I love ep 35 of steeplechase so much! Beef with his beautiful speech about how he wouldn’t hesitate to protect someone. “I would do it again in less than a heartbeat. My impulse will ALWAYS be to take the hit.” Emerich natch being awkward and fumbling but genuine. Because he literally does have so much empathy, especially for non (traditionally) living things. and then Montrose is just like. Oh no. Oh I am not made for this. In the best version of reality we would get a Flash storyline wherein the Justice League, the Titans, Young Justice and every other superhero is mind controlled except for the speedsters. With the entire might of DC greatest hunting them down the speedsters have a dumb idea. A very very dumb idea.

See, speedsters are able to control what age they are and, while only Bart and Jay have ever seriously messed around with that ability, they need a wildcard move that won't be predictable.

What would a bunch of mind controlled superheroes not expect? What would immediately mark them as not a threat and allow them to sneak around in plain sight?

They disguise themselves as middle schoolers.

Jay and Barry get lucky. No one knew them as children and they aren't really recognizable as children so they get away with being 12.

Wally, Bart and Ace not so much. Half of the superhero community knew these three as children so they are forced to go even younger to be unrecognizable. All three settle on 6 because they refuse to compromise their ability to run.

The plan is to sneak into a class trip touring the Hall of Justice and then sneak away from the group to 'go to the bathroom'. The bathrooms are right above the Halls boiler room so then all they would have to do is vibrate through the floor and bam! They're through security undetected and have access to Hall.

What they don't take into consideration is that A) while Wally, Bart and Ace are used to being on high stakes missions as a child, Jay and Barry are not, Barry's on the verge of an anxiety attack and Jay CAN'T LIE B) as children none of them had the same control over their speed or their focus, which becomes very apparent when all five of them get so wrapped up in a pokemon battle that they don't notice Wonder Woman taking over the tour and, most importantly, C) Wally couldn't vibrate through objects without blowing them up until he was an adult.

They relearn that last one the hard way when the bathroom floor explodes and the Hall immediately goes into lock down.

#we got a taste of reckless abandon problem child Jay Garrick when him and Wallt were deaged in the comics #and i love how Wally and Bart were both semi functional despite the age changes but Jay was a little gremlin child #anyway i wanna see more demon baby Jay but with all of them as kids too #lets see nervous anxiety child barry who REALLY WASN'T MADE FOR THIS and wants to go home #wally and bart being the EXACT SAME child (like seriously every single comic with these two emphasizes that bart was exactly like wally)#and when wally was deaged or when wally has flashbacks hes indistinguishable from Impulse #so i want these two being twin terrors #just bad ideas x2 #zero impulse control #bad jokes and quick tempers #then there's ace who was probably the most focused one as a kid?#ace and barry bring the AD and Jay Wally and Bart bring the HD #but yeah ace was a very zoned out hyper focused kid #so im just imagining bart and wally dragging him along with them #anyway #should i write this?#i don't have time #but i love it #dc #the flash #kid flash #wally west #impulse #ace west #bart allen #barry allen #jay garrick

Yeah about the lucifer part it kinda of weird not saying i want mc to be solution of everything but still,but I saw someone I don't remember where saying that maybe , the fact the is always the reason will feed his ego(mc telling him during asmo and mamon that he was the solution or something)and will be the reason why he's sin will overtake him,but we'll have to wait and see if this pattern will continue also the lack of romance is making the story feel like mc is just a spectator rather than a character like twisted wonderland mc also who is [redacted] ? Ps sorry for the bad English.

Actually, I do want MC to be the solution to everything. This is a dating sim, let the main characters be significant to the love interests >:((

Okay, no but in all seriousness. I get that they're all connected to Lucifer in some way--5 of them literally followed him to war while Satan was literally born out of his wrath. So I get that Lucifer would somehow have to be connected to whatever it is they're going through. I just feel it's especially frustrating this time around, because every single time Satan had some sort of conflict in the og game, it was Lucifer that either resolved it completely, or he was the first step to resolving it. MC literally did not even have to be there and things would have turned out the same

And while I was partially joking about wanting MC be the solution to every single problem these boys have, I do think that having MC be the one resolving the current conflicts would serve the narrative OF THIS DATING SIM better since it would allow us to better connect with the characters. Plus imo it would have more weight if MC's the one helping all of them since they already know the people they'll become and what kind of change they are capable of. ++ I already talked about this once, but Satan and MC are tied together by the circumstances of their existences which would technically allow for an even deeper connection between the two, and it would have been nice to see that come into play somehow..

