DEFCON 28 Badge Challenge

Before getting into the badge challenge write-up, we would first like to take a moment to thank all those who helped make this possible. First and foremost, a big shout out to 1o57 for putting together these amazing puzzles every year, and the sacrifices required to make it happen. Also a big thanks to the DEFCON organizers as a whole, who allow people like us to engage in these puzzle-solving shenanigans, and giving 1o57 a place to create and foster the hacker mindset.

The DEFCON 28 Badge

The Council of 9, undaunted by the irregular startup routine of DEFCON Safe Mode, prepared to scuffle and rumpus against the bewildering puzzles of 1o57 once again. After purchasing our DC28 badges, the fun began.

As 1o57 puzzles go, you never have an official starting place. You have to find it. So as we found answers or interesting information, we would record it for possible future use, and move on to the next thing we could find. Eventually, the breadcrumbs resolve into a path to follow.

This years badge consisted of three physical items:

A traditional printed cassette tape insert booklet

An old school audio cassette tape

The Lanyard

Booklet

The cassette tape insert booklet had several codes printed across it.

First, looking at the track listing:

Taking the first letter of each song on the side A tracklist spells out “LOSTINTIME”. For the uninitiated, 1o57 is the longtime Defcon badge designer and puzzlemaster. These track names also contain hints for later - Keywords like Lissajous.

This string of text wasn’t nearly as simple to decipher. This skull artwork was a throwback to DC21, which had us scurrying to find notes and write-ups on the Badge puzzles from that year. Ultimately, however, we found the solution by taking the text string and pasting it into a 6x6 route transposition cipher, yielding:

We didn’t yet know what to do with this, so we put it aside for later.

The solution to this text really came from the fact that we were paying attention to 1o57 dropping random hints in various locations - not from anything in the booklet itself. 1o57 had played a video on his Twitch channel from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. Most notably, Buckaroo is famous for using the phrase: “No matter where you go there you are”

Using this as an OTP key...

Cassette Tape

With the booklet sorted, we turned our attention to the DC28 cassette tape. Upon listening to the tape, there are some immediate … features… that stick out.

Tones

One of the first things anyone listening to the tape will notice is the odd tones that sound at different times, and seem to repeat. These were halves of a DTMF (Dual-tone Multi-Frequency) tone, known better by many as “touchtones”, and appeared in two (2) groups of fourteen (14) tones that repeated three (3) times. By combining these single frequency pairs back together, we restored the dual frequencies and, by examining the peak frequency of the tones, we were able to identify the keypresses that generated the given tones. The flow of tones came out as:

We’re not done yet, though! Not yielding any immediate plaintext, we continued checking for a second-stage decipherment. As we’ve learned from other puzzles, any phone-related cipher should be checked for T9 coding, which turned out to be exactly what we have here.

Oscilloscope

It’s not just the obvious side of the audio that we need to examine - the audio on the cassettes had much more than meets the … ears. Based on some hints that 1o57 dropped, and our experience with past puzzles, we decided to examine the audio for any hidden waveforms or other hidden data. Using a software oscilloscope, we examined the tape audio and discovered plenty of hidden text, as well as Lissajous patterns (remember that word from the Tracklist? Ya, that was the hint to get us here). The patterns we saw included a spaceship, a heptagon, a butterfly, and some very interesting text. The text we needed was:

When we found this, though, the site was not yet active (since DEFCON hadn’t officially started). Oh well, better solve the Lanyard while we wait.

The Lanyard

This year’s lanyard proved to be quite tricky. We went through several iterations of attempts to make sense out of it. Pictured below is the lanyard with our attempts at dividing up and delineating each shape.

1o57 offered quite a few hints about the symbols on the lanyard - and with good reason. Finding the appropriate reading for the text was pretty difficult. Here are some of the most important hints that came out:

More hints will start flowing from the font of knowledge tomorrow after DEFCON officially starts....

