection, so when his partner scratches his head or cuddles with him, he might be surprised at first. He might even ask them why they're doing it or what their intentions are, as he's not used to this kind of attention.
➵ Gratitude - Despite his tough exterior, Kamui is not completely emotionless. If his partner scratches his head affectionately or cuddles with him, he might feel a sense of gratitude and appreciation. He may not show it openly, but he would remember the gesture and repay it in his own way.
➵ Conflicted - Kamui's upbringing as a member of the Yato clan has taught him to suppress his emotions and never show weakness. As a result, when his partner scratches his head or cuddles with him, he might feel conflicted. He might enjoy the affection, but at the same time, he might feel like it's a weakness and try to resist it.
➵ Self-conscious - If Kamui's partner scratches his head or cuddles with him in public, he might become protective of his reputation. Kamui is feared and respected by many, and he wouldn't want anyone to see him in a vulnerable state. He might gently push his partner away or give them a warning look to let them know that he's not comfortable with public displays of affection.
➵ Acceptance - Despite his initial confusion and discomfort, Kamui might eventually learn to accept his partner's affectionate gestures. He might even come to look forward to them, as they provide a sense of comfort and warmth that he's not used to experiencing. Over time, he might become more open and expressive with his own emotions as well.
➵ Overall, Kamui's reactions to his partner's affectionate gestures would be complex and varied, reflecting his conflicted nature and stoic exterior. However, as he grows closer to his partner and learns to trust them, he might become more open and vulnerable, showing a side of himself that few have ever seen before.
You and Kamui are laying in bed, enjoying a rare moment of peace and quiet. You've been together for a few months now, but Kamui is still not used to physical affection, and he's been keeping a bit of a distance between the two of you. But tonight, as you're both lying in bed, you suddenly feel the urge to show him some affection.
You turn to him and start to scratch his head gently. "Hey, Kamui," you say softly. "I just wanted to say that I really appreciate you. You're so strong and brave, and I feel lucky to be with you."
Kamui tenses up at your touch, his muscles going rigid. He's not used to this kind of physical intimacy, and he's not sure how to react. "What are you doing?" he asks, his voice a bit cold.
You can sense his discomfort, but you don't want to stop. You continue to scratch his head, hoping to break down his defenses a bit. "I'm just showing you some affection," you say. "I know you're not used to it, but I just wanted to let you know that I care about you."
Kamui's body relaxes slightly at your words, but he still seems uncertain. "I'm not sure I understand," he says. "Why would you care about me?"
You pause for a moment, looking into his eyes. "Because you're important to me," you say. "I love you, Kamui."
At the mention of the L-word, Kamui's eyes widen in surprise. He's never heard those words before, and he's not sure how to react. But as you continue to scratch his head and show him affection, he starts to relax a bit more. He closes his eyes and leans into your touch, allowing himself to be vulnerable for just a moment.
"I...I love you too," he finally admits, his voice barely above a whisper.
You smile and continue to scratch his head, feeling grateful for this rare moment of connection with the stoic Yato. You know that he's not used to physical affection, but you hope that with time and patience, you can break down his defenses and show him just how much you care.
(I accidentally ended up extending this! 😭 I was just so sad!)
As you scratch Kamui's head, you can feel his hair starting to loosen up. It's a strange feeling, being so close to him like this. Kamui is usually so closed off, so distant, that you never thought you'd be able to get this close to him. But here you are, lying next to him in bed, running your fingers through his hair.
"I know you're not used to this," you say softly. "But I just wanted to show you that I care. You're such an amazing person, Kamui. You're so strong and brave, and I feel lucky to be with you."
Kamui doesn't say anything in response, but you can feel his body starting to relax. You continue to scratch his head, hoping to break down his defenses a bit more.
"You don't have to be so tough all the time," you say. "It's okay to be vulnerable. It's okay to show your emotions."
Kamui opens his eyes and looks at you, his gaze intense. "I don't want to be weak," he says. "I don't want to be vulnerable."
You understand where he's coming from. Kamui was raised in a violent, chaotic environment, where weakness was not tolerated. But you also know that he needs to learn how to let his guard down, at least around you.
"You don't have to be weak," you say. "You can be strong and vulnerable at the same time. And you don't have to do it all at once. It's okay to take it slow."
Kamui considers your words for a moment, then closes his eyes again and leans into your touch. You can feel his breaths slowing down, becoming more relaxed. It's a rare moment of intimacy, and you cherish it.
"You know," Kamui says after a few minutes of silence. "You're the only person who's ever shown me this kind of affection. I don't know how to react."
You smile and keep scratching his head. "It's okay," you say. "You don't have to react. Just let me show you how much I care."
Kamui doesn't say anything in response, but he keeps his eyes closed and lets you continue to scratch his head. It's a small gesture, but it means a lot to both of you. You know that it will take time for Kamui to get used to physical affection, but you're willing to be patient. You love him, and you're not going anywhere.

Sakata Gintoki
➵ Gintoki's initial reaction to his partner scratching his head affectionately would likely be one of discomfort or annoyance. Although he may secretly enjoy the physical affection, he would likely try to play it cool and act nonchalant about it, making sarcastic comments or snarky remarks in response.
➵ However, as his partner continues to scratch his head and show him affection, Gintoki may gradually warm up to the idea and become more receptive to their gestures. He may even find himself leaning into their touch and letting out a contented sigh, although he would still try to mask his vulnerability with humor and sarcasm.
➵ If his partner were to become more cuddly than usual, Gintoki would likely become even more uncomfortable and unsure of how to react. He may try to push them away or create some distance between them, but deep down, he would appreciate the intimacy and affection. He may even become more affectionate in return, teasing or poking fun at his partner to cover up his true feelings.
➵ Gintoki's tough exterior and sarcastic wit may make it difficult for him to express his emotions openly, but his actions and subtle gestures may reveal his true feelings. For example, he may find himself unconsciously reaching out to touch his partner's hand or shoulder, or he may become more protective and affectionate towards them in private.
➵ Ultimately, Gintoki's reaction to his partner's affection would depend on the circumstances and his mood at the time. While he may try to play it cool and act aloof, his partner's affectionate gestures would likely have a positive impact on him, reminding him of the importance of human connection and emotional intimacy.
➵ Gintoki may try to hide his vulnerability by responding with sarcasm or teasing his partner. He may make jokes about being a "tsundere" or act like their affection doesn't affect him, but his partner would likely see through his facade and recognize his true feelings.
➵ Although Gintoki is not one to express his emotions openly, he may find himself feeling more comfortable and at ease with his partner's affection over time. He may become more receptive to physical touch and gestures of intimacy, even initiating them himself on occasion.
