First week in France!
This is my diary for the next year.
I arrived in marseille on thursday 27th august and caught the bus to aix. lucas met me at the bus station and helped me take my cases to the hotel (which i for real did not need but at least it was one night doing something exciting for 120 euros!)
we went to his flat so i could see what i would need to buy, then went for a nice walk to casino. it was so hot. got there and bought a lovely baguette and some ham and some cacuhuetes and beer but forgot an opener but managed to open the beers on the bench! a proud moment. we ate in parc des collines de cuques and then walked back to his to meet joe, going past cuques on the way and little did i know, my bedroom for the next 4 months. we met joe, caitlin, and millie outside and headed to le forum in town. had a few pichets de rosé and got to know everyone! the waitress was so nice and tried to find us the cheapest way to do it lol.
they dropped me back at the hotel which was a bit breakdown inducing but i made it! next morning got an uber to cuques and got checked in in less than an hour, did have to pay 1440 euros which was a bit painful. no wifi ! so got into room and turned around really to go to carrefour. had a lovely time in carrefour with millie and lucas but spent far too much and plus everyone is wearing masks but no one is distancing! stress!!
got back to my room and decided not to go swimming as i had contacts in and was knackered so just spent the afternoon sorting stuff before i went to get esme from the bus staiton (still friday) and brought her back to cuques. managed to convince her to come out with us and we had pizza on cours mirabeau and then had a drink in place des cardeurs! (fiver for a beer seems to be good value for here).
saturday was time to take esme to carrefour so i got a few more bits, then think we just chilled most of the afternoon. headed out for an explore and a drink, had a bottle of wine each, then an aperol, so died a bit, hated the aperol then but im ok with it now! wandered about aix and found the old airbnb before we went to charlys!
bit hungover sunday morning so had a nice lie in and spent the day avoiding going to marseille really (dictator joe). went for another walk round aix to find the flower market with esme and lucas then had a nice picnic in the park. tried to buy alcohol but casino was like ireland on good friday all the alcohol covered up with tarps! so went back to the park and shared a bottle of wine with esme before heading back for an early night before class.
class was DEADLY 4 hours of french with only 10 mins break? although it is challenging so i do feel it is helping, was so knackered tried to get wifi twice on monday but to no avail as she thought my first name was miss. took 2 more goes on tuesday but managed it.
made friends with zoe marina and inke and went for a drink monday night and enjoyed an aperol spritz before i tried to have an early night for tuesday morning. tuesday was a deadly morning but managed it. nice class and talked to kitty quite a bit even round the bibli. so like lots going on. had a chill afternoon, went to monoprix with zoe and marina and found granat mate.
more class tomorrow. considering if its worth it. having a lovely glass of wine, vieux papes grenache merlot, will search out. ok post up be sad try again tomorrow. maddie xxx

Quenching my thirst for Urbanity: Week 7, Spain
Wow. It’s been one of those weeks that have been crammed full of stuff - from arriving into València to now feeling settled in the city, from connecting with new people and clients to rekindling my love for urban exploring. It’s been a week full of sunshine and surprises.
Tumblr media
My first thought is that in light of the current Covid-19 crisis, this blog feels truly ridiculous and self-indulgent. What started as a handful of people showing flu-like symptoms has escalated into a pretty scary global health threat, and I must admit I’ve gone from passing it off as ‘something that will blow over’ to really taking it seriously. I’m not into scaremongering, but I now see the potential impact of a virus like this on each and every one of us and on the liberties we are so used to.
All that considered, it still feels important to document our travels and to celebrate the good stuff that’s still happening. Life here in Spain feels fairly unaffected by the Corona virus at this stage (apart from a conference I attended today being about 75% empty), but we’re also following developments across the global stage where life really is being affected. I would at least say that it’s encouraging to see the way in which countries are rallying together and catalysing action to tackle this crisis (if only we could do the same for the climate crisis). Our own plans have been affected as we were headed to Italy next, but for now I’m going to focus on the last seven days that have passed here on the Spanish coast and which have marked our seventh week on the road. In reflecting on this I hope to send out a little ray of sunshine!
Tumblr media
(image) The sun sets from our parking spot in Valencia and we’re thinking of friends and family around the globe.
This week started with our final day on the road coming into València. We were treated to a chilly ocean swim, a daytime wander around Castellón, and an adventurous evening drive up to an incredible panoramic camping spot.
On that first day of the week we woke up in an eerily deserted coastal spot, and then drove a little further south to ‘Playa Miami’ to have an ocean swim and a wash under the outdoor beach showers. Locals wrapped in layers walking past thought we were nuts, but were all pretty friendly and made us feel very much welcome - which is such a nice feeling when you’re in residential neighbourhoods and you’re concerned about being perceived as unwanted van-dwellers...
