National Portrait Gallery Visit and Film Shoot - 23/01/20
National Portrait Gallery:
Visiting the national portrait gallery and looking at all of the different kinds of portraits that can be made helped me with ideas in my project. I mainly liked the modern portraits because it was what I was most interested in, compared to the traditional painted portraits.
‘DAME ZAHA HADID’ By Michael Craig-Martin
The first piece of artwork that caught my eye was this digital drawing that kept changing through different colours, the colours are chosen at random by a computer software that comes up with infinite combinations, and it reminded me of the Julian Opie workshop we done and I liked how that came out and It gave me the idea of drawing over the images I take and add a lot of detail to the backgrounds so that it can match the street photography setting that I want to do.
‘FALSE POSITIVE, FALSE NEGATIVE’ - Jane & Louise Wilson
Another piece I liked was this artwork where these faces are shown marked with camouflage patterns designed to scramble the face recognition software in CCTV footage, the mirror surface in the background reflects the viewer, who shifts his or her position from the subject to the object of surveillance. What I liked about this was the distortion aspect to the work and how they've layered different colours and shapes over the faces and it changes the facial features, this is something that I would like to try with my own pictures that I take in this project.
Film Shoot:
Whilst around London I wanted to shoot on medium format black and white film and get some street photography pictures and some candid photography as well, I used a Holga 120 GCFN. First I started taking pictures of people from our class and then we came across a skateboarding park and I tried to take pictures on film, but it was too dark because it was undercover so the image didn’t come out and then we found a guy who was blowing bubbles, which I thought would look cool on film. Then whilst everyone was taking pictures a dad and his daughter came along and she started to play in the bubbles and I thought that it would make a nice candid photograph. And then to finish off the film I took some around college of Jade, Nat and Matt whilst they were smoking and tired to get candid shots of them.
Contact sheet:
Darkroom prints:
10 second exposure:
12.5 second exposure:
After looking at the print in the light I realised that it was too dark and you cant see the picture, so I changed it to a 10 second exposure and it came out a lot better.
10 second exposure:
10 second exposure:
when I done a test strip for this picture it looked like 10 seconds was enough, but after looking at it in the light I realised that it was too light and needed a bit longer because the negative was dark as well, so I redone it at 12.5 seconds.
12.5 second exposure:
once I had redone it but at a little longer exposure time I still saw that it was too light and were wasn't enough contrast in the image, because this was the last print I done in the darkroom I didn't have enough time to reprint it at a longer exposure, when I print it again I will problem either do a 15 or 20 second exposure to make it a darker image, if that doesn’t work then I will have to start playing the filters and levels on the new;argers to make the image the right contrast and exposure.
10 second exposure:
Scans:
after printing some images in the darkroom I scanned in the film as well to see what time images look like digitally and with the right exposures. After scanning them all in I edited them in. Lightroom to add more contrast and definition to the images and make them so that they’re easier to see, because some of the images was really dark on film.
I really liked how these images came out using the Holga camera, at first I wasn't too sure how it would turn out because there isn't any settings, just a focus, and option for a flash and an option for normal more or bulb mode, but in the end, despite some images cot coming out because they’re too dark, I really liked how the images I took looked. I would like to use colour film in this camera and use the different colour flashes it has in it to see how they show up on film and what shooting g colour film with this camera looks like.
