There is some spicy Chinese discourse about the OTW Election happening on social media right now
Note: This post contains some terms that readers might be unfamiliar with. I've attached ℹ️ links to those terms, which will direct readers to the relevant Wikipedia page.
A Chinese candidate, Tiffany G, is running for the 2022 OTW ℹ️ Board Election [election website] that is currently taking place.
The OTW, in case my followers are not aware, is the nonprofit organization that runs AO3 ℹ️, the world's largest fanfiction hosting web archive, as well as the world's 7th most popular entertainment website [source].
The AO3 website is banned in China, because it hosts content that violates China's censorship laws (see more details at the bottom of this post).
.
I wanted to see what Chinese twitter had to say about this Chinese board candidate, so I picked a few tweets at random to translate.
— loreki (@loreki1) August 12, 2022 [source]
Translation: It's a bit exasperating that this Tiffany G really thinks doing this to ao3 would be a good. But even if ao3 was the same as JìnJiāng, dà diē ("Big Brother") still wouldn't accept it. She is not in line with the global mindset; it wasn't enough for her to "castrate" (impose censorship) in China, she has to go abroad in the spirit of "castrating" other countries…… Respectfully, she should not placed in a position of power.
.
🤡这个Tiffany G是不是虾啊···除了虾谁会说AO3被封是因为儿童色情···甚至举报材料都是故意曲解AO3分级,AO3是儿童X情文学集中地的谎言。
— Wendy (@Wendy21694072) August 12, 2022 [source]
Translation: 🤡This Tiffany G is a "prawn" (bully/mean girl ETA: I've been informed that in this case "prawn" 虾 refers to a Xiao Zhan fan group who take credit for reporting AO3 to the Chinese authorities and getting it banned)...Who else but a prawn would claim that AO3 was blacklisted because of értóng sèqíng (CP ℹ️)...going so far as misrepresent the charges that were brought against AO3; it's a lie [to claim that] AO3 is a place full of CP.
.
Can ppl not wash down the AO3 Tiffany G thing with “oh you’re just xenophobic/racist” when tons of Chinese ppl from mainland China are telling y’all that this is a serious issue??? 有些老外对威胁他们创作自由的人完全没有戒备心,居然还帮人家说话… 我要吐了,你们是生活在真空里的吗
— Commander Goose | Levi’s Delivery Service (@CDR_Goose) August 12, 2022 [source]
Translation: There are some foreigners (Westerners) who are totally, dangerously oblivious to those who might threaten their freedom. I don't get how decent people would [defend Tiffany G]... I want to throw up, do y'all 'live in a cave' or what?
.
— BrokenMesa (@yawezh0902) August 12, 2022 [source]
Translation: Tiffany G says that she's been an AO3 user for 10 years, and that back then she messed up on her college entrance exam being on AO3. That's about how long I've been on AO3. Back in those days, (Chinese) fan communities could speak openly in the mainstream [without worrying about being investigated]. No need to go on a Western fansite like AO3.
Whereas now, regardless of whether you go to Bilibili (B站 ℹ️) or AcFun (A站 ℹ️), the ACG ℹ️ fan culture is the same: any content that government censors might target has been taken down on all [of the Chinese fansites]. You have no way of knowing when the authorities might come for someone.
It's reasonable for me to assume [Tiffany G] is lying, and that her story is fabricated. Smells a little fishy.
⚠️I had a really hard time with this particular tweet, so there's a good chance I mistranslated some things.
.
Translation: I discussed tiffany g with a friend. [My friend] made me realize that the purpose of [Tiffany G]'s proposals is to try bring AO3 into the mainstream. There's a whole pile of homogeneous apps/platforms in China and that's more than enough for me. Don't make me watch [AO3 turn into yet another mainstream platform] in my lifetime.
.
Additionally, one twitter account has been leaving a bunch of replies on various Tiffany G tweets [source], endorsing her candidacy with the same copy-pasted comment:
我是Tiffany G的朋友,我认识Tiffany G很多年,Tiffany G非常有理想正气,我看不惯对Tiffany G泼脏水的人,特意声援支持Tiffany G,ao3不是法外之地,讲好中国好故事,弘扬中国正能量,人人有责,请大家支持Tiffany G
— 小潘女权日报 (@pyx18122270719) August 12, 2022 [source]
Translation: I am Tiffany G's friend. I've known Tiffany G many years. Tiffany G is very righteous and a paragon. I cannot bear to see Tiffany G attacked by mudslingers and I intend to support Tiffany G — ao3 is not above the law. [People should] say good things about China and spread Chinese positivity. It's everyone's responsibility. Please support Tiffany G
The account might be a sockpuppet ℹ️.
.
At the beginning of this post, I alluded to the fact that AO3 is banned in China. The ban took place in 2020 [source]. The site is blocked by China's internet firewall.
People in China can still access AO3 if they circumvent the firewall with a VPN. Ironically, China's decision to block AO3 actually resulted in AO3 gaining even more Chinese visitors and members, many of whom had never heard of the website until after it was banned.
In Tiffany G's candidate bio [link] on the OTW election website, she mentions that she works for the government.
I've seen a few Chinese fans on tumblr expressing concerns [source], [source], that she is a government plant, and that if elected, she would use her position on the board to access private user information and doxx AO3 users living in China, reporting their activities to the Chinese authorities.
ETA: I should clarify that these concerns are unfounded. OTW board members do not have access to users' private data. Even if this conspiracy theory were true, OTW board members don't have this kind of power.
I did not find anything explicitly pro-censorship in Tiffany G's campaign platform, however several of the statements she made in the OTW Election Q&A [source] sounded like pro-censorship "dog whistles" ℹ️ to me.
