A scene that I believe showcases how Horikoshi is quick to sacrifice meaningful character moments for a cheap laugh is the faux interview with Mt. Lady.
By itself, the purpose for this scene I think could have been done more effectively instead of just pretending to be in front of a camera (and it feels annoying as hell when all it’s doing is reminding the viewers AGAIN who these characters are, in case you somehow forgot), but whatever. And we also get more material of Bakugou being insufferable (and Todoroki acting like a cardboard box by simply accepting Bakugou’s insults.)
And then we get to Izuku.
We get an inner monologue from him about finally showing his progress on his handling of Blackwhip. And even though it’s a tiny tendril, Izuku is clearly pleased with where he’s at, because now he can go up from here!
And does the scene push the idea that we are supposed to be proud of Midoriya on his hard work?
(Materializes through the screen and slaps your face) OF COURSE NOT YOU FUCKING FOOL!
Every single individual looks completely underwhelmed at what they just saw. Like they were expecting more. Like Midoriya was supposed to suddenly whip that exact giant ass black mass THAT NEARLY HURT/KILL HIS CLASSMATES and have it completely under control.
I can imagine a few of them feeling this way, but every single one of them? Horikoshi is just doing this to make Midoriya look bad. I absolutely refuse to believe there’s not a single character who would react differently (their ACTUAL characterization) to that.
Todoroki, who understands the struggle of balancing two quirks, and would probably feel compelled to help Midoriya out? Apparently not.
Uraraka, who was quick to praise Midoriya in anything in the past such as the quirk assessment test, and can plainly see how much pride he has getting a hold of a new dangerous quirk? And Iida, Midoriya’s other best friend? Does he clap his hands in the air like a seal and says, “Bravo!” to Izuku’s progress? Nope, they’re not allowed to feel that.
Tokoyami, who has another dark-based quirk and could relate to Midoriya’s struggle? Does he give a simple phrase of encouragement, or even think to himself, “Slowly, a new Brother of the Shadows will come to be.”? Why the hell would he possibly think that?
Does anyone else, such as Yaoyorozu, Shoji, Ojiro, or hell, even Hagakure, comment on that while not powerful, Midoriya’s ability on handling essentially two quirks is very impressive? Of course not. Instead of being funny, this scene comes off that no one actually supports Midoriya and it made me sad for him and how it assassinates pretty much most of Class 1-A’s characteristics, instead of allowing them to act naturally.
And the cherry on top? The one with the closing statement that is supposed to sum up what we the audience are supposed to feel? “Don’t be proud of something so weak.” By the one trick pony that has had his ONLY quirk for so long that he doesn’t appreciate LEGITIMATE progress. Fuckin little shitbird.
(Sighs tiredly) Hang on, gonna go watch the scene...
(One scene watch later)
... I want to kill, EVERYONE there for not supporting the kid for getting control over a quirk that caused so much damage!
Why aren't his friends cheering him on?
Why wasn't any of the adults proud of him?
Why is Izuku always the butt of these mean spirited jokes?
Why can't my son just be praised and feel proud for himself for once in his goddamn life?

The 5 stages of grief
The MHA fandom is NEVER going to move out of the denial stage of grief if Horikoshi doesn't bring Bakugou back. We will collectively ignore reality and all pretend know that Bakugou is fine, everything is fine. BAKUGOU IS FINE!!!!

i’m angry that izuku’s past is completely overlooked. so many writers do that to their characters and it’s infuriating. if you gave them trauma then fucking take responsibility. tragic backstory are only cool if they continue to impact the character’s day to day life (to a realistic extent only of course)

i live in an alternate dimension where katsuki bakugou is not forgiven by izuku midoriya, even if he gets character development because izuku midoriya deserves the right to resent or even hate his former bully. endeavour is also not redeemed. uraraka is not sidelined and neither is iida. the main trio is uraraka, iida and midoriya. bakugo and todoroki are given the chance the grow as a person and heal from their trauma. there is more focus on the students being, well, children. because they are children. they're teenagers. they should be allowed to act as such.