I was pretty chuffed to find a cheap refill for our gas bottle in Playa Miami too, half the price that we’d paid in France a month earlier. Spain is definitely a fair bit cheaper than France, not only in terms of fuel but also food shopping (which makes sense given that more fruit and vegetables are grown here). Restocked with supplies and setting off again, we continued southbound towards València, making our next stop at Castellón de la Plana for a lunch break.
I didn’t know much about Castellón, but George and I were enamoured by its character and spent a few chilled-out hours there.
Tumblr media
(images, left to right) People-friendly streets with integrated bike lanes in Castellón, gorgeous orange blossom on our walk into the city, and one of a few murals I spotted and really enjoyed there.
The first thing we observed was how cool the city’s public transport was. The tree-lined boulevard we had parked on was a key spine providing access into the city, and while we opted to walk along its generous pavement, the road also offered a bus route and city bikes. The buses weren’t just any old buses though. They were electrified buses with movable electrical conductors which flipped up and down depending on if there were overhead powerlines. The bus effectively acted as a tram, moving in a dedicated lane and with raised stops with digitised signs.
Closer into the city, the buses merged with normal traffic lanes and (presumably) ran off batteries which store power from being charged by the overhead lines. The bikes were also pretty innovative - being the most basic design out of all the city bike schemes we’ve seen but clearly being well-kept and effective. Seeing places like Castellón, which isn’t even one of the major cities in Spain, simply offer inventive and effective urban mobility solutions as part of everyday life gets me even more frustrated about the state of transport in the UK and Australia. We could learn a thing or to from mainland Europe!
Walking from the edge of Castellón into the city centre and old town, our journey was a delightful multi-sensory experience. Orange trees blossomed, letting off a sweet aromatic smell, and electric buses left the streets peacefully quiet. The town itself boasted attractive historic buildings like the Cathedral and Theatre, with pedestrian-only lanes animated by the mid-afternoon lunch break (which sees shops shut down and cafes come to life between 2ish and 5pm or so). After a coffee and cake in a charming plaza, we hopped back into Suzi and continued on our way towards València.
Up a steep and sketchy road, our parking spot for that first night offered one of the most incredible views down towards València and across the ocean.
Tumblr media
(images) Tackling the ascent to our camping spot to the north of Valencia. Not sure if George is loving the 4WDriving or fearing for his life!
In order to feel safe and secure we decided to park a fair way out of the city, and were not disappointed by the camping spot we chose on Park4Night. Suzi handled the rocky ascent really well (even when she was still in 2WD) and we finally reached the parking spot on El Picaio in the Parc Natural de la Serra Calderona, next to the Santuari de la Santisima Verge de la Medalla Miraculosa, a small catholic chapel atop the mount.
With a celebratory beer in hand, we watched the sun set over the ocean and looked into the distance at the city of València, beyond the rocky hill and the green expanses. I felt overjoyed to be in such a stunning spot and really cherish these moments which are free and yet bring us so much value.
Tumblr media
(images, left to right) Walking to a vantage spot from our parking, a couple of celebratory beers at the top, and the chapel we parked next to.
On Wednesday, George and I drove into València. I visited once before back in 2012, but had very few memories of the place and didn’t really know what to expect this time. The main reason that this city was on our itinerary was cause of a guy I met through Twitter, four years back. Ramon is a Spanish economist and urbanist, who was undertaking some research in Australia back in 2016. He discovered me online and we were brought together by a shared interest in placemaking, eventually meeting for a drink along with one of his colleagues at the Bank Hotel in Newtown, Sydney. We have since stayed in touch, and I followed the impressive progress he was making as Chief Strategy Officer at the emerging ‘Marina de València’. The more I learnt about the waterfront project, the more it seemed that La Marina was an intriguing subject matter for a documentary, and as such it was arranged that we would come and stay in València to film.
Reconnecting with a like-minded individual like Ramon after meeting four years ago has been a wonderful affirmation of the power of networking, the internet, and sharing with others.
Not only will Ramon feature in this upcoming documentary about La Marina, a transformative project on the Mediterranean coast, but he has been the most welcoming host we could have asked for. He has hooked us up with a safe and well-appointed place to park up, which is a key consideration when staying in a city, and he’s been a friend and tour guide too, introducing us to so many passionate individuals and revealing this city’s incredible places and the stories behind them. If George and I decide to stay in València forever, it’s Ramon’s fault!
Tumblr media
(images, left to right) Creamy skies over La Marina, our friend and urban strategist Ramon, and some of the new branding for the La Marina, which I’m really fond of.
Against the backdrop of this picturesque city, the week that has ensued has been a mix of really getting to know La Marina, the usual film editing and vanlife admin, working on some exciting commercial videography projects and exploring this new Spanish city.
