Day Ten
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's been another long, but good, day.
Bedding down last night near Mablethorpe and as I was laying down a deer and foal stumbled right up on me! The foal froze up allowing me to get aome snaps in before shooing it off, but friends and family are now divided on whether this means I am now a Disney Princess or I get a free dinner. And it has been a long time sonce I had delicious venison...
As RAF Donna Nook occupies the rest of the coast up to Grimsby, I was left with little option but to head down the A road again, but hitting the road at 6am meant a nice lack of traffic and by the time it finally picked up I had put enough miles in to be closeer to Grimsby and back onto some nicer cycling infrastructure.
Riding that early also got me a glimpse of both a barn and tawny owl prowling over the fields!
After starting with the road inland, I dropped down the Cleethorpes to enjoy a nice ride around the seafront promenade, before heading in to Grimsby proper for a good break and a bit of breakfast.
From there, the route up to the Humber Bridge is very heavily industrialised, so I took a diversion down into the countryside to check the top of the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB. The last few days' wind has finally quietened down and without a xloud in the aky it made for some lovely riding, if a little hot and swathed in sun block!
From there I picked back up onto NCN route 1 to head up to the Humber Bridge, which did involve some hills but also some great downhills along the way. as well as an unfortunate patch of bridleways, but they did at least have a reward of much needed ice cream at the end. As well as a lil baby blue tit by the side of the trail!
After the expansive fields of Lincolnshire, crossong the Humber River felt a bit like entering a different country - suddenly trees everywhere! And with that we say goodbye to Lincolnshire and hello to the East Riding of Yorkshire!
Following the cycle routes through Hull was sadly less fun. I think it's the only point ao far on this trip where I have felt genuinely unsafe - cycle paths that put you in the middle of major roads, cars playing chicken on priority passes, taxis reversing around junctions and nearly flattening the bike, etc...
So I have departed Hull with all good speed, and luckily enough there is a long, long traffic-free cycle route heading out east, which I have followed past Hedon.
And with that it's time to find a spot for the night! We're back to the coast tomorrow aiming for Easington!