Notably, she implied that AO3 was hosting illegal content. She quickly backtracked when questioned by the interviewer, claiming that her words had been misinterpreted.
The twitter account I mentioned above that has been endorsing her candidacy also implied that AO3 hosts illegal content.
AO3 is an American website subject to American laws. All of the content hosted by AO3 is legal in the USA. Of course, Chinese laws are very different from American laws. A lot of the content on AO3 is in violation of China's very stringent censorship laws.

Index to English Doraemon Chapters
Tumblr media
As much as I still have many complaints about its general lack of accessibility, there is now an astonishingly large amount of official English Doraemon media compared to even just a decade ago. This is in large part due to the release of an English translation of the Doraemon manga on Kindle. However, English resources comprehensively cataloguing the Doraemon manga chapters and indicating how they align with the original Japanese volumes and anime adaptations are still pretty hard to come by.
As a result, I have decided to compile a spreadsheet of all the Doraemon manga stories that are available in English, arranged by publication order. For each story, I have indicated its corresponding volume number for both English releases and Japanese compilations, as well as any anime adaptations they've received.
By my count, 1328 stories from the Doraemon manga have been released in English, which confirms my suspicion that the Kindle translation is one of the most complete compilations of the series that exists. According to Yasuyuki Yokoyama, professor of education at the University of Toyama and founder of Doraemonology (ドラえもん学—yes, that's a thing!), there is a total of 1344 Fujio-authored Doraemon stories, so only 16 stories from the original manga remain officially untranslated into English. Even the, uh, racist chapter has an English release. I haven't yet gone to the trouble of looking into exactly which stories are missing, though I've noticed that they include all the chapters that feature the retconned character Gachako.
This spreadsheet would have been substantially more difficult to make without information already compiled by other fans on Japanese, English, and Chinese-language Doraemon fansites. Special thanks go to everyone who has contributed to these great resources.
Any spreadsheet of this size will probably contain some inevitable errors, so please let me know if you notice any!

I know a few people on here who are completely off Twitter but would probably like this, so:
A programmer on Twitter got ahold of CDs that had the complete data of hundreds and hundreds of anime/manga fansites (English and Spanish), and official websites for series/companies, from between the years of 1998 and 2000. They’ve been restoring the websites and uploading them to a server to be perused. There is A LOT and it is very highly nostalgic, some of them are websites I would obsessively look at as a child.
One of the restored websites is Anipike circa 2000, which was itself a gigantic collection of links to various fansites and official sites. (Fansites mainly in English, but there are also Spanish, Italian, Chinese and maybe some others)
The twitter threads:

The main wiki directory for the sites being restored:
https://wiki.asie.pl/doku.php?id=notes:archive:dokan_anime_urls
The restored Anipike (programmer says links are still actively being restored, so its incomplete):

Initial D - The First Stage to the Overall Magic of Anime and Manga
Tumblr media
Seeing this display at my local Kinokuniya Bookstore branch made my day and got me reminiscing.
In the early 2000s', I was still in my phase of consuming everything Dragon Ball. I followed Dragon Ball GT at the time and knew it ended around 1997. Since simulcast streaming wasn't a thing, I had to rely on Chinese-dubbed VHS tapes to rent for all the episodes.
When watching one of the final episodes of Dragon Ball GT on a tape I got, there was a trailer (which was actually the opening) for another anime that played before the episode. It wasn't for a Shonen Jump series and I heard some really cool-sounding techno music.
youtube
That opening began my journey into a series that highlighted what anime and manga was really like outside of American marketing - Shuichi Shigeno's Initial D.
For those who don't know, Initial D is about a young man named Takumi Fujiwara who gets himself involved in the mountain street racing scene. He drives a car that isn't suitable for street racing, the Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno. The car lacks horsepower and speed, but Takumi is able to utilize amazing drift techniques to make up for it. While reluctant at first, Takumi gets pulled into a race when a street racing team called the Akagi Red Suns challenges Takumi's local team. Takumi beats one of the Red Suns' top members and he slowly becomes a legend as he encounters more street racers who want to challenge him. The manga lasted 49 volumes, had 6 anime seasons in 16 years, and a Hong Kong live-action movie adaptation of the manga (which I appreciated as a Cantonese speaker) was made in 2005. The series also inspired a good amount of people all over the world to get into Japanese cars due to every car featured in the series existing in real life. It did not hurt that fans loved the Eurobeat music that played in races throughout the anime.
As you can see from the photo I took, Kodansha USA decided to re-release the entire Initial D manga in a 2-in-1 omnibus print format for a newer generation as the original English manga release by Tokyopop in the mid-2000s' left a lot to be desired for translation reasons.
After watching the OP teaser in that one tape of a DBGT episode, I decided to watch all of the First Stage season of Initial D in Cantonese Chinese on VHS. I became hooked. I absolutely loved the music. I appreciated how analytical some of the characters were. Even though I didn't understand a lot of the conversations being had due to my Cantonese not being good enough to talk about vehicle intricacies, I had the help of Initial D fansites to summarize things. I became obsessed when the manga was ongoing at the time to see who Takumi was facing. Fansites helped to bridge the gap.
Speaking of fan-related material, I learned about yaoi/boys' love through Initial D. I saw many fanfiction sites about the relationships between the major male characters. In a sense, I got to see why sports-like series appealed to female fans way before the current sports series boom we have now.
Initial D also helped me get close with my dad. He actually watched the anime with me. During the years when I was so depressed, my dad always spent time with me. We played a lot of basketball, talk sports, and watched Initial D together. It helped that he was into car culture, so he helped explain a few things to me about certain cars.