We coincidentally picked the craziest time of year to come, when the city’s annual festival, ‘Las Fallas’, marks the start of spring.
We’ve signed up for the city’s bike hire scheme, which although a little heavy, are a really easy way to get around the city. It also really helps that there is an extensive network of bike lanes, well signed, separated from traffic and all joined up to one another. On Thursday we used the bikes to explore València by day, pairing a ride around iconic large-scale landmarks like the Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias with a meander around more human-scaled, everyday places like the twisting streets near the Mercado Central and the old town. Other days have seen us cycle into the city at night, when the continuous cacophony of people setting off fireworks and festivities spilling out of community centres (‘las casales falleros’) marks the start of Las Fallas.
Tumblr media
(images, left to right) One of the remaining city gates retained from Valencia’s historic city walls, wandering the streets during Fallas celebrations, and the Centre del Carme brought to life for a night-time concert.
Las Fallas is pretty nuts, a pagan festival which was reappropriated as a Catholic celebration and is now a mash-up of satire, religion and anything related to fires and fireworks. It’s just hard to believe the Valencianos sustain this level of partying and putting up with perpetual fireworks for more than two weeks...
On Saturday afternoon, we filmed a free concert at La Marina, one of many socially-oriented initiatives which make what could be an otherwise exclusive yacht-owners’ paradise a place for the citizens of València to come, hang out, and connect to the waterfront (of course, there are yachts here too, but the place just has a really open and inclusive vibe). After the concert, we took another bike ride into the city centre (about 30 mins from the Marina where Suzi is parked up), this time for a jam-packed evening which started with a free concert at the Centre del Carme contemporary art space and ended with tapas and a midnight tour around the city’s landmarks with Ramon. After a cycle back ‘home’ at 2:30am, with full bellies and hearts, I was reminded why I love the eclecticism and vitality of cities so much.
Visiting València has strengthened my passion for urbanism and that renewal has certainly been a highlight of the week.
Stepping away from my ‘career’ as a placemaker last year was a big decision for me, and a lot of my focus over the last twelve months has just been to get the van built and make this trip happen. I haven’t spent much time in a city since we were living in Sydney, where we had access to many of the assets and activities that urban life can offer. So spending a considerable amount of time here in a major city, and especially making a documentary about La Marina, a strategic urban development with placemaking it its heart, has got me super inspired again.
Tumblr media
(images, left to right) George attracted to a camera shop (like a moth to the light...), delightful laneways and street art, cycling around the City of the Arts & Sciences.
There was one really special moment this week, when George and I stopped mid-afternoon in a small plaza. We had been wandering through the old part of town, just south of the magnificent ‘Turia park’, a green corridor that runs through the heart of the city, and we found a spot to stop for a beer in the street. This plaza wasn’t necessarily anything special, and it certainly didn’t feature any dramatic design or grand gesture, but there was something about it that George and I both picked up on that made it a really great urban space: a place.
Perched on a wall with a cheap lager in hand, we analysed the square, full of the dynamism and complexity that just can’t be created overnight or by one master stroke. There was a restaurant with seats that spilled over onto the pavement, walls layered with peeling paint and posters advertising raves and protests, a bunch of homeless people sat nearby a lone tourist who was eating churros, bought from a temporary van selling the sweet treats for the festival period. On all sides, apartment buildings of different shapes and sizes, though mostly 4 to 5 stories, punctuated by balconies hosting flags and flowerpots and the occasional ‘to let’ sign. And of course, there were plenty of people sitting, standing, chatting, reading, busking, eating, looking and just being. And (surprise surprise) there wasn’t a chain store in sight.
A city which is layered, complex and contradictory, shaped by many hands, worn, colourful, intriguing to the eye, fun, full of confusing juxtapositions which harmonise and clash all at the same time - that is a good city.
I’m excited to see what this coming week has in store for us here in València. Wherever you are, remember to stay safe in light of the virus that dominates our headlines, but don’t forget to enjoy the layered spaces and places around you too. *Footnote*:
After finishing writing this post, I was informed that Las Fallas has now been postponed, yet another devastating impact as Covid-19 shuts down our cities. I'm gutted not to experience Las Fallas, and more importantly for all the companies, organisers and attendees affected. Pretty scary times ahead. We need collaboration, resilience, clearmindedness and positivity more than ever.

Portal De Ses Taules, Vieille Ville De Dalt Vila

Costa Blanca Boat Itinerary: What destinations can’t be missed while sailing this Spanish coast stretch?
With over 160 kilometers of coastline, Costa Blanca is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations. White beaches, blue sea, rocky coves, and an infinity of bars and restaurants follow one another from Denia to Pilar de la Horadada, giving well-being and fun to millions of visitors every year.