These sorts of hints eventually point towards the Crackly font, hosted on emigre.com (https://www.emigre.com/PDF/Crackly.pdf). Using this font, we were able to extract the following values from the lanyard segments:

Note first those mad MSPaint skills. Note second that all of those numbers are below 26, we immediately changed them into letters, giving us:

Throwing this through a ROT, because you should always ROT everything, discovered that it was ROT-24’d. (Side note: Why ROT-24? Because ROT-24 is a negative ROT-28. Tricksy)

While not immediately obvious, one observant council member noted the presence of the C-O-M series of letters when reading in the vertical 4x4 pattern. Reading it in this way gave us what we were after:

This new page contained quite a bit of new content that we needed to sort through, and any answers were certainly not obvious.

The summation equation written at the bottom of the Goonies skull key implied that we need something that follows the pattern 1.1 + 2.2 + 3.3 + 4.4. The banner of the website implies that we need to look at the album “The Great 28” by Chuck Berry. This is further hinted at by the text “Record your answer~”, as in a record. We even think the tilde, from the latin for ‘title’ was probably part of the hint.

Upon looking at the Track list of “The Great 28” we saw that there is a track called Come On, which is right before a track called “Nadine (Is it You)”. This seems to link back to the text that we extract from the cipher text on the cassette tape insert “Come On Four Dot Four is right in front of you” Come On happens to be Section 4 track 4 of the album (4.4) and is “right in front of” (before) “Is it You”.

Going with that train of thought, and concatenating the titles of tracks 1.1, 2.2, 3.3, and 4.4:

However, we don’t know what to do with this yet. Note it and move on.

Last on this site, but certainly not least, is another URL. Hidden right in plain sight underneath the logo is a pointer to the URL “Base-28.com”.

Alright, time to move on.

The first thing to look at here is the ciphertext in the top center of the page. We have a few strings to play with from previous solves. With the earth, moon and sun being in a line on the page, we figured it was a good opportunity to try the key that we found previously (from the audio DTMF codes): SYZYGY. This ciphertext is Vigenere encoded with SYZYGY as the key, and decodes to Who are you going to call? Definitely sounds like Ghostbusters to us.

Also of note here, is that the image on the arcade cabinet was identified as being the Temple of Gozer - a Ghostbusters scene. This scene is actually Chapter 28 on the GhostBusters DVD, and is titled “Crossing Streams”. This reinforces the Ghostbusters clue that the vigenere text gives us, and will prove critical to the next step.

On either side of the website we see pictures of members of the band The Commodores. 64 of them, in fact. These two clues combined tell us that we need to look at the Ghostbusters Commodore 64 game. What specifically about it? We don’t know yet.

Pale Blue Dot

The Lissajous from the audio on the cassette tape pointed us to lostboy.net/PaleBlueDot. Upon accessing this page, we were greeted with… a wall of numbers. A giant freaking wall of numbers. Oh, and a joke.

How many Sagans does it take to change a lightbulb?

A quick google search will reveal the hilarious answer: “Billions and billions”

How it’s supposed to be solved

The numbers in the image are divided by the decimal, with a number of seemingly arbitrary length on the left, and eight (8) digits to the right of the decimal.

Left-Hand Numbers

Noticing that the numbers, with appending a few leading 0s, can be paired into values all less than 26.

Separating them out, and converting them via Letter-Numbers

Then, Vigenere decode using the key “billionsandbillions” (from the Sagan riddle) to get the plaintext:

These resulting words are the Game Franchise Username for the Ghostbusters c64 game, save bankroll amount. This consists of the Username (left side decoded) + 8 digit account number (right side number), with the decimal separating the two.

The numbers on the right of the decimal, being 8 digits, are the account numbers for the Ghostbusters game. These can be plugged into the game (via an emulator) to discover the corresponding amount of money that is ‘saved’.

Realizing that these account balances all have trailing ‘00’s, remove the 0’s and convert the remaining numbers into letters to reveal the next destination.