➵ Gintoki's past experiences with loss and betrayal have made him somewhat guarded and distrustful of others, but his partner's affection would likely help to break down some of his walls and build trust between them. He may even become more open and vulnerable with his partner, sharing more of his past and his fears with them.
➵ His loyalty and protectiveness towards his loved ones are two of his defining traits, and his partner's affection would only strengthen these qualities. He may become more invested in their well-being and happiness, going out of his way to make them feel loved and appreciated.
➵ At the end of the day, Gintoki's reaction to his partner's affection would likely be a mixture of humor, sarcasm, and genuine warmth. Although he may struggle to express his emotions openly, his partner's affection would be a source of comfort and security for him, reminding him that he is not alone in the world.
You were sitting next to Gintoki on the couch, watching TV together. As the show went on, you found yourself absentmindedly scratching his head, running your fingers through his silver hair. Gintoki tensed up at first, looking at you with a mixture of surprise and annoyance.
"What are you doing?" he asked, pulling away slightly.
You smiled at him, continuing to scratch his head. "Just giving you some affection, Gintoki. You looked like you could use it."
Gintoki grumbled something under his breath, but you could tell that he was secretly enjoying your touch. He leaned into your hand, letting out a contented sigh. "Whatever. Just don't make it a habit, okay?"
You chuckled, continuing to scratch his head. "No promises, Gintoki. I kind of like it."
Gintoki rolled his eyes, but he didn't pull away this time. Instead, he leaned back into the couch, letting you scratch his head in peace. As the show continued to play in the background, you could feel him relaxing more and more, his muscles untensing beneath your touch.
After a few minutes, Gintoki finally spoke up again. "You know, I'm not used to this kind of affection," he said quietly. "It's kind of nice, though."
You smiled, continuing to scratch his head. "I'm glad you're enjoying it, Gintoki. You deserve some love and affection, too."
Gintoki snorted. "Yeah, right. As if I need that kind of weakness in my life."
You shook your head, still smiling. "You're not weak, Gintoki. You're one of the strongest people I know. And everyone needs a little love and affection sometimes."
Gintoki didn't respond, but you could see a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth. You continued to scratch his head in silence, enjoying the warmth and intimacy of the moment. Gintoki may have been a tough and sarcastic person on the outside, but beneath his rough exterior, you knew that he was a kind and loving person at heart.
(Here's a scenario where Gintoki's partner is being more cuddly than usual. As you can see, I got a little bit excited writing about him.)
You were lying in bed with Gintoki, cuddled up against his side. Normally, he wasn't one for cuddling or physical touch, but tonight was different. He had his arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you closer to him, and you could feel his breath warm against your neck.
"Are you okay, Gintoki?" you asked, running your fingers through his hair.
He didn't respond at first, but you could feel him nodding against your shoulder. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said quietly.
You could tell that something was bothering him, but you didn't press the issue. Instead, you continued to stroke his hair, letting the silence stretch out between you. As you lay there together, you could feel Gintoki's body relaxing more and more, his breathing slowing down.
After a few minutes, Gintoki finally spoke up again. "Thanks for being here, [Name]," he said softly.
You smiled, kissing the top of his head. "Of course, Gintoki. I'll always be here for you."
Gintoki didn't respond, but you could feel him snuggling closer to you, his body warm against yours. You continued to stroke his hair, feeling a sense of contentment wash over you. Even though Gintoki was a tough and sarcastic person on the outside, you knew that.

You ever lie awake at night and think about how intimate GinHiji is? Like yeah everyone and their grandmother already knows that they’re narrative foils and all that, but do you ever just. Stop. And think, “Wow, when Gintoki looks at Hijikata, he sees a version of himself that never lost?”
Of course, Hijikata has lost things (his place with his brother, a home), but he hasn’t lost his general. He certainly hasn’t had to kill him with his own hands.
And that parallel is made very obvious in the Farewell Shinsengumi arc, but once you read through the manga again, it’s clear that Gintoki has been at least somewhat aware of this parallel from the beginning, from their second meeting on the rooftop, when Hijikata challenged him to a duel because he disgraced Kondou, his general, his comrade in arms. “Anyone who disgraces the Shinsengumi... I’ll make mincemeat out of them!”
Every subsequent interaction after that has just made the similarities more apparent, not only between themselves, but also between their respective groups: The Shinsengumi and the Shoka Sonjuku. The Shinsengumi and the Joui 4. The Shinsengumi and the Yorozuya.
And the last one’s important, because it shows that Hijikata doesn’t only represent what Gintoki was, he represents what Gintoki is trying to be again. He is not only the past, but the present, a kindred spirit walking the same road, who he can draw strength from. That is why their roads cross time and time again, not only in the serious moments when the Shinsengumi is at jeopardy (and isn’t it interesting how only Gintoki is present during the Mitsuba and the Baragaki arcs?) but also during the ridiculous moments, the goofy moments, where they’re just wreaking havoc in Edo, making connections, living life.
That’s why everything that happens to Gintoki ends up echoing around to Hijikata, and vice versa.
It’s Gintoki and Katsura pointing their swords at Takasugi at the end of the Benizakura Arc, saying, “We will cut you down!” to Kondou punching Okita during the Mitsuba arc, saying, “If one of us goes astray, the other two will beat some sense into him,” to Gintoki in the Shogun Assasination Arc, punching Takasugi, reminding him that he’s still a student of the Shoka Sonjuku.
It’s Kondou saying, “Why does he [Hijikata] always put the burden on himself? Always trying to play the bad guy,” to Takasugi saying, “We put the burden on you... You bore that sin,” to Gintoki telling Takasugi, “I don’t remember choosing you. All that happened was... I knew what he [Shouyou] held dear,” to Hijikata telling the rest of the Shinsengumi, “He told us to live... I don’t want you guys to die, that feeling is the same as Kondou-san’s.”
It’s how Itou’s death in the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc foreshadows Takasugi’s death in the Final Arc: Both are comrades in arms who had gone astray, but although they’ve made their way back to the right path, they’re already at death’s door. Hijikata kills Itou in a duel to allow him die as an honorable warrior instead of as a traitor. Gintoki kills Takasugi in a duel in a way that allows him to die as a student of Shoka Sonjuku who succeeded in avenging Shouyou instead of as a vessel carrying Utsuro's being.
It’s Itou telling Hijikata, as he grabs his hand to save him from falling to his death, “I hate you and one day I’ll kill you, so don’t die here,” to Takasugi telling Gintoki and Katsura as he saves them from falling to their deaths, “We may hate each other and try to kill each other, but still they’re bonds we can’t sever.”
