Can we talk about how talented the the last of us concept artists are? Not only does it paint a picture for us but it translates to their emotions & personality’s through there facial expressions.
The first bottom picture reads ‘Dina starts to doubt if the bloodshed & distress are worth the outcome as she dresses Ellie’s wounds’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see the embarrassment & pain on Ellie’s face while being taken care of, while Dina concentrating on how to sew up her wounds is doubting if all this revenge is good for Ellie.
‘Ellie feels a deep love for her son, but her trauma threatens the safety of the tiny family. Below the concepts of Ellie carrying the baby while doing routine chores around the farm’
Tumblr media
Those one shows the love Ellie truly has for JJ & Dina, but her PTSD & trauma is so bad that she physically nor is mentally stable enough as much as she tries (also LOOK AT JJS LITTLE SHOES!!! So cute!!)
‘The prologue to the game gives us our first & only look at Joel’s daughter, Sarah. Although Sarah is much more innocent, it was important to establish her as a down-to-earth girl who shares many qualities with Ellie. Sarah’s look needed to feel authentic & clearly show her relationship with Joel, while at the same time establishing her as a distinct character with her own sense of style. Her facial features are based on the actress who played & voiced her, Hanna Hayes’
Tumblr media
I love that they really made Sarah her own concept art, yes she is important to show the relationship with Joel but then again putting her in a way that she IS her OWN character & not just a side character. & it really shows & connects to how Joel really finds & connects to Ellie seeing the light of Sarah he needed after all those years, something to fight for again, something to look forward to no matter how much Ellie hurt him, because deep down he saw her as a daughter when he denied his own feelings in chapter 1. Ellie knew she wasn’t his daughter, & made it clear in the second game. Showing how much her relationship changed with Joel going from. “I see you as my dad” to “ I am Not your daughter.”
Artists: Hyoung Taek Nam, John Sweeney (pic 1 & 2) , Alex Neonekis, John Sweeney (pic 3), & I can’t find the artist for Sarah’s concept art
Anyway, I’m gonna not go anonymous anymore! But I’ll add my emoji just in case - 🕸️
This is such a beautiful ask. What always got me about the concept art was how fitting it was to the final results of the game. When you think about it, the concept art was created long before the game even started developing. There were just some ideas and concepts (hence the art), but no scrip (at least not the whole thing, maybe like scraps), and yet when we look back at most of these arts, we can see how close they are to the characters we learned to love. This is what I call a precise job. You can see the game was done with love in the heart.
The scene where Dina is taking care of Ellie is so well done. Be it on the concept art or on the screen, There's so much pain in Ellie in that scene; you wouldn't even have to see that she's all shaken, covered in blood, and crying. All you can do is close your eyes and listen to her voice when she speaks to Dina. Chills.
What I always found very interesting about Sarah, though, was why they chose to make her blond. This makes me even more curious about Joel's ex-wife because, this way, Sarah looks more like Tommy's daughter than Joel's (not suggesting that's true, lol). Looking at the concept art, there are versions of Sarah with darker hair. I wonder why they decided to make her blond all of a sudden. As if it had a reason and they were planning to show us a little of Joel's (blond) ex-wife in Part 3? Hm, who knows?

