Musk’s policies are turning Twitter less transparent, making human rights documentation more difficult, and putting the platform in conflict with the EU. While the company is unlikely to bend to public pledges to protect human rights defenders or war crimes documentation, the EU may hold the keys to rekindle Twitter as a platform that can be leveraged to advance justice and accountability for international crimes.

I was just discussing Putin's fictious 'family values' that he was boasting about to Tucker Carlson in this post.
Yulia Navalnya, widow of Alexei Navalny, released a video exposing Putin's fictitious 'Christian faith'. That was another boast the dictator made earlier this month to Tucker Carlson, who sat stupefied, as though he were in the presence of the Dalai Lama, rather than the presence of a genocidal dictator. Putin claimed that Westerners were more 'practical' and Russians more 'spiritual'.
Now that we all see Putin continuing to torture Navalny's family even after he murdered Alexei Navalny, everyone can judge this Russian 'spirituality' for themselves. A dictator tortures a grieving mother, a grieving wife, and grieving children, by bribing prison officials to tell lies and refuse to grant the most basic dignity in death to a man who was poisoned, falsely imprisoned, tortured, and eventually murdered.
Navalnaya points out the most obvious moral fraudulence of a man who is careful to be filmed kissing Orthodox icons while maintaining a terror state that murders dissidents.
She also points out later how Putin hid behind religious faith to justify his murderous war in Ukraine, which has now exceeded two years. The Russian Orthodox Church, led by ex-KGB agent Vladimir Gundyaev (now known as Patriarch Kirill), blessed Putin's murderous intentions under the guise of his 'one people' doctrine.
Patriarch Kirill described his 'one people' doctrine of Russians and Ukrainians as including the same Russian Orthodox Church and the same language, Russian. It was Patriarch Kirill who blessed Russian soldiers going to fight someone else's country without justification.
And it has been Patriarch Kirill who has been totally silent when Russian bombs have not only massacred innocents (the same people he claims are part of one entity), but also damaged Ukrainian churches.
It's not just Putin's faith that is fake; the entire Russian Orthodox establishment is fake. It exists on paper as a church, but in reality functions as an embezzlement and money laundering outfit for the Russian government, something Alexei Navalny exposed in his anti-corruption documentaries.
More importantly, the Russian Orthodox Church serves to sanitise and whitewash the ruling dictatorship by presenting the dictators (Putin and Lukashenko) as deeply spiritual men who are single-handedly preserving the religious and cultural foundations of the Russian state and Russian-speaking peoples. (As we know, they define the Russian state and Russian-speaking peoples in imperialist terms, namely, in terms of the non-existent Russian Empire.)
The church falsely advances the idea that without these dictators, Russia's stability would collapse and 'immorality', defined as Western liberal values, would creep in and cause moral ruin.
You had best believe that these 'spiritual' men are paid handsomely in bribes and luxuries like private jets to promulgate this false narrative. You had also best believe that despite their pontification about 'family values' and 'Russian culture', the Russian Orthodox Church has a long history of behaving in exactly the opposite way. Read about the state of the church and the morality of its priests and monks during the days of self-styled monk, Grigori Rasputin (c.1869-1916), as just one example. I put it to you that very little has changed since then.
We do not ask, but we demand: return the body of Alexei Navalny to his family immediately!

Leahy Law Fact Sheet - United States Department of State
Leahy Law Fact Sheet - United States Department of State
1. What is the Leahy law?
The term “Leahy law” refers to two statutory provisions prohibiting the U.S. Government from using funds for assistance to units of foreign security forces where there is credible information implicating that unit in the commission of gross violations of human rights (GVHR). One statutory provision applies to the State Department and the other applies to the Department of Defense. The State Department Leahy law was made permanent under section 620M of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, 22 U.S.C. 2378d. The U.S. government considers torture, extrajudicial killing, enforced disappearance, and rape under color of law as GVHRs when implementing the Leahy law. Incidents are examined on a fact-specific basis. The State Department Leahy law includes an exception permitting resumption of assistance to a unit if the Secretary of State determines and reports to Congress that the government of the country is taking effective steps to bring the responsible members of the security forces unit to justice.
The DoD Leahy law is similar to the State Leahy law. Since 1999, Congress included the DoD Leahy law in its annual appropriations act. The DoD Leahy law is now permanent in Section 362 of Title 10 of the U.S. Code. It requires that DoD-appropriated funds may not be used for any training, equipment, or other assistance for a foreign security force unit if the Secretary of Defense has credible information that such unit has committed a GVHR. The law allows for two exceptions to this restriction. The first in cases where the Secretary of Defense (after consultation with the Secretary of State) determines that the government of that country has taken all necessary corrective steps. This first exception is also known as “remediation.” A second exception exists if U.S. equipment or other assistance is necessary to assist in disaster relief operations or other humanitarian or national security emergencies.
2. How is the law implemented?
In cases where an entire unit is designated to receive assistance, the Department of State vets the unit and the unit’s commander. When an individual security force member is nominated for U.S. assistance, the Department vets that individual as well as his or her unit. Vetting begins in the unit’s home country, where the U.S. embassy conducts consular, political, and other security and human rights checks. Most often, an additional review is conducted by analysts at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. The State Department evaluates and assesses available information about the human rights records of the unit and the individual, reviewing a full spectrum of open source and classified records.
When assessing whether information is credible, the following factors should be considered weighing both the credibility of a source and the veracity of an allegation:
Past accuracy and reliability of the reporting source as well as original source, if known;
How the source obtained the information (e.g., personal knowledge obtained by a witness, witness interviews collected by a non-governmental organization (NGO), descriptions collected from government records, etc.);
Known political agenda of a source (both reporting source and/or original source, if known) which might lead to bias in reporting;
Corroborative information to confirm part or all of the allegation;
Information that contradicts part or all of the allegation;
History of unit and known patterns of abuse/professional behavior;
Level of detail of the GVHR allegation, including detail in identification of the GVHR, perpetrator (or link to an operational unit), and victim.
3. Can assistance be reinstated to units previously found ineligible for assistance?
Yes. Consistent with the exception under both Leahy laws, the Departments of State and Defense have adopted a joint policy on remediation that outlines a process for resuming DoD- and State-funded assistance to foreign security force units that are ineligible for assistance under the Leahy laws. This can occur when the Secretaries of Defense and State determine that the government of that country has taken, or is taking, effective measures to bring those responsible to justice. Such measures may include impartial and thorough investigations; credible judicial or administrative adjudications; and appropriate and proportional sentencing.