It’s Gintoki helping Hijikata time and time again, reminding him who he is, delivering him things (spicy crackers for Mitsuba, a letter from Tetsu, a punch for Kondou), helping him get to where he needs to be... and Hijikata trying to return the favor as much as he can, running to Hagi to find him, delivering his bokuto in battle, kicking his ass over the gap so that he can make it to Shouyou, Shinpachi, and Kagura.
It’s Hijikata telling Gintoki, after finding out he’s Shiroyasha, “There’s something that only we can do. We can stop people from making the same mistakes we did.”

Oh, yeah, here's a second post about Gintama's Live-action adaptations. I'm a total completionist so I not only watched the second movie, I had to find the Mitsuba arc and then @sebfreak pointed me to the other miniseries, so... (sorry if it's a long post, while I'm not drawing my brain can't stop)
Right, the Mitsuba arc
Loved they include the spicy parfait scene, I mean, the cgi is what it is, but I have a lot of respect for 'em even trying,
Zaki's afro? chef's kiss, simply delicious
I mean:
Tumblr media
Also, Hijikata's reacion to the spicy snacks? delicious. These guys are good at funny faces.
Loved the Gin's pretending to be sleeping scene, missed the part about the black circles under his eyes, tho.
Tumblr media
(Look, it was very difficult to find the three parts of the drama, I got 'em from 3 different places and every place has it's own subtitles on indonesian or french. Also, the quality? oh my, the quality was terrible by the third part)
This is a fucking sad arc, daaaamn, and this being a drama... well, it's even more dramatic. I mean, that last scene on the roof? it always breaks my heart.
Tumblr media
And now, for something completely different, the mini-series thingy.
The episodes they choose to adapt are... interesting, I mean who in their right mind chooses those three? okay, I love how weird the decision is.
I love the details on the one were Kagura can't sleep, I mean, the Dragon Ball mangas, the justaway alarm clock, Gintoki's pajamas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Holy shit, the make up, the Napoleon thing, the radio drama, "I didn't get enough sleep, and I'm starting to hear strange things"; I love this episode.
And then, the one were Hijikata can't smoke, maaaan, this episode was like a fever dream in the anime and the live-action is so on point. The whole Namek planet thing, "I'm going to defeat Breeza!", "I'm trying to revive Grillin!", the cgi is not that bad, I mean, slimy grimmy Shen Long could've looked worst. Also, I insist, Hijikata's actor is so stupid good at expressions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, finally, the dentist episode, another fever dream. I'm very afraid of the dentist so, yeah, can confirm that People of All Ages Hate the Dentist!. Also, again, their expressions!; Hasegawa!; the treatment! This episode may have worsen my fear of the dentist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the way this live-actions thingies keep the whole Gintama spirit, I love that the first scene on the Rules are Made to be Broken movie is the still shot from Yorozuya HQ and it's just these idiots talking over it. If I've watched this on the cinema I would've cheered like the stupid weeabo I am (I told a friend yesterday "I went from 0 to otaku in like 3 moths" so there).
Tumblr media
I'm so thankful for Zura's piracy thing disclaimer.
Otose!!! OMFG, I love her!
"Work! We have to find work, Gin-san!" "I don't want to!" MOOD FOREVER!
Tumblr media
I love how they all try very hard not to laugh in the scenes with this guy, they failed, but I love it.
We've already talked about Zura's gender but... come on! how fucking amazing they are??!
Oh, and the Katsurap and then Pako (I mean, they changed her name here, but I still like Pako more 'cause Ginko is a different character, come on!) carrying her on her back.
Tumblr media
"It's the Shogun!" aaah, you didn't fail me, Rules are Made to be Broken.
Tumblr media
And then the hairdresser thing. I can't stop thanking you, Rules are Made to be Broken.
I guess the whole chip on Toshi's neck is weird, but maybe the whole sword thing would've been longer to explain so probably it was best for simplicity.
On that note, "Sakatashi"
"You're a Neet. You're thinking like a total Neet!" "Is that so? You guys look like pretty big Neets too." "Who the hell is a Neet?! We are hard-working workers now!"
So, yeah, I can forgive the the chip thing ONLY for the scene at Gengai's shop. Toshi, pilot the EVA.
I can't believe how close to the original is the scene were Gintoki catches Toshi by his neck and they all run away from those Shinsengumi guys.
"You tax thieves" <3
Tumblr media
this look badass, I mean...
We have little Takasugi action in this one, but hell, I don't care, I love his scenes with Bansai. Also, Bansai, of course.
Now, this is were I feel this goes weird, Bansai's gonna try to kill the (freaking) Shogun in a total different location form the train thing. It's... weird. Tho, Bansai looks amazing on his motorcycle.
I've said this a thousand time already, but I don't care, Kagura's really Gintoki's clone, I bloody love her.
Now, I don't fell Gintoki has a real motivation to go a fight Bansai in Edo, it never convinced me. I grateful for the Raccoon Bus scene, tho, I laughed like a maniac (look, I know I need to sleep more), but... dunno "then Takasugi Shinsuke will start killing people!" wasn't enough for me. Oh, and Zura, I love that they use every excuse to use Zura but still... weird?
I really like to like the first part of Gintoki vs Bansai but... too matrix~y too... the choreography is kind of cool, the shots between fights too but the whole matrix thing... I didn't like it.
BUT! the strings thing, that I liked.
And then the last scene at the dango place, I liked it a lot, I love when they did that on the anime averytime.

Takagin Discussion: Story Romantic Parallels (Part 1)
I've been wanting to make a post talking about the romantic parallels Takagin have with other more established romantic pairings in Gintama. The direct parallel with Enshou destroyed me, then I started thinking if Hijikata and Gintoki are similar... how about Hijikata and Takasugi, then found way more parallels with Hijimitsu. Then I realized there was MORE with Umibouzu and Kouka. Then accidentally found some more with Matako (whose feelings I like to think are more familial).
Warning:
Personal interpretation bias as always. I am tackling this from the standpoint that there may have been some implied romance.
I talk about Umibouzu/Kouka, Hijimitsu, Enshou and Matako.
Edit (17/2/2024): I somehow mistook Shouyou's words 'a sword is to protect your soul' to simply being 'to protect'. This makes a HUGE difference, because it means Gintoki has been fighting to understand and find himself all this time. MAN, I feel downright horrible about this - I have revised it to fit this interpretation. But this does make the parallels stand in a much better way that makes Gintoki a far more genuine, free person as he should be. It only further strengthens how Gintoki is very much a loving person. Edits have been made in the parts marked with an asterisk (*)!
Gintoki and Kouka being born different from normal people and having to fight for their survival in a place surrounded by death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both bear a title that captures the life they had to live: Corpse-Eating Demon and Master of Kouan. Both are initially mistaken for monsters that turn out to be a cute child/pretty woman in a place full of death.