One more thing Initial D did was that it got me to go to my very first anime convention in 2003. It was the Big Apple Anime Fest and the Third Stage movie was screened. While I watched the Third Stage movie before, it wasn't dubbed in Cantonese. This time, I got to see the full film with English subtitles. I stayed for the 7:30pm screening and was excited with so many fans around me. The convention was also where I finally got to connect with a friend who lived in the same area as me. I still talk to and hang out with them today.
While Dragon Ball got me into anime in the first place, it was Initial D that got me to expand my worldview about anime and manga. The series gave me a glimpse of the other anime/manga communities out there. I got a first glimpse into series that weren't mainstream yet loved by passionate fans.
When both the Initial D manga and anime ended in the 2010s', my anime/manga interests were in a different place. But I still enjoyed Final Stage when it came out because I got to see Takumi grow immensely over time and the payoff was good. The final battle felt like two very similar individuals trying to impose their superiority over one another. It was a perfect way to end Takumi's story, given that almost all of his opponents were different from him.
I know Initial D isn't talked about as much as Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon in terms of impacting people's lives, but it has done wonders for me in genuinely seeing what the world of anime/manga fans was like outside of the usual fare. I know I'm not the only one.
So I want to say that if the super-mainstream anime and manga series aren't your thing, it's okay. There will always be something that will catch your eye and maybe change your perspective for the better. And maybe it will find you a community that you love being around and help you grow.
To quote one of the Initial D opening songs sung by the group, m.o.v.e, let's move into the brand new world and let's dive into the brand new trip.
For more perspective on Initial D's impact on its fans and car culture, this post from a car enthusiast is worth a read.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!! Episode 64 Sub Release
Torrent
Support us on ko-fi
Please make sure to read the FAQ if you have any questions.
Below are translation notes, so spoilers ahead.
----------------
不甲斐ない / fugainai "worthless”
I do want to emphasize this, because when Yuudias says that he lost his friends because he was ‘worthless’ - he fully means it. It doesn’t translate to not being “good enough” or “strong enough” or anything meant to imply he was lacking in a skill.
No, Yuudias full on called himself useless, pathetic, and worthless. That’s what this word means. He was truly blaming himself for everything.
親友 / shinyuu “best friend”
This is more akin to a level of best friend that’s above what is usual. Like if someone was your “friend-soulmate” in a sense.
The Legend of the Crane Wife / Tsuru no Onegaeshi
When Tremolo stumbles upon Phaser in the middle of the night working over a loom, this is a direct reference to a Japanese myth known as The Legend of the Crane Wife.
There are a lot of variations of this story, as usual, but I’ll recount the one I’m most familiar with:
A human man saves a crane from a trap. In gratitude, the crane turns into a beautiful woman and shows up at his doorstep to become his wife. The man, not knowing that this woman is the crane he saved, welcomes her into his home, but tells her that he is not wealthy, and that she would not live a lavish life with him. The woman says she has a way to make money and to not worry about it.
They live for several years together, and the crane wife makes many beautiful kimonos for the man to sell at the market, which in turn makes them wealthy. However, she looks thinner and more sickly every time she completes one. When she works, she always does it in the middle of the night, and tells the man to never look inside the room.
One day, the man is overcome by his curiosity, and looks into the room. Working over the loom is not a human woman, but a beautiful crane, who plucks her own feathers in order to weave the beautiful kimonos.
The crane, upon being discovered, tells the man that she cannot be with him any longer, and flies away to never come back.
As to what this means in terms of Tremolo and Phaser... your guess is as good as mine. I snuck some looks at Japanese forums and fansites, but it seems like everyone is also a little baffled as to what exactly it implies.
Personally, I think it was Phaser subconsciously trying to repress his space dragon blood for Tremolo’s sake, since he was afraid of aliens, but who knows. I still don’t understand why he made those scrolls.
Perhaps this is something they will go over in the future.
----------------
Happy end of the arc once again! What a wild ride this arc was - but I had a lot of fun watching it! There was maybe only a single episode that I felt a little ambivalent on, but not a single one I disliked at all.
Phaser and Tremolo were standout characters for me, although mainly moreso do to their heavy Chinese coding. I have a certain bone to pick with anime consistently making characters with Chinese undertones the villain, but regardless...
I’m interested in learning more about space dragons in the future, considering they created the universe (or were there when that happened), it seems like!
Anyway, thanks for sticking by for another arc! See you for the next one.

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I decided to become a Universe today after seeing Kino’s debut and discovering the rest of Pentagon! I really want to know them better, do you know any YouTubers who post about them? I’m okay with all types of video, I just want to know their personalities after going through their songs :) P.S. I think I’m Hongseok biased!
hi!!! no, i don't mind you asking at all, i love anyone who decides to become a uni! we can always use more and it's one of the best decisions ever ... imo pentagon is one of the best kpop groups ever. vocally, performance wise and discography wise they are truly the best of the best. nothing has made me happier than becoming a universe! (more under the cut)
pentagon is nine members in total, in age order: jinho (main vocal), hui (leader of the group, main vocal), hongseok (people like to say he is a lead vocal but imo he's a main vocal ... mariah carey i gotchu), shinwon (lead vocal), yeo one (lead vocal), yanan (lead vocal, chinese member), and the triplets/maknae line (born all within like a week of each other with like 3 days between each), yuto (main rapper, japanese member), kino (main dancer, center, vocal), and wooseok (main rapper). they are a largely self produced group, and all members have contributed to producing and writing their songs. mainly, it's hui, wooseok and kino. jinho used to be a vocal coach before he became a part of pentagon.