Part 14 & Part 15 & Part 16
Part 17 & Part 18 & Part 19
Part 20 & Part 21 & Part 22
After the night of the disastrous dinner with the Merchants, the weather turned gloomy again, and it was just as well. Since Frances had been trapped inside in any case, he didn’t care about the fine weather, or lack thereof. In fact, he didn’t care about anything anymore, and the things that once gave him pleasure such as riding, fishing, and camping out under the stars felt empty and meaningless to him now.
He had finally finished his studies, but only just. And now that they were done, there was little for him to do and nothing for him to look forward to. The mornings were spent laying in bed, and the afternoons were spent milling about the estate. His father now completely ignored him even more so than he had before. The rest of his family let him do as he would. He ignored them all, for the most part.
At night when the great hall was quiet, he would go down and play melancholy songs on his lute, which he was getting quite good at, truth be told. He would open a bottle of his father’s wine or mead, and drink himself numb until he couldn’t feel his fingers, which helped him play better. When the sky began to brighten with the dawn, he would finally retire. When he awoke with a headache, he would lounge in bed all day until the night came. Then he would do it all over again.
Tumblr media
One particularly gloomy night, Frédérique came down to the main hall at a late hour and interrupted his playing. He had been drinking the last of the Burgundy wine and remembering Gwendolyn’s kisses, so the sight of her was enough to bring him out of his musing. He could tell by the look on her face that she was going to say something he’d rather not hear, as she often did. She was always so serious and always wanted to talk. He hated the way she knew him sometimes better than he seemed to know himself, so he rudely closed his eyes and continued playing, hoping she would leave him be.
Tumblr media
“How long will you continue on this way?” He had no idea of how to answer her. “Do you think this is what Gwendolyn would have wanted? How do you think our mother would feel if she could see you now?”
At the mention of his mother’s name, he suddenly had no interest in playing anymore, and put the lute away, but said nothing. He didn’t want to think about her, as he missed her more than he say, and he had tired of crying. He had already cried his fill a hundred times over.
Suddenly she walked over to him and said in the most tender voice, “Will you not speak to me?”
Tumblr media
Sometimes she sounded exactly like his mother, especially when she was trying to be kind. The way she pronounced particular words and emphasized certain phrases was just like her. Still, he said nothing and began to walk away, but she would speak still.
“I miss her too, more than anything. Yet unlike you, I try to make her proud of me, even if I cannot see her anymore. I try to remember how kind she was, how generous she was, and how lucky I am to have been her daughter. I’m still trying to be the woman she wanted me to be. Won’t you try to do the same and be the man she wanted you to grow into?”
He stopped walking, and with his back towards her, he was able to answer honestly. “I don’t know how.”
She had disarmed him by speaking so eloquently about their mother, and he could feel tears well up in his eyes. Then she walked up to him and gently placed her hand on his shoulder. She whispered into his ear, “I know you can do better than this. Don’t let him break you anymore than he already has. This family needs you. She needs you.”
Tumblr media
Whether Frédérique was talking about Gwendolyn, or Francine, or his mother, he did not know. But he figured it could be true about all of them. “I won’t be here for much longer to keep this family going. It will be up to you to do so once I am gone.”
“I don’t know how to live with him anymore. He doesn’t trust me, and he doesn’t want me here. I cannot fight him anymore. I am spent.”
“So don’t. Stop trying to please him, and find your own path.”
He didn’t know what his own path looked like, or even what shape he wanted it to take. But he was too tired to look for answers just now, so he left her and crawled into bed. He was determined to forget everything she had said, but could not, and fell into a restless sleep with her words still on his mind.
Tumblr media
However broken Frances seemed to be, others would not be persuaded so easily by Marcelle to give up on their friends. Francine had made good on her word and had obtained the newest letter from Gwyn. Did it matter that she also took the opportunity to speak with a certain golden haired boy whilst carrying out this task? No one can say. But she had done her duty, and would do it again and again.
Tumblr media
“I got lucky this time,” Oswin had told her with a serious demeanor. “My mother told me that Gwyn has actually gone to see her sister in a village some distance from here. So I went and searched her room when she was occupied, and found this under her mattress, which is where she usually keeps my letters until she can read them. I hope you don’t mind that I read the map that fell out of it. I have made a copy, just in case we may need it.” He held out the letter to her, and the map it had contained.
Tumblr media
“Oh, Oswin! I am so grateful! Gwyn has gone to see her you say?! And a map?! That is the best news I could have hoped for!”
But he did not share her joy, and suddenly there was a touch of sadness that clouded his eye as he said, “None of this would have happened if she had married my brother. None of it. She ought to have stayed with us from the beginning. But nevertheless, she did not deserve the treatment she has received from your father. He swore to protect her, not send her away from the only family she has left!”
His words panged her heart, as she knew it all too well. Her father had caused so much pain and suffering by his selfish actions, and it was a bitter pill to swallow. She had felt she didn’t know him anymore ever since their mother had died. She resented him for leaving them all alone to suffer in silence, and for bringing Edyth into the house to spy on them.
“I know. That is why I am here...to try and offer a remedy for my friend, and my brother.”
“I hope he goes to her,” he said bitterly. “Because if he does not, then my brother will.”
At that, Francine said her goodbyes and hurriedly walked home. She hastily read the letter and handed the map over to Frances. Curiously, she recognized the handwriting on the map to be that of her father’s, and was surprised to learn that it was he who had drawn it.
Tumblr media
She told him everything when she handed it to him- that Gwendolyn was living on the outskirts of a tiny village far from their estate, and that Gwyn had gotten permission from Marcelle to visit her. She also told him what Oswin had said about his brother, but Frances was too full of hope to hear that part of it.
Tumblr media
“Where is the other map father keeps? I must compare the two!” Without waiting for a response, he immediately ran to the library. He rummaged through his father’s papers and scrolls until he found what he was looking for- a professionally made map ordered by the King, which showed the area along the Humber River and all of the tiny holdings and villages surrounding it.  He carefully compared the two, and estimated that it would take him just over five hours to reach her on horseback....maybe six. He hoped that if he left at night, it would be some time before his father found out he had gone.
Finally.
That night, after he had changed into a fresh pair of clothing, he took a long look at himself in the mirror.
Tumblr media
What exactly had Gwendolyn seen in him? Did she love him because he was an heir? Or had being an heir made him easier to love? Would she accept him if his father cut him off entirely, as he had threatened to do?
Maybe she loved you because you gave her the very best of yourself.
And that was true. He had given her all he had had to offer, and shared with her everything in his heart. He gave her his true self that so few got to see, and she had given it all right back to him.
Can you live without her? Yes. But I would rather not.
Tumblr media
He knew that if he didn’t go, he would regret it for the rest of his life. He had made her a promise, and he needed to keep it. His sister had been right. He wasn’t living up to anyone’s expectations- not even his own expectations of himself. And now that he could fulfill his promise to her, he must. He didn’t want to be like his father, and he didn’t want to be full of regret.
This was the path he would take.
If only she will still have me.
The hour was late and the cover of darkness was a welcome shield as he quietly walked out to the stables where he had hidden away his saddle bags and made ready his horse. He lead his stallion away from the estate and walked as silently as he could, until he was sure to be out of earshot.
It was numbingly cold, but so much was on his mind that the journey seemed to glide by steadily. By the time the sun came up he was already halfway there. It took him another three hours to arrive to the location on the map, which he assumed was some sort of Boarding House or Inn. While he rested and fed his horse, the biting cold began to numb him and he knew that he must press on.
For awhile, he thought he may be lost, because all he could see was a tiny ramshackle hutch in between a meadow and woods filled with birch. It seemed to be abandoned, but as he journeyed closer, he could see the roof was smoking and he could smell a hint of cooked meat in the air. Could this be where she was? Perhaps whomever was inside could direct him.
He trotted his horse closer now, and suddenly he was outside the fence, looking at a woman with dark hair and pretty face.
Gwendolyn.
She looked differently then he had remembered her. Thinner, but somehow more womanly. He whispered her name and she was looking straight at him. He could see the shock on her face, and his pulse quickened.
“Gwendolyn! Gwendolyn.....”