However, Gintoki was taken in by Shouyou early on, so he no longer had to fight for his survival. But that event also instilled the sense of obligation in Gintoki that Kouka has--
Gintoki and Kouka being trapped to a life of solitude for their obligations and birth circumstances.*
Kouka resolved to stay on Kouan to uphold her ancestors' pride who chose to endure the harsh planet, whereas Gintoki resolved to grow strong and protect his soul with a human sword as Shouyou had told him, to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But for Kouka, this meant a life of solitude. For Gintoki, this also meant a life of solitude but in the psychological sense: to understand what it meant to protect your soul, he had to live facing the present and suppressing the true him frightened from the battlefield of corpses - the scared child who grew up in trauma. But that was much needed if he truly wanted to live, because monsters born from bloodshed can't live among humans.
This would explain the detachment both of them suffer from - which for Gintoki still shows until now while Kouka seems to recover from it after marrying Umibouzu - which is will be something I talk about later.
Then there's Kouka's inability to live away from Kouan, which could also be likened to Gintoki's inability to escape his emptiness from childhood: Kouka's bored eyes and Gintoki's dead-fish eyes, but the latter continuing on because the scared child within him is still living in solitude... because Gintoki hates talking about the past, not trying to do anything about it. Monsters can't live among humans, after all.
Takasugi and Hijikata's thorny path as children from not being able to meet the expectations of their families
Hijikata was thrown into the thorny thicket and became obsessed with strength from having witnessed the only older brother who loved him getting hurt because of him. Takasugi was already obsessed with strength from the get-go from not being able to live up to the standard bushido, and it led the two astray, not knowing what they actually wanted out of life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They became lost to strength because Takasugi was not able to live up his family's expectation and Hijikata had a taste of the helplessness of being a burden to the only family member who loved him. In a way, both were made to feel like they only brought shame to their families, and it led them to trying to find a place elsewhere with strength alone, landing them in Shoka Sonjuku and Shinsengumi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Both of them are being judged by the people they want to call family, except Takasugi already seems used to it... Takasugi was also casted out long before Hijikata by his family beating him up and disowning him.)
Takasugi and Umibouzu's unexpected meeting with someone stronger than them and becoming entranced with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Takasugi's pursuit of strength led to a chance encounter with Gintoki, who becomes his life goal of beating. Umibouzu heavily implies that his instincts were telling him to keep away from Kouka for how dangerous and strong she was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a way, Umibouzu's instincts can be likened to Takasugi's pursuit for strength covering up the humanity inside him that just wants a place to call home. Especially when Umibouzu makes it a point that he has something he has to say to Kouka as himself. Takasugi's dialogue implies how he never got to be fully honest with Gintoki, even till the very end where he insists on seeing Gintoki as someone to beat. The only honesty he could express was how he didn't want to see Gintoki's disheartened face.
And furthermore, Gintoki later jokingly takes the title of the strongest from headbutting Umibouzu, when that was Kouka's title.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gintoki and Mitsuba's unconditional acceptance of Takasugi and Hijikata
What made Takasugi fall in love anyway? His reasons are definitely closer to Hijikata, considering their similar living conditions and origins. Despite being reduced to a thorny thug and having strange tastes, even dragging her brother so brashly like that, Mitsuba still smiles and laughs at Hijikata in adoration - and Hijikata at some point fell in love with that innocence.
Tumblr media
And Gintoki was the only who accepted, faced and wanted Takasugi's obsession with strength head-on, when that was all Takasugi knew as a child.
Tumblr media
Both Hijikata and Takasugi were appreciated despite their circumstances by someone. It didn't feel like either of them had any bad intentions too, not when Gintoki and Mitsuba treated everyone the same and it was their standard behaviour. Even though Hijikata and Takasugi had been criticized for their unruly behaviour and were shames to their families, there was someone who didn't see them any differently from any other people. It isn't surprising Hijikata fell in love, and likely Takasugi too.
Gintoki and Mitsuba's love for people*
The reason Takasugi and Hijikata found such a person in the first place was because Gintoki and Mitsuba were both selfless, loving people from the start. Albeit Gintoki is definitely far more detached and distant than Mitsuba ever was (which are where his parallels with Kouka come in).
Gintoki's love for people has been a big theme of the story, even being the reason he turned down Sakamoto's invitation to space despite the tragic war. And just like Mitsuba, this love is more about wanting people to stay true to themselves and happy over their physical presence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gintoki chose to behead Shouyou, because it meant protecting what Shouyou truly wanted. Even though Gintoki loved Shouyou dearly, beheading him meant protecting his soul. Gintoki probably didn't hesitate ignoring his promise with Takasugi, because he could sense Shouyou's desire to protect his students far surpassed Takasugi's desire to protect Shouyou. That Takasugi probably just wanted to protect what Gintoki held precious. If that was really his intention, then what Gintoki held precious was the souls of his loved ones anyway, not their physical presence.
But it isn't easy. It's lonely, just as Mitsuba had her mixed feelings seeing Shinsengumi walk away, and Gintoki had shed tears at having to kill the father figure in his life for what he cherished.
But even so, both find a strong sense of joy in seeing the people they love staying true to themselves. If not, Mitsuba wouldn't have been such a good sister to Okita, and Gintoki probably wouldn't have been able to resign to just living peacefully after what he experienced as a child. Especially in Gintoki's case, when even Katsura had strayed from protecting others as his very own grandmother taught him after everything he had seen on the battlefield.
After all, everyone wants to to satiate their own ego somehow, but it seems the joy of just seeing people living the way they want overpowers that ego in both Mitsuba and Gintoki.
Gintoki and Kouka avoiding attachment to protect themselves, but end up warming up to people anyway.*
Gintoki is the very picture of detachment by living only through facing what's in front of him. Even his actions of casually throwing his textbook away contrasting Katsura and Takasugi shows how detached he is from the past too. Although he was probably the happiest back then, having been with family.
But he's also detached from the people around him. We see that in his childhood from how he reminisces looking at Katsura and Takasugi from afar, both surrounded by many children (and some official art even depicting him as distant from the others). And Gintoki is all alone, looking for another monster who is Shouyou.
Tumblr media
Even now with Yorozuya, Shinpachi had been worrying about how Gintoki never wanted to do anything. All he wants to do is protect what's in front of him - as the theme is in the entire story. He loves people, but he never properly lets them in. Even though he still had so many regrets and pains from the past that he never looks back on, which ends up leaking out to influence his choice to find Shouyou after Utsuro's death and making Shinpachi and Kagura realize that it was the wish he never told anyone. No one can be fully happy if they don't come to peace with their past. Especially when it makes you feel like you will never truly belong anywhere.
