what i AM willing to do:
animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, simple insects)
most mythical and extinct animals
humans
anthro/furry
body horror
violence/gore
fanart
original characters

what i am NOT willing to do:
anything nsfw
anything hateful/promoting hate speech
pedophilic, incestuous, or non-consensual relationships
heavy mecha
heavy perspective
hyperrealism
i reserve the right to deny any commission for any reason - just don’t be weird and we’ll be fine
please provide references/a detailed description if you want anything specific! personality descriptions are very much appreciated if you’re getting a specific character so i can properly draw the pose/expression.
focal item/character
simple sketch — $7-12, additional $8 per extra character
Tumblr media
if you’d like simple and quick shading like on the first example here, let me know! also feel free to choose background and line colour (default is purple lines & grey or white background)
coloured sketch — $15-20, additional $10 per extra character
Tumblr media
the second image here would be somewhere around $35 for the shading, but i didn’t have many examples for this style lol
plain lineart — $16-30, additional $14 per extra character
Tumblr media
please specify the complexity you’d like by referencing the examples given here! again, feel free to choose line and background colour
reference sheet — $30-45

please provide a detailed description of the character for this! picture references are best but i can 100% go off of descriptions as well, and please provide a description of their personality, character traits, etc
simple flat colour
headshot: $15-22
halfbody: $20-25
fullbody: $26-35
Tumblr media
for some reason i don’t have an example for headshot for this one but it’s essentially shoulders-up
complex flat colour
headshot: $30-36
halfbody: $35-42
fullbody: $40-50
Tumblr media
please note that the second example here has a complex background that would cost more, but just the main character itself would be around $40
shading
shading prices will be added on top of any of the above
simple shading — $15-45
Tumblr media
the fire in the second example here does count as simple shading and a very simple background so it wouldn’t be any extra money for a fire background like this one
complex shading — $50-90
Tumblr media
all of these prices are set with a presumed transparent, solid colour, or simple background. these are all free of charge.
backgrounds
all background prices are added onto existing focal item prices. standalone scenes and backgrounds without a focal item are the same prices as listed here.
simple backgrounds/flourishes — $10-20
Tumblr media
sorry for the reused pictures i don’t have a whole ton of examples
complex backgrounds — $25-75
Tumblr media
if you have any questions or would like to know what i’d charge for any of these examples here, send me a dm and i’ll answer as fast as i can! lots of detail in the descriptions of what you’d like is very appreciated, and feel free to correct me on anything you want different! dm me if interested!

my first two jobs ever, in order, were "board game teacher" and "university library assistant," so tho I've never formally studied games (I have been dropping out of college on and off since 2015, and was a freshman in 2012 lmao) I've been casually exposed to games and the people who make and play them in a professional context, as well as having the research skills to help close the gaps. i actually kind of hate playing board games but i loved GM-ing the coop arkham horror and watching my players, which i did for seven years straight.
my current fixation is the result of several years' fucking around on YT watching all kinds of game content, from LPs to specific game dissection to video essayists. jacob geller and folding ideas are kind of gold standards, but this week I've been really enjoying errant signals in particular. Sometimes I'm introduced to concepts this way - ludonarrative dissonance, ergodic literature, the magic circle, etc. that, and getting recommendations from friends or accidentally stumbling into game studies via other research (such as the paper i wrote a few years ago on theater-as-games in prison contexts). most of it though is having thoughts and opinions on things and letting it percolate until i am dangerous enough to find someone who's already explained a concept better than I could, and then running with that. find something that cites its sources, and then chase the ones that seem interesting.
my syllabus post is very much not a reclist, though i do in varying ways recommend everything on that list and it might be of use. here's some stuff I think would be great starting points:
Rules of Play - Game Design Fundamentals, Salen and Zimmerman. This book is an excellent resource, as it introduces a wide variety of scholars who you can dive into as it is relevant to your interests as well as providing tons of useful frameworks and vocabulary to go hunting. It's an easy read with concise bullet-point summaries after each chapter, and the PDF is hyperlinked for easy navigation. I might have found this via Wikipedia, honestly.
