friday fic f*ckery (wip wednesday 2 days late)
blurb | she returns! with updates! later than promised! new cv/sm snippet, after ..... six months :,) well, work kicked my ass, ch236 certainly didn't do any of us any favors, and then I f*cked off to latam for a month of vacation. but I'm back!!! rested, tan (for ca the 2nd time in my life) and freshly (re)inspired. so we can have some cv/sm ch2 snippet, as a treat ;a;
premise | we're entering culling game territory. that's all imma say for now. well ok, not much happens here, I mostly just wanted to show signs of life lol
Satoru is falling.
He’s falling, rapidly dropping from at least half a kilometer skywards. Cursing the inherent capricious fickleness of Prison Realm—Prison Realm, Buddha, Hell incarnate, whom- slash whatever has stuck him in this never ending loop—he rights himself midair, fumbling his graceless way through multi-seals of Red and Blue until he’s maneuvered himself from horizontal to upright. He cushions a dense amount of amplification/reversal beneath the soles of his feet, puffs an audible breath, and looks down.
Beneath his feet stretches a silver-black, opaque barrier. By cursory glance he estimates its radius to at least a handful miles. The skies above are overcast, though bright; the light spearing through the banks of cloud bounces off the barrier, giving its matte gray hull a sheen which flickers and wobbles in stretches of paces and tracts.
The barrier is an obvious giveaway: this is a Culling Game colony. Satoru’s well enough familiar; remembers a stretch of eight sleepless hours in which he’d devoured dossier after dossier of news clippings, incident reports, stat compendiums and autopsies, two weeks into the Culling Games, and a scant forty eight hours post-unsealing. He remembers boring naked eyes into a painstakingly noted, three-dimensional map-cum-graph of the Culling Game territory; affected regions: Tohoku, Kanto, Chūbu, Kansai, Chugoku and Kyushu; confirmed colonies: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamamashi, Aichi, Shiga, Kyoto, Hyogo, Osaka, Hiroshima and Kagoshima.
Satoru has taken in the broad sweeps of Tokyo’s metropolis from far above one too many times to mistake wherever he is for anywhere closeby. What he chances: a large city along the coast; given his current proximity to an Eastbound shoreline, as well as a considerable expanse of forested areas and roiling, yellow fields eating into the scenery, he’s going to assume he’s either a few hundred kilometers North or South of Tokyo. Maybe Miyagi. Or Chūbu.
The barrier is too dense and too cleverly constructed to allow Satoru to peek through and glean more than the most base information: cityscape and skyline are barely visible, the shapes and contours which oscillate beneath the ripples of the sky-in-the-barrier appear like a mirage out of focus. There is vague movement far below, tiny prickles of dots which move every which way. Every few intervalled seconds reveal noiseless, sepia-tinted flashes. Explosions.
Well. There’s only one way in which he can proceed, unless he’d planned on hightailing it out of there. Which he hadn’t. Satoru, at this point past the point of expecting the worst—and somehow, cyclically, living (dying, really) through it—makes his way downwards warily.
He doesn’t know what to expect, in truth; twenty nine years, an indeterminate number of days, weeks or years inside Prison Realm, plus an unknown bout of days cycling through iterations of timelines which may or may not have actually occurred—he’s been exposed to shoddy veils cracking around the density of his own cursed energy; written tests covering the cursed fundamentals of purification barriers; barrier techniques specifically tailored to keep him excluded from what’s outside, safely contained within.
He doesn’t know what to expect here.
Satoru touches down on the barrier.
“Yo! I’m Kogane!”
If he weren’t blasé about the most outlandish of jujutsu techniques being shoved in his face by now, Satoru wonders if he wouldn’t have reared back into guard. He squints at the cursed spirit which has materialised in his face out of thin air. He’s read himself to the basics of this, but it’s his first time seeing it.
He’s about to reply ad hoc when it continues, voice tinny and clearly electronically scrambled. “The death matches known as the Culling Game are underway inside of this barrier!! Once you step in, you’re a player too!!”
“I—”
“Knowing that, will you go inside anyway!?”