It bears a resemblance to Kouka settling for what little happiness she had in Kouan to uphold her ancestor's pride and to keep living, and only being swayed when shown a greater happiness by Umibouzu. As for Gintoki, he didn't want to lose himself to the past and so has to keep avoiding it, back in Shoka Sonjuku and even now, even if it means having to settle for a present that isn't fully him. Even if he's actually an empty monster very much like Utsuro.
Both show an inclination to distance themselves from others, as seen by how Kouka remained indifferent throughout her conversations with Umibouzu and Gintoki never talking about himself. But they end up caring too much about the people they distance themselves from, which is what ends up entirely distracting Kouka from the way she initially intended to live whereas forcing Gintoki to carry even more burdens that would obviously make it harder for him to live with his soul intact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This teaches them both that happiness in the present can only be found from letting people in. Because of this, both change their minds: Kouka decides to leave Kouan, and Gintoki decides to take on the burden of letting more people in when he had already decided he could no longer doing so. This leaves Kouka doomed to die, and Gintoki to have to fight an even harder battle to not lose himself to the past.
But this was still a far better happiness than choosing to live alone to protect yourself.
Gintoki's words that end up saving Kamui from his despair sound very much like the basis for Kouka's words to Kagura about family - you just need someone who'll stay with you, no matter how idiotic they are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Life isn't about living up to some name to feel good enough and capable to do what you want to do, which Kamui was trying to do to protect his family. This is something Kouka herself was trying to do, but learned that it didn't matter after Umibouzu kept insisting to reach her and Orochi celebrated her departure instead of punishing her.
Gintoki knew this from the get-go because he learned from Shouyou early on that it was about your soul, to not give in to the what the world around you decided for you and truly find yourself. So this stops him from losing himself to the name of the Corpse-Eating Demon, and allows him to wander lost to find the answer within the people around him, including Edo. Edo to Gintoki became what her family was to Kouka.
But unlike Kouka, a piece of Gintoki still stays alone in the past because of this very same mindset of how the present matters. Because his past isn't a commonly shared experience, he can't just share his past with people and expect to be be understood and still be treated as a normal human. Only someone who is determined to understand him like Umibouzu was with Kouka could truly drag him to the present (spoiler: Takasugi obviously).
The realization that the present is most important, not what you are outside of that, is the reason why Kouka allowed Umibouzu to be part of her life, even if it meant her physical death. And Kamui was put at ease by such values, like sleeping on his mother's lap who had once struggled like him.
Tumblr media
(I just wanna say--Kamui is such a good example of what it's like to blame yourself hard for not being able to protect family. If Takasugi's main goal was truly Shouyou, then his choices and dialogue should've been more similar to Kamui, methinks.)
Takasugi and Hijikata not feeling suited to making the person they love happy, and so instead protect their happiness from afar.
This whole discussion is already delusional enough but this is by far the most delusional and based on pure inference. But this makes most sense to explain why Takasugi thinks so much about Gintoki's suffering without telling him straight up. This what I think Takasugi's obsession with Shouyou was all about, a way to protect Gintoki's happiness.
Takasugi's actions with Tendoshuu intersects with Hijikata's actions with Tenkaiya. Both went on a suicide mission on their own against them without the people who they know would want to fight alongside with them no matter what (Kiheitai and Shinsengumi). Hijikata would kill the fiance of a dying woman out of revenge and anger at him for not making her happy, Takasugi would let the world Gintoki loves get destroyed if it meant they could go back to the past and Gintoki could be happy with Shouyou again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course there is still Takasugi's love and appreciation for Shouyou accepting him and teaching him his way of life - but it really feels only to a similar extent as Katsura. Not when he didn't say a single word about suffering without Shouyou in his clash against Gintoki to come to terms with his suffering. You can even interpret his gaze and smile upon Shouyou as feeling like he's finally made amends for his guilt at the very end--
In part 2, we talk about post-Shouyou execution Takasugi where more of the Enshou and Umibouzu parallels come in!! How his guilt towards Shouyou may be similar to one Enshou felt towards his brother.

More obscure muses ( Introduction ) series.
Fandom: Gintama.
Muse #1- Gintoki Sakata
Tumblr media
Age 27-29 ( manga and anime )
Gintoki Sakata is the main protagonist of the Gintama series. He is the founder and president of the Yorozuya, as well as a highly-skilled samurai, having fought in the Joui War in the past. During the war, he became known as the Shiroyasha (a kind of demon in Buddhism and Hinduism) due to his powerful swordsmanship, demonic appearance, white clothing, and silver hair.
Gintoki is extremely lazy. He is often seen wearing a dumb expression on his face and spends his days lounging around reading Shounen Jump whilst imparting wise and sage-like advice to his younger employees, even though he doesn't actually know what he's talking about most of the time. Due to his poverty and unwillingness to do mostly anything, he is always behind on his rent and often runs away when Otose, his landlady, comes to collect the payment. He often blows all of his savings on Pachinko and other gambling games, which Shinpachi and Kagura often scold him for.
However, even though he is lazy, Gintoki is quite dedicated to his job and tries to help people with the best of his abilities (usually in a very strange and twisted way). He is sarcastic and unattached but he values connections more than anyone in the series. For the most part, Gintoki is content with hanging out with his friends. However different aspects of his personality emerge depending on the situation. In the more comedy arcs he is characterized as cowardly and sarcastic, but in serious arcs he is a unwavering and will die for someone who he cares about. He very much enjoys, joking, being passionate, and arguing about stupid stuff so he and his friends at the end of a day can have a good laugh.
Gintoki's past continues to influence who he is and how he acts. He admitted to Umibozu that he believes that having a loving family is all someone really needs in life, due to his lack of a family during his childhood. He is very respectful of the memory of his teacher Yoshida Shouyou due to his actions (the arrest of his teacher is one of the main reasons he joined the Joui War. The other was to protect his friends who also joined the war).
His inability to protect many of his friends in the Joui War still haunts him, especially the crushing guilt and regret that consumed him. As a result, he is very protective of his current friends and holds very little value to his own life. This carelessness can be seen in how Gintoki can plow through armies without tiring, apathetic to the serious injuries he sustains whilst cutting down his enemies. He told Kawakami Bansai, during the Shinsengumi Crisis, that the only reason he fought in the Joui War was to protect his friends and not his country or the samurai way.
The more comical stories depict Gintoki as a coward, attempting to leave behind many of his friends to save his own life. However, he is willing to risk his life for anyone and he is shown to be extremely caring towards his friends and has killed Naraku members, terrorists, and Amanto to protect them. He is extremely frightened of ghosts, but will usually deny their existence so that he doesn't look like a coward. His fear of the supernatural is shared by Hijikata and usually results in quite a few comic interactions between the two.
