Isaac + the library: my headcanons (bc he is my people)
He reads too much to buy all of his books, so he mostly borrows from the library.
He uses the public library most bc he’s nearly exhausted his interests in the school one
He has his library card number memorized
The librarians all know him by name, and he’s on a first name basis with most of the public library staff.
He has a preferred chair in the school library for when he has free time, and no one else sits there. Ever.
No one believes him that he doesn’t have any fines. But he doesn’t! (he doesn’t keep them long enough to miss the deadlines)
He has, however, owed money for ruined books from when he’s been caught in the rain or spilled food or drink on it.
His holds list is a mile long, and yes he’s adding another tonight.
He has stacks of books lying all over his bedroom bc he filled his book shelf years ago, and the books have to go somewhere.
There are also several piles running up the stairs, off to the side, and a basket by the front door.
He refuses to let anyone in his room or touch his books bc he has a system, and yes it makes sense!
He only reads physical books. No digital copies, thank you!
He prefers paperbacks. They’re easier to carry.
He gets giddy when they can fit in his back pocket.
The only time he gets in trouble at school is for not paying attention (too busy reading to care)
Teachers take his books sometimes and give them back after class.
No one else takes his books. Ever. He lets his friends hold them, tho. They’re nice.
He wants a bookmark that reads: “Yes, I’m reading a book. No, I don’t want to talk to you about it. Go away.” So that he can display it while reading in public places.
Walking and reading is second nature. Yes, he can and will do both.

Crafty Crafterson
My uber-talented daughter-in-law inspired me to try something deliciously spooky. We watched Hocus Pocus 2 together the weekend that it aired and we share a love for all things Halloweeny. When Winifred Sanderson called for her spell book, “BooooOOOOK!”, Jamie mentioned that there are all sorts of DIY videos online that show how to make your very own spell book. I was intrigued.
Some were very elaborate, some were super simple, some were perfect replicas of the Hocus Pocus book. I chose to do something simple, with elements of Winifred’s book. I didn’t want to copy her book because it has (shudder) snakes on the cover. Nope, nope, nope. And if you know me, you know that I had no intention of investing more than a couple of bucks in this project. You guys, it was so much fun.
You can use any book, but I happened to have one of those big fake books - you know the ones, they’re made of wood and you can store stuff inside them. I was gifted a couple of them years ago and do love them, but I don’t need two. So I had the base for my project. After watching a couple of DIY videos and getting ideas I tweaked things to be able to use what I already had on hand. I had tissue paper, glue, paint, twine, a hot glue gun, and an imagination. All I needed was an eyeball. I wanted my book to have a creepy eye, but I didn’t want to buy a sack of those cheap, plastic eyes that are readily available now. People float them in Halloween punch bowls and they’re effective, but I wanted something more realistic. I tumbled it in my mind and just as I was thinking that I didn’t want to use those adhesive googly eyes, EUREKA! I bought the $2 pack of googly eyes, sliced open the back, printed a pupil that looked real, and had the perfect eye...that moves when you move the book! But I’m getting ahead of myself.
First, I used tissue paper and a mixture of white glue and water to cover the surface of the book and make it look old and wrinkly.
Then I hot glued twine in places where I wanted it to look like the book was stitched together. I placed two strands side by side to look like a seam.
I let that dry overnight and the next day I painted it.
See that googly eye at top left? That’s the base for my creepy eye. All I had to do was swap the black disc inside for one of these.
I did a few chores and let the paint dry and then the fun really started. I dipped the handle of a paintbrush in black paint and made matching dots on each side all along those seams. Then I used a hot glue gun to connect the dots, and lo and behold - we have stitches!
Those hot glue stitches would eventually get a swipe of paint but first I had to get busy on the eye. I popped in my printed pupil, sealed up the back and gave it a blob of glue. Then I used the hot glue gun to go back and forth over the eye to make it look like a wrinkly eyelid. I may have gone overboard with the wrinkly eyelid.
Anyway, without boring you to tears, I kept my booooOOOK very simple. After the glue on the eye hardened I painted the stitches and the eyelid, touched up a few spots on the book that needed paint, and called it done.
Not perfect, but perfectly fine for me. I may still add some depth to the paint color, it looks a bit flat. Could be dustier and more worn. Still, it looks like it could keep my secrets. What a fun and super easy craft for this spooky season. Bonus feature is that it probably put me on at least three new prayer chains.
Remember that wonderful quote from Practical Magic (another favorite book and movie!) ?
That one speaks to me. Don’t try to conform, don’t try to fit the mold, just enjoy whatever your freaky little heart wants. I only seem normal in October when my hobbies suddenly become decor. The older I get the more determined I am to follow my heart and ignore anyone who poo-poos my fun. If someone is a rabid football fan or buys yarn in bulk for crochet projects I don’t care. Enjoy! If I choose to spend my day burning my fingerprints off with a hot glue gun to make a creepy spell book then that shouldn’t matter either, right? Relax, Mrs. Kravitz. There’s a whole generation that won’t get that reference.
Well, that got weird. I think I have PTSD from too many years in the Bible Belt. Too much judgment, not enough joy. My default is to defend my interests. I once had a school mom tell me that my tombstone decor was “disrespectful to the dead”. Did she think I had actual corpses buried under my shrubs? Did she think that Izzy Dead and Barry M. Deep were real people? In hindsight I probably should have just asked for a lock of her hair, bet I never would have seen her again.
I’ll get this post back on the rails and just say I had a lovely time at my desk making a Halloween craft. Today I need to freshen some bedrooms because it’s about to get crazy around here. Matt will fly in tomorrow evening, then the Edgewater gang will arrive Friday after work. It’ll be a full house this weekend! FUN! I need to make a grocery run and try to remember how to feed a crowd. Isn’t that a great problem to have? I’m so very lucky to have a family that wants to be together. Now there is a source of joy.
Go find yourself a little joy today - chat with a friend, pick up a spiffy new bottle of nail polish, lose yourself in a good book, take a walk and soak up some fall color, whatever works or you. Fill your emotional tank, I think we could all use a little boost. The world is exhausting right now, so carve out a little peace and happiness - you need it. Take care of your sweet soul. It matters. YOU matter. I’m going to go outside with a book and spend fifteen or twenty minutes listening to birds sing and enjoying the 60 degree weather. Then I’ll tackle the bedrooms.
This post was bonkers, but so am I. Just be glad you didn’t pay for this nonsense.
Stay safe, stay well, stay true to the weirdo inside you.
Nancy