“That’s morbid,” huffs Satoru.
The cursed spirit, Kogane—its structural composition isn’t all curse, atom constellations mashed down somewhere halfway between cursed spirit and inanimate object—undulates and flicks its tail. It doesn’t go on, seemingly content to wait for his reply. It’ll have to be in the affirmative or negative, Satoru guesses. A game interface, then. Curse based, but all in all a tool.
“Sure, I’ll tap in.” What’s adding some more death, decay and public property destruction to his already considerable tally?
Kogane’s tail whips twice, ceasing when it’s a perfunctory line, its arrow-like tip pointing straight into the glassy dome beneath. Beware, ye who enter—but here’s a map, lest you get lost en route to the deathmatch arenas. “Tch, sick bastards,” he mutters.
When it next speaks, its delivery is robotic, flat: “Gojō Satoru has joined the Culling Game. Would you like to review the rules?”
Satoru has already reviewed the rules. Most cold, factual data obtained and recorded on the Culling Game had been cursory at best—and guess work and estimates at worst—Ijichi plus Nitta times two had managed to patchwork sorcerer’s statements, CCTV and aerial scans, and classified government reports into a general debrief: the (probable) how’s, when’s and why’s of the game.
“I’m  good,” he says.
Kogane tuts. Mechanical and rote though it may be, it sounds chiding. Then it disappears, flickering twice, its shape disrupted by something static-adjacent until it bleeds out of sight and mind.
“Huh.” Satoru waits on the spot for a few seconds—parses out a few seconds, in case there’s more incoming.
Nothing else happens. He rights himself, and sinks a foot through the barrier.

Hi!!! Some months ago I said I had a few more tangentially related RGG vacation pictures I hadn't sent in bc you had not started Ishin yet :D
Kagoshima (formerly Satsuma) was second stop directly after we had arrived in Japan/Hiroshima (can highly recommend visiting but it is a bit far from the usual hotspots such as Tokyo or Kyoto).
The pictures are from the Museum of Meiji Restauration in Kagoshima. It's small but I enjoyed it nevertheless, a lot of the signs were in Japanese but they give u an audio guide that has an English language option 🙏🏼 From what I've gathered, Saigo Takamori is a local historical legend, and with him Tsun 🥺
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The city bus also takes you around the more historic spots and gives a little audio snippet, so you pass places like Saigo Takamori's statue and Saigo's Cave - we didn't exit there bc we were headed straight for Sengan-en, but it's super neat if you're interested in the local history :D
I stumbled over a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma and Oryo in Tenmonkan (Kagoshima's shopping district). Also took a pic of the info plaque so here u go! Sorry for the weird angle 😅 got jumpscared by a guy who was sitting in some chair behind the plaque covered head to toe in plastic wrap, he scared the living daylights out of me. I hope he's okay 😅🙈
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH THATS SO COOL! AND TSUN 🥺 Thank you for sharing!!

Tumblr media
This is the one of two book covers for the sequel of my Danganronpa X Male!Reader story, Danganronpa: The Ultimate Student…
Danganronpa 2: The Curse of Jabberwock Island.
Plot: After the events at Hope's Peak Academy and the death of Junko Hiroshima thanks to Y/n aka the Ultimate Student and the Warriors of Hope, Y/n decided to take a well-deserved vacation at a relaxing vacation island spot known as Jabberwock Island.
However as soon as he arrived on the island with a young man named Hajime Hinata also known as the Ultimate Hope, they both soon encounter a sentient bunny plush doll named Monomi, who is being attacked by none other than…Monokuma that is piloting a giant robot that took out Monomi.
Y/n wasn't surprised to see Monokuma once again as the build-a-bear reject decided to send him and Hajime to a another killing game with 15 new students as they're all trapped on a remote island with no chance for escape unless they kill each other to get off the island.
Monokuma still didn't forget about his time with Y/n while he was in Hope's Peak Academy with the original students and delivered the ultimate payback on Junko that led to her demise. So, he comes up with a master plan to make Y/n the perfect replacement for Junko as his protege/partner in crime and no one will stop him from getting his paws on Y/n to fill him body, mind and soul with despair.