A Play of Bodies: A Phenomenology of Video Game Experience, Keogh. What I'm currently liveblogging - it is firmly a literary/philosophical work, rather than by/for designers, and correspondingly it's a little more difficult without at least passing familiarity with cyborg theory or any brand or offshoot of post-modernism, but still fairly digestible and a great read so far.
My Life as a Night Elf Priest: An Anthropological Account of World of Warcraft, Nardi. Found this during my theater-and-games paper, and MMO anthropology is not really my thing, but it's a nice complement to the other books as an explicitly player-theorist perspective. Also provides a more approachable introduction to a variety of theorists and sources. (Open access on JSTOR!)
Draw Your Weapons, Sarah Sentilles. I'm biased because I discovered this book by accidentally attending an author event at my local museum, and the games portion is incidental, but if you can find it I think this analysis of the relationship between depictions of violence and violence itself is worth your time. Memorable re: games for its discussion of Press F To Pay Respects.
here are some videos which I offer as examples of channels you might enjoy diving into, looking for additional jumping-off points:
Playing as Anyone in Watch Dogs Legion, Errant Signal. I really appreciate Errant Signal's thoughtful, personal approach to analysis and especially his highlighting of buried gems in his Blips series as well as his non-self-deprecating reevaluation of some of his older analyses over his decade plus career making videos.
Controllers Control Everything, Game Makers Toolkit. Discovered via the Boss Keys series highlighting the souls games, and although I think his channel is (increasingly) geared toward devs, these are well-constructed, thoughtful videos about many aspects of game design. Even when I don't personally get what makes him enjoy Zelda dungeons in that specific way (I'm an outlier), I appreciate his analysis.
Mega Microvideos 2, Matthewmatosis. Perhaps better known for his extremely long-form essays, I love Matthewmatosis' series of microessays framed like Wario Ware minigames. They are brief but don't pull punches, and the format is uniquely delightful. (See also this microessay mixtape.)
Making Sense of Catherine Full Body, SuperButterBuns. She doesn't do much essay content, I guess, but I she loves Catherine and the Persona series, and this dissection of Catherine Full Body is an absolute treat.
Jon Bois. Okay, mostly not about games, but like - come on. 17776 and Breaking Madden, alongside everything else he's ever done, fit because I feel like they do. If nothing else, I think Pretty Good and his general use of Google Earth as a medium for storytelling have a lot of utility in talking about digital media. He's good for the soul.
The Future of Writing About Games, Jacob Geller. One of the gold standards for a reason - and especially if you're looking for further solid recommendations for other writing/creating about games. This video in particular discusses & links to some really great pieces, but his Big List of Other People's Video Essays is also a great way to spend the next month of your life. (You might notice some crossover between this list and his, only some of which is coincidental.)
if i have any conclusion, it's that my current fixation on digital literalism is me finally finding an outlet/academic match-up with a fascination i developed in 2015 when studying gonzo lit. i think the utility of academia and the long history of scholarship on a given topic, as a non-academic, is to help you express ideas or reinterpret beliefs or experiences you've had to others without having to reinvent the wheel. i always become most energized when i stop worrying about knowing all the bg and chase whatever is useful and affirming or enlightening to me. and you can get pretty far if you think about why you like what you do, and just - enthusiastically also consume non-academic stuff. maybe this is a note more for myself! but thank you for the opportunity to monologue.

Requesting fic recs for quiet tragedies and intimate character studies. Preferably minimal focus on romance. I quite enjoy studies of mechanics as they correlate to narrative.
(send me a vibe and i’ll give you a blaseball fic reading list!)
all right. so i spent quite a bit of time on this one, but it is in no way comprehensive. there are tons of character studies in this fandom, and heaps of tragedies. also not usually a huge focus on romance in blaseball, especially post-discipline, although it’s certainly out there.
i tried to keep the characters varied and limit it to just one per author, but with most of these, if you like the one i’ve linked i can vouch for there being many more from the same person worth checking out. let’s get going.
“Agency” by kfrunt is what I would call quiet, although less of a tragedy or game mechanics. This is a Fall Ball-era fic looking at Wyatt Mason IV (Ivy) and Conditional Yuniesky, both of whom are struggling with their new worlds in different ways. It’s a good introduction to Conditional Yuniesky, and Ivy is a good introduction to the Wyatts as a whole, if you’re into that. They’re a whole little pocket of Blaseball fic that has plenty to comb through.