CONTACT US FOR YOUR CHARTER IN COSTA BLANCA
We have decided to share with you a possible itinerary to discover some of the best destinations Costa Blanca offers its visitors, strictly to be discovered aboard one of our rental boats.
Where are we?
The Costa Blanca is located in the south of Spain, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and is located south of the city of Valencia. It is also part of the autonomous Valencian Community.
Why exactly Denia?
City of just over 40,000 inhabitants located about 100 km south of Valencia. Not only a renowned tourist resort, but Denia is also an important maritime and commercial hub with Ibiza and the entire Balearic archipelago.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN DENIA
Not to be missed, both the Muslim Castle and the Archaeological Museum where numerous finds from the Roman and Moorish periods are preserved. From the hill where these two buildings are located, you can see a beautiful panorama that goes as far as the Parc Natural de Montgo, about 10 kilometers away. The excursions inside this park, together with the innermost Cavaleres Caves and, obviously, the beaches of Les Marinas and de las Rotes represent the main points of interest for those who want to learn more about the city and its surroundings.
From a gastronomic point of view it is worth tasting the shrimps, traditional local fishing, still very popular today.
Where to embark on sailing in Costa Blanca?
The “Marina de Denia” tourist and sports port is a resort located a short distance from the city center. An ideal place to practice sports and nautical activities will be the starting and finishing point of our itinerary.
This marina not only offers numerous berths but is perfectly equipped for nautical tourism with activities such as rowing, kayaking, paddle surfing, or jet skiing.
What will our Costa Blanca boat itinerary be?
The starting and ending point of our itinerary will be the beautiful town of Denia. In between, we will visit a series of locations, more or less known, that characterize this stretch of the Spanish coast. Let’s find out together with a 9-day boat itinerary:
Day 1: Set sail from Denia
Once in the city, we just need to reach our boarding point in Marina de Denia. Here we will meet our skipper and the crew onboard and, after a short briefing to be sure that everything is ready for the trip, we are finally ready to sail!
Day 2: from Denia to Calpe
Our first destination is Calpe, a town that represents the right compromise between tradition, nature, and tourism.
A thriving tourism economy of hotels, pubs, bars, and restaurants has developed along its coastline of about 11 kilometers. Here, however, resists a naturalistic oasis of great importance, namely the Ifach peak, the famous limestone block about 330 meters high, a refuge for various species of birds as well as a treasure trove of biodiversity also from a floristic point of view. The excursions on the Penyal d’Ifac are truly exciting and offer a breathtaking view of the coast.
Obviously, there is no shortage of beaches and all the outdoor activities that can be practiced in a modern seaside resort.
Day 3: from Calpe to Benidorm
Nicknamed the “Manhattan of the Mediterranean”, Benidorm is the most cosmopolitan of the cities on Costa Blanca. Here mass tourism has changed the urban layout in a more significant way than elsewhere, transforming a fishermen and farmers village into a more than the modern city of about 70,000 inhabitants.
Benidorm has two main beaches, both very long and deep, Playa Levante and Playa Poniente. In addition to the crystalline sea and white sand, they offer an incredible amount of services: sunbeds; parasols; deckchairs; footboards; showers; bathrooms; play areas, and spaces dedicated to the countless activities that can be practiced on the beach and in the sea.
Day 4: from Benidorm to El Campello
El Campello is located in the heart of the Costa Blanca, between long stretches of beach and rocky coves. An ideal setting for beach lovers (don’t miss Playa Muchavista) and water sports who find optimal conditions here to cultivate their passions. Not just the sea, however. In fact, it is enough to venture a little inland to discover various nature trails for the delight of trekking and mountain bike enthusiasts. Among the main ones we point out the Canelobre Caves (Cuevas de Canelobre), great speleological interest cavities, or the archaeological site La Illeta dels Banyets, a small peninsula rich in archaeological finds.
Day 5: from El Campello to Alicante
Alicante is the most important of the Costa Blanca cities and is its main air and sea hub, as well as being the region’s first economic center.
Talking about tourist attractions, there is really an embarrassment of choice. A visit to the Castle of Santa Barbara, located on top of Mount Benacantil, the hill overlooking the city, is not to be missed. This fortress bears the signs of different denominations that have taken place in this area over the centuries.
The “Explanada de Espana” promenade is also worth a visit, as well as the various churches, above all the San Nicolas Cathedral.
Day 6: from Alicante to Tabarca island
Set sail from Alicante we head towards a small pearl of this sea. Tabarca Island is a small paradise on earth just 20 km off the city coast.
It is the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, with a population that in winter only counts a few dozen people and which instead comes to life during summer.