Luckily, Y/n is not alone to deal with Monokuma and his sick, twisted games as Hajime and the other students will do whatever they can to help out Y/n with his mission to escape the island alive with the remaining students that survived most of the carnage on the island.

also i don't know anything about the world as a disclaimer but oppenheimer (the movie) doesn't evenly gloss over the damage the atomic bomb did to japan and to new mexico
the massacre of hiroshima and nagasaki in the movie is always in the corner. it is supposed to be something the audience is always thinking of that the characters are not always thinking of. oppenheimer has to remind people multiple times that they didn't just bomb hiroshima, they also bombed nagasaki. we are supposed to feel disgusted at the kyoto joke - sparing a city of civilians over other cities of civilians just because one american had a vacation there once. we see people reacting to the slideshow of japanese victims of the atomic bomb even though we never see who they are. the mass killing is supposed to be the specter just out of frame. whether us not being shown any of the actual victims is a good thing or a bad thing is your decision obviously, and you can criticize the movie for it, but i am pretty sure that is how nolan meant it to be.
whereas the audience never learns that the trinity test has any effect on new mexico at all. los alamos is emphasized as this vast lonely place away from the rest of humanity. we never see any effects on new mexico's residents, and we never hear about any effects, and that's not a specific storytelling choice of the film, that's a blatant omission that should have been corrected.

Four Books That Helped Me Understand Japan
Tumblr media
When I moved to Japan three and a half years ago, I hardly knew the language, much less anything about Japanese society. Anything I was familiar with came from anime, manga, and my one vacation here in 2017. Basically, I only knew the good, fun parts of Japan.
After moving here and the novelty of "I'm living in Japan" wore off, I craved a connection with my new country on a deeper level. I wanted to understand how Japanese people felt about Japan.
But my Japanese wasn't (and still isn't) good enough to talk about things like gender, economics, war, or generation gaps, and my Japanese friends struggle to articulate their thoughts and feelings on these topics in English.
So, I turned to translated Japanese books to understand Japan better, and to find some sort of relation between Japan and my experiences living in the US.
Here are four books that helped me begin to find some common ground with Japan.
Tumblr media
Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro
Set about ten years after World War II, the book is narrated by an aging ukiyo-e painter, who reflects on his life and art while struggling to accept the present backlash from the younger generation for his role as a pro-war propaganda artist.
What resonated with me about Artist of the Floating World was the clash between the elderly narrator and his children's generation.
The generational clash is not unlike the Boomer/Gen Z clash we're dealing with in the US. In Japan, there's a drastic shift in how Millennials and Gen Z approach the social norms set by Boomers, creating societal tension not unlike what we're dealing with.
While Artist of the Floating World isn't a direct commentary on the present, the themes are reminiscent of current generation gaps and clashes and helped me form parallels between contemporary strife in the US and Japan.
Tumblr media
Breasts and Eggs by Meiko Kawakami
A contemporary story that follows the narrator, her sister, and her niece as they navigate sex, pregnancy, single parenthood, and Japanese beauty standards.
I think this was the first female Japanese author I had read at the time. I had a base understanding of Japan's gender dynamics that I became more familiar with after moving here.
However, Breasts and Eggs gave me an intimate into the hearts and minds of Japanese women, and how they struggle between fulfilling the expectations of their gender and living the life they want.
This book really gave me a strong sense of solidarity with Japanese women. With the slew of anti-abortion legislation passing in the US this past year and the constant threat of losing our body autonomy, I resonated with the feeling of suffocation under the patriarchial thumb.
Tumblr media
Trinity, Trinity, Trinity by Erika Kobayashi
Originally published in October 2019, the story is set in the near future during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Since the 2011 Fukushima Nuclear disaster, the elderly have been plagued with memories that aren't their own, and are inexplicably drawn to places of radioactivity.
The story not only encapsulates the national anxiety toward the ever-increasing threats of nuclear warfare in Asia but also illustrates generational nuclear trauma, something I never had to think about before actually living in Asia.