How we actually solved it (the narrative of pain)

One of our immediate observations was that the numbers always had eight digits on the right of the decimal. From the base-28.com site we knew about the c64 Ghostbusters game, and had the Crossing Streams chapter title as a potential hint that we needed to use clues across websites. In our reading about the c64 game, we learned that it was one of the first that allowed players to ‘save’ their game. Researching how this ‘save’ feature worked, we noted that it always used 8-digit account numbers, which curiously lined up with our 8-digit numbers to the right of the decimal. This felt like a crazy idea at the time, but we were frustrated enough to try it. Given the account numbers, we needed to find a way to reverse out the Names and Balances that would give those account numbers.

Rather than digging into the algorithm, like we should have done, we discovered a Chrome extension that generated Ghostbusters accounts.

We tempted fate and downloaded the extension, only to rip out the code in order to reverse the algorithm. With that, we wrote the below brute forcer which, after inputting a Name, would try all possible account balances and then check if any of the resulting account numbers matched any of the account numbers from the image.

We immediately set out trying names that came from 1o57’s Twitch streams or other areas of the puzzle so far - and we found a few that worked:

But note that we said ‘a few’. We couldn’t find hits for every account balance. Fortunately, these were enough to assure us that we weren’t crazy, and we began attempting to interpret our output. While working through this, we realized that we didn’t even need the names. Using the information from the aforementioned YouTube video, we learned how to derive the information we needed. Take the account number for 1o57 which is 27710104. Reverse the number by pairs to get 04017127. Then convert from octal to hex, you get 101E57. The middle byte, 1E, is the hash of the name. The account balance is the first and third byte, so 1057. We filled in the remaining few accounts to come up with a full dataset. As it turns out, the whole page could have been solved like this on a calculator.

Examining the resulting balances, and knowing that the game’s algorithm divided the balance by 100, we dropped the trailing ‘00’ and then converted the remaining numbers into letters, revealing the string mysterysciencetheater. After trying this on a few of the known sites with no luck, we discovered that this was pointing us to mysteryscience.theater The PaleBlueDot in the middle of the numbers was also a hint to look for a domain.

While we had discovered some new information, it was not a complete solution. We still hadn’t used the left-hand side numbers from the PBD image, so we now shifted our focus to those numbers. After realizing that the numbers seemed to be relatively low when split into their component digits, we tried Letter-Number conversion again. We then Vigenere’d that output with the riddle answer ‘billionsandbillions’, and came up with a list of delicious food from the Ghostbusters movie. As it turns out, these were the names we were supposed to use to get the balances via a Ghostbusters c64 emulator. oops.

This page was kind of interesting in that there wasn’t really much to do with it… at least not immediately. From time to time, 1o57 will time-gate an area of his puzzles, and this is exactly what we ran into here. So, fast forwarding something like 24 hours, let’s begin examining the final puzzle-filled state of the page.

The top of the page now contained ciphertext. After a few attempts at deciphering it, we tried one of our old unused pieces of data (the concatenated list of Chuck Berry song titles) as a key and were greeted with a successful decipherment:

Navigating to http://lostboy.net/HHH, we were greeted with two more youtube videos. The first one was titled “Close but no Cigar”. Immediately realizing that this meant we hadn’t interpreted the clue correctly, we Nope’d right the heck out of there. Luckily, we also knew what HHH was referencing from watching 1o57’s Twitch stream on 8/7. so we wasted no time in discovering the correct endpoint.

Here we go, a YouTube video and some encoded text. This feels right. The video was of RayParker Jr. performing the GhostBusters theme song, and below it was the text “What a singer! LostboY.net/PaleBlueDot/?” Also on the page was the text “F1LZuQ9E4JQ”.

The F1… text was another YouTube video; Chuck Berry and Tina Turner performing Rock n Roll Music. In an interesting twist, we discovered that by sorting the video comments by Newest first, there was a comment from NEW SOUND AGENCY with the text “b3MgdG8gQ2Fy”.