If you ever write a book I will read it from cover to cover and that’s saying a lot because I have a lot of trouble reading actual books. Your words are so captivating that it feels like watching a film. It’s so good at conveying it’s mood, it flows so well. I applaud you.

I want to get the paperbacks of the series but I CANT CUZ MOM DOESNT LET ME BUY ONLINE!!! 😭 AND IM NOT OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE A JOB! Well I am but haven’t gotten accepted 🥺. And it’s not like I even know how to work technology like look I’m failing ALL my classes cuz I don’t know how to submit an ESSAY or how to work it. So I can kiss Christmas goodbye for oh just A FEW YEARS! Like sorry mom I can’t concentrate I already told you my meds aren’t working and want to drop them cuz they suuuuuck but nope “you need them you know you do” yes mom I know I need meds to function but not these these are badddd meds make me crash HARD and so many other things that exhaust me more. Anyways sorry for vomiting my feelings here hehe this is my safe spot because no one I know has tumblr so I’m basically anonymous here and can rant 🥱 I hope you have a good day or night or evening or dawn or dusk or afternoon or all-nighter whatever you chose hope it’s good :D
I just hope they don’t take my phone away when they realize I am failing cuz then I’m pretty sure I’ll lose the last but of motivation I have. Literally all I do is read fan fiction and then sleep.
Also if y’all know of any books that are interesting like aftg series please tell me and I’ll try to find them online. I’ve been trying to get more into reading but haven’t found anything that catches my attention like those. I tried reading Harry Potter and then Percy Jackson but couldn’t get past the first chapter it felt endless.

I... accidentally made a thing.
I was talking to my sweet friend @frimushroom about fairy gardens and miniatures and bookends and this kinda happened.
Some day it may turn into an actual physical diorama that ends up on my bookshelf, but for now it was just really fun to draw :)
(I probably don’t need to tell you this, but you can click on all the pictures for higher resolution.)

okay so like? i made the best purchase ever about two weeks ago? i got really into the first magnus chase book when i bought it on black friday at hpb so i went ahead and ordered the second book on hpb’s online store. me being me, i go to hardcover n pick the cheapest hardcover i can find as long as its in good condition. i come across one that’s $4.66 and then i get an extra 30% off, making the book come to $3.26. i thought wow, i did pretty good there.
i wasn’t really paying attention to the full description of the book at the time and i briefly notice the words “special limited addition” after the title but i thought i’d just get a book with a cool cover. fast forward to this past weekend when i got home after staying with my mom for week, my book’s in the mall n i run inside n rip the packaging open bc i am so ready to binge read this book. when i open it its got a plastic wrap over it and then a sticker that says, “special edition, author signed, special artwork inside, etc.” and im like?? holy fucking shit?? so i rip of the plastic n take a look at the cool book sleeve box and then i opened up the book and lo’ and behold, it’s fucking signed by the man, the myth, the legend himself, rick riordan. and its also got artwork of my fav character, alex fierro, in it and the outsides of the pages are this glittery silver.
pretty damn sweet yeah? well guess the fuck what. i found out that this special limited edition shit usually runs for $70 or more. and this book? i managed to get it for $3.26. now, i’m not quite sure if it being out a year makes the limited edition price drop (i figure it really wouldnt? bc u kno...limited edition...) but anyways. im jus glad i fucking got a cheap ass book with a signature, box sleeve, artwork, and pretty pages.