I live close to Hiroshima. My favorite thing to do on a nice day is take the train into the city, grab some Starbucks, wander toward Peace Memorial Park, and read across the river from the Atomic Bomb Dome.
I'm faced with the relics of nuclear destruction regularly, something I never had to face in the US. I never had to think about nuclear attacks or try to understand the generational impact of such events.
Of course, no amount of reading could make me understand just how deep the terror goes, but Trinity Trinity Trinity gave me some understanding of how nuclear warfare is ever-present in the back of Japanese minds.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Ueno Station by Miri Yu
The story is told by the spirit of a homeless man who lived in Ueno Park's homeless village. He recounts the hardships of his life, which coincidentally align with events in the lives of the Imperial Family.
Of all the Japanese novels I read, Tokyo Ueno Station gave me the most insight into Japan's current socioeconomic climate, especially regarding the homeless.
The juxtaposition of the narrator's life and the Imperial Family's is a great illustration of the increasing wealth gaps in Japan, and how the homeless are considered invisible or a burden.
The Ueno Park homeless village reminded me of the homeless in Peace Memorial Park, with their cardboard shelters beneath the bridges, or sleeping on the stone benches by the river, while tourists with shining Gucci belts and Yves Saint Laurant bags pass by them without so much as a sideways glance.
It made me wonder, "Are they asked to find somewhere else to go whenever someone important comes to Peace Park? Are they only acknowledged when they're seen as a stain that needs to be removed before they're seen by someone with more money and status?"
Honestly, if I hadn't moved here, I don't know if I would've explored Japanese literature outside of the random Haruki Murakami books my friends lent to me. Moving here made me crave a sense of belonging, which is something books always gave me.
Whatever brought me here, though, I'm glad I started reading Japanese literature. It makes me feel a little less alone, being a foreigner in Japan.

Transformers Animated prompt idea: Earth raised bots AU: More Earth Bots profiles

Hi there! I went with some friends a few years ago to Japan and I loved it! We stayed half the time in Tokyo exploring, and the other half we bought a week long pass on the bullet train and spent a night or two in a bunch of different places — Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka, which I’d recommend, and Nagoya and Kanazawa, which I wouldn’t necessarily. It was a really great mix of seeing the whole country and exploring one place in depth imo, but whether or not you want to do that depends on your vacation preferences. The bullet train experience through the countryside alone was spectacular.
There’s a lot of classic things to do I’d recommend, like seeing the shrine on Miyajima at sunset or taking a bus out to Mt Fuji. The deer park at Nara was super cool also. Definitely check out a big arcade in Tokyo, and you have to go to a Don Quixote at least once. You absolutely cannot go wrong with food, but one dish in particular I enjoyed that I couldn’t get anywhere else was okonomiyaki.
For logistics stuff, I’d 100% recommend only bringing a smaller suitcase + backpack per person, because you’ll have to take it on all the trains and buses with you and it can be a hassle to have a full sized one. AirBnB’s were pretty decent as well if you go that route. We had a friend who spoke japanese who escorted us sometimes, but we were fine just pointing and smiling without knowing the language the rest of the time. Public transportation was VERY easy to understand and use with google maps. Get a Pasmo card for the trains for sure!
Hopefully that wasn’t too much information haha. It’s easily my favorite place I’ve ever been so I love giving people recommendations. I hope you guys enjoy your honeymoon! I wish you many years of happiness <33
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED. This is so insanely helpful!!!!!! Thank you so much I will hold onto all this when we go. I love you, I cannot thank u enough, we have no idea what we're doing haha. Now I'm excited!!!!!!

Positive COVID-19 Tests Force Changes to NOAH (Fujita), NJPW (Fujinami + Ospreay) Supercards; NJPW Golden Fight Series Nights 8 + 9 - 4/27 & 4/28/2022; Accusations Against Chris Dickinson; Full Dead Or Alive 2022 Card; ZERO1 Otani Benefit Show Announced
I know I said I was gonna just do a post tomorrow initially, but too much has happened since Tuesday that it behooves me to do so.