I'm not even anti-monarchy but all the BS round the coronation is just leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. I kind of feel is a cost vs benefit to whether I personally want one, and a democracy if we should have them.
I'm definitely more excited about Eurovision, and I'm more proud that we are hosting Eurovision. And we didn't even win, we got it by default as a deal with Ukraine.
Like I'm not marking the coronation, but me and my friends most certainly want a Eurovision party.
I value democracy before any kind of monarchy so the fact the messed up human rights crisis anti protest bills were rushed through bothers me deeply. Then on top of that certain people who they thought were likely to protest got sent threatening letters. When peaceful protest is fundamental to any kind of democracy.
There will be facial recognition cameras at the coronation. Which both of these things are things that go against core beliefs that I hold. They fringe on personal freedoms and race towards a dark future I don't want.
The pledge/oath doesn't feel British. Which bothers me too, we didn't have it in the past, why now? The part were you're not just pledging to the king, but all his heirs in the future. I feel also goes against democracy. Since if as a nation we want to get rid of the monarchy, that is extremely valid.
It feels were more of a wave our flags, and be like yay king kind of people. Not the dark really endoctrinated kind of people, and honestly I don't like that either.
Don't even get me started on the cost to the tax payers, and the fact Camilla is being crowned Queen.

Sept 18th, 2023 Last summer, the Adams administration put the brakes on a de Blasio-era plan to eliminate the Department of Correction’s use of medieval-like restraint desks for young adults in specialized units.  In the June 2022 reversal, jail officials said they did not have the proper staff or training  to eliminate certain controversial practices, like solitary confinement and the use of specialized chairs with ankle cuffs during various rehabilitation and educational programs.  But the draconian desks have actually led to a new increase in violence with eight people restrained to the chairs slashed over the past two weeks, including two over the prior weekend, according to Department of Correction records.  People in the desks are “just sitting ducks” stuck in one place who don’t have the ability to protect themselves if attacked, said a former Correction Department official who worked for the department when they began to use the restrictive chairs earlier in the de Blasio administration.  - - - Detainees in the unit who don’t want to be shackled to restraint desks can remain in their individual cells — and skip programming, Miller told the Board on Friday. But incarcerated people seeking to move out of the disciplinary unit must attend programs in order to make their way back to the general population.
absolutely NO ONE should be being subjected to this, but it is also relevant here that 85% of the people held in Riker's Island are held pretrial OR just couldn't make cash bail pretrial. Maybe you'd have appropriate staff levels if you weren't holding all these extra people!
Cash bail is bullshit and should be eliminated.

It's odd how these various allies, client states and vassals of The Most Powerful Nation in the History of the World™ generally lead us around by the short'n'curlies.
I always thought that energy independence meant that we'd be able to dropkick the House of Saud right into the International Court of Justice.
Guess not.