“dead mans party” by impernia is a look at how players mourn their lost teammates, particularly the Seattle Garages. It’s also a good look at the kind of person Arturo Huerta is, and from there, impern has a number of fics about both the Garages and their dead that hit this same vibe.
“F. All of the Above” by QueenEevee is certainly a tragic character study, looking at Hiroto Wilcox following Ruby Tuesday. It’s noteworthy less because of subject matter — if you want Ruby Tuesday content, there’s no shortage — but more because of the formatting. The way this fic approaches the loss knocks the wind out of me. A quick read, but a memorable one.
“the first dream” by swordfall is a look at Lottie Ceilingfan’s meteoric rise to fame and subsequent Ego status. If you don’t know Lottie, it’s a great introduction to her. It’s also a great introduction to what it was like on the Hades Tigers during the Expansion Era. A little less on the tragedy side, but there’s some mechanics and some creeping horror at the awareness of what’s to come.
“for agony i’d rather know” by novelsinourheads is a fantastic example of a character study that leans into the inherent weirdness of blaseball without getting too wacky with it. I’m a known Gerund Pantheocide liker and supporter, so it’s unsurprising to me that this one sticks in my brain, but Stara has dozens more character studies — many of which have an interesting and haunting approach to loss and tragedy, and all of which are well worth looking at.
“forever in a day” by paopuleaf is another Wyatt fic, but it’s also about the Vault, but it’s also about hauntings and ghosts and what it means to exist when you shouldn’t anymore. Atti is excellent at writing fics with a melancholy and lost sort of air, and this one is no exception.
“growing pains” by waveridden is a personal favorite of mine. it’s a little longer than a lot of the options on this list, but it’s worth the time and the effort. The fic as a whole is about a lot of things, mainly Gloria Bugsnax and xyr attempt to learn both humanity and family, and it makes me cry every time. There’s some game mechanics, because Hayden always includes those, but mostly it’s a look at Gloria and all the people xe loves.
“I thought i heard your laughter” by cedardivine is a fun one, honestly. Megan Ito exists in a lot of variations and I think everyone has a different take on them and who and how they are, but I like the idea that New Megan is just lurking around behind them. A character study with tragedy and game mechanics just off to the side, and a quick read besides.
“A Quick Guide to Unscattering in 8 Easy Steps” by Moondragon8 hits, I think, just about every note you’ve asked for. An interesting take on scattered players and their recovery, a look at Schneider Bendie as a character and what happens when you’re traded to a new team, and a creeping awareness that things aren’t as they should be. If you can’t tell, I love this one dearly.
“sequels” by waltztangocache similarly approaches a mechanic by way of an impacted player. I love the way Hen writes about the Ambush, and this look at Tom Kirby and what his life is like after revival. There’s a series of fics connected to this one, so if you like it, there’s more. I will admit I like Kirby best — but everything here is a great time.
“The Short (But Not Insignificant) ILB Career of Kiki Familia” by cyndakip is one that I think gets passed around a ton? But that’s because it’s good. Kiki wasn’t here for long at all, but you can tell from this that she was immediately loved by her team and the fans of said team, and her death is in fact a tragedy by its very nature. This is Discipline Era lore, so you know it hurts (positive).
“spend my days in gray” by birdlord5000 is like. THE Donia Bailey fic, to me? I didn’t know much about the player lore beforehand, but this fic cemented Donia as a deeply beloved of mine. It’s quiet, it’s a character study, it’s about what it’s like to be shadowed for years and years before being stolen by a Thieves Guild, and it’s honestly a lot of fun. Not a tragedy, but damn good.
“strange to be shaped by such strange men” by baliset is… agh. Remember when York Silk was incinerated, and the entire fandom ground to a halt as we tried to grapple with that? I do! It was a lot! And Marn captured the feelings of the moment to a T. It’s set in the Hall and features a lot of beloved dead guys, and I love how York is characterized here. Marn has tons of great fics worth reading; this is up there as one of my favorite ones, though.
“the sun selecting targets” by indigostohelit is the only Jaylen and Mike fic i am going to recommend to you. But. There are so many. It’s just that the narration in this one is incredible, and I think about it often. It’s got a lot about the original necromancy and the shadowing of Mike Townsend, which I know we’ve all heard about by now and et cetera, but. God it’s so good.