COVID-19 is still a thing, especially in Japan. It’s now altered two of the Golden Week supercards.
The first announcement came yesterday from Pro Wrestling NOAH, where it was revealed a positive PCR test meant that Kazuyuki Fujita would not be able to defend the GHC Heavyweight title against Go Shiozaki on Saturday at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan. The title has been vacated, and Go Shiozaki will now face a TBD opponent. Kaito Kiyomiya put himself forward as Shiozaki’s opponent . Kiyomiya is already booked to team with Yoshiki Inamura against Naomichi Marufuji & a mystery opponent. We will see what becomes of this. The altered match(es) have not yet been announced.
There was a lot of snark on Twitter (and I contributed to some of it), because while I don’t think the COVID-19 diagnosis is anything but genuine, this is a very Kazuyuki Fujita thing to do, in order to get out of doing a job he doesn’t want to. Then again, I am not shy about my contempt for Fujita, and it may be coloring my reaction. That said, hope he recovers without too much difficulty.
This morning, NJPW announced that both Tatsumi Fujinami and Will Ospreay also both tested positive, and therefore would miss Wrestling Dontaku 2022 on Sunday from the Fukuoka Pay Pay Dome. Ospreay was supposed to be in the IWGP US Heavyweight title decision match against Hiroshi Tanahashi; that match is now Tanahashi v. Tomohiro Ishii. As for Fujinami, he will now be replaced by a mystery wrestler in the 6-man tag match with Shingo Takagi & BUSHI (himself a replacement for Hiromu Takahashi, who is now wrestling YOH in a singles match) against Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr. & TAKA Michinoku. I’m a little concerned for Fujinami – the man is 68 years old, hardly a spring chicken. Hoping he (and Ospreay) also recover soon.
Since we’re here, let’s wrap up the Golden Fight Series tour, shall we?

YOH vowed to finish Hiromu on Sunday.
Last night on Twitter, a series of posts from wrestler Christina von Eerie went out citing abuse, gaslighting, etc., from a former partner of hers, recent NJPW signing Chris Dickinson. Dickinson has denied any such abuse took place. All the tweets are out there. You decide what to do with the information. For myself, I’m pretty disappointed to hear of all this. I also know that NJPW typically does absolutely nothing regarding their non-Japanese talents being accused of anything (indeed, they rarely do for their Japanese talents), so I am not holding my breath for any repercussions to come from NJPW or NJoA. It’s a shitty situation, and one that continues to be all-too frequent in wrestling. Change needs to come.
The tour is over, and the next event is Sunday’s big Wrestling Dontaku 2022 from Fukuoka. The event will be shown live on NJPWWorld, and I think FITE TV as well if you want. Below is the revised card.

Dragon Gate
The full card for Dead Or Alive 2022 has been announced. The biggest noticeable thing is there is no Dead Or Alive Cage Match this year. Which is OK. We do not need to have The Dead Or Alive Cage Match every year just for the sake of having The Dead Or Alive Cage Match. We already have one man wrestling twice in two title matches, and a stipulation where someone has to leave a unit if they lose. It’s OK.
One note – Hip Hop Kikuta has now announced he is no longer Hip Hop Kikuta, but is going back to his given name, Madoka Kikuta. This really feels like they are over-egging Kikuta’s return where he will TOTALLY NOT BE JOINING Z-BRATS to where it’s becoming obvious HE IS TOTALLY JOINING Z-BRATS. They are not being subtle here.
