Protex, The Green Lantern of Mars

Raised by B’enn B’Lanx--a White Martian miner who was falsely accused of starting the world-ending inferno ultimately revealed to have been started by T’omm J’onzz, better known now as Malefic--Protex inherited B’enn’s leadership of the Hyperclan, a White Martian political group begun in their native polar region, pushing to end the caste system mastermind by the Red Royal and enforced by the Green middle caste, specifically their Manhunters. All of this would be rendered a moot point as the Red Martians fled to Saturn’s moons and the Greens were rendered almost extinct, an ironic consequence of Malefic’s own self-loathing writ large across a canvas of psychic genocide.

Protex and the core members of the Hyperclan survived for years in a desolate sub-dimension akin to the Kryptonian Phantom Zone. On escaping, they took the presence of J’onn on Earth’s Justice League as an affront and made an inauspicious debut as rivals and then enemies of the League. Protex remained their leader until a usurper, Apex--in truth, Lex Luthor, following genetic modification to give himself Martian powers--defeated Protex in single combat and humiliated them.

Cast out and living as human firefighter Robert Gray, Protex found an unlikely mentor and friend in the Green Lantern Alan Scott. While no friend of Earth’s heroes at large and still believing in Old B’enn’s message of a post-caste, post-hierarchical society, Alan taught Protex to open their heart to the universe once again and found beneath decades of torment, war, and failure, the soul of a hero. Eventually, Protex inherited not only an Oan Power Ring, but the trust of J’onn, bring full circle the trust J’onn themself had once put in a kindly old miner who had befriend them and their sibling...

Dear Malacandran Matter,

At that fateful moment when Optimus tried to crash the Ark into Earth in 1984, Megatron fired upon him, throwing off his steering. The Ark careened into Mars instead, crashing into the deep Valles Marineris, with the Nemesis staying in orbit.

Millions of years later, the damaged Ark repaired both Autobots and Decepticons using ancient local technology: lunar rovers for Autobots, antigravity flying saucers for Decepticons. The Transformers were strangers in a strange land, seeing the planet covered with machinery from an odd planet named Earth, whose dominant species had gone extinct millions of years ago. But Mars was still inhabited. The Hyperclan of the polar regions were on the verge of defeating the Green Martians, led by a Martian named "J'onzz". The Decepticons and Hyperclan joined forces and Megatron himself intended to crash the Nemesis into the great Martian volcano, Olympus Mons. The eruption would destroy the Green Martians, who were weak to fire, and provide a source of energon to the Decepticons.

One Green Martian, D'kay D'razz, found herself enchanted with a mysterious power source from within Optimus Prime. Just as the Autobots were about to launch a final offensive to end the crisis of the crashing Nemesis, D'kay attacked Optimus Prime fatally, and took the Matrix for herself. As the Decepticons and Hyperclan were about to finish off the Autobots and Green Martians, she realized that her actions had threatened the Martian race. She teleported onto the Nemesis and defeated Megatron, steering the ship into the polar ice caps, destroying the Hyperclan.

J'onzz mourned the loss of his new friend Optimus Prime and the wayward D'razz, but he and the remaining Autobots hoped they could live together in harmony, in a Golden Red Age. Unfortunately, at that moment, Shockwave arrived on Mars to aid the Decepticons, declaring that the Autobots would soon be all dead.

These events are collected in the DC miniseries The Transformers, published in 1984.

thoughts on the Hyperclan since you mentioned that you'd use them in your Justice League film?

Awesome team that deserve to be reoccurring foes for the JL.

Only problem is they were pretty straightforward bad guys in terms of what they wanted, and I think they need to be differentiated more from the more popular world conquerors in order to stand out. Need to find some goal for them besides trying to conquer Earth, maybe they're after a way of resurrecting Mars and the Martians in a way that will cost human lives? Williamson wrote them well in his FS JL issues, I'd be interested to see what else he could do with them on a proper JL run in the modern day.

While J’onn tends towards a more structured, deterministic Manhunter form influenced by their role in the Green Caste as a peacekeeper and investigator, M’gann embraces the Hyperclan’s philosophy of the White Caste not as lowly laborers, but as infinitely capable jacks of all trades, fluid and beautiful in opposition to the strict rules and caste system upheld by the Greens but ultimately determined by the Yellow Religious Caste and the Saturnians (once the Red Ruling Caste or Crimson Kings, but since fled to a distant moon to escape Mars’ final fate)

Once the Hyperclan escaped to Earth, M’gann fully split ties with them and their new leader, Apex; a mutual enemy of M’gann and their partner, Lara.