“there beneath” by haunthouse! Another Wyatt fic! This one is about Wyatt Mason VI, or Violet. I will admit to being biased toward this one because it includes the Boston Flowers, my team of choice for almost the entirety of Blaseball’s run. But like. If you want tragedy, and you want game mechanics, the Wyatts tend to be a good starting place. They often die at the end.
“there’s no weather at all” by mantisqueer is a sleeper fave that I was delighted to rediscover today. Nothing like a Neerie McCloud fic to make you sad about players doomed from the very start. Moth does a really good job here at characterizing being Elsewhere; it’s one of my favorite interps, although I would encourage you to mind the CWs.
and that’s what I have! there are plenty more I would direct you to, but most of them are by someone(s) already listed here. so if one of the ones i’ve listed stands out, i would encourage you to check the author’s page and see what else they have. have fun!!!

Hihi!
Question: How did you develop your art style, and do you have multiple?(like a more realistic and a more chibi?) Also! Who inspires you to make such pretty masterpieces?
𓅭 𓅰 𓅭 𓅰
Thank you so much!!! You’re so kind!
Sorry, in advance for the extremely long response :') My hand slipped/j
These are the 3 big tips for developing an art style I wish knew when I was younger:
Find the things that inspire you, and break down what you specifically like about them.
Experiment! Try new things! Practice! Your art style will develop on its own as long as you keep creating.
Have fun! Draw what you enjoy and what makes you happy. Your style is yours; you should enjoy it.
When I was younger, I caught myself thinking things like, "I would like to draw the eyes like this, but I can't because it's not my art style." Then I realized that I was getting in my own way. Once I overcame that mental blockade, I started having fun drawing again. When I allowed myself to experiment, it also caused me to improve faster because I could figure out the things I liked and the things I didn't like. Everyone's art journey and process are different, but this helped me personally.
Yes, I do have multiple different art styles. I have my regular art style, a cartoony art style (I am not currently happy with it. I have a lot to work on), a silly doodle art style, and a realism style (or as close as I can get to it). I also draw eyes differently depending on the feeling I want. For example, I draw tear ducts on characters that I want to have a sort of scary horror vibe, and I don't on other characters (I don't really know why or how it started). I also experiment a lot, which causes my art to always look slightly different.
I also like to prioritize drawing the things that I enjoy the most. I really like drawing faces and expressions so I've practiced that the most (along with neglecting things I don't enjoy like coloring, I'm working on it I swear, I digress).
There are also a ton of little trademarks that show up over and over again. Like giving characters sideburns or hair strands that frame their faces, never adding highlights in eyes, adding swirls in hair, and there is this weird thing where I associate the number of eyelashes I give characters to their personalities (I couldn't explain it if I tried 😅). I think it's important to stumble upon little things you enjoy drawing and to keep doing it.
I never made a list of things that inspire my art even though I really should. Below, I'll list off some artists who inspire me who you can find here on Tumblr.
☆Cryptidw00rm
(also highly recommend their YouTube animatics they're absolutely breathtaking)
☆Seiishindraws
☆Sinlizards.
☆Nanamis-username
☆Viria
(their drawing tutorials have left a lasting impact on me from when I was younger. I really suggest looking them up; they're really in-depth. I couldn’t find the original posts, but it's the first results when you Google "viria art tutorial".)
I'm always instantly enamored whenever I see these artists' works. They are such a huge inspiration. Please go check them out!
There are also a ton of other artists and things that inspire me too, but I'll spare y'all for now. >:)
As a bonus, here is a little example of how my art has developed. I just found my old art from each of the listed times. This is my OC Amaryllis over the years.

Below are some collages of sketches that I hope will showcase my style (these took forever to compile)

And finally, have a Megamind that I am proud of but never posted *thumbs up*

Regarding the argument that the “movie star” is a dying concept in today’s film scene, based on what I’ve read so far, I feel that people are approaching this topic with a black-or-white perspective. I do agree that for entertainment in general today, the stars have become less important when compared to the characters and the franchises themselves. And this goes beyond superhero fiction, all entertainment fields are facing this phenomenon. For example, Jessie Buckley, who starred in the A24 horror film “Men”, despite being the star of the game “The Devil in Me”, was overshadowed by the fact that people were more interested by the franchise itself (The Dark Pictures Anthology).