they are actively enlisting right now, so hui and hongseok are missing. jinho got discharged last november. yanan has been on multiple hiatuses due to his anxiety, so he is usually around mainly for comebacks. (he's missed a few tho, including naughty boy, humph! and dr. bebe)
so, i guess you already know kino. he's usually one of the few people get to know first. he's pentagon's center and main dancer for a good reason, and he's the performance leader of the group. he's choreographed for pentagon and he leads their dance rehearsals, too! here's his havana cover (demotape is my favorite fansite of his and maybe in general even), and here's yeo one (changgu) and him performing taemin's move, because it changed lives.
anyways, i don't really ... watch youtubers who post about kpop idols, not at all. so i can't be of help in that regard. i prefer to watch their actual content / interviews so that's what i can help with!
zip the record interview, esquire korea; this gives you a bit of an overview on where they're at most recently. it's a pretty good introduction and very self explanatory!
pentagon play superlatives; one of the first pentagon videos i've ever watched dated daisy era (so jinho is the only one missing here. hongseok is their designated english speaker so you will hear him a lot in american interviews! he became one of my first biases like that as well, he is a mood maker and easy to notice)
pentagon song association; another easy one!
pentagon try not to react to kpop songs; this one is pretty cute and so worth it ... (yanan is missing here because he was in china at the time)
singing in different languages (they did this twice, here's the first one with everyone but yanan)
their famous lovesick girls cover called lovesick boys. it has 9 million views.
if you really wanna get to know them tho ... watch their pentory! it's their behind the scenes content and it's a lot of fun! you don't have to start with the first (i didn't), you just pick and choose what you wanna see. one of my favorite ones is the do or not recording behind! and more recently their fanmeet behind. their feelin' like promo behind the scenes was also fun.
they also do their own variety content, called pentagon's variety lab. their youtube channel has a lot of content if you really wanna get into them, besides just their music videos! their dance practices are also fun. they had a little variety show called pentagon forest in 2020, here's the link to that. it's very cute and wholesome.
as for your needs as a newly minted hongseok bias, he has a cover series on youtube called HONG seasons. even during his enlistment, he's released songs here because we don't deserve him and he is the sweetest man on earth. head bitch in charge jinho, also known as kpop's first and only vocalist, has a cover series as well called Magazine Ho and releases covers at the end of every month. here, he monthly puts singers out of their jobs without a care in the world. we love that for him. here he is performing kino's original song gravity with him, and here he is performing bohemian rhapsody on his own, because why the fuck not.
so, there you go! i hope this helps as a bit of an introduction. i'm sure there's a lot more ground to cover but i hope this serves as a bit of a start. and i hope you'll enjoy being a universe. thank you so much for this ask! have a lovely day. 💕💓💌

A few weeks back in Chile fans were supper rude to Korean fans and even fansite masters, now we have fans of Jaehyun being super rude to East Asians fans who are standing outside the hotel like the Italians fans.
The racism is very much alive in these episodes, I guess they think they're better coz they bullied a fansite master or a East Asian fan when they're themselves stalking idols outside.
I don't know how many of you watched the vlives they did outside in America but u can easily see all Americans following 127 all the time.
Btw fansites have connections with the idols most times, especially the ones who have been there with them since day one. Most idol companies give them info as they're the paparazzi of Korean entertainment industry.
We have no Jaehyun pics from the fansites, coz they know when to post stuff. Taemin had a secret project in Japan and I still remember when his song/stuff released the taeminnie fansites posted the pics then of taemin going to Japan and returning a week after.
I hope ppl realise how racist they sound and how racist they really are for acting like this with East Asian fans
P.S. if I'm not wrong there is a sizeable Chinese population in Italy.

It's not like ncity isn't one scandal away from crumbling entirely, but hearing Yangyang talk about future plans (most likely an album) and still refer to wayv as 7 is just...so frustrating.
I know this whole thing has been talked to death, but. It's been what, a year, since the LC allegations dropped? And SM has said NOTHING. The only thing we got was LC posting an apology for his "irresponsible behavior" and saying he will "reflect". I understand SM has this ridiculous philosophy of 'apologize first explain later' that we've seen many times (ie. Taeyong and Chanyeol) but these are serious accusations that haven't been addressed.
I just cannot understand how they think this is going to go away without releasing a statement? His largest chinese fansites closed as soon as the news dropped. Does SM understand what kind of message that sends? And then some fans hire a "private investigator" and they find "proof" that the accusations didn't line up with LCs schedules, and THEN we find out their "proof" was made up and doesn't line up either. So we have nothing.
If SM brings him back without releasing a statement, I am dropping wayv entirely. I won't consume any content, listen to any of their music, or buy another album. I will ignore the end of the year group projects. I hate thinking this way bc Xiaojun is one of my ults, but I simply can't support a group that has a potential predator in it.
I love wayv so much, but I'm tired of this. And if anyone wants to yell at me for this then go ahead, but first ask yourself why you're willing to put a man you don't know over your morals.

YES?????????you need to remember why big acc just ABANDON IDOL FOR DATING, this also involves aging but JK goes beyond smoking drinking and talking about sex, if you never been in Korea you might not understand but they use the term '' clean'' to the idol who looks like an angel, why do you think female idols are criticized for getting tattoos or acting like an adult like smoking drinking and dating???? Do you know how much the company earns from these fans? because these are the fans who buy ANYTHING related to the idol, I was once someone who bought information to be able to follow BTS before Covid and yes I freaked out about dating rumors, I'm not that person anymore but you needed to see so many sick people to the idol, and many fans are like that, those who support purchases are mostly Koreans and Chinese, which is why idols are afraid of being canceled in China for example
EVERYTHING IS MONEY these fansite accounts earn from it and company members too! by sale and exchange of information
As far as I've seen, JK ''disappointed'' for looking ''too'' adult, and many fansites are abandoning him, he doesn't look like that ''baby'' kookiie baby star candy as they call him And what was worse was his day without a shirt on Tiktok, they said he sold himself and got dirty, he's not ''clean'' anymore There is so much on the Korean and Chinese forums, what you learn is nothing compared to there
I don't support that kind of attitude, and I no longer do the things I used to do
https://www.tumblr.com/aajjks/733987981608796160/as-someone-who-has-been-in-the-army-since-2016-i?source=share
I’m always amazed how you guys admit your darkest secrets here I’m glad that you’re not that person anymore. I really hope you’re not oh my God, the Chinese and the Koreans. They have some really conservative standards I would say.