It is the perfect destination for snorkelers. Its waters are in fact part of a nature reserve and are protected for their excellent quality and for the biodiversity of flora and fauna, while its small beaches and coves are wonderful for spending a day immersed in nature.
After sunset, when the day tourists have left the island, Tabarca becomes simply magical. The ideal place to stop in the evening and enjoy the peace and relaxation of this place lulled by the waves.
Day 7: from Tabarca Island to Altea
Bohemian town characterized by narrow and cobbled streets, flowery roundabouts, white houses, and numerous lookout points where you can stop and contemplate the landscape. Unmissable is the Church of La Madre de Deu de Consol.
For the rest, here too, sun, sea and beautiful beaches (above all Playa del Albir and Playa de Cap Blanch) where you can spend a pleasant day of relaxation and fun.
Day 8: from Altea to Javea
Jávea is located about ten kilometers south of Denia. Its historic center offers significant points of architectural and cultural interest. Above all, the Church of San Bartolomeo, not surprisingly, declared a national artistic monument already in the 1930s.
The port area is the most developed and it is there that many accommodations, leisure, and catering facilities are concentrated
Day 9: visiting Denia
Back at the port of departure we just have to say goodbye to the crew and spend our last day enjoying the sun of Denia.

Beautiful, white sandy beaches, a warm blue ocean and sunshine are what make Ft. Lauderdale an idyllic vacation spot at any time of the year. Located on Florida's east coast, even the hottest days are tempered by gentle breezes coming from the Atlantic ocean.
Recently Ft. Lauderdale has grown in popularity as a GLBT vacation destination and is now recognized worldwide as a gay-friendly resort. There are several hundred gay-owned and operated businesses providing a multitude of options for the gay traveler. With a host of bed and breakfasts, resorts, bars, clubs, restaurants and shops this ocean city has become renowned as a gay mecca separate from its neighbors Miami, South Beach and Key West. From the blue waves and white surf of the beaches, to the Florida Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale offers sea, sun, shopping, arts and entertainment for the discriminating gay vacationer.
Just a short walk from the ocean is a vast network of canals and marinas which has earned Ft. Lauderdale the nickname the Venice of America. Here you will find spectacular millionaires' homes with sprawling lawns down to the waterfront and yachts which are floating homes just waiting to venture out onto the open seas. The water taxi is transportation for the locals, which also provides a canal tour with a glimpse at the lifestyles of the rich and famous. For just five dollars you can ride all day from one end of the canal system to the other, with plenty of sights to see and visit along the way. There are no gondolas here, but it is worth planning a whole day to tour these canals, or just use the water taxi as a means to go for dinner at a waterfront restaurant.
Between the ocean and the canals is where you will find a community rich with gay guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and resorts. This is the perfect neighborhood to stay in and be close parc central residences location  to everything the city has to offer. Although the bars, nightclubs and restaurants are close by, a rental car is a must. They are very affordable and can be rented at the airport or through your hotel concierge and they make it very easy to move around and visit the many attractions available to the gay traveler.
Located three blocks from the ocean and a short walk to the gay beach is the Flamingo Inn Amongst the Flowers, a European style boutique hotel with tropical island luxury. We highly recommend this affordable and upscale gay resort as a perfect home base to enjoy all that Ft. Lauderdale has to offer. Every room and suite has been recently remodeled and renovated with comfortable four poster beds and modern bathrooms. The courtyard includes splashing fountains, a large swimming pool and comfortable deck chairs with sun shades for the very hottest time of the day. Enjoy a relaxing massage poolside, simply bask in the sun, or enjoy a good book in this tranquil retreat. The full bar Happy Hour, complete concierge services and ample parking are added benefits. Perhaps the greatest amenity that the Flamingo has to offer is the friendly and helpful staff who will ensure that you have everything you need for the perfect vacation and provide all the requisite knowledge about the local community. The Flamingo Inn strives for and achieves perfection in gay accommodations.
Located about a ten minute drive from the beaches is the township of Wilton Manors, which is the gay community of Ft. Lauderdale akin to Greenwich Village in New York. Home to over forty gay businesses and sparked by the highly successful George's Alibi video bar and cafe, Wilton Manors has everything to offer in shopping and entertainment. After your first visit you will probably find yourself returning to try the different restaurants and bars as part of your evening pleasure. Dorothy's Cafe, Hamburger Mary's, Chardees,Tropics and Simply Delish are just a few of the cuisine options that are sure to please in this quaint and charming gay-friendly southern Florida community. Shopping in Wilton Manors also offers plenty of variety at Bottoms and Tops, Gay Mart, Miguel's, Zoo Two 4 Shoes and Zoo Two Clothing Company just to name a few of the fun boutiques. A trip to Ft. Lauderdale is not complete without some time enjoying the village of Wilton Manors for a gay community experience.
