Kona Electric and MG ZS EV comparison: Price, Specs, Reviews & More
Tumblr media
As the automotive landscape evolves, electric vehicles (EVs) are leading the charge, and among them, the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV stand out as formidable contenders. In the quest for sustainability and efficiency, these affordable EVs cater to a burgeoning community of eco-conscious consumers, each with its unique flair and features.
Design: Aesthetics That Tell a Story
The Hyundai Kona Electric boasts a distinctive design with high-contrast fender cladding and modern SUV aesthetics. Its closed grille, Composite Light, and LED-equipped headlights contribute to a contemporary look, while air curtains enhance aerodynamics. In contrast, the MG ZS EV, though maintaining a familiar design, incorporates EV credentials with a closed-off grille and relocated charging port. Updated bumpers, sleek LED headlamps, and a refined rear design give it a futuristic, neo-retro appeal.
Battery & Range Comparison
The Kona Electric offers two battery options, with the upgraded version boasting a 64.8-kWh battery and a range of 452 km. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes just 41 minutes with DC charging. The MG ZS EV, with a larger 50.3-kWh battery, achieves a range of 461 km. Its 174.33 bhp motor provides a top speed of 180 kmph. The ZS EV aims to balance range and performance, showcasing improvements in power and acceleration.
Interiors: Kona Electric vs. MG ZS EV
The Kona Electric offers interior options in Black or a three-tone Blue and Grey color scheme, providing choices of textile or all-leather seats. Its centre console consolidates controls, and a 7-inch supervision cluster displays essential gauges. The MG ZS EV features a revamped interior with additions like a 360-degree camera, blind spot monitor, wireless charging, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Despite missing some distinctive features, it compensates with exceptional build quality.
Charging Time
Hyundai Kona Electric supports Level 2 and Level 3 charging, taking approximately 9 hours and 64 minutes, respectively. However, bidirectional charging is not supported. The MG ZS EV offers faster Level 2 charging (6 hours) and Level 3 charging (40 minutes). Notably, it supports bidirectional charging, enhancing versatility.
Pricing: Both Affordable
In terms of pricing, the Kona Electric starts at Rs. 23.84 lakhs, while the MG ZS EV is priced slightly lower at Rs. 22.98 lakhs, making both accessible options for the Indian market.
Verdict: Which One To Buy?
While the MG ZS EV comes at a marginally lower price, it excels in range, charging, top speed, and the inclusion of bidirectional charging. As a well-rounded city car with the ability to power external devices, the ZS EV emerges as a compelling choice in its category, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable urban mobility.

FIRST DRIVE: 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric. Bold is it still brilliant? | Electrifying
The Hyundai Kona is an Electrifying.com favourite, mainly because its great driving range and efficient use of energy make it a great option for anyone planning to go electric for the first time. However, it isn’t without its flaws. It’s not the most spacious car in its class, it’s slow to charge and the functional design doesn’t exactly turn heads. To address these weaknesses, the Kona has been on the receiving end of a full-on glow up, or to be more precise – and in the words of Hyundai’s Design Director, SangYup Lee – a scale up. We expect to see two models from launch, long range with a 65.4 kWh battery and a 160 kW motors giving a claimed official WLTP range of 306 miles, along with a standard range 48.4 kWh model with a 114 kW motor with a claimed range of 212 miles. Unlike its stablemate the Kia Niro, the Kona can charge at over 100kW, which means a 10-80% charge can be achieved in around 40 minutes. Hyundai reckons that a 15 minute charge on a 150kW charger will add 100 miles of range - which is speedy.