okay i heard about lisa’s and one of her fansite’s weibo accounts being shut down by the chinese gov supposedly due to the crazy horse shows but apparently china is considering exiling angelababy (hugely famous chinese actress) for attending ….?????? am i on drugs wtf is going on ???????
after a little bit of research it seems that the chinese gov banning your weibo acc actually basically means you are banned in china. so now lisa is banned in china? huh???
im sorry WHAT ????? this is just ridiculous ???? i know the chinese gov is strict for celebs’ images but this is just crazy ????? and i saw ppl on twt diminishing it and saying no one cares but this is a BIG deal, china is such a huge market and lisa already had a big presence there 😐 this is a big and bad thing
(also i visited the accounts of the other two celebs and they worked fine for me, so idk if it was maybe a temporary thing for them ?)

So I’m officially fully back and working on updating / overhauling everything including my desktop theme (no idea how many people still use it on desktop… but I’m an antique tumblr user and have an emotional attachment to desktop themes, and also spend most of my time at work on my laptop… it makes me sad to see how few people even have a desktop theme set up…)
A few things in case anyone even sees this:
— This blog is run almost entirely off of manually scheduled posts, although in the future that might change to a queue. (I don’t tag that because then everything would have that tag…) If I like a post that almost always means it has been added to my schedule / queue.
— I’m making a new updates & content blog for JunHao, it will consist mostly of updates (official & fansite pics, social media posts by them, etc.) but will also reblog content about / featuring them made by fellow tumblr users, which will keep the blog active even on slow days or if I have to take time away (such as when my job gets busy). Everything will be well-tagged so people can filter or seek out the content they want. And I plan on having a Tags page & post. Translations from Korean to English will be my own, but as I don’t speak Chinese those will be sourced elsewhere (with proper credit and attribution given of course). Of course all posts that aren’t reblogs will be sourced and credited. I’ve run update-only blogs for other groups in the past so I know what I’m doing to an extent. I’ll be replacing this post with an updated one that links to the blog once it is up and running.
— No, I haven’t written a single word of any fic yet even though I think about them for the 2+ hours I commute to work 4 days a week… starting is the first huge major hurdle for me, I’m super critical of my writing (even before I start writing) and since I’m worried whether I can write any of my ideas well it makes it hard to start (even though I won’t know if it will turn out well until I try). If everything I thought about them was written down though I’d have already written multiple 100k+ works *sigh* but it’s also hard to write at work, the only place I can really write, since I’m worried I’ll lose my flow once I’m interrupted by a customer haha

What Tokyopop Still Means to Me
Tumblr media
I didn’t realize it until I just read this article, but this year is 25 years of Tokyopop still being around (even though it fell off the manga map for a while after 2011).
I know there’s a lot of criticism towards its founder, Stu Levy, and a lot of it is warranted. But I still respect Tokyopop for showing Japanese manga publishers that America can be a hotspot for manga during a time when that wasn’t the case.
Tokyopop was also a part of my early ‘20s and something I can’t really ignore.
Back in the late ‘90s/early ‘2000s, I used to hang around Flushing, NY. It was a part of New York where you can find things all Asian. Around those years, there were comic book shops in certain parts of the area. There was one particular shop where I found out about Tokyopop. That place had Volume 1 of Great Teacher Onizuka. I just watched all of the anime in Chinese and became obsessed with the series. I browsed various GTO fansites and learned about stuff that happened in the manga (note: scanlations weren’t really prevalent at the time, so everything was text summaries/accounts from other users).
GTO Volume 1 was my first actual manga purchase after years of buying American comics. It was really cool to see a series I was obsessed with published in English and in the right-to-left format that I was familiar with as I was surrounded by Asian magazines my parents read growing up. Some time later, I started to read Chobits as well and my manga collecting began to flourish after.
Although it was a turbulent time for me as it was still just a couple years after being diagnosed with major depression, I look at those years with fondness as I felt that there was always something (manga, anime, video games, etc.) for me out there to help me cope. I even managed to talk to friends about certain Tokyopop manga, who all happened to be girls - the one audience that Tokyopop truly reached out to.
Love Hina, Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura, GetBackers, Tokyo Mew Mew, etc. - I could go on and on. A lot of fans learned about and got to experience manga for the 1st time through Tokyopop titles. Tokyopop really accomplished something remarkable and they forced Viz Media, who didn’t believe in the potential of keeping manga in the R-to-L format at the time, to follow suit.
Also, I know people who dislike Stu Levy, but there are times where I do agree with him about certain things. Last year, in a ICv2 interview, he talked about how manga piracy is still rampant compared to anime piracy due to the variety of legal streaming options. There’s usually more anime exposure than manga exposure. A lot of my otaku friends would rather watch anime than read manga. I do agree with Stu that manga should be bigger or just as popular as anime. I know the manga market is in a new golden age, but there’s going to be uncertainty about what the next big manga hit that truly gets everyone reading will be.
In any case, I’m happy that Tokyopop is still doing its thing and finding its place in the manga world again. They’re taking chances on other titles that most publishers aren’t looking at. It’s okay if you still don’t root for Stu. You can root for the other creators who are involved with the company.