until death do we remain
dkbk | 578 words | some angst
Katsuki was never the same after the war. He tasted death – felt the blood drain, sight blurred, his muscles stiffening and that dull rattle of his lungs collapsing. Afterlife wasn't a worry for him, but he still felt fear when the darkness consumed him. In life, he was a promising young hero with aspirations to become number one. In death, he was nothing.
Revival felt like breaching water, coughing and retching until you have enough air to breathe. It's not the first time he has woken up in a hospital bed, but it was the first time he saw his mother cry. Contrary to his lies, death didn't feel like falling asleep then waking up the next morning. No amount of therapy sessions, doctor visits, or time with family and friends will ever snuff death. It's permanent.
Sleep felt like passing, so he wouldn't sleep, not until his body crumbled into a heap of strewn blankets. Food didn't give him pleasure anymore, so he hated eating. Fighting and climbing and studying and patrolling – all enthusiasm for those dissipated on the battlefield.
His friends noticed, of course. Denki and Hanta tried to continue on like nothing happened, but Katsuki never became angry or short with him. He would be silent. Eijirou and Shouto tried to comfort him in their special ways, but Katsuki never reciprocated their words. Silence. Best Jeanist, All Might, Mr. Aizawa, the Big Three – they all tried to console him. They saw him, dead on the field, dead on a bed. Nothing.
Katsuki was more than quiet: he was lost. He isolated, ignored and shrugged away every instance of life. He didn't choose life; he didn't choose death. Living felt like limbo. He didn't feel alive.
That's what Izuku saw, why he watched from a distance and took notes on Katsuki's behavior. That's why during hero training, when Katsuki sat against the far wall with his knees to his chest and his chin tucked, Izuku approached him. Step by step, further away from his friends and classmates chattering to each other. Katsuki didn't even react when Izuku stood before him – that same glassy, far-away glaze over his eyes. He didn't grumble or turn away or snapped at Izuku for speaking to him. Nothing that felt like...
"Kacchan," Izuku says quietly, and still, no reaction.
That's why, instead of walking away or calling out again, he sits at Katsuki's feet, legs wide, and scooched forward until his inner thighs met with Katsuki's ankles. His arms lazily wrap around his friend's body, fingertips barely touching behind his back, forehead meets forehead.
"I'm here, Kacchan," Izuku whispers in their tight, enclosed space.
Katsuki responds with a choke, then a shudder, then sobs. Izuku could almost taste the salt of Katsuki's tears, could feel them drip down Izuku's neck and into his shirt. He could feel the whimpers along his arms, the sniffles against his nose. He knew Katsuki's cries grew louder, enough that 2-A quiets down until every gasp bounced off the walls like tennis balls. He knew there would be questions, concerns, maybe some comforting words or hugs from the girls, but Izuku ignored them. This is their bubble, their apologies and regrets and confessions.
"I'll protect you," Izuku swears, "From this day until our final days, you'll be safe with me."
And, for the first time in months, Katsuki raises his eyes. Red sees green, and Izuku sees the glimmer of life in that gaze.

I'll never forgive horikoshi for writing a group of villains where basically all there gripes with society are entirely justified, giving them a massively humanizing arc then writing them as cartoonishly evil

So I’d like to talk about a problem that I have with the introduction of characters in My Hero Academia
First of all, how is that we only found out about Star and Stripe at her introduction and didn’t have any sort of build up to her despite her being the Number One Hero of the U.S. and having one of the most powerful quirks in existence
I mean seriously despite everything about her we heard nothing until she was introduced
But how about we talk about the Big Three of UA
Despite the fact they are supposed to be a big deal in the academy we didn’t hear a peep about them until they were introduced
Here’s a fun little possible introduction for them that could’ve happened earlier in the story, they were there at the USJ to help evacuate the kids
(Also how the fuck does the Big Three of UA work? Like does every third year have them or are the ones we know the only ones so far?)
It would’ve given us an earlier introduction them and showcase their combat potential without needlessly beating down the pride of the kids
Which brings me to Nighteye why didn’t we know that All Might had a sidekick who knew about OFA despite him earlier in the story (while he is talking to Recovery Girl) talking about the people who know about OFA and he didn’t mention his former sidekick
Also why didn’t we learn about Edgeshot’s quirk until in the stupidest moment ever he becomes Bakugou’s new heart
Characters just come out of nowhere with no buildup or prior mentions and we’re just supposed to act like they were always there
With the they’re written in it’s as though they came out of thin air instead of simply leading their own lives until they become more involved in the story

BNHA 362 SPOILERS AHEAD
I was reading comments about Bakugo on tiktok/twitter and I thought damn they sound like edgy middle schoolers trying to sound cool - then I realized they probably are ahahah
I really liked the chapter. I don’t think he’s gonna come back, I think he’s gonna stay dead cause of the signs we got in the previous chapters (Hori closed his arc making him apologize properly to Izuku) and the way he’s drawn in this chapter. Bakugo’s close ups were so good, epic and super detailed, and Hori specifically drew the heart crumbling/exploding into pieces. I don’t see why bothering to do so if he was planning to bring him back, he could at least have avoided the heart panel or he could have drawn him laying with the face down instead of showing us his lifeless face. I don’t know how to explain it, but his panel-drawing decisions make me think this death is for good.
I’m okay with this death, honestly. People say he needed an epic battle before dying but I think BNHA its not a stereotypical shonen, it has seinen touches, and this is an example. Its not realistic that Bakugo gets to fight so much, being a teen with a quite simple power, despite how powerful and good at using it he is, when even the nr 1 American hero failed. He had his role in the story, a very important one, and probably will still have some influence cause we got clear hints he’s connected to the nr 2 holder.
His death could give so much to the story. Deku will be crushed by grief, pain and guilt for being too late. This will probably be the last drop before he unleashes the top level of OFA.
Bakugo’s death will affect class 1A, bringing them all together, and I think it will also be a terribly painfulmoment for Aizawa and All Might.
He’ll be the symbol of the war against AFO, and parallel Izuku’s path: while Deku came from the dirt to become the most powerful, Bakugo came from the top and ended up dying to gain some time for Deku to come fight AFO, leaving his pride and sefishness behind, finally understanding his friend’s struggle.
Truly an extraordinary character writing from Horikoshi sensei.