Also, if we look at the NEW SOUND AGENCY channel on YouTube, it has just one video of 1o57 playing around with a MiniMoog. Yep, this is a clue. This text of the comment base64 decodes to “os to Car”....hmmm.. That seems to fit with the other ciphertext we’ve found so far.

As for the URL, the team immediately recalled that Ray Parker Jr. may have, probably, almost certainly, likely, stolen the Ghost Busters theme music from Huey Lewis and the News’ “I Want A New Drug”. The next URL, then, was pretty simple to guess:

Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write? i’ve read basically my whole life and fanfiction led me to writing. there wasn’t a specific story or author though; just the realization that i could also put my own twist on characters/fandoms i enjoyed. i also have an amazing best friend who supported my passion when it first began, so she’s definitely a huge part of why i continued to write.

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author? read. a lot. write, even when you don’t want to or think it sucks. as with any kind of art, experience and practice is the only way you’ll get better. be open to constructive-criticism but don’t let the “rules” overwhelm or suffocate your passion. most importantly: write what you like! what you want to read! have fun with it!

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go? oh jeez, it’s a mixture of both? i usually start with a scene in my head that makes me go “i wanna write that” but then i have to find a way to get to the scene? so i either wing it, if the idea was clear enough, or i scribble down an outline to get my base ideas down but leave wiggle room for inspiration during the writing process.

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do? i’m sure i have, back when i first started; i likely commented back that if it wasn’t their preference, there was no need to read the fic or leave a rude comment behind.

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..) a c t i o n, definitely. i also get kind of stuck on kisses? idk how much detail to put into them lol

24. What story(s) are you working on now? even tho i’m slow af about it i’m currently working on 2 actively:

a makoharu gift exchange fic!

a klance fic with which i’m taking my first steps into writing for VLD (i’m jumping on the bandwagon where they’re somehow physically stuck together (via alien handcuffs in mine) for a time & grow closer as a result)

i’m always sorta-kinda working on my various iwaoi fics; the nipple-piercing fic is near completion & i’ve recently remembered my single dads au that i hope to work more on soon ^^

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)? pffftt all the time. the ideas are definitely more forthcoming than the Muse & motivation like to be.

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself? nope. i tried that for a while but it didn’t stick.

A: Your current OTP. Jace/Alec from Shadowhunters. Apparently this makes me problematic but I don't care

B: A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind. This is hard because if I started watching a show because of someone they typically told me their ship ahead of time and then I was looking for it. So I guess the closest I can come up with is that I lowkey ship Sephiroth/Genesis from Final Fantasy because of @nyx4 but I've never played the game

C: A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can't. Arthur/Merlin from Merlin. Everyone always went so over the top with Merthur, and I shipped it for a few seconds but I never really liked Arthur so it was hard to care.

D: What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom? An X-Files fanfic uploaded to Gossamer titled, embarrassingly enough, "My Immortal" to which I attached my real name. I was 14 or 15 and therefore very stupid. (I have since had this and another removed from the site, thankfully). I also handed this fic into my English teacher to read. Even more embarrassing. The plot? Mulder loved Scully but he wanted to make sure that she loved him so he tried to make her jealous and when she did act jealous he was like "lol jk" and then I went into a lot of detail on a kiss they shared (THAT MY ENGLISH TEACHER READ) and then they got engaged and then they both got shot outside of Mulder's apartment for WHATEVER REASON and died. Hence "My Immortal", because they'll be together in death.

E: Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what? Yes, and I shall find the post I made on Livejournal so I can bring you direct to the source. It was for Legend of the Seeker, and I got the idea to Photoshop a fake Facebook post based on an episode (I forgot where I got the idea, if I saw it in another fandom or what). F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it? The X-Files. I got into it when I was around 11 or 12 and was a pretty active member until I was 17 or 18. Which doesn't seem very long, but to be heavily into it, I feel it was. And then I came back around to it when the revival was announced, so it's been an on and off relationship.