Avenue south residence
The Mimico hood sitting south of the Queensway and Royal York down to the lake front, has been one of the best kept secrets for value, when one thinks about living in Toronto. For buyers that have been priced out of the areas that are already popular and gentrification has already begun, many are opting for hoods still in transition where prices are much lower while still being relatively close to the core of the City. Being so close to downtown Toronto and the waterfront has many first time buyers flocking to this unique pocket of west end Toronto called Mimico.
To this day, Mimico has the feel of a lakeside town. Living close to the water has always been a huge draw with the enchanting greenery that surrounds the area. This is a waterfront neighbourhood with amazing and scenic parks and trails, boating and sailing clubs, as well as exceptional sporting facilities. Mimico is also close enough to downtown Toronto that you can be there in fifteen minutes. The northern part is called Mimico Village, with the southern area called Mimico by the Lake Village.
Unique to this hood are the number of sporting, recreational and parklands available to choose from. Known for their sports clubs, kids have been introduced to skating, hockey and Lacrosse at the local Mimico Arena. A number of professional hockey players have been developed from this area. The new MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence is a state of the art facility boasting four ice pads, where the Maple Leafs train and practice. Mimico's Tennis Club has one of the few red clay surfaces, which is friendlier on the knees. For the boating and sailing enthusiasts, the Etobicoke Yacht Club, Mimico Cruising Club and Humber Sailing and Powerboating Centre are all found in the Humber Bay Park at the foot of Parklawn Road. Avenue south residence  This magical park that hugs the lakefront also offers a wetland habitat for birds, a man- made peninsula with assortments of local wildlife, geese, swans, ducks and seagulls. Young and old alike enjoy the pond for model boats, the picnic areas and the trails and paths that wind along and through the park offering some of the city's best views of both the lake activity and the Toronto skyline. The Humber Bay Arch Bridge for pedestrians and bicycles connects the boardwalk along the water with the Martin Goodman trail which one can take to travel across the city to the Rouge River in the east. It's another route that those strolling, biking, running or blading, enjoy while taking in the beautiful vistas of Toronto's waterfront and the calm of the area.
Phase 1 of the Mimico Waterfront Linear Park was recently opened in 2008, running from Norris Crescent to Superior Avenue. The largest portion can be found at the newly transformed Amos Waites Park, with the cantilevered boardwalks overlooking a protected wetland area. Standing along this trail you have incredible views of the sailboats moored at the clubs with the CN tower in the background, while listening to the beat of the lake and the swans swimming by. Grab an organic freshly roasted coffee at the caf' called Birds and Beans that's beside the park, and relax watching the sailboats bobbing along on the waves.
Another huge draw to this area is the ease of transportation and close proximity to downtown Toronto. Those leaving the car behind can choose from the Queen Streetcar which runs along The Lake Shore, the Royal York bus connecting to the Bloor-Danforth subway line or the Mimico GO station off Royal York which takes approximately 10 minutes to arrive at Union Station. Motorists can take the Q.E.W. or Lake Shore Boulevard for a fast route to either downtown Toronto or out of the city

