Joe likes to give Nicky a themed Advent calendar of his own creation when he has the time to organize it (so like, four to five times a decade because the Old Guard likes to go on rescue missions around the winter holidays to get people home).

One year, the theme was knives. Another year, the theme was terrariums. Yet another, hard-to-find spices.

Nicky’s favorite so far was the year Joe wrote two letters for each day. One went to Nicky and told of Joe’s favorite winter memories. The other went to a conservative cardinal (different one each day) and basically said, “You suck. Make better decisions. Jesus did not decide to become mortal only for you to make life worse in his name.” On Christmas, he sent that letter to the Pope.