He has many childish personality traits despite his age, and has even called himself a "child in a man's body." One such trait is his insatiable love for sweets, which has placed him at risk of getting diabetes several times. His favorite food is chocolate parfait and he loves chugging down strawberry milk whenever he gets access to it. He also is repeatedly shown to have difficulty expressing his emotions and often disguises his true feelings under a cold outer layer. He loves alcohol, but his tolerance for sake is not high. At one point, his tendency to act like a complete idiot while being completely smashed.
Though several female characters have shown an interest in Gintoki, such as Shimura Tae, Sarutobi Ayame and Tsukuyo, it is shown that most of their love is unrequited. However, he does have a huge crush on the weather girl, Ketsuno Ana, and once stated he wished to marry her (possibly because of her smile). Despite or due to all of these traits Gintoki possesses an immense amount of charisma and has amassed a quite large group of friends. When it is needed, he is able to impart words of wisdom and can make those around him feel much more alive even with his inappropriate jokes and deadpan statements.
This ability has given him very loyal allies, friends, and even former enemies. As Hinowa pointed out, he was able to affect Tsukuyo (who is usually a dead-serious and cold-blooded woman) and even made friends with the Shogun, despite the situation always turning out less than ideal whenever the latter would be around.

Remember that time when they made that filler episode in gintama with gintoki and hijikata handcuffed just for ginhiji shippers and it was so good that if someone told me that sorachi personally wrote this and it was adapted from the manga I would believe them? That's how you do fanservice

It'll always be funny to me that when the Shinsengumi was leaving Edo, Hijikata told Gintoki that he can have all his alcohol and he'll be back by the time Gintoki's drunk it all. And then Gintoki immediately leaves not just Edo but the entire planet, negating the entire point of Hijikata leaving behind all that alcohol for him.

Adding some variety this time with a Sakata Gintoki x Hijikata Toushirou anthology fic collection. This one is actually the second book I did! I had a hard time deciding the anthology name since I was like ugh silver and iron sounds too pretentious- and then figured a title that was pretentious and then proceeded to make fun of it for being pretentious is a very Gintama thing to do, and ended up rather pleased with the title.
Since it was the second thing I typeset I ended up with a few issues in the final print (and binding... I didn't intend for a straight spine but forgot about rounding it, but a lot of people like to leave their spines straight anyways so it's fine) that I'm tempted to go back and fix and maybe redo the whole thing another time (we do not talk about the inverted page number positions. Is this why the icha icha series numbers are all centered instead of on the outside of the page? No absolutely not) but in the end I still enjoy it the way it is, so for now I'm at peace with it.
Originally I was actually going to add little designs above each title page of each story, but in the end I got to trigger-happy for the printing and bookbinding process and printed it before I drew the designs. I did in the end while bored draw the designs after, so maybe I will eventually redo the book. We'll see.
List of fics in the anthology:
Summer Heat (3k, G)
Hijikata gets ordered by Kondo to go on a vacation. For some reason, he runs into Gintoki there.
I told you once (and here's the twice) (3k, M)
“Ah, stern as always. You never change, do you, Hijikata-kun?”
“And you always do whatever you want to”.
“Right, I’m working on that”, and then Yorozuya lifts his hand and takes Hijikata’s cigarette from his mouth, placing it between his own teeth. Hijikata himself is too stunned to do anything other than just look at his mouth, lips curved over where his own had been just moments before, his body now kicked into high alert as if responding to an imminent threat.
An animal realizing they’re prey.
---
Two years is a long time yearning for someone.
Stop the rising tide, I need extra time (3.5k, E)
No one really comments on the change in their relationship, and Hijikata doesn’t know how to feel about the general air of lack of surprise around them.
---
Sequel to "i told you once (and here's the twice)". Hijikata is trying his best to make a place for himself in Gintoki's life. Gintoki loves him for it.
Common Misconceptions (7.6k, G)
“Yes, Hijikata-san, we were worried for you,” Sougo drawls, with a smirk on his lips, and then, like the little bastard he is, he asks, “Where were you?”
Hijikata thinks he knows exactly what conclusion those two idiots landed on after seeing him in the Yorozuya’s yukata.
(Or: 5 times people wrongly assume something about the relationship between Hijikata and the Yorozuya and the one time they turn out to be right after all)
Don't venture into the forest alone or you will end up befriending a lonely kitsune (7k, G)
"With his curiosity peaked, Toushirou slowly sat up and crawled over.
Fur?
It was white? No, darker than white. Silver?
Toushirou picked up the tuft of fur on the ground, wondering what animal it could have come from. He had been here so many times, but had never seen an animal with silver-white fur. Maybe a new animal moved into the forest and he had yet to see it?
From behind the bushes, a pair of curious red eyes watched the young boy."
-------
Kitsune! Gintoki x Human! Hijikata AU
7-year old Hijikata, shunned by his family, meets a young kitsune living alone in the forest.
Written for GinHijiGin Week 2020, for the prompt: Gintoki's Birthday.
And when it's time to remember, please don't forget your heart's greatest desire (13k, E)
After missing Ketsuno Ana's rare meet and greet session, Gintoki expected to head home and wallow in self pity while stuffing his face with strawberry shortcake and milk.
What he didn't expect, was to run into an unconscious man with beautiful black wings, and end up carrying him home.
----------
A Human Gintoki x Tengu Hijikata oneshot AU
Inspired by marrbl's art (included in fic with permission from artist)
Downloading Pornography Can Lead to Computer Viruses and Strained Relationships (12k, T)
Tama is sick, and Gengai enlists Hijikata’s help to fix her. Too bad Hijikata never watched the Tama Quest arc, otherwise he might have known that the Leukocyte King isn’t normally a huge flirt.
Boys Over Flowers (12k, E)
Gintoki always thought that both he and Hijikata were just really good bros. They were just two normal bros who played Super Smash and joked around after school at WacDonalds. So what if they cuddled a bit while watching scary movies? And what if they shared a bed during sleepovers and jacked each other off in the morning? Bros did that, right?
Okay, maybe Gintoki and Hijikata weren't just 'bros being bros' afterall.
The Demon's Bride (15k, M)
Hijikata bowed and introduced himself. “Hijikata Toushirou, Shiroyasha-dono’s bride and soon-to-be wife. Pleased to meet you.”
Gintoki spluttered on his drink while Takasugi’s laughter got louder.
===========
Shiroyasha/Ponikata AU
RVSP Even if You Aren't Sure You'll Make It, Just In Case; It's Better to Have More Chairs Than Less (16k, E)
Hijikata has a problem and needs Gintoki's help.