The 10 best Toronto parks to explore while social distancing
Tumblr media
While it can be difficult to maintain social distance, there are a few steps you can do to make it simpler. The status of the planet might look rather spooky as public areas empty and the city quiets. The greatest method to obtain some peace of mind is to go for a walk or be outside in a low-risk environment. During this tumultuous time, these are some of Toronto's best parks where you may find peace and quiet.
Gardens of Edwards
One of Toronto's largest parks is Edwards Gardens. Edwards Gardens covers 14 hectares of land between Leslie Street and Lawrence Avenue East in North York. This maze of fauna and flora, which is home to Toronto's Botanical Gardens, is the ideal place to be outside without being exposed to the elements.
Park Etiénne Brûle
Etiénne Brûle Park is located just north of Bloor Street West. Etiénne Brûle, the first French explorer to cross beyond the St. Lawrence River into what we now know as Ontario, is the name of this historic park. From the Old Mill to the Baby Point neighborhood in Etobicoke York, this tract of open space runs beside the Humber River. In this length of greenery, you'll discover designated fishing places as well as a lot of animals. It's a sure-fire way to distract yourself from the news.
Park in the River Valley
Except for the odd bikers, this stretch of route along the Don River is normally quite quiet. From Pottery Road to Corktown Common, the 200-hectare park stretches across the city. There's also a lot of public art all throughout the pathways along the Don River. This vast biodiverse area can be a great place to get away from it all while still feeling connected to the city.
Park High
There's a lot of natural beauty on the park's west end. It includes tree-lined walkways, a waterfront vista, and a chance to see a few cherry blossoms at this time of year. The park covers a total of 161 hectares, with a number of smaller parks inside it. There are various hiking paths and off-leash dog parks in the area. During this construction, the High Park Zoo will be closed, but there will be lots of walking paths to explore.
Gardens at Craigleigh
Craigleigh Gardens Place, in Rosedale, is a lovely park for our Midtown naturalists to explore. This tranquil neighborhood park is about 3.4 hectares in size. Take a walk through the mature tree canopy or down the ravine trail that connects to the Don Valley Brick Works to practice safe social distance.
National Park of the Rouge River
There is presently no entry fee at Rouge Park because all tourist services have been halted for the foreseeable future. Because the park is still open to the public, Parks Canada recommends that you take additional measures when accessing the area and have all of the necessary hiking gear on hand. The massive park spans 7,910 hectares of land and connects Toronto, Markham, Pickering, and Uxbridge to one other. There are a plethora of pathways throughout the massive park, which is home to some of the most diverse wildlife in the Greater Toronto Area.
Park of Sir Casimir Gzowski
Sir Casimir Gzowski Park is located along Toronto's waterfront. From Lake Ontario's Humber Bay to the mouth of the Humber River, this series of parks follows the water's edge. Bike lanes, beaches, and walking trails abound in this network of parks and boardwalks, making it ideal for cyclists seeking to get out of the house during their seclusion.
Park Downsview
In the northwest area of Toronto, Downsview Park is an urban greenspace. This 240-hectare park, which is located between Dufferin and Allen Road, is full of bicycle routes, walking trails, ponds, and wildlife. This huge park, which has a military background, has had to constantly change over hundreds of years. Downsview is a terrific place to enjoy some momentary calm, with several nature paths scattered throughout the park.
Splitting Leslie Street
On Lake Ontario, the Leslie Street Spit is a headland with a lot of wildlife, bicycle routes, and city vistas. There are a lot of diverse species to see when exploring this southern extension of Leslie Street, which is an important bird location. This lakeside location gives a wonderful perspective of the Toronto skyline if you need some good material for the gram. Access the Spit from Tommy Thompson Park, which is located south of Lakeshore on Leslie Street, which is the peninsula's main entrance.
Park Sunnybrook
This 154-hectare natural park is a great way to get away from it all for a while. This park, which is located north of Leaside and south of The Bridle Path, contains 25 distinct biking paths, an off-leash dog park, and a variety of walking pathways. Sunnybrook Farm and Stables are also located in this picturesque neighborhood.