Dead Or Alive 2022 - 5/5/2022, Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium (DG Network)
Open The Twin Gate Championship: Dragon Dia & Yuki Yoshioka [D’Courage] © v. Shun Skywalker & Diamante [Z-Brats]
4-Way Match: Shachihoko Boy v. Punch Tominaga v. Mondai Ryu v. Yosuke Santa Maria
Masaaki Mochizuki, Don Fujii, Yasushi Kanda & Shuji Kondo v. Strong Machine J, La Estrella, Ishin Iihashi & Takuma Fujiwara
Madoka Kikuta & Jacky “Funky” Kamei [Natural Vibes] v. BxB Hulk & HYO [Z-Brats]
Genki Horiguchi, Big Boss Shimizu & Jason Lee [Natural Vibes] v. Ben-K, Keisuke Okuda & Kagetora [HIGH-END]
Ryukyu Dragon Pro Wrestling Twin Ryuo Championship: Kzy & U-T [Natural Vibes] © v. YAMATO & Dragon Kid [HIGH-END]
Open The Brave Gate Championship: Dragon Dia [D’Courage] © v. SB KENTo [Z-Brats]
Open The Triangle Gate Championship: Kota Minoura, Naruki Doi & Kaito Ishida [Gold Class] © v. Eita, NOSAWA Rongai & Kotaro Suzuki [Perros del Mal de Japon]
Open The Dream Gate Championship: KAI [Z-Brats] © v. Susumu Yokosuka [Natural Vibes] - If Susumu loses, he must leave Natural Vibes and revert his name to Susumu Mochizuki
Other News
Pro Wrestling ZERO1 will be holding a benefit show for Shinjiro Otani on 6/4/2022 from Tokyo Ota Ward Gymnasium. So far, support and participation has been pledged from NJPW (specifically Yuji Nagata, Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma, the latter of whom has had similar issues to what Otani has suffered), NOAH, BJW, 2AW, FREEDOMS, Ganbare!, OZ Academy, Diana and Tatsumi Fujinami. More details as they come.
In other tribute show news, another match has been announced for the Jumbo Tsuruta Memorial show on 5/31/2022 at Korakuen Hall. Shingo Takagi will team with a mystery partner, against the Aoyagi brothers, Yuma & Atsuki, from All Japan. Shingo has said his mystery partner may not be a member of Los Ingobernables, or indeed any other wrestler from NJPW.
More Fortune Dream 7 matches have been announced as well, as #STRONGHEARTS will take on AJPW in two matches. First, Takao Omori will face off against Issei Onitsuka, whilst CIMA & T-Hawk will take on the TOTAL ECLIPSE tandem of Jake Lee & Hokuto Omori. That’s on 6/15/2022 from Korakuen Hall as well.
In some final housekeeping news, if you follow my @StrongStylStory Twitter account, it will be changing its name to either @gdwessel (my current personal one, which I am retiring and merging into this one), or @GeoffreyWessel or @GeoffreyDWessel as a temporary measure if there is such a thing as Twitter time limits or something. We’ll see. Just a word of warning, this will be happening Sunday, probably AFTER I do that day’s post.
That’s it for today. See you tomorrow for the start of the Golden Week megacards.

March 1-3 : Yokosuka Japan
We spent our Leap Day in the air, landing in Tokyo on the afternoon of March 1.
Nathan's sister Crystal and her husband Dmitry have been living in Yokosuka for several years, and they were our expert tour guides for 2 perfect days in the area. We took the train straight down from the airport to meet them for a dinner.
Tumblr media
As a Navy town, Yokosuka has a lot of English being spoken and a high proportion of people recognize Dmitry, including staff at the establishments where we tried delicious grilled meat & veggie skewers followed by chuhais - all I could handle before I was falling asleep on my feet.
-
Tumblr media
The next morning we met up for a true breakfast of champions - Japanese strawberries, in the peak of their season and fresh off the vine! You pay a set price to pick all you can eat for half an hour, and you better believe I got full value out of that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We took the train to Komatsugaike Park, a popular Sakura (cherry blossom viewing) spot. In the first week of March, these trees were past their peak bloom but still very beautiful, and fun to be a part of this local seasonal event. There were food vendors where we got some small bites to balance out all that fruit.
Tumblr media
I had seen a glimpse of the beach from the train, and noticed the sea was full with windsurfers. I wanted to get a look at that, so we walked down to the Miura beach. It was way to frigid to consider touching that water even in a drysuit, but a good wind for the sport, just like home!
Tumblr media
After that we were pretty well frozen and ready for a nice hot lunch - ramen of course!
Tumblr media
We got back on a train out to Kotoku-in, where we got to see (and go inside) the giant Buddha.