It’s sorta like the “death of the auteur director” argument, except now it’s the actors facing their metaphorical death. Audiences are now viewing actors with a more critical eye since, because adaptations and continuations have become way more common, they’re viewing actors as more like the representatives of the character they’re playing. They’re only there to portray the character and get them right, not so much to be the center of attention.
That’s essentially what Quentin Tarantino was arguing, and honestly, it’s not a completely negative argument. This just tells me that people want their favorite characters to be portrayed well and “correct”, regardless of who the performer is. And sometimes, this could be a good thing as certain actors who don’t have A-list credentials can suddenly skyrocket to fame if they do a good job performing a certain character (example: Tom Holland when he got cast as Spider-Man).
Now, going back to my main point, even though I agree that the entertainment scene has changed, I don’t necessarily agree that the expectations have changed as well. Like I wrote earlier, audiences still expect a good performance. Tom Holland’s career would be dead in the water if he fucked up his portrayal of Spider-Man. What I’m trying to get at is that even if the “star” concept is dead, the actor is still important but that they can’t just skate by on their name recognition anymore. And I don’t think that’s a completely negative thing! Just to list some examples of what I mean by this:
1) Oscar Isaac received tons of critical acclaim in his portrayal of Marc Spector/Steven Grant. Even though people were watching for Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac himself still received just as much attention from the viewers because of how great his acting was.
2) For a more recent example, Jenna Ortega is getting a lot of praise for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams.
3) The entire cast of “House of the Dragon” received massive praise. In fact, I saw that Paddy Considine was getting a lot of Emmy buzz, which I wholeheartedly agree with.
4) John Cena (yes, I’m using Cena as an example) got a ton of praise for his role as Peacemaker. And honestly, I think people are starting to take him more seriously as an actor because of this role.
So, yeah, hopefully my argument here makes sense to y’all. Personally, I don’t like the way people are framing this shift in entertainment as the “death of the star”. It comes off as saying that actors have become less important when I honestly feel that it’s more the case that priorities have shifted. Actors are still important, but the portrayal of the character comes first. And even then, a really great performance will still get attention and acclaim from audiences.
Okay, that’s my TED talk, hope y’all enjoyed it.

Chaos Energy Drabbles
Gonna be usin' a cut jus' cause it's gonna be a lotta info dumping, mostly so I have a steamed out place to put this. You're free to read or to not read but it does have a lotta stuff to do w my au
Sources of Chaos Energy Chaos Energy has a few main sources, being the Chaos Emeralds (obviously), the Master Emerald, fake Chaos Emeralds (as seen in the IDW comics + SA2), the Phantom Ruby, n a ton of other magical gemstones + thingamajigs I'm not gonna list. Basically, if it's a magic rock in the Sonic world, it's prolly got Chaos energy.
Chaos energy has several forms (again, similar to canon) being light/neutral/dark, and responds based on the energy from the user and how it's being utilized.
However, some living beings come naturally with chaos energy in them! these individuals end up with superhuman abilities, like Sonic's speed and Knuckles' strength. Not every living being has chaos energy in them, but those that do are able to naturally interact with the Chaos Emeralds & the Master Emerald, which are harder to harness the energy from. The Phantom Ruby is incredibly unstable, so anyone, regardless of if they have their own chaos energy or not, is able to be affected by it. This doesn't mean they can harness its abilities naturally, it just means they're able to see visions/get the repercussions of constant exposure/etc. The fake chaos emeralds are also incredibly unstable, and as a result have a natural repelling nature to all beings.
Chaos energy is also not something that is originally meant for living beings to use. They're meant to have a natural effect on the world (The Master Emerald), or at most be harnessed through technological means (like the Ancient's technology). People with higher levels of chaos energy (Sonic, Shadow, Silver, n Infinite) have been able to tap into the power of chaos and utilize it. Despite this, it still isn't recommended. Technically any of the cast could use chaos energy to do things like go super or temporarily boost themself in other ways, but it could have devastating effects on the body.