Without a doubt, Ft. Lauderdale is best known for its beautiful white sand beach with the calm, clear blue ocean which stretches for miles. Not surprisingly, with a large gay resident and tourist population there are three recognized gay beaches. These can be found in the north, at 18th Street, centrally located at Sebastion Street, and in the south at Dania Beach, with the central beach probably being the most popular and close to most of the gay accommodations. These gay areas are easily identified by the rainbow umbrella sun shades and the sunbathers they attract. With beach volleyball and other ball games, people-watching in these areas can be a most enjoyable way to pass a hot sunny afternoon with cool dips in the ocean when it gets too hot. There are also plenty of cafes overlooking the beach with spectacular views to enjoy when food becomes a priority. This makes for the idyllic part of any well-earned vacation.
The Florida climate affords year-round vacations, but spring is probably the most temperate and popular time of year to visit. The Ft. Lauderdale Pridefest takes place in March and claims to be the largest Pride celebration in Florida. With entertainers and events, this weekend is planned for residents and tourists alike to show their pride. The Gay Rodeo is also a big attraction. In addition to rodeo events at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie (just outside of Ft. Lauderdale), there will be a Country and Western Dance, Pool Party,Wilton Manors Nightlife Tour and a Southernmost Hoedown in Ft. Lauderdale. For anyone who has experienced a gay rodeo, this is certain to be a popular gathering on the IGRA circuit.

Tumblr media
Not everybody has the time to watch a 15 or 20-minute in-depth interview in video format. Not only does video drain your mobile's battery a lot faster than just audio, a lot of the time you cannot just put it down and listen to what's being said without the phone turning the audio off when the screen goes dark. That's why in 2016 we started making podcasts of all the interviews that we do, and they have proved very popular. Links to the corresponding video interviews can be found in each podcast's description below. If you have any suggestions, ideas, or would like to sponsor our podcasts please do let us know. Thank you. In this exclusive interview, John Roberts gives us an update on the status of elephants in Thailand, what the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) does, as well as how the year 2019 ended and what they have planned for 2020. John tells us what Jungle Bubbles are, who is staying in them, how many elephants people can expect to see, whether they are safe, and how they plan to expand this rather unusual idea. All that and much, much more in the interview. (video) Your browser does not support this audio element. Lavender Fields, Bouillabaisse, and Calanques: The 4-Day Weekend in Marseille
Tumblr media
You already have some understanding of Provence; it’s a fancy region in France, oui? Oui, that’s right. Provence is chic, since it includes the glitzy Riviera (think Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez). It’s not as wine-drenched as Bordeaux, Burgundy, or the Loire Valley, but in place of those vineyards are purple lavender fields that roll into oblivion. They also happen to be just a short drive from Marseille, Provence’s capital and largest city (and France’s second-largest after Paris). A vacation anchored in Marseille offers all sorts of sensory rewards: There’s the smell of lavender, outdone only by the savonneries—the famed soap makers. There’s the taste of tomato-fish bouillabaisse stew, swapped for ratatouille if you’re seafood-averse (or especially hungry), chased by French wines that may or may not be Provençal. There’s the blue Mediterranean expanse to savor as the sun warms your skin, though it’s best earned by hiking through the forested Calanques National Park. After your trek, you’ll settle into a walled-in calanque cove to soak up the natural beauty and isolation. ]] Inn-to-Inn by Bike in Southern France The city itself is restless, in a good way. It has the reputation of being grittier and more grounded than Paris—which is a compliment, really. There’s rarely a quiet moment in the Vieux Port, between the ferries to Count of Monte Cristo-inspired Chateau d’If, the aperitif crowd, and the late-night local revelers. It’s teeming with top-tier restaurants that don’t know how top-tier they are. The city is grounded and world-class, without the urge to show it off. Four days is not enough, in my opinion, given how much time you could spend exploring the region. But if that’s all the time you’ve got, here are the places to spend it.