Bridge
structure carrying a road, path, railroad, or canal across a river, ravine, road, railroad, or other obstacle.
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the origin of the word bridge to an Old English word brycg, of the same meaning. The word can be traced directly back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰrēw-.
Bridge b ridge bride b rid ge
Writing the word bridge
The Stamford bridge as in the stands at Chelsea where we would all stand and sing songs it was very memorable singing with thousands of other people standing up at the end the excitement and the being pissed off when they lost.
When chris did a pub in wan chai called the bridge and he would never come home drinking all the time.
Old bridges in the uk stone are just beautiful we had ones over the canal where i lived and loved them
Reading the word bridge
Making bridges to reconnect a old friendship
The Severn bridge London bridge Humber bridge Ching ma bridge that chris built there are many great bridges Golden Gate Bridge i crossed many years ago.
Saying the word bridge
The game bridge i dont think would ever played it
When a pet has died and they say its passed over the golden brigde
Sf
Does this definition support me no it has a positive vib wit singing at the bridge and being pissed off that chris off him drinking in the bridge all the time so a polarity
Bridge ridge
Bridge
To cross from one place to another side place
To create a link within myself to have realizations to open up and expand.
How will you live this word? I will live this word bridging within myself opening up parts within myself exploring myself and strengthening myself bringing things together.

Brighter Days Ahead at The Oculus
Design: Giaimo
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

In Fall 2020 Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) and Giaimo revealed a new temporary public art installation, Brighter Days Ahead, at The Oculus Pavilion in Toronto as part of a revitalization initiative. Designed by Toronto architecture firm Giaimo, and sponsored by Creative Silhouettes Inc., Brighter Days Ahead is made of radiating yellow stripes that represent sun rays shining through the pavilion and also reference the vibrant future planned for this derelict modernist structure. Located in the City of Toronto’s South Humber Park along the Humber River Recreational Trail, the art installation will be up for the next few months until the restoration of the pavilion takes place in 2021.
photo © Doublespace Photography
Designed in 1958 by architect Alan Crossley and consulting engineer Laurence Cazaly, built in 1959, South Humber Park Pavilion AKA The Oculus is a fantastical space-age park shelter. While it stands out as a unique modernist structure in Toronto, The Oculus’ sculptural quality and use of concrete is part of a generation of ambitious and optimistic public pavilions built in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s that can be found scattered throughout the City’s parks system. However, over the last few decades the pavilion has suffered significant neglect resulting in a deteriorating, underutilized public space. In July 2016, concerned community members rallied to save The Oculus from plans that included partial-demolition. It was named a “Building at Risk” by ACO Toronto, and a successful online petition was launched.
In Summer 2019, The Oculus Revitalization project led by ACO and Giaimo was announced as one of five projects selected for Park People’s Public Space Incubator Grant (PSI), funded by the Balsam Foundation and Ken and Eti Greenberg. The PSI program aims to encourage and support the next generation of creative public space projects by providing access to funding and professional networks. ACO and Giaimo are using the grant to transform The Oculus into a welcoming community gathering place along the trail by restoring and cleaning the existing pavilion as per its original modernist appearance, and also implementing new flexible and contextual outdoor furniture. The revitalization project also includes a series of engaging and educational programming and public art to provide the community with ongoing occasions to visit the site, explore the space, and learn about Toronto’s built heritage. Given the sculptural quality of the structure, the pavilion has unique acoustic qualities that create an outdoor echo effect when one enters the centre of the space, and as such there is exciting potential for music and performances to occur within the space.
photo © Doublespace Photography
The project has been further supported by HNR Properties, Friends of the Pan Am Path, and Creative Silhouettes Inc., and ACO and Giaimo are working closely with the City’s Parks, Forestry, and Recreation as well as Heritage Planning department. The restoration and programming was originally scheduled for 2020, but due to COVID-19 it has been postponed until 2021. While we wait for the restoration to start, Brighter Days Ahead gives visitors a unique opportunity to explore the pavilion and learn about the space.
The Oculus Heritage Status More details on The Oculus pavilion’s history and cultural value can be found in Brown+Storey’s South Humber Park Pavilion Heritage Evaluation Report. Since starting The Oculus Revitalization project, ACO and Giaimo have put together a Building Condition Assessment Report and applied for additional restoration funds through the 2020 Toronto heritage grant Program. The grant has been approved by City Council, but the properties must be designated to receive funding. The City’s Heritage Planning department will be recommending designation of the pavilion under Part IV of the Ontario heritage Act and will bring a report forward to the Toronto Preservation Board and Council prior to the release of the grand funds anticipated for 2021.
About ACO Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) is a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the conservation and reuse of structures, districts and landscapes of architectural, historic and cultural significance across Ontario, Canada, through education and advocacy.
Since 1933, ACO has helped save hundreds of buildings across Ontario, and has raised awareness of the importance of conserving our built and environmental heritage. The Oculus Revitalization project is being co-led by ACO Toronto (local branch) and ACO NextGen (program for students and emerging professionals), each of which are managed by a set of dedicated, knowledgeable, and passionate volunteer Executive Members with diverse backgrounds, including architectural history, landscape architecture, curatorial studies, and communications.