Memories are sometimes messy, but they still have value today. So thank you, Tokyopop, for making me a manga fan during a time when I needed to be one the most.

Capcom's Official AA Fanclub Surveys - DGS Edition
Many Western fans may be familiar with the Turnabout 4koma comics that get posted on the official AA fanclub site that Capcom runs, thanks to some lovely fans on tumblr and elsewhere who have shared their translations. What fewer people seem to know about is the character surveys.
Back in the old days, they used to hold a survey on Capcom's official AA fansite every few months where they'd write about the seasonal activities of a handful of characters and ask fans to vote for the funniest/most pleasant/strangest/etc answer.
They stopped doing them in like... 2016? 2017? The original text is lost for good as far as I can tell. Even the wayback machine couldn't help because the content was password locked and you can't get past the password wall while remaining in the archived version.
Fortunately, I saved some of my translations of them so I thought I’d share them.
Cut for length...
"February has begun, and the DGS cast is nearing the end of their journey aboard the RFS Alacrei. Which of them acted the most strangely?"
Ryuunosuke ~ Exhausted from his intensive study session, he decided to try some katana swinging practice as a change of pace and to combat his recent lack of exercise. But because he wasn't used to handling the katana, he swung it too hard and it went flying out of his hands and got stuck in the wall right next to Sherlock, who had just entered the room. Sherlock asked him, "aren't you supposed to be studying right now, Mr. Naruhodo?" and handcuffed him to his desk.
Susato- worked on developing a curriculum for Ryuunosuke. 'If we keep going at this pace, he won't be able to learn it all in time... It'll be hard on Naruhodo-sama, but we'll have to work hard through a couple of nights together.' With that thought, she created a harsh study schedule, and almost seemed to be looking forward to it for some reason.
Sherlock- Driven by excitement over the thought of returning to England after a long absence, he went up on deck to stare at the ocean. Being February, it was very cold out there and he ended up being chilled all the way to the tips of his fingers. He returned to the ship cabins and amused himself by putting his frozen hands on Ryuunosuke, who was stuck in his room studying.
Van Zieks- Upon hearing from Vortex that there was a Japanese exchange student coming to England to study law, he smashed a Lord's Bottle. He apparently also didn't care for the fact that that Japanese student wouldn't be alone, because he proceeded to shatter his chalice, too.
Hosonaga- in order to provide a respite from studying, he provided some hot chocolate. They enjoyed a pleasant tea time, marveling over how sweet and delicious the drink was until Sherlock piped up with some unnecessary trivia: 'Actually folks, chocolate has long been used in Europe as an aphrodisiac!' Everyone promptly spat it out."
"The long winter is nearly over and spring is on it's way, putting the DGS cast members in a celebratory mood. Who found the best way of enjoying spring?"
Ryuunosuke: the Yuumei University faculty members were holding a flower viewing event, and he joined the assistance committee. He exhausted himself keeping the blankets clean so the intense shower of flower petals wouldn't pile up too high on them, delivering sake and snacks, and mediating whatever pointless fights arose. To top it all off, for some reason his compensation was only a single piece of leftover candy. Talk about a sad result!
Susato- her father and the others living in his dormitory were  holding the flower viewing event, so she got up early to prepare the bentos. But her father carelessly forgot to tell her that they wanted tea cakes, so she had to go around the house and neighborhood collecting sweets. For some reason, she ended up being able to gather caramels, biscuits, candy sticks, basically everything but tea cakes, for the tea ceremony.
Sherlock- he disguised himself as a beat officer and infiltrated Scotland Yard to have some fun. There was a real beat officer napping on his feet in the spring sunshine, and while observing him, Sherlock ended up falling asleep too. Detective Gregson gave them a good scolding when he found them, but then Sherlock revealed his true identity with a "hey, it's me, folks!" "What the blazes do you think you're doing?!" Gregson shouted, his rage growing even more, and Sherlock ended up making a run for it.
Van Zieks- went to the vineyard to oversee the production of the contents of his Lord's Bottle. As he viewed the still unopened grape blossom buds, he thought about how they would someday grow up to fill his Lord's Bottle, and ended up going around to look at each one. But the farm hands couldn't stop wondering whether the bottle itself or its owner's heel might come flying at them and were quite uneasy.
Asougi: exhausted himself running around since early morning helping with the professors' flower viewing event. When it was over, he took a break, sharing his reward candy stick [the name of the candy literally translates to 1,000 year candy] with Ryuunosuke, who had also been helping out.
"I wonder if the candy's effect is halved if you share it with someone."
"That still gives us 500 years."
They laughed and enjoyed looking at the flowers until dark. Then they parted ways with a handshake and a "see you later, best friend."
(This one was something about celebrating New Years. For some reason I didn't save the original question)
"Ryuunosuke ~ To celebrate New Years, he planned to pound mochi with everyone at the office. He somehow managed to get his hands on some mochi rice and he and Sherlock started pounding. Iris was having such fun watching them that she steamed a whole bunch more mochi rice so they could have some to share, and he and Sherlock spent the whole evening pounding mochi like crazy.
Asougi~ Because it's New Years, he went around to a bunch of shrines. When he drew his new year's fortune, he got a "horrible luck" result. "I'm not worried about it," he claimed, and headed up to the mountains early on New Years morning and work hard on a full training course of purification by water, meditation under a waterfall and wooden sword practice. It seems that he was working really hard to clear his mind of all earthly thoughts
Sherlock- Agreed to help Ryuunosuke pound mochi. As Ryuunosuke was flipping the mochi over, he carelessly dropped his badge into the bowl and Sherlock mixed it in without noticing, so they had to crack open both the hard and soft mochi to look for it. Fortunately they found it in the 4th one they checked, but apparently Sherlock got his hands and face covered in sticky white mochi in the process.