Honestly the reason I can't ship Hijikata and Gintoki is that it feels like long lost twins finding each other after being separated at birth and developing different personalities. It was then worsened back when Sket Dance was released since back then Shinohara sensei admitted the twins were based on Hijikata and Gintoki.
For those wondering why, it's fairly well known that Sorachi wanted to make a Shinsengumi manga with Hijikata as the MC and when he was told he couldn't keep the concept he repurposed his MC to fit his new story context. Then he got the opportunity to use the Shinsengumi and brought back his former MC. So they're essentially the same character with different environments. Hence the feelings of twins.
Mind you I get why ppl ship it, it just happens to be the reason I can't ship it.

For Hijikata’s Birthday, the first chapter of a 2 parter story featuring Hijikata and Ginhiji
Hijikata-san! Love is War
“Your kid hates me” grumbled Hijikata.
“Yes she does” said Gintoki lazily.
“Stop her” demanded Hijikata.
“She is her own person. It is not like I told her to hate your tax stealing, vomit loving, V shaped hair having self” said Gintoki.
“It sounds like you told her that.”
“No I didn’t… just give her time okay. She’ll come around eventually” said Gintoki getting up. He liked having dinner with Hijikata. Good company, plus he usually paid. But he only could take a small amount of watching him slurp on mayonaise before he started getting the urge to vomit.
“Oii… at least give me a tip, how do I make the brat like me?” asked Hijikata desperately. Gintoki sighed. Leave it to the dumbass to worry about the dumbest things. Cause he was dumb.
“Why is it so important to you?”
“It is cause-“ Hijikata hesitated. Gintoki would think his embarassment was cute, if he wasn’t still slurping on that god damn mayo during the conversation. “It is cause, she is important to you… and I want to get along with her. Plus I am pretty certain everytime I come over she is planning my murder.”
“Kagura wouldn’t do that…” said Gintoki confidently. “She is not the type to plan things. If she felt like killing you, she would just do it.”
“Yorozuya, you are not helping.”
“I am not trying to” said Gintoki, always the embodiment of a sentient shit eating grin. “Just go hang out with her. Buy her some stuff. She likes sukonbu, and money, and food. Get any food in her system and she’ll be calling you her new mom in no time.”
“Oi, shut up. I am the dad in this duo if anything” said Hijikata angrily.
“Keep telling yourself that honey” said Gintoki as he waved good bye. He knew the hack police well enough to know that it would work out somehow.
“Buy her food huh?” thought Hijikata.
XxXxXxXxX
“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?” screaming Gintoki.
“What? You told me to get her food?”
“I SAID FOOD… WHAT THE HELL IS THIS” screamed Gintoki, pointing at the mountain of mayonnaise in the middle of his office.
“She’ll love it.” Said hijikata sounding hopeful.
“You are a moron” said Gintoki frustrated. “You are a god damn moron… I cant believe how much of a moron you are. How much did all of this cost?”
“Not much…” said Hijikata. Gintoki looked at him with suspicion. “I might have asked Kondo san to give me next months salary early… and the one after that too.”
“I am divorcing you” said Gintoki.
“We are not even married yet.”
“Then lets get married so I can divorce your dumb ass.”
“So you are saying she won’t like me generous present?” asked Hijikata, confused. “Are you sure you are not just saying that so that you can keep them for yourself?”
XxXxXxX
“God damn Yorozuya” grumbled Hijikata as he carried the mountain of mayo to the headquarters, barely keeping his balance. His tasteless ass just didn’t appreciate the beauty of the mayonnaise. Metaphorically tasteless ass of course, as in he didn’t have taste. Otherwise Hijikata for one, thought Yorozuya’s ass was very tasty… speaking of ass, his hurt after the kick he received out of the window. Probably why he was thinking all that crazy stuff too, cause he fell and hit his head. God damn domestic abuse now too… he should call the police and get Yorozuya arrested. But his head was wobbly, he had trouble remembering the number of the police.
“Hijikata san… oii Hijikata san do you hear me?” said an annoying monotone voice. Sadly, no amount of head trauma was enough to make him forget that guy.
“Oi Sougo, didn’t I tell you to not bother me when I am thinking of Yorozuya’s ass- I mean his ass old house.” Nailed it Toshi, he thought, patting himself on the back.
“Riiiight” said Sougo. “So you want help, carrying these things?”
“Oh? You would? Thanks Sougo, I owe you one” said Hijikata. Head trauma made it hard to notice the deal you make with the devil sometimes.
“Don’t mention it” said Sougo, picking the boxes up with ease. He carefully carried them a few feet, as Hijikata watched his best friend smiling.
…and promptly threw all of it in the river.
“OIII BASTARD, WHAT ARE YOU DOING” said Hijikata, as he casually walked away.
“Protecting the environment” said Sougo lazily as he was walking away. Hijikata had no time to waste on him however, as he had to jump after his precious. If he was unlucky, the broken boxes he saw meant his treasure was lost forever. With a little luck, the mayo would turn the entire river into a beautiful, sea of mayonnaise, and would mean he would have enough mayo to last him for an eternity. Or at least a month.
XxXxXxXxXxX
He wasn’t lucky. Down two salaries, completely wet, with an abusive boyfriend. Furthermore, that abusive boyfriend’s child/little sister/unpaid underage labor force hated him still. He had to fix it. Now more determined than ever, he decided to become the china girls best friend. And he would start by learning her name… somehow.
XxXxXxXxXxX
"Whatever" said the girl, completely ignoring his incredible effort and willpower with the wave of her hand. "You want to do something for us?"
“Why are you here?” demanded the little orange thing in the room. “Gin chan isn’t home.”
“I just wanted to talk to you a bit, China” said Hijikata through gritted teeth. He was doing his best to sound polite, but the something about her expression gave him the impression that she didn’t want him here, and that she wanted him to go away.
“I don’t want you here. Go away” said the girl version of Sougo.
“Don’t be like that Kagura chan, Hijikata san probably just came to visit” came the soothing voice of the glasses inside. ‘Kagura! Yes, that was her name’ thought Hijikata triumphantly. He made note of getting that boy something nice later. Maybe a glasses wipe. Or mayon-
“Come in then, no need to advertise the neighbors that we are associating ourselves with you” said -Kag- Kay? Karu?” the China girl interrupting his thoughts rudely. He still smiled as much as he could and followed the girl inside.
The girl pointed at the seat in front of the table for him to sit. Then she herself went to the other side and sat on the boss chair, putting her legs on the table, glaring at him all the way through. An action that would have cost anyone in Shinsengumi at least 27 seppukus. Hijikata made a mental note to tell Yorozuya to discipline his children/coworker/slaves a bit better, but then again, the words discipline and Yorozuya rarely made sense together. Except in bed. There, he tended to be pretty good at disciplining him with-
“So what is your intention with our boy” said the orange monster, again interrupting his thoughts.