It can lead to permanent mutations in the body that are most often painful, unraveling of someone's mind, or worse. Depending on the extent of overuse/overexposure to chaos energy, the worse the effects. It usually starts at losing a bit of your mind or your grip on things, which can put people in a trance like/disassociative state. Past that, it leads to actual degradation of their mental state and body. It's fully possible for people to be erased from existence from overuse. You can kinda compare it to Werehog Sonic (for mutations, except for others it wld be more permanent and not based off of Dark and Light Gaia's energies, and a lot more catastrophic) & Fleetway Super Sonic cause that's kinda where I got some inspiration from, but a little less murder-y (although the intent may be there) and a little more "lovecraftian Horrors at my bedroom door" in inspiration
So most people tend to try and use a filter or have a time limit for the amount of time they use it. Shadow, for example, uses chaos energy in small bursts/periods. Whenever someone goes into a super state, they have a set amount of time before they have to stop. It's mostly just a safety precaution that's taken so that incidents like "falling out of space and orbit down to the earth below" don't happen.
Regarding fake Chaos Emeralds and the Phantom Ruby, though, it's a little different. The Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds are more refined and tempered into more safe and secure forms. They're less unstable, and can be interacted with normally without them affecting someone's chaos levels. Fake Chaos Emeralds lack this, and tend to have a very dangerous effect on people. Due to being cheap copies of the real deal, they are incredibly explosive, and the power tends to bleed out into the open. Slight mishaps can lead to a very explosive ending regarding fake Chaos Emeralds. These need a filter more than any other source of chaos energy because of it. This filter can be biological, mechanical, or sorted through any other means, in order to 'purify' the energy and make it into a more usable and manageable state.
The Phantom Ruby is less explosive than the fake Chaos Emeralds and is easier to utilize than them. It still is harder to master the use of, but it isn't impossible. Rather than bestowing people with a super form/enhanced abilities/etc, it's more focused on time n space, like in the canon. Not much can really be said about them cause nothing really changes from canon for it.
I don't have much more to add here? I think that's it. Cause the way it plays into this AU will be explained when I do a Sonic character profile

Hi Pia
I'm curious, do you enjoy reading fics with trauma recovery as much as you enjoy writing them?
And is there anything you enjoy writing but hate/dislike reading? And vice versa?
Hi anon!
I do enjoy reading fics with trauma recovery! It's mostly what I read when I'm looking for something longer, however, I don't like trauma recovery just because it's trauma recovery? It needs other stuff too. A lot of folks assumed I'd like the Steve/Bucky Marvel pairing because Bucky has PTSD, but I actually can't stand that pairing (though I like both characters) and don't care as much about those specific narratives of PTSD (interpersonal trauma recovery interests me more than military or natural disaster trauma recovery, for example).
I don't know if I enjoy reading fics with trauma recovery as much as I enjoy writing it. In fact I'd say that's not true anymore because I've read very few fics with trauma recovery since I started writing Falling Falling Stars and I kind of realised I could write exactly what I wanted. Ever since then, reading the fanfiction of other folks doing trauma recovery is a harder sell to me personally, though I still do look for hurt/comfort etc.
I do still reread old fics I love, and old novels with trauma recovery / hurt/comfort that I love. But I don't... reread that content as much as I write that content, so if we're talking about 'time spent reading trauma recovery' vs. 'time spent writing/editing trauma recovery' alone, then I would definitely like writing it more.
Most of the original novels I've recced here and on Goodreads, particularly in romance but not always, generally have trauma recovery as a centralised theme or major part of the story.
As for stuff I like writing but hate/dislike reading:
Horror and supernatural horror (can't watch it, don't love reading it, really enjoy writing it)
Stories that are too long (lol)
Probably other stuff I'm forgetting.
And for stuff I don't like writing but really like reading:
Like, too much to list! I don't like writing nonfiction novels but I read a ton of nonfiction novels, lol. I don't really like writing high literature but I still read it. I don't like writing plays for the stage but I'll read 'em.
I mean isn't this true of most writers? Most of what we haven't written and/or don't enjoy writing is often what we're still going to really love, because we can't do everything. Idk, I have no interest in writing The Great British Bake Off, but I really like watching it. I have no interest in writing police procedurals but I love watching them.