Where to Stay in Marseille
]] Hotel Dieu—InterContinental Marseille: You really can’t miss seeing Hotel Dieu, just off the Vieux Port, acting like a palatial gateway to the old town. You might even mistake it for a royal palace, though it’s actually an 18th-century hospital that was operable until the early aughts. In 2013, it reopened as the InterContinental—Hotel Dieu, and is now one of the most luxurious homestays in Marseille. There’s the Michelin-starred Alcyone onsite, serving inventive Mediterranean fare, as well as the terraced cocktail bar Capian offering aerial views of Vieux Port and Notre-Dame de la Garde. As for the rooms, well, it’s an InterContinental after all; you get stately accommodations designed in mineral tones to match the city’s rocky coast. The icing on the cake is the onsite Clarins spa, fit with a warm indoor pool, experience showers, hammams, massage and spa treatments, and an adjacent fitness studio. Le Petit Nice Passedat: The 16-room Le Petit Nice Passedat offers 5-star luxury with views of the sea—and private terraces from which to take it all in. It’s connected to the 3-Michelin-star restaurant by the same name, serving eclectic regional seafood (get the Marseille favorite bouillabaisse fish stew multiple times in town, but order the deconstructed, reimagined version of it from the fixe prix menu). Both hotel and restaurant are passionate undertakings of noted chef Gérald Passédat. While you’re a couple miles from the city center, it’s no inconvenience given the day or two you’ll spend near the coast or daytripping from the city altogether.

What to Do in Marseille
If you plan to hit the city’s key tourist attractions and want unlimited public transit access (in particular its bold-and-bright orange metro), then consider purchasing a Marseille Tourism Pass for intervals of 24, 48, or 72 hours (for 27, 37, or 43 euros, respectively). You can purchase it at various spots in Marseille: the Tourist Office and Convention Centre, La Capitainerie des Docks, Vieux-Port and Saint Charles metro stations, or Airport Information Office. Hike the Calanques: See “Day Trips” below. Vieux Port (Old Port): Marseille’s central bustle seems to swirl around the Vieux Port, a hotel- and restaurant-lined marina that stays boisterous at all hours of the day and night. You can nestle in for aperitif or a late-night bar crawl, stock up on soaps and market souvenirs, catch the boat to Chateau D’If, or marvel at religious relics like Saint Victor’s Abbey (5th century), or Saint-Ferréol les Augustins (15th century). ]] Going on an Outback Helicopter Pub Crawl Outside Darwin Buy soap: Since the 17th century, Marseille has been known for soap-making, and the city is still famous for its 72-percent-oil recipe. And because it’s more of a tradition than a reliable global export these days, Marseille soap makes for a terrific gift or souvenir from your travels. Save some room in your suitcase, and never mind if you have yet to appreciate this craft: You’ll have a hard time narrowing down which scents and shapes to bring home—and for next to nothing. (At the very least, you’ve got to get some lavender soap, since it’s Provence.) Stock up at these stores and makers: La Savonnerie Marseille, La Maison du Savon, Soap Factory — Le Serail, or The Marseille Soap Museum. Unité d’Habitation/Corbusier’s Radiant City: Le Corbusier’s architecture is characterized by the marriage of colorful expressionism with functional spaces, and this “Radiant City” apartment complex is one of the most famous structures. (It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and French National Monument.) This residential complex largely influenced the brutalist movement and redefined urban living for its residents, thanks to symmetrically designed apartments and thoughtfully executed public spaces. Most notable is Le Corbusier’s use of color, which you’ll see from inside and out. Book an English tour while in town for an eye-opening tour at the complex, including a preserved apartment room. (The others are now inhabited by some of Marseille’s upper class. A pre-booked Saturday 10 a.m. tour is requisite for viewing, unless you otherwise visit the onsite cafe or stay in the onsite hotel. ]] Coastal R&R: Head to the coast for aperitifs, sunbathing, long walks on the cliff, romantic dinner views, and more. Just note that sandy beaches are few and far between and rather small, hence why most residents are totally fine lying out on the rocks. If you crave sand, point yourself to Plages du Prado, Plage du Prophete, Plage Borely, Plage de L’Estaque. If you want to relax under the sun on a reserved beach lounger, drink in hand, with a ladder into the big drink, then call one or two days ahead to Le Bistrot Plage, a restaurant and public beach club that will have you feeling like you’re at the Riviera, minus any absurd prices. 15 Beaches That Are Better in the Fall Chateau d’If and Frioul Archipelago: You might know this 16th-century army fortress as a key setting in The Count of Monte Cristo. Chateau d’If on the smallest island of the Frioul Archipelago, just two miles west of the city. Book a roundtrip ferry to and from the Old Port to the Chateau for a 45-minute tour (plus ferry travel time), and you can even hop off at Ratonneau, one of the larger of the Frioul Islands, for lunch or leisure, before returning to Marseille’s port. (Walk to the cozy but sandy Plage de Saint Estève from the Frioul Port if you want some snacks and beach time away from the city.) MuCEM and Villa Méditerranée: If you fancy some art, history, or both, then check out MuCEM, or the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, as well as the neighboring exhibition hall Villa Méditerranée. At the very least, take a walk to the end of the harbor where they reside, to gawk at their marvelous facades. ]] Cathédrale La Major: In stark contrast to the neighboring and aforementioned art museums, this massive 19th-century Byzantine-Roman-Revival–style cathedral is all-imposing. Off the Beaten Path: 27 Epic Views Every Hiker Should See Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde: Marseille’s compass rose, if you will, this hilltop Catholic basilica can be seen from nearly everywhere in the city, and offers stunning panoramas for that same fact. Parc Borély: In a city not known for its parks, the 17-hectare Borély stands out as one of Marseille’s prettiest features. Catch some fresh air in its formal gardens, mosey across the promenade to the coast, or visit the neighboring botanic gardens. La Vieille Charité Cultural Center: History, culture, art, and performance come together at the 17th-century grounds of La Vieille, in the heart of Marseille’s old quarter, Panier. Orange Vélodrome: Be it rugby, soccer, or stadium concerts, the Orange Vélodrome is probably playing host to some event while you’re in town. You can also tour the century-old, ever modernized stadium, in case you can’t catch a game.

