agent mcsweeten was the perfect example of a nonthreatening male expressing interest in a female main character.
all his efforts were respectful and kind. it was kind of a puppy love for sure. but unlike some portrayals of male interest in women in current media, he never was overbearing, forceful, or even just annoying. everything he did was nothing if not respectful. he gets her a smoothie. he writes her a haiku. he goes to her for help with his father’s case because he trusts her, wanting or expecting nothing from her other than maybe the help of a friend.
he never expects anything from her. ever.
it’s puppy love, but it’s respectful. it’s sweet, but never overbearing.
and she cares for him, truly. she thinks the haiku is sweet and she smiles. when he is in an hour of need, she helps him. asks nate to make it into a case because after all these years of knowing him, she knows he’s good, and maybe even a friend.
nothing would ever happen between them. but that didn’t matter to mcsweeten, because he never expected anything from her to begin with.
he still thinks she’s beautiful, smart, and tough. stunning. but more than that, she’s a friend that he trusts and respects above all else, even his feelings.

okay but once mcsweeten like For Sure figures/finds out that ‘agents’ hagen and thomas are not fbi agents at all and are, in fact, modern day robin hoods, an unexpected friendship forms between all of them
like,
he gets state-of-the-art lock picks with a video instruction (featuring an enthusiastic parker) of how to use them if he needs stealth instead of the fbi go-to tactic of breaking down doors
he gets an email with little animations that look like him and a burner phone in case he needs them and needs to get in contact with them, or finds people that could be helped by leverage international (vaguely explained in another email for the sake of plausible deniability)
he also starts getting cookies and pastries sent to his doorstep, and even more easy but delicious recipes that can be made on the go since his job takes him all over
the first two were signed from parker and hardison respectively, but the third was signed by a named eliot, who he assumes to be their team member. he thinks it would be cool to meet him sometime, especially if he keeps up sending the amazing food and recipes
then he starts getting postcards with little notes and greetings from places they’ve been and pictures on the front that they thought he’d enjoy
(he also doesn’t look up the area the postcard was sent from to see if there were any corporate upheavals or arrests. of course not.)
then that first christmas he gets an envelope with a handwritten letter of thanks and offers to ever help in times of need. they also call him a friend, which, no, he absolutely does not smile like an idiot at it
in the envelope was also a picture of three people: parker, hardison, and the man he assumes to be eliot. they’re all wearing reindeer antlers and matching sweaters. parker’s eyes and twinkling and eliot looks grumpy, but something tells him that it’s an act. they all look incredibly happy and close
oh, he thinks
more than just a team, then
he smiles and works on a letter of his own to send to a place called the bridgeport brewpub