Specifically in terms of romance fic, I'm not sure. Probably areas where I'm extremely concerned about the level of work involved in making a slightly accurate fanfiction - like getting terminology, customs and costumes right in certain fandoms like say, Natsume's Book of Friends or Mo Dao Zu Shi, and the actual process of writing seems extremely intimidating but I like reading (or have liked reading) stories in those fandom/s where other people are willing to do that work. I've definitely been thinking about researching this a bit more with an intention to writing fic going forward though.
I can be a really lazy writer, but I'm also a writer who can really appreciate when another writer has done the hard yards in areas of fandom where I want to read, but writing fills me with :/ feelings. Like, I really respect when you can see an author's care and research, but it's not weighing down the page and I don't feel like I'm getting a lecture that feels like a Wiki page that's been condensed down. Some of my favourite fandoms for like weird random niche knowledge included Dragon Age: Inquisition, and that was a fandom where I ended up doing a ton of research myself (i.e. what did horses eat 200 years ago, how did you prepare and store their food).
In terms of genre, there's not a ton of difference honestly. I don't love writing or reading gen. I don't love writing or reading fluff in the absence of hurt/comfort. I don't love writing or reading hurt-no-comfort. Maybe the biggest one is that on the very rare occasion I'll read a heterosexual PWP that has a kink I'm really looking for, but I don't intend to ever write het again.
(Finally pressing post on this after forgetting I had it in my drafts for ages!)

Let's Talk About Horror :D
I absolutely love horror. As a genre, as a concept, no matter the medium. Horror movies, horror games, horror stories, etc. No matter the vessel the idea is being portrayed through, it always requires that you view it from a unique lens.
I believe that horror is congenitally detached from most other genres. Horror games, for example, are often fairly anti-player; they sacrifice "playability" to deliver an intended effect. Horror movies similarly forego the comfort of the viewer, much for the same reason.
I've played a ton of horror games in my time, and a lot of the central debate surrounding them is all rooted in a single question: how do you make a horror game "scary"? But even asking that is a bit rhetorical, it creates so many provably true possibilities that there isn't, and can never be, a correct response.
You can take away the player's means of self defense, bolster the strength of enemies to make them a genuine threat, limit resources, restrict controls, build a harsh atmosphere, limit visibility, subvert the player's expectations to catch them off-guard, create uncanny or horrifying entities, or do a combination of any of these things. There are far more possibilities than the ones mentioned here, these are quite literally examples listed off the top of my head.
But all of these things are fundamentally asynchronous in terms of "game design", as I feel like they go against what people often play video games for to begin with. But through that bold willingness to shatter our perceived conventions, they create something new and separate that begs to be analyzed from a proprietary perspective.
Sure, Resident Evil 1's movement isn't "fun", but was it ever trying to be? I don't really believe so. Each effortful motion throughout the Spencer Mansion forces the player to confront the possibility of combat. It's something you have to always keep in the back of your mind; you have to analyze the layout of each room with a level of consideration that most games never ask of you. You ask yourself how and where you should stand to give yourself the upper hand against the game's various monsters. Your fight-or-flight becomes your primary consultant for decision-making. Do you stand your ground and fight, or do you try to find a way around it? Fighting uses your incredibly valuable resources. If you try to get around it, it could end in death. Death could spell the loss of immeasurable progress, as saving your game is also an expendable resource.
Sounds anxiety-inducing, doesn't it?
This is what made Resident Evil such a tense, memorable experience for me when I first played it years back. But without all of those little hand-crafted design choices, it wouldn't have made anywhere near as big of an impression on me. By creating a game that was professedly against me in most aspects, I was able to truly FEEL trapped, afraid, and anxious.
Horror movies are another story entirely. They sing a similar tune but deliver a vastly different overall experience to their physically interactive brethren. Anecdotally, I also feel like horror films are much less respected. To general audiences, they probably seem fairly dispensable. I feel as if many see horror movies as gimmicky. You know what to expect from a film when you see it laid out in front of you. I can't exactly argue with that; there are a lot of horror movies explicitly made with a gimmick in mind or a niche to fill, but I feel like people very rarely discuss the creative accessibility of this.
By "creative accessibility" I mean many, many things. Horror movies can be built on tropes. They can be shot with a low, almost non-existent budget. Horror as a concept can be accompanied by, quite literally, anything. Action, comedy, suspense, science fiction, satire, political commentary, psychology, nostalgia, anything you can think of. It's for that reason I think so many indie horror films are made.