Tumblr media
We walked from there to an incredible hillside temple complex, Hase-dera. It had some very different styles of Buddhas, a zen garden, a cave shrine, some incredible views, some distinctive koi and better example of peak cherry blossom beauty. This place is definitely worth the trip down from Tokyo to see!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a pretty touristy area too, so as the temples closed down, so did every restaurant and shop. We walked through the pedestrian street to one more temple, where we happened upon a very traditional wedding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a nice full day topped off with another good dinner and a bit better night’s sleep. Nothing beats jet lag like forcing yourself out into the sunlight from dawn til dark! Feeling very fortunate to have these couple days of weekend for a mini vacation before trying to start a work week.
-
The next morning C&D picked us up in their car for a trip out into more natural beauty - Jogashima Island. Turned out we couldn’t drive all the way as a marathon had closed down the streets, so we just parked on the mainland and walked over the bridge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We explored beaches and tide pools, watched the giant seahawks swoop and saw another, less traditional, wedding couple’s photoshoot. it was a beautiful and relatively warm day - Mount Fuji even made a rare appearance from the beach!
Tumblr media
This island seems to be all about tuna, and we got to try 5 or 6 different cuts and preparations at a seafood restaurant, as well as back at the large fish market where we parked and even alongside craft beers at a new brewery.
Next stop, Kurihama Flower Park. In the right seasons it would feature colorful fields but even after dark, you can enjoy this highlight: Godzilla!

Tumblr media Tumblr media
A second full day of walking and we had worked up an appetite for hibachi, lots more delicious grilled meats and veggies! Served by a robot, of course.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-
Today is March 4, and it was back to work, with breaks for a pastry and coffee breakfast, and to get up to Tokyo to catch the bullet train. Per tradition, we had bento boxes for the trip. Next stop, Hiroshima!
Tumblr media
I promise I won’t take a picture of EVERY meal. It has been amazing spending these first couple of days in vacation mode but I’m looking forward to getting on schedule and cooking our own meals again. We will start that at our first ever Home Exchange in Hiroshima!
Keep up with our calendar here

A Glowing Report on Maxey Flats
On your next family vacation, why not take the kids to Maxey Flats, Kentucky's catastrophic nuclear dump site? While not as famous as, say, Three Mile Island or Chernobyl, this fifty-five-acre tract of land near Hillsboro contains 4.7 million cubic feet of radioactive waste. It's sure to be great gun for any family on a Geiger-counter tour.
Kentucky first opened the Maxey Flats Nuclear Disposal Site in 1963. You'd think that two decades after having dropped the big one on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they'd know a little more about the proper disposal of radioactive materials, but this was the original Maxey Flats method of nuclear waste disposal:
Dig some trenches
Throw in nuclear waste, which was stored in metal drums and cardboard boxes.
Cover 'em up and walk away.
By the 1970s, environmentalists discovered that this primitive hazmat storage method created an ecological nightmare. It contained not only the soil but also the groundwater and the local water supply. Oops. Dumping stopped in 1977.
Those who come to the defense of such things point out that the stuff in the dump site is only "low-level" radioactive material. Others think this is a bit like saying that having one's head chopped off is a low-level amputation, or that Hillside Strangler Kenneth Bianchi was a low-level serial killer. A source claims Maxey Flats is filled with "transuranic" waste such as plutonium, and tritium has been found in streams three miles away. Low level, indeed.
According to news reports, Maxey Flats is now covered in some sort of protective black plastic and underground filters and sensors have been installed to supposedly ensure that no radioactive escapes. One report says that water from underground springs is routinely tested for unacceptable levels of contamination before being released into a local creek.
We've heard anecdotal legends of mutations and anomalies that have supposedly been brought on as a direct result of Maxey Flats. However, we haven't seen any of these firsthand, and no one can conclusively prove any connection between these legends and Maxey Flat's contamination.
Maxey Flats will probably never be on top of anyone's weirdest-places-to-see list. But list or not, you can't get in, anyway. It's a restricted area that's fenced in and patrolled-which is, no doubt, all for the best.