Quote
Beijing became concerned about this issue about ten years ago, when it became clear that its traditional ‘soft power’ approaches were no longer working. Despite generous investments in promoting its image, China was not treated better as a consequence. Indeed, on the contrary, the degree of Sinophobia increased in direct proportion to China’s growing economic power. Confucius Institutes were perceived exclusively as breeding grounds for Chinese propaganda. Even a public relations event as obviously successful as the 2008 Summer Olympics was accompanied by loud accusations of human rights abuses and speeches in support of Tibetan separatists. This is when it became clear to Beijing that what matters is not what is actually happening, but how it is reported on the internet. And online content in today’s world is mostly produced by Westerners and in the English language. As a result, not only the West itself, but also China’s neighbors, look at it through the eyes of the West.

a man is killed after arrest
a man has a fractured spine and is denied proper medical attention and denied access to a lawyer
the authorities could have not done this, they could've arrested people and not beaten them, but of course this is the pattern, this is what they do, anyone who acts against the government gets beaten, treated inhumanly, we see it over and over again in other places in russia as well. It's all too familiar. I expected this but perhaps they would be humane this time? No of course not! of course they'd violate human rights and hurt people. anyone who dared to stand up to them and tell the truth. Protesters are always taking their lives in their hands.

Just wanted to share this article, things are even more awful than we ever thought about ukrainian civillian prisoners
With russia, you should always prepare for the worst, and even then you'll be shocked
I especially "love" the order to build more camps till 2026. The audacity to think they'll still control Ukraine by that time. They'd better start making plans around how much ~russian territory~ will be under their control by then.

I documented multiple cases with @EuroMedHR of Israeli soldiers abducting blonde children from #Gaza claiming they might be abductee Israelis.
As Israeli forces are nearing my area of refuge, I just actually told my brother’s wife to dye her blonde daughter’s hair black! [@/MahaGaza on X.]
response to Maha Hussaini's report: "our families used ash to protect light-skinned children from being stolen by white settlers. In Palestine, they're dying children's hair to stop their children from being stolen. Removing children from an ethnic group to be raised by oppressors is one of the markers of genocide" [@/ 1KarenWyld on X.]

Journalist Maha Hussaini says that she has documented cases of Israeli soldiers kidnapping blonde children from Gaza claiming they might be abductee Israelis. (Illustrative photo) [@/ QudsNews on X. 01/07/24.]
I recently posted about this on my page. Thankfully a mutual of mine sent this to me. I addressed some of my perspectives about this horrifying and ongoing/developing story -which I will update here once I see Maha Hussaini or her fellow journalists sharing their documentations.
I just want to make sure that this is continues to be addressed/spoken about. This is beyond horrifying, and I hope those children are safely brought back to their families and loved ones -free from the IOF -because this is just insidious.

UN calls for probe as Israeli army accused of killing unarmed Palestinians
**Too bad the UN is a pretty useless organization that relies on self discipline. They don't have the authority to do anything but issue strongly worded statements. Unless the guilty party is going to punish themselves, it goes no further. This was written about 2 weeks ago so the # has risen since then.**
UN rights office calls for investigation into ‘possible war crime’ amid reports Israeli forces allegedly ‘executed’ 11 Palestinian men in Gaza.
The United Nations human rights office has called for an independent inquiry into allegations that Israeli forces “summarily executed” at least 11 Palestinian men in Gaza in what it called “a possible war crime”.
“The Israeli authorities must immediately institute an independent, thorough and effective investigation into these allegations, and if found to be substantiated, those responsible must be brought to justice and measures implemented to prevent any such serious violations from recurring,” said the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in a statement on Wednesday.
Al Jazeera spoke to several witnesses to Tuesday’s raid during which Israeli troops allegedly surrounded and stormed a residential building, going floor to floor to separate the men from the women and children, and then shooting dead 11 of the men in front of their family members. The men were in their 20s and 30s, survivors said.
“They saw us, men and their wives and children. My brother-in-law tried to speak and explain all in the house are civilians, but they shot him dead,” one survivor told Al Jazeera of the attack on families who were sheltering in al-Adwa building in Gaza City’s Remal neighbourhood.
The soldiers “forced their way into every home, killed the men and detained the women and children. We do not know their whereabouts. They did the same on every floor. All women were rounded up in one room. By the time they reached us on the sixth floor, they started shooting all men,” a woman said, adding that her father-in-law and son were shot and killed instantly.
Survivors also said that the Israeli soldiers also attacked the women and children after ordering them into a room in the residential block also known as Annan building.
“The Israeli soldiers rounded up all the women in one room, then fired three mortar shells on us, then kept shooting their machine guns at us,” a wounded woman said.
“I was hit with a bullet in my hand, my daughter in her head, my younger daughter was killed and my son is blind. My husband was executed in cold blood. All my other daughters suffered severe injuries, broken bones and flesh torn open. We were all hit by bullets or shrapnel,” she added.
Analyst Tamer Qarmout, an assistant professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, welcomed the UN call for an investigation into the “unlawful killings”, telling Al Jazeera that the key issue is how such probes are going to be conducted.
None of the entities that could investigate alleged Israeli crimes against Palestinians is currently allowed into the Gaza Strip, Qarmout noted.
Other witnesses recalled that the men were forced to strip before being shot, and one man said that “even young boys were not spared. They were all battered and bludgeoned. They suffered broken bones and are in hospital.”
There has been no comment from the Israeli military on the attack.