Susato- Wore a furisode and went with her father to do the first shrine visit of the year. The shrine was incredibly crowded and they had to wait in line for a long time, but she brought the Encyclopaedia of British Law and a copy of the Strand Magazine in her sleeves to secretly read as they waited so she actually ended up enjoying the wait.
Van Zieks- Ryuunosuke cheerfully gave him some mochi as a New Year’s (which at that time was celebrated at the same time as the Chinese New Year) gift, which he accepted confusedly, wondering “...Can the Japanese not even keep track of when the New Year is?” Because Ryuunosuke referred to it as a rice cake, he tried to eat it like a regular cake without softening it with heat first. It was so hard that he couldn’t imagine how it could possibly be food, and ended up misunderstanding the Japanese even more!
"Autumn has arrived, and the weather is starting to cool off, which means that everyone is becoming more active. Which character chose the most pleasant autumn activity to keep busy with?"
Iris was making bread but her hands are small and it’s difficult for her to knead the dough, so she asked for Ryuunosuke’s help. She wanted to make enough to hand out to Gina and all the other homeless children in the East End, so she made a massive amount and Ryuunosuke was stuck kneading this massive mountain of bread dough all day. Apparently he became such a expert at kneading that he could be a baker now.
Asougi was practicing with his sword, slicing autumn-colored ginko leaves as they fell from the tree. He cut so many leaves, though, that he ended up making a big mess on the ground, the number of fallen leaves now having increased, and it took him a long time to clean it all up.
Sherlock: Ryuunosuke told him that he was making anpan (bread filled with sweet red bean paste, the bane of my Asian-dwelling existance) and asked Sherlock to help by being in charge of getting the poppy seeds they’d need to sprinkle on top, so Sherlock went out and gathered a ton of poppy seeds. In fact, he got so many of them that no one knew what to do with them all cuz they had a huge amount of leftovers. Sherlock said, “Well, they’re only the size of poppy seeds! Surely you two can deal with them somehow! Ahahaha!” and Iris scolded him.
(I couldn’t capture it in English, but Sherlock’s line contained a pun, and a pretty stupid one at that, so that’s part of why he got scolded)
It’s grape harvesting season, so Van Zieks commutes to the winery regularly to direct the production of the contents for his “Lord’s Bottle.” He demands perfection in everything from the selection of the grapes to the way they’re squeezed, and the winery staff is terrified by the “grim reaper’s” gaze and heel swinging (i.e. the leg thing he does in court) so they grumble as they work.
"Hearing that there’s a holiday in the West called Halloween, the people involved with the court in Japan decided to try it out themselves. Naturally Halloween is a big deal in England as well. So, which member of the DGS cast had the best celebration?"
Team Ryuunosuke and Asougi- Asougi got Naruhodo up on his shoulders and they draped a white sheet over themselves to make a ghost costume. They went out like that, but Naruhodo had such exaggerated reactions to the fear of the people who saw them and to bumping his head on tree branches that they ended up losing their balance and falling on top of each other?!
Sherlock Holmes- went wearing a horse’s head mask. Iris used her skills to make it a fancy horse covered in stars, but the eye holes weren’t well made and he had to wander around blindly. Because of that he tripped hard over a pile of coal! He ended up getting so dirty that the stars on his costume were covered up!
Van Zieks- took inspiration from his nickname and dressed up as the grim reaper. He covered himself up with a skeleton mask and hood figuring no one would know it was him. Unfortunately he got angry when he saw Megundal (McGilded) pass by and started throwing bottles and glasses and ended up giving himself away.
"November has arrived, and autumn is nearing its end. However, the DGS cast is still keeping busy, even on their days off. Which character chose the most interesting way to spend their late autumn day?"
Ryuunosuke- Thinking that he’d better learn more about British culture if he was going to be a defense attorney in Britain, he went down to the East End with Gina for a little observation. However, because an Asian like him stood out so much, he got mobbed by the other children. On top of it all, his arm band got stolen from him and he had to send a replacement request to Yumei University on the other side of the ocean.
Asougi- He went for a meal at La Quantas. The customer at a nearby table got a persimmon for dessert and scarfed it down, saying “Mm! This is it! This sweetness makes it worthy of being called a treasure among foods!” Asougi tried to comment on this by saying, “The customer at that table sure is enjoying his pershim--gak!” but he may or may not have accidentally bitten his tongue in the process and been unable to finish his sentence.
Iris- She accepted Ryuunosuke’s request to learn more about British culture and prepared a bagpipe and kilt costume for him. “This outfit sure is breezy,” Ryuunosuke said shyly upon trying it on. With Ryuunosuke now dressed, he, Iris, and the others from their office headed over to Gregson’s place to get him to treat them to some fish and chips.
Sherlock- He accepted Ryuunosuke’s request to learn more about British culture and cooked up some European style curry for dinner. Thanks to the fact that his secret ingredient was a large amount of Chinese herbal medicine style spice, it caused some strange side effects and Ryuunosuke, who’d eaten it, ended up passing out and falling over.
“Another taxing trial for Ryuunosuke has finished and now it’s December. As the year draws to a close, which character acts the strangest?”
Ryuunosuke- he was recruited to help with snow removal around Yumei University and the courthouse and he enthusiastically began his task with the help of a large shovel. He got a little carried away, though, and ended up accidentally burying his umbrella, which he’d left propped up against the side of the building, in the snow he’d just finished shoveling.  He had no choice but to share Asougi’s umbrella on the way home.