Where to Eat and Drink in Marseille
Pizzeria Chez Jeannot: It’s not just a pizzeria—really, get the steak or the catch of the day—but it’s very much a staple tucked inside the cozy port de Vallon des Auffes. It makes for a romantic date night, or a great group dinner. Book ahead. Chez Fonfon: A perfect place to slurp bouillabaisse and savor a bottle of wine. The fancy Fonfon resides next to the aforementioned Chez Jeannot inside port de Vallon des Auffes. Yes, it’s worth coming to this nook twice in one weekend. Carlotta With: Seasonal dishes, local ingredients, all done real nice and French-like. Come for any meal, or a respite between. How to Order a Pint of Beer in Some of Europe’s Biggest Beer Hotspots Le Café De L’Aabbaye: Plan at least one hours-long aperitif here, alongside Marseille’s hip and scene-y crowd. You might even see a few French A-listers enjoying the same vices. (We did, apparently, according to our sharp-eyed and starstruck hosts.) Le Four des Navettes: Marseille’s oldest bakery (dating back to 1781), and perhaps still its most notable. Get their famed orange blossom biscuits. ]] Le Carrousel: Come here for craft beer, with a dozen on tap and two dozen by the bottle. La Côte de Boeuf: This Vieux Port staple has every cut of meat you might want—not just beef—and 400 kinds of wine with which to chase it all. 18 of the Best Modern Cocktail Bars in Europe Le Miramar: Have your pick between the bouillabaisse or bourride stews, the fixed menu (with the likes of scorpion fish and truffle bass), or the shellfish platter for two. Le Café des Épices: A deep-dive into colorful Mediterranean flavors, with dishes like octopus-pan-fried chard and confit lemon boneless rabbit. Madame Jeanne: Natural wines paired with fresh, small-menu dinners—like confit rabbit-shizo squash. Where else can you get that?

Day Trips From Marseille
Calanques Hiking: The rocky coastline of Marseille leads to the Calanques National Park, a 200-sq. mile grade-changing wonder with an equally rugged shore. It’s most spectacular from its various inlets, the actual calanques, which are walled in by dolomite or limestone and collect the crystal-blue waters in their public basin. You’ve got to earn this reward though, by parking your car and hiking through the national park itself—some of them are reachable under half an hour, others twice or triple the distance. It can be unpredictable, but think of this as a beautiful hike with a relaxing reward at the end (on rough, rock-covered beaches), rather than framing it as a beach day preceded by a hike. I think that mentality will better suit the experience—and will inform the necessary footwear you must wear for the walk. Rent a car; pack water, sunscreen, lunch, and a backup phone charger; and head to the Calanques for at least one full day of your visit—and budget the day, starting early to maximize water time. And yes, you can also boat into some calanques from nearby Cassis or other small towns. But that’s kind of cheating. Oh, and during the hottest months of the year, namely July and August, the park is susceptible to fires, and oftentimes closes for entire days. So check the park calendar the day before you go, to see the forecast and clearance for the following day. The Best Budget-friendly European Cities For Travelers ]] Avignon or Aix-en-Provence: Provence provides plenty in lieu of humbler urban day trips. The medieval, walled-in historic center of Avignon makes for a charming and humbling day trip, just one hour by car and half that by train. Or opt for Cézanne’s birthplace, Aix-en-Provence, which is buzzing with academic energy. It’s a half-hour from Marseille by train or car. Lavender fields near Luberon and Verdon: Want to see Provence’s trippy purple lavender fields? Rent a car and point it to the various farmlands between Luberon and Verdon. Do this in late spring through mid-July, and you’ll feel like you’re on another planet, with sprawling rows of purple—not to mention the soothing scent lingering in the winds. As a landmark, you can route yourself to the picturesque town of Valensole for dinner or lunch—you won’t miss the lavender fields on this drive, so long as you’re in season.