TORONTO ON A BUDGET IN SUMMER BY A TORONTONIAN
Tumblr media
Toronto is an incredible, multicultural city that uses visitors social, natural as well as gastronomical experiences. It's feasible to discover this vibrant city on a tight budget with a couple of expert ideas thanks to Toronto indigenous Lauren from Global Locavore! Right here are 6 of her preferred summer tasks both on and off the beaten path. Stick around till the end recommendations concerning navigating!
1. THE CITY TRAVELER: SCENIC TOUR THE CITY BY BIKE
Exploring the city by bicycle is a perfect method to explore Toronto's numerous areas. Follow this plan for an economical trip via a few of my preferred areas.
Resident's itinerary: Start your journey at the Coxwell Opportunity Train in Greektown. Below you can find a Toronto Bike-Share stand where you can lease a bicycle for the day. Go out along Danforth Opportunity to appreciate the personality of the area. Transform south along Broadview Avenue as well as take your first quit at Riverdale East Park to obtain a caffeine hit at the local favourite-- Fowl Coffee. Continue on to Queen Street where you will turn west as well as head to the Distillery District. Here you'll locate art studios that present gorgeous works done by regional artists.
Grab a sandwich from Bricks Bakery for a budget-friendly lunch before heading back to Queen Street. Cycle throughout town and quit as soon as you reach the Queen West area for some fashionable window shopping.
Your last stop is Trinity Bellwoods Park. If you're dehydrated, get a craft beer from Trinity Bellwoods Brewery ($ 4-8/ bottle). While I can't formally excuse drinking them in the park, you'll see lots of residents doing so.
Expert's advice: This route does not follow roads with designated bike paths, nevertheless you can click to check out the dozens of bike courses around Toronto. The Bike Share program does not give safety helmets, so bring your own. This course remains mainly on bike lanes, nevertheless beware on Queen Road due to the traffic. Biking is not the same as cycling in particular European countries, nonetheless generally, vehicles respect bikes.
Budget pointers: To keep this bike rental on budget plan, you require to obtain a bit creative. (More info concerning the bike share program). The day pass consists of unrestricted half an hour rides, but after the first thirty minutes, it will cost you per thirty minutes. Hidden Toronto: a growing list of the city’s best-kept secrets
Tumblr media
RUPTUREDS OF CREATIVITY MAKE A CITY WORTH RESIDING IN
" I reside in Toronto," starts the commentary of the Oscar-winning brief Ryan, "a city in Canada where I see way a lot of shades of grey for my own good health."
It can be tough to reside in a place whose very appearances are a continuous reminder of our failure to do much better. Where a lot of streetscapes are specified by indifferent condos as well as the same handful of financial institutions and also pharmacies at their bases. Where cuts to transit make rush hour an increasingly derogatory experience yet also theoretical troubles to drivers are considered undesirable. Where we're told by our politicians that good points are past us which the "TORONTO" check in Nathan Phillips Square is unworthy of even the moderate funds required to keep it around for another year.
Where public investment is dealt with as a benefit and not a right, to be administered on the basis of political efficiency rather than need.
Thankfully, there are the buttons.
In each of the cellar restrooms at Otto's Berlin Döner in Kensington Market is a switch on the wall. Oversized and also unmissable but entirely unmarked, there is no demand to press them, yet you can. And also in the midst of the sweltering heat of August or the unlimited winter season of March, you will certainly be delighted.
Easter eggs like these are what make the city-- any type of city-- worth living in. They are the bursts of creativity or charm, oddness or fancifulness, that make it possible to get through the days during the greyer months when doing so would otherwise be an obstacle. Occasionally they are destinations, but often they are unforeseen. They are physical signs that a person, in a remote or very recent history, made the effort to care, to add something to the city material that would intangibly enhance the experience of it.
The Peter Frying pan statuary in Glenn Gould Park, as an example, is not special. It is one of 6 the same copies of Sir George Frampton's original in London's Kensington Gardens. It is not even the just one of its kind in Canada.
Yet with its 9 fairies, seven computer mice, 5 bunnies, 3 birds and one each of a snail, squirrel, salamander and frog-- all circling Peter as well as Wendy-- it brings a sprinkle of childish goal to the northwest corner of Opportunity and St. Clair.
There is no naturally sensible reason it should exist the park's pianist namesake had not been also born when it was installed. That it was donated by something called the College Heights' Association "to the spirit of children at play" is a peculiarity of background, and that it lingers to the present is a strange present.
The value of a city is gauged, partly, by its capability to provide the unforeseen and to emerge as an area where such shocks are welcomed.
It has to do with the city as source of nourishment as well as stimulation-- the city as play area, the city as theme park, the city as location that encourages exploration. The city as a home that makes you grateful to receive its prizes.
In the late 2000s, I belonged to the Toronto Psychogeography Society, which is a fancy means of stating I took place regular night strolls normally arranged by Spacing editor Shawn Micallef. The trips typically came under two categories: venturing with parts of the city that we 'd never ever or else experience walking, or wandering through locations we thought about familiar but that still had keys to reveal.
There was likewise a third sort of walk: ones that travelled via areas well known to simply one of us. At that time, I was dealing with my family at Yonge and York Mills, a location I frowned at for its distinct lack of points. On the second coldest evening of the wintertime, the group came up to my location, and we headed off via the vacant Don Valley Golf links.
Held in the air by looming concrete assistances, the 401 crosses the gorge there using a substantial bridge that rises over the greens. We climbed up the high hillside at the west side of the bridge up until we discovered ourselves adjacent to the highway, at the protected tip of a fork in the roadway.
Cars and trucks zoomed past on both sides.
I had known about the bridge and also the remarkable industrial-ruin feeling of its base. I didn't know you might securely come eye to eye with the freeway, staring down traffic on one of the busiest paths on the planet. I had never done anything like it in the past.
In that moment, Toronto in February was okay. -- Jonathan Goldsbie