There was so many posts where people were so aggressive about unfollowing and hating people who didn't like Sansa and it got so irritating I started to dislike Sansa by association. So congrats, Tumblr, you played yourself. Also, this site turned me off The Musketeers around season 3. So much Aramis hate, kind of soured me since I watched the show for Santiago Cabrera. And then that association soured me on Santiago, so. Thanks.

It was all over the place when it was first airing and people either loved it or thought it was ridiculous so I started watching it finally and it was ridiculously great. How I entered/learned about the said game/show/movie/etc of that fandom

I started watching Danny Phantom around 12 as well!! I saw it advertised all over YTV, and it gave Saturday mornings on what use to be called the Vortex?? Which was like a segment, for lack of a better word, in which all the Saturday morning cartoons gave. Anyway, I always watched the Vortex so I managed to catch the premiere and I LOVED it

Anyway I ended up finding the fanfiction archive for it and the Danny Phantom ff archive is constantly BOUNCING or as kids say nowadays, lit?? And there were SO MANY GOOD WRITERS!!! So I mostly partook in that, and read some of the message boards on YTV’s website too. Then the show ended and I was dissatisfied with the mess that was Phantom Planet (as is the whole Fandom) and ironically enough, I can’t remember how (probably via dA. I even had a shitty insert yourself half-ghost OC man I was in DEEP and have not yet emmerged) I stumbled upon the HUGE phandom presence on ye old tumblr trash site and ended up joining BECAUSE of the Phandom and I have not left since they’re just so great and the parts of the Phandom I follow are such a good community and the ANGST and the FANART and the Discourse and the trash ships (DannyxPink Pants anyone?) and the “it’s not gay if he’s dead” and fucking WES WESTON that trash cryptid child like

1. What Are the Differences Between a Pop-Up, an Interstitial and a Banner Ad?

First things first. Let’s start with the banner ad. It is a form of display advertising because of the visual nature of the banner.

Usually, it doesn’t interrupt the user, but if it is very big and flashy, it might cause him to lose focus on the content.

Pop-ups, on the other hand, appear over the content but do not interrupt the user immediately. Look at the example in the next picture.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a pop-up refers to something that appears suddenly or unexpectedly. A pop-up ad is another form of online advertising and it is designed to attract customers and generate traffic.

Interstitials have the same purpose as the previous ads, to promote and advertise. But, unlike the pop-up and banner, the interstitial interrupts the user and hampers the normal flow of content.

One of the biggest sites on the web has been using these types of interstitials for quite a while now.

I bet you all know Forbes, right? Well, the website has an interstitial that opens every time you click on a link that points you to its content.

Whenever you click on a link that redirects you to Forbes, there is this page waiting for you before you see the content you want.

They use it to push content and advertise products or services to the forefront of a user’s experience. In term of SEO, it increases the CTR and the time on site. They are really annoying and not at all user-friendly.

There are other types of intrusive advertisements that manipulate the user.

If you take a look at the next screenshot, the whole background is a full page background ad.

There is a high chance for the user to mistakenly click on it and be whisked off the website and the original content to the advertiser’s site. It is annoying, for sure. These types of ads turn out to be extremely aggressive.

2. Google Is Looking for a Positive User Experience

It all started in 2012, when Google began to devalue websites with too much ad space above the “fold”.

Then, in 2015, Google announced it would be downgrading sites that show annoying full-page ads prompting users to install mobile apps. The Google’s App Interstitial Giant Ad Penalty went live in November 2015.

Until now, Google has continued to keep an eye on the different intrusive advertising formats on the web that have a negative impact on the overall experience on the website.

January 19, 2017 is an important date to remember. Starting on that day, Google has penalized websites that have content which is not accessible to the user in the transition from Google mobile search results. This update is meant to help users easily access content on mobile.

Google gives a statement on the Webmaster Central Blog regarding this update:

As we said, this new signal is just one of hundreds of signals that are used in ranking and the intent of the search query is still a very strong signal, so a page may still rank highly if it has great, relevant content.

Intrusive mobile interstitials are frowned upon by Google. After this update, a diagram was posted on the blog pointing out to those on the blacklist to be targeted in the future.