Asougi- On the way home, he nods silently to Ryuunosuke’s question of whether he’d finished his travel preparations and changes the subject: “...Come to think of it, it seems that tomorrow is celebrated in the West as God’s birthday.” “I’ve heard that they eat chicken as part of the traditional celebration. Wanna try it?” Ryuunosuke asks invitingly. Asougi is strongly opposed to that particular menu item, however, and they end up going out for their usual beef stew that night instead.
Susato- in addition to her year-end travel preparations, she also was busy with straightening up the book room in her home. She managed to get the law books in order when she suddenly stumbled upon some old issues of Strand Magazine! She hurried through the rest of her cleaning, then began flipping through the magazines she’d found, trying to decide which to take with her on her trip. She accidentally lost herself in her reading and didn’t realize it until it was already the middle of the night.
Sherlock- he was in the middle of a long ship voyage when Christmas night came. His mind on his partner in a far-off country, he made a toast alone on deck, when suddenly the crew began shooting off fireworks with a cry of “Merry Christmas!” Sherlock had to dart back and forth across the deck to prevent the fireworks from hitting him and setting off the explosive chemicals he carries with him.

is it me or does china or those so call companies celebrities are signed under needs to do more to protect actors, idols and etc? And I say china because I know celebrities bring a lot of business to china, so they should do more to protect them as well, whether it be a law where fans need to be at a certain distance from celebrities or make it illegal to camp outside their hotels, I don’t need to know when GG or DD goes to work or return, like they legit camp outside to see them pass them
Hello Anon! I would answer all parts of your ask here. looks like there are three sections to this.
I’ll be keeping everything under a cut and just a disclaimer that this is from my own research and opinions.
So what laws are there and what part do ‘Celebrities’ play in the Country?
• An important point I wanna start this answer with is that celebrities in China are very different, in terms of they have values they have to uphold if they wanna continue being allowed to be on air and work. In other countries, of course, a celebrity’s image is still something to watch out for, but it’s not like they are gonna be blacklisted. some of the guidelines they have to follow released fairly recent as follows :
should not "violate ethics, morals, social public order or good customs, causing serious negative social impact"
should not incite hatred and discrimination between ethnic groups, or promote cults and superstitions.
not organise, take part in or promote illegal activities such as pornography, gambling, drugs and violence, among other activities.
There are actors who were blacklisted and had to take a hiatus. At one point, people did support comeback stories but CHN is pushing stricter sanctions for those who fall in this category. They have to submit an application to China Association of Performing Arts (CAPA) if they even plan to make a comeback and be evaluated before they can continue. Also take a look at the recent issue with Xianjiang Cotton and how celebrities were quick to voice out their support and drop the endorsements. It’s part of their job. It’s part of the values they have to uphold. The sense of virtue before arts. They are expected to be more morally upright than the common people.
I wanna start with this for you to understand what’s it like to be a star in CHN. And for GG and Web who are very very popular. If you do a quick search, you will find that there are more rules to control how these celebrities present themselves vs. protecting them. The way I see it, it’s even more dangerous for them to have a dedicated following more than anything. They cannot be so popular that they eclipse certain messages that the gov’t wants to send. There are more laws on online hate and slander against celebrities than the physical suppression of these stalkers. The concept of: The fans reflect the celebrities. This is the infuriating side to this. It is the same challenge GG faced during and post 22*. The logic of: ‘xx fans are causing trouble by blocking airport entrance is the idol’s fault’ . In one such incident, GG was the one who apologized. his team did ban airport photos but he still had to apologize personally to people on the plane. During his shoot with Ace, he had to apologize to the director and crew cause people were camping and taking photos. You see where I’m going here Anon?
The general rules in photos and videos is that it can be taken provided that it’s in a public area. This is why Web, during the shooting of LOF kept pointing out people who were taking pictures to authorities. Earning him the title of Hengdian Hawkeye. There are no iron clad rules to protect them. These celebrities often have to hire lawyers and security team to enforce their privacy. This is where their companies come in. but tbh yh and wjjw did next to nothing in protecting them. It’s their own studios. their own dedicated team that’s doing the work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
who are these people following them?
• The type of fans that you are describing, going to the lengths of putting tracking devices and even secret cameras are sishengs. This is not limited to GG and Web only, it’s a problem for other celebrities too and not just with Chinese fans. For example in Korea, the counterpart to this is sasaeng. They are private life fans. They thrive on sharing personal information, even as far as an address. I don’t see this culture stopping anytime soon. We have more hope on addressing online slander and harmful rumors than erasing sishengs. I’m just being realistic here. The audience to this kind of material is huge and it’s even making it’s way to international platform. It’s the concept of wanting exclusive information. being the first to know a news or a filming tidbit and so on.
I also just wanna add that people you see taking pictures of let’s say at airports in Web’s case or when he’s off to DDU are not exactly sishengs. Some of them are even fansites. provided that it’s a public schedule and he one time even acknowledged them when they greeted him happy bday. Tho they CLEARLY DO NOT WANT to be photographed when filming dramas ( going to and leaving ) + airports.
what can we do as fans?
• I think you answered that Anon. We know what’s right. We know what not to share. It’s hard especially if you see it on your feed, just don’t share it again and distribute to more people. If you notice someone sharing, don’t be so hostile, you can inform them nicely. block sisheng accounts. don’t give them the audience that they want. I know we can be guilty of this at one point or another, knowing flight details and so on. It’s a hard practice to remove but we have to try very hard to not be tempted.
This is why GG and Web are really sending the message for fans to have their own lives. Of not chasing stars too much ( which also is something their gov’t does not endorse and is a whole topic of it’s own ) and neglecting the other people around them. Don’t vote too much. Don’t cause unnecessary trouble in the name of being GG and Web’s fan in public places. It’s what I really feel strongly about when it comes to all of this. If you are a person who can balance fandom and personal life + knows the boundaries, then you’re good.