Ooh, I haven't thought about that! Lucifer usually manages to be in control of things most of the time, including his pride seemingly, at least, but that might just be the catalyst for it all. Though to be fair I don't think the writers will end up giving him an actual reason for his sin taking over either..

And it really does! I'm not saying we need romance 24/7, and I get that with season 1 they might have wanted to go slow with it, since in a way we basically just met the cast (though it's still a little frustrating), but hardly any romance even in season 2? Let alone in the events?? Come on..

Speaking of romance though--THE PHONE CALLS!!! The one thing they got so incredibly right. I'm guessing most people aren't there yet, but the pattern seems to be that around halfway through they become more romantic, and they pulled it off so well (at least for the ones I've already read). I was literally giggling like a little kid experiencing their first crush while reading some of these and one made me cry

Also, [redacted] is the brother that's supposedly going to be next. I didn't write his name because I didn't want people to get spoiled by simply reading my tags

Blood Moon and Harvest Moon have an aversion to all drugs. Like Trash Can would ingest tons of drugs like a defense tactic against them after a bit and would practically drug them when they inevitably gave into their bloodlust and killed him again. Every time they’ve had even wine since then, they feel sick and may even vomit it out immediately.

They cautiously take a bolt from Eclipse, who has been buying them from Monty, not knowing it’s a weed bolt. They manage to keep it down, but the entire time they’re high, KC has to supervise them because they’re both having 1) a panic attack (Blood Moon) and 2) having a screaming weed-rage at Eclipse (Harvest Moon). They were sick for weeks after and KC has to keep them in Moon’s room so they’re constantly supervised while they’re sick.

In which I trip over 30 seconds'-worth of incidental instrumental music, fall very very far down a mudcat research hole, and emerge with a compiled playlist an hour and a half long of every song I can find using the same tune.

In my usual magpie-manner, I've been stricken with the urge to note down every identifiable bit of folksong scattered throughout the Sharpe series (thank you, John Tams, et al.), so during my most recent re-watch I kept notes as I watched- most I knew, the few others I could reverse search by phrases of lyrics, and the only real stumbling blocks were any un-named instrumental ones since I have a terrible ear for tunes I can't attach the mnemonic of lyrics to.

In Siege though, starting at about 29:15, there's a brief bit of plaintive fiddle I did recognise as being the tune used by Judy Collins and others for 'Farewell to Tarwathie'. Which led, when I came to transferring my notes to playlist-form, to searching up the name of the tune itself so I could find an instrumental rendition, with my first port-of-call being the ever-faithful mainlynorfolk index, which quoted A.L. Lloyd as calling the tune 'an old favourite, best known in connection with the song called 'Green Bushes'. Which, being Bert Lloyd, we take with a substantial grain of salt.

So off to the mainlynorfolk index entry for 'Green Bushes'; not a lot of additional info there, so thus-armed, over we go to the Fresno State Trad Ballad Index entries, and their cross-references and then...

From which, the chain looked something like this: Mainlynorfolk -> Trad Ballad Index -> Scots Language Centre -> Trad Tune Archive -> Mudcat forums(1)

And then, through a marvelous stroke of serendipity, and the sole reason you're not currently reading the dissertation-length essay I was writing in my head; I stumbled across this article which is the exact manifestation of that incipient train of thought/red-string corkboard:

So I could then simply get on with the playlist-making. Thank goodness for equally pedantic people in this world doing the hard work for me. (definitely do go read Kloss's article tho)

[(1) Which is fairly well what my usual oddly-specific folk playlist forays look like, only scanning for breadth rather than depth in their case. Mainlynorfolk is excellent for finding recordings of songs; the Trad Ballad Index for figuring links between songs/tunes themselves; and Mudcat, my beloved, for decades-old forum threads on particular themes and genres. Add to those the other *mumble*-dozen sites and books in my 'Folk Music Resources' bookmarks folder, such as the VWML Roud Index, and I can get real granular in my playlist-themes.]

(incidentally, 'Wild Rover' also scans near-perfectly to the tune and vice-versa 'Tarwathie''s lyrics to 'Wild Rover', though I don't think the tunes are actually that similar; I also keep slipping into 'Sweet Betsy From Pike/Vilikens and His Dinah' whilst humming it, though the metre there is entirely different; and i could halfway believe an evolutionary relation to the classic come-all-ye tune such as 'Blow-ye-winds-westerly/Fish in the Sea')

So anyway, the upshot of this is I now have two new playlists to show for it: the intended Sharpe's Soundtrack one [here] and the subsidiary hour-and-a-half 3-hours+ tune family compilation [here] ✨️