In an effort to block future outbreaks, China has cracked down on the trade in wildlife and closed some markets while enforcing strict containment measures that appear to have virtually stopped new local infections.
The WHO mission is politically sensitive, with the United States — the top funder of the UN body — moving to cut ties with it over allegations it mishandled the outbreak and is biased toward China.

“China took the lead in inviting WHO experts to investigate and discuss scientific virus tracing,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Friday.
In contrast, he said, the U.S. “not only announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization but also politicized the anti-epidemic issue and played a buck-passing game to shift responsibilities.”
More than 120 nations called for an investigation into the origins of the virus at the World Health Assembly in May. China has insisted that WHO lead the investigation and that it wait until the pandemic is brought under control.
Separately on Thursday, WHO acknowledged the possibility that the coronavirus might be spread in the air under certain conditions — after more than 200 scientists urged the agency to do so.

In an open letter published this week in a journal, two scientists from Australia and the U.S. wrote that studies have shown “beyond any reasonable doubt that viruses are released during exhalation, talking and coughing in microdroplets small enough to remain aloft in the air.”
The researchers, along with more than 200 others, appealed for national and international authorities, including WHO, to adopt more stringent protective measures.
The health body has long dismissed the possibility that the coronavirus is spread in the air except for certain risky medical procedures, such as when patients are first put on breathing machines.
In a change to its previous thinking, WHO said on Thursday that studies evaluating COVID-19 outbreaks in restaurants, choir practices and fitness classes suggested the virus might have been spread in the air.
Meanwhile, Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the U.S., said on Friday the coronavirus is likely spreading through the air to some degree.
“Still some question about aerosol but likely some degree of aerosol,” Fauci said by video during a panel session at a COVID-19 conference organized by the International AIDS Society.
What’s happening with coronavirus in Canada
As of 5 p.m. ET on Friday, Canada had 107,023 confirmed and presumptive coronavirus cases. Provinces and territories listed 70,818 of those as recovered or resolved. A CBC News tally of deaths based on provincial reports, regional health information and CBC’s reporting stood at 8,793.
Newfoundland and Labrador has reported its first new case of COVID-19 in six weeks. The patient is a man in his 50s who had recently returned from the United States, according to the provincial health department.
The department says the man, who lives in the Eastern Health region, is self-isolating and did not travel through other Atlantic provinces.
Meanwhile, Nova Scotia has extended its state of emergency for another two weeks. Emergency measures are now in place until July 26.
The extension was announced as the province reported no new cases of COVID-19 and one more recovery — leaving only three active cases.
Some public health and infectious disease experts are pressing for governments in Canada to shift to minimizing, not eradicating, COVID-19 while allowing society to resume functioning.
The open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and all premiers, dated July 6, says aiming to prevent or contain every case is not sustainable at this stage in the pandemic.