Google also provided a few examples of interstitials that would not be affected by the new signal, if they are used responsibly and don’t make content less accessible.

In the Rater Guidelines, Google has an entire subchapter about Distracting/ Disruptive/ Misleading Titles, Ads, and Supplementary Content.

Google penalizes websites that do not match users’ expectations after they click on a link, only to find something else on that page.

There are 2 situations when ads are considered disruptive:

1. Ads that actively float over the main content as you scroll down the page and which are difficult to close. It can be very hard to use the main content when it is actively covered by moving, difficult to close ads and these are considered to be disruptive. – Google

2. An interstitial page which redirects the user away from the main content without offering a path back to the main content is considered to be disruptive. – Google

Besides those, there are many other reasons why ads are distracting and misleading and you can learn more in the Rater Guidelines.

As mentioned on the Google Webmaster Central Blog, at first Google analyzed interstitials that ask users to instal an app on smartphones. As they started to dig deeper into this issue, they thought that it was mandatory to explore the interstitials in general.

Now, the check for app install interstitials is incorporated into the new signal in Search.

Just a few weeks ago Google took the first decisive step. It has started sending emails to a thousand online publishers warning them that they are showing “highly annoying, misleading or harmful” ads, according to a source from Ad Age.

Google is part of the Justice League-type group within the Coalition for Better Ads born with the purpose of offering and improving consumer’s experience with online advertising.

In March, the coalition asked 25,000 people in the U.S. and Europe to rate 104 different ad experiences on desktop and mobile. A shockingly high percentage (97%) of desktop violations included popup ads. Just over a half (54%) of mobile sites were flagged for the same thing. According to Google, 21% of mobile websites were in violation for having a high ad density, which means that more than 30% of a page comprises ads.

Since we were talking about Forbes, you should know that they are amongst other big publication to receive an email from Google as it violates the Better Ads Standard. Other big publications in the same situation include Betty Crocker, the New York Daily News, the Los Angeles Times, The Independent, TV Guide, the Chicago Tribune, LifeHacker, ZDNet, PCMag, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel, the Washington Times, Eurogamer and the Chicago Sun-Times.

Google argues that Chrome’s removal of bad ads will serve as a filter, not an “ad blocker.”

3. What Do Experts Say About the Interstitials Impact on SEO?

In 2016, there were a lot of unconfirmed updates that experts detected. Also, there’s a great debate around the dates when they happened.

Moz has recorded only 4 updates so far, as mentioned below:

In a research Glenn Gabe posted on G-Squared Interactive, there were listed 6 updates:

As you can see there are some differences between them.

Barry Schwartz identified other two updates, on June 14 and June 25. Lots of discussions happened on Twitter about these updates.

For the Google update he detected on 25, Google’s John Mueller gave a statement on Twitter:

But apparently, in the end, Google didn’t confirm the update. John Mu tweeted about it.

Experts disagree the statement. For example, RankRanger reported that sites ranking in positions 6-10 experienced SERP volatility. They showed that through one of their case studies.

This is a name that was given externally to a bunch of updates that we’ve been doing over time. So it’s not the case that there’s this one thing that is changing in search. We make changes in search all the time and we’re always working on trying to find ways to bring more relevant, more high-quality content to users, and that can be affecting a variety of websites.

On Twitter, there were people who experienced a huge fluctuation in the rankings. Others saw an increase and others saw their website drop from the first page, going from page 1 to page 3.

4. Are Interstitials Hurting Your SEO?

Lots of smoking guns so far, but do ads hurt your SEO?

Don’t hate me for the answer: it depends. It really depends on how your ad looks like. If it doesn’t have pages where content is covered entirely and it doesn’t whisk you over the main content to an advertiser’s website, then it most probably won’t hurt your SEO.

In other cases, you might experience some SERP fluctuations, some ranking instability and in the end, you’ll be wiped off the face of the search results.

How’s the weather forecast in your website’s zone?