“What do you mean China?” asked Hijikata, doing his best to be polite. The bundle of sadism and torture sighed, shaking her had.
“I am going be honest here Toshi, do you truly believe you are good enough for our star boy?”
Hijikata stared, mouth open. This was not the direction he expected the conversation to go.
“Wh- wha-“ he desperately looked at the glasses in the room for help. The boy was writing something on a notepad with a disapproving look.
“Kagura chan is right. He may be an idiot, but Gin san is still a main character. He also saved the world countless times. You are a mediocre policeman with a mediocre income and mediocre retorts as a mediocre straight man. What makes you think you are good enough for him?” asked the teenage boy.
“You bastards, who gave you brats the right to judge me” Hijikata thought angrily.
“Oh come on dear, I think we both have proof how much he failed as a straight man” said the small nightmare girl, with an exaggerated old woman voice, followed by an irritating laugh by both of them.
“That is homophobic you know. You are teaching our audience wrong things” said Hijikata, through gritted teeth, still with a forced smile on his face.
“Oh we are fine with our boy being into men. We respect his choices. We only judge his terrible taste” retorted the 14 year old war criminal immediately, followed by another round of obnoxious laughing by the 2 beasts.
“Who is neglecting his duties as the straight man now you bastard.”
Hijikata’s hand went to his sword reflexively. But he stopped himself. It would be counterproductive to attack Yorozuya’s children thingies when he came here to make peace. Plus there was a very real chance that the alien brat could kick his ass, which would not look good for him.
“Anyway” said Hijikata, relying on the universal way to change the topic when you have no way to answer. “I thought we could hang out a bit. Spend some time together you know? While Yorozuya is gone."
“Yorozuya is and always will be around” said Kaguya (oh that was her name), in a low, threatening voice. Hijikata swallowed another swear.
“When I said Yorozuya, I meant G-Gintoki”    answered Hijikata, trying to ignore the bad taste of the unfamiliar word.
"Yes" said Hijikata confidently.
"You really want to do something for us" asked Kagu- something, leaning closer.
"Y-yes" said Hijikata less confidently. The little demon smiled. Hijikata gulped.
XxXxXxXxX
20 minutes later, the demon vice chief, Hijikata Toshirou, was carrying an absurd amount of Sukonbu, barely able to keep his balance. Next to him, the human personification of a miniature devil was walking, hands empty except, ordering him not to drop anything.
He was so glad he didn't have kids, and didn't plan to have any. Hopefully, he could convince Yorozuya that kids are stupid and evil and should be gotten rid of as soon as possible, eventually as well. Consoling himself with these thoughts, Hijikata continued his new job as the slave of the two kids, and something told him this day was going to be a full one when it comes to bullshit.
Unlike his wallet.

gintama runs on sazae-san time. sure, buddy
#leologisms#gintama#gintameta#this is a joke by the way. gintama does in fact run on sazae-san time (except for when it doesnt)#well this post is really about how gintama works as a narrative (as observed by shinpachi or as observed by us humans) and how gintoki#as the one telling the story is able to mould the narrative structure to fit his needs#gintama runs on sazae-san time for the vast majority of the story which. makes sense. as a series which is much better approached as a#particularly emotionally volatile slice of life. but it of course serves further purpose in the light of gintamas themes and gintokis#personal growth (nearly nonexistent). cant quite recall if ive ever said this before but i like to maintain that gintama is less about#character growth and more about the growth/flux of relationships between characters. not to say that characters in gintama dont grow. they#definitely do. most of them do. but in line with shinpachis (and by extension our) view of gintoki and his back. gintoki barely seems to#grow at all. hes stable. hes obstinate. hes home. hes left behind. hes the great big open sky. hes incorporeal.#(and sometimes he goes backwards.)#gintama as a story told by gintoki (observed and narrated by shinpachi. tama. etc.) is ultimately shaped by him as a protagonist#the sazae san format almost seems like an excuse for him to remain stagnant. he doesnt move and he doesnt change because neither does time#and when the sazae san format is finally broken and time ticks forward he regresses. no longer yorozuya gin-chan. just a nameless ghost.#and hes dragged back to edo (back to the present. back to reality) by hijikata#(oni masked human) and in the very end he moves forwards with his kids. great.#but he can no longer carry on under the pretence of sazae san time. the veil is lifted. the mask is broken#so its two years later and his kids are older. they wear the same clothes but theyre older. and gintoki?#is changed. but is he older? does he move forward with the ticking of the clock or does he remain there? steadfast? unchanging?#i always have a vision of gintoki left behind in his own narrative. when his kids have flown the nest and hes seen his promise through to#the end... will he have moved forward?#by the way. i dont know if i really believe what im saying here. whatever

Hello! I love how your persecpetive on Gintama lore and how you interpret the characters in a realistic light. Do you have any personal theories on Gintoki's childhood before Shoyou? I know there is not any infomation on it, but I would love your input on it!
Oh, sure, I’ve talked about this before and I’ve said how Gintoki’s life before Shouyou isn’t unimportant, but it is inconsequential to the story. He tells Hijikata he doesn’t know who is mother is and Shouyou finds him sitting on a corpse eating rice. From this we can pretty much gather that he was an orphan for as long as he can remember and the skills he picked up he only did so in order to survive. You can fill in those gaps any way you want to, but it’s pretty safe to assume that Gintoki was alone until Shouyou came along and without Otose, he likely would have died in that graveyard.

"I would say yes but Nanami gets angry with me all the time. Don't know why though. Who wouldn't want to be with the strongest sorcerer of all time?".
Although in hindsight, Satoru really didn't see himself settling down with anyone anytime soon. But at least Kento knew about Satoru's somewhat rotten and grating personality. However, in being in this profession, who knew when the people he had a somewhat good relationship with would ultimately kick the bucket. Not him, though. Never.

"Sure, pair me up with the mayo freak. Then I can reenact the 'me, my boyfriend and his giant bottle of mayonnaise' meme. I rather give up my sugar intake before I even consider myself with that Shinsengumi idiot".
While Gintoki did make that joke about them selling well made Doujinshi of the two of them together in his show, he's not really into people with weird obsession with condiments. And he already has to deal with smelling cigarette smoke from his landlady. To Gintoki, that's a deal breaker when it comes to anyone. Can't have it so he accidently thinks of someone ugly every time the vice commander lights one. Nope.
"I've told you many time, I only like hot people just like that weather lady on the tv". Gintoki, that doesn't count.