have u ever consider drawing cat?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
many times! could never really get around to it tho so thanks for the excuse!
i like to think of cat as a very free spirit. based on what little we get of her, she seems very communicative, proud, unashamed of herself nor her relationship with ellie to the point of telling her mom openly. in my mind, they kinda snowballed into a rocker/punk vibe. a smooth talker, major extrovert, a very extreme opposite to ellie; it's probably what drew them together.
lots of people don't know that cat's design as we see it in the photo was actually based on/inspired by some old vis dev concepts for dina by concept artist hyoung taek nam, where she was originally asian, which is a fun fact i like to tote around. i dig the choppy hair and adapted it for my own design; to me that's quintessential cat!
people tend to make cat a bitch or someone who uncomfortably pushes ellie's boundaries, and i get that they're trying to come up with a reason why they would break up but it doesn't seem fair at all. the one time they discuss her, ellie doesn't seem angry or standoffish about cat at all, just kinda views it as done business. you know ellie, if she didn't like someone, she'd trash on them big time.
i think dina not liking was only a mere indication that she's been jealous of her while they were dating, not that cat sucks! her reactions to dina being standoffish and flaking on ellie were honestly understandable.
another depiction of her is the victim in their relationship, the scorned ex-girlfriend who took a backseat to ellie and dina's friendship, which i'm not fond of either. lol i know ellie's a fuck-up but i don't think she's that much of a fuck-up. i like to think they really were into each other because they gave each other what they other was lacking. granted, i do think ellie couldn't manage the visibility of her attraction to dina in a way that cat couldn't see and it caused a drift but i think it was an amicable, if awkward, breakup. it was baby's first steady relationship, they're not quite meant to last.
also, ummmm, apparently cat was supposed to be at the dance scene and have a "sassy" convo with ellie and i wish it was in the game, i wanna see sassy ex behavoirrrrr.

The art piece that is illustrated above is concept art from none other than the popular video game The Last of Us released in 2013 by NaughtyDog. The story follows a man and his surrogate daughter across the United States after a fungal infection spreads across the world. It has the obvious post apocalyptic vibe and run down and abandoned buildings. This piece is created by a group of concept artists including Hyoung Taek Nam and John Sweeney and many more to whom I am inspired and admire a lot. Although the piece itself looks like a photo, it is a hyperrealistic digital design that balances colours, textures and hues to the scene. They illustrate the beauty within nature and the loss of humanity of that world, as well as just how quick nature is to reclaim its environment.
The artist uses both space and proportion to emphasize and to frame the sunset and bridge in the background as it is an objective in the game. The player must get to that objective, and in a video game world, artists must be able to create an environment that could subconsciously lead the player towards it. The buildings on either side point towards the bridge, almost like an arrow, and even with dead foliage and remnants scattered in the way, we can still make up a path that leads towards the focal point of the work.
I find the work relaxing, as if I can almost imagine and hear the sounds of nature around me. I find that this piece portrays the immense beauty of our world and how strongly nature wishes to thrive. It makes me feel almost sad as life will still go on even after our extinction, and how human life is so small in comparison to earth's will to live. We leave behind our own architecture, which is art within itself as well, which comforts me to know a piece of us is left behind even if humanity is no longer there.

Visual aid post (part 1)
Tumblr media
I thought I might as well post a couple of pictures that will help my readers visualize some details, as well as enemy design.
WARNING: If you are easily grossed out, this might not be for you. But if you are okay with zombie-like imagery, you should be ok.
Enemy design under the cut. It was borrowed from the game 'The last of us', so if you have played it, you already know what to expect.
(All images belong to Hyoung Taek Nam, senior concept artist at Naughty Dog studios).
Ferals
First stage of infection
Can be mistaken for a normal person from a distance
Fast, aggressive, normal range of sight and hearing
Easiest to kill.
Tumblr media
Lurkers
Second stage of the infection
Hardened fungal plates over head
Blind, but extremely good hearing
They use sound to orient themselves in the surroundings
Can enter dormant state during which they are undetectable
Much harder to kill
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tanks
Final stage of the infection
Rare, because Cordyceps ends up killing most of the hosts over time, and only limited number of them survive to the tank stage
Fungal plates all over the body give them very high defense
Very strong, capable of tearing people apart with bare hands
Initially slow, but once they start running it's impossible to stop them
VERY hard to injure and even harder to kill

Bit of Ellie Williams for the soul
I did this in the style of Hyoung Taek Nam, the character concept artist for The Last of Us.
This was my first proper shot at rendering she she's a little janky but I'm really proud of how far I've come over the last year (just over) of being a serious artist. Whilst I usually struggle with digital because there is a sense of everything produced must be perfection, I really enjoyed the process of this work.
This was also done for my graphic design class so I had no choice but to enjoy it LMAO /hj