After the updates Google made this year on the interstitial penalty, there were lots of webmasters who saw traffic drop and/or SERP fluctuations. Some of them say the interstitial penalty has got them.

For example, Vic Holtreman, founder of gamerant.com, says this happened to him because of full-page ad with “buy now” clickable images on each side of the content.

As you can see, the site’s ranking started to drop (as of February 19) after the Intrusive Interstitial Penalty from January 10 and other major updates from February went live.

Although the owner of the website is struggling on reducing ads, improving readability, content quality he didn’t manage to recover the high rankings.

Glenn Gabe’s statement on these type of ads is quite clear; the site might have received an Intrusive Interstitial Penalty:

I would categorize that as deceptive, which we know Google has called out in the Quality Rater Guidelines.

He adds: “those are extremely aggressive, annoying, and deceptive”. Everything Google disapproves at an ad.

There is a lot going on with this website. The link profile doesn’t look very natural, it had full-page ads for a while so the high drop it experienced could have happened because of multiple reasons. Those ads didn’t help at all, though.

Pinterest has another story. Some say it got hit, some just wanted the site to get hurt.

Sistrix posted an article saying the Pinterest probably got hit by the Intrusive Interstitial Penalty. They saw a drop in rankings.

40% of its smartphone Visibility in the UK, 35% in the USA, 34% in Germany and 34% in Spain. Today, the Visibility is still -16.5%, on average.

As you can see in the next screenshot, it is a notable drop.

After a quick review in the cognitiveSEO Explorer, we could see they had a drop from 4.14 mil in January to 3,32 mil in April, losing over 1 mil in just a few months. Until now, they haven’t fully recovered.

At the moment we speak, Pinterest blocks content from non-users and the interstitials they use cover all the space on top of the main content, which Google counts as intrusive, because it has a negative effect on the user’s experience.

Yet, Glenn Gabe shared his findings and said that the Intrusive Interstitial Penalty has no impact. He made a list with domains that were using all kinds of ads that broke the Rater Guidelines and kept tracking them to see if they suffered any changes in the search engines rankings. Unfortunately, he saw that the update had little or no impact at all on those domains.

It seems that Google AdSense New Native Ads will harm your website. The ads blend into your content and Google has an algorithm that specifically penalized ads in your content.

The situation regarding intrusive ads is really serious. It doesn’t matter if there aren’t so many examples of websites that got penalized because of this. Google is rolling updates on a regular basis. It just a matter of time. It’s a “when” not an “if”.

5. Do Intrusive Ad Penalties Really Exist?

It is official, a website can be penalized for interstitial ads on mobile devices. The word got out at Search Marketing Expo in January and it’s been doing its job so far. No secret here!

There are other experts who say the Penalty is real. Google confirmed the mobile interstitial penalty did roll out so there isn’t much questioning.

With all the examples of penalized sites we shared with you, we can be sure it is real.

6. How Can You Prevent an Intrusive Ad Penalty?

Before responding to this question, you should know what kind of ads you can use. The accepted ads are those that don’t appear over the main content, blocking the user to access the information in an intrusive way and don’t send them to a totally different site. So there is a possibility to use ads not targeted by this penalty.

If you want to prevent the penalties, you can use some of the pop-ups, banners or interstitials mentioned below:

age verification blockers that protect a certain type of content, such as alcohol or adult content;

cookie usage that respects Google’s Guidelines (popups that ask for agreement);

any other type of legally required pop-up that uses a reasonable amount of screen space.

If you don’t want to be penalized you need to understand which ads are accepted, avoid the gray areas, using timed pop-ups that cover only a small space of your screen, and always offer a positive user experience.

Also, it would be good to run a Mobile Friendly Test in Google Search Console to check your site and see if your site doesn’t have any errors on mobile. Otherwise, you might lose traffic because of a bad mobile user experience and many other problems.

Google is aware of the fact that many websites are supported by ads, so you must rethink your content marketing and mobile marketing strategy and don’t rely entirely on ads.