“We need to accept that COVID-19 will be with us for some time and to find ways to deal with it,” the 18 experts wrote.
The aim of lockdowns and physical distancing was to flatten the epidemic curve so that health-care systems wouldn’t be overwhelmed with too many cases at once, Neil Rau, an infectious disease physician and medical microbiologist at the University of Toronto said. Stamping out the virus is a different goalpost.
Here’s what’s happening around the world
Florida confirmed its place as an emerging epicentre of the pandemic in the United States on Friday by reporting its second-sharpest daily rise in cases, while Walt Disney Co. prepared to reopen its flagship theme park in Orlando to the chagrin of some employees.
Florida recorded 11,433 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the state health department said, more evidence that the virus is still spreading largely unchecked throughout parts of the country.
The state experienced the surge after initially avoiding the worst of the outbreak that hit New York and other northeastern U.S. states. Friday’s total was just short of the state’s record high for new cases, set last Saturday.
The Walt Disney World theme park in Orlando will open to a limited number of guests on Saturday. To lower the risks, visitors and employees will have to wear masks and undergo temperature checks, and the resort will not hold parades, fireworks displays and other activities that draw crowds.
Around 19,000 people, including workers, signed a petition asking Disney to delay the reopening and the actors’ union that represents 750 Walt Disney World performers has filed a grievance alleging retaliation against its members over the union’s demand that they be tested for the coronavirus.

Texas is marking its deadliest week of the pandemic, reporting on Thursday a record daily death toll of more than 100, a new high for hospitalizations for the 10th consecutive day, and a nearly 16 per cent positive test rate, its highest yet.
In Arizona, hospitals were at nearly 90 per cent capacity, with a record 3,437 patients hospitalized as of Wednesday, and a record number of those, 575, on ventilators, health officials said. Earlier in the week, a record high number of 871 patients filled intensive care beds.
Meanwhile, officials in Mississippi say the state’s five largest hospitals had no ICU beds available for patients by midweek because of a surge in cases. Four more hospitals had five per cent or less of ICU beds open.

Quarantine measures for those travelling to the United Kingdom from around 70 countries and overseas territories, including France and Italy, no longer apply from Friday in a boost to the ailing aviation and travel industries hit by COVID-19.
Those arriving from higher-risk countries will still have to self-quarantine for 14 days, but many popular destinations are now exempt, meaning millions of Britons are able to take summer holidays without having to stay at home when they return.
The WHO emergencies chief said the agency believes an unexplained pneumonia outbreak in Kazakhstan is likely due to the coronavirus.
Dr. Michael Ryan says Kazakh authorities have reported more than 10,000 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last week and just under 50,000 cases and 264 deaths as of Tuesday.
“We’re looking at the actual testing and the quality of testing to make sure that there haven’t been false negative tests for some of those other pneumonias that are provisionally tested negative,” Ryan said. He added that many pneumonia cases were likely to be COVID-19 and “just have not been diagnosed correctly.”
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, said on Friday he may fire his cabinet if a second, two-week lockdown fails to curb the coronavirus outbreak in the country. Kazakhstan, which imposed a new lockdown on Sunday, has confirmed almost 55,000 COVID-19 infections, including 264 deaths.

India is reporting another record one-day spike in coronavirus cases, prompting some states to reimpose lockdowns in high-risk areas.
The 26,506 cases reported Friday bring India’s total to 793,802. The Health Ministry also reported another 475 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking total fatalities up to 21,604.
The ministry said the recovery rate was continuing to improve at more than 60 per cent.

The eastern state of Bihar reimposed a full lockdown in the state capital Patna and four other districts for a week beginning Friday to curb a surge in cases.
India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh, with nearly 230 million people, announced a weekend lockdown beginning Friday night.
Hong Kong’s Education Bureau on Friday announced the suspension of all schools from Monday after a spike in locally transmitted coronavirus cases that has fuelled fears of a renewed community spread in the city.
Schools in the Asian financial hub have been mostly shut since February, with many having switched to online learning and lessons by conference call. Many international schools are already on summer break.
The city reported 42 new cases on Thursday, of which 34 were locally transmitted, marking the second consecutive day of rising local infections.