Sure, you could construe that as a bad thing. You could say this leads to people doing the same things ad nauseam. But I've always fundamentally disagreed with the dismissal of ideas, whether they be tropes or not. Imitation is often the first step in any creative person's development. I firmly believe that most people start off having a specific source of inspiration, something or someone you want to "be just like". That's not a bad thing. It's something beautiful, it's something passionate, and it's something worth pursuing as a young creative that leads to greater things. People who start off simply "copying" others eventually learn, evolve, grow, and become unique voices in their own right. Nurturing and observing that development is always far more important to me than the ostentatious flaunting of knowledge and the harsh ridicule of artists in the making.
There are always going to be cash grabs, there's always going to be greed; but it's a personal call of judgment to not interact with content that fits your criteria for those things.
I do feel frustrated that most critical facilities seem to be of the mindset that horror movies aren't worth your time unless they're somehow "elevated" above the rest. Arthouse horror is just as important as any other subgenre, but it's not "more" important or "the most" important. By superfluously limiting yourself to just the "good" stuff, you're missing out on ideas, imagery, and passion from MOST of this beautiful genre's history. Oversaturation is the constant perpetuation of an idea over a short period, but ideas evolve over time. They make their way to capable, smart, creative people that WANT to give you the best of what a concept has to offer. That's how we eventually get wonderful things.
There's a famous quote by Cesar A. Cruz that says, "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable." While this is a very general statement (one that I have to fundamentally disagree with due to the nature of its objectivity), it does highlight a personal concurrence that horror shares with me as a person; it makes me feel.
Whenever someone recommends a film or story-driven video game, I'm often met with the universal truism: "It made me cry."
This statement fills me with a particular dread, because I always immediately know the outcome of myself interacting with the recommended content.
I've never, once, been able to cry at a movie. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the experience it gave me or feel the emotions it was trying to portray. It just doesn't impact me as much, and my assumption is that I can't fully relate to a lot of relatable things that would make someone cry.
Horror is unique in that sense for me. Psychological horror, specifically. When a certain well-enacted piece wants me to feel disturbed, I truly, honestly feel disturbed. I will watch an incredibly thought-provoking, horrifying film, and think about it for the next week. That doesn't really happen with most other media for me, although I understand the complete subjectivity of that stance.
Horror makes me feel comforted. It's grotesque, it's disquieting, it's disturbing, but in an odd way... I understand it completely.
In today,s ted talk I'm going talk about why garten of banban is actually peak horr

Who Dies? S5 Prediction
Short answer: IMO no one. It's serves the story better.
Long Answer:
This is a horror story, thus we need to feel the possibility that characters can die. In previous seasons we had actual character deaths. This is the expectation we have going into S5. People can and will die, because people we loved in the past died.
I am of the honest and simple opinion that the creators are going to take the difficult path and keep everyone alive while acting as if they can die.
This is hard because we will have to fear the possibility that they can die and that their plot armor is gone. We need to believe that mortality is close: fully. To create a tangible and palpable fear for characters who have already had close calls without it making the audience lose interest will be difficult. There needs to be a pay off, and close calls. These close calls need to be a hairs length away, more so than any previous season. This will be really hard.
IMO killing a character is easier if they want to be scary. The show is ending. The cast is done either way. Killing the characters will destroy the audience, because we care, but it’s easier to let go now that things are ending. I’m not saying it’s easy to kill a character as creator (cuz you care about the characters’ you’ve written, and it will wreck the themes) but I am saying that it is easier than keeping everyone alive and getting us to believe there is no plot armor.
I also personally think no one will die, because the main cast are all tied heavily to the coming of age story that is at the heart of the narrative. Killing a main cast member seems antithesis to the actual message of the show. And there are logistical issues for the story telling. If characters don’t mourn, why? If they do, how long? (there’s way more questions, but those two are the biggest). This would make telling the end of this epic conclusion of a coming of age tale difficult — more so than it already is.
I think that to keep the theme of coming of age at the center, and the loss of youth, no one will die. This is the harder path, because it is a horror, but it makes things easier for wrapping up the stories main narrative and theme.
Yet.
WHO MIGHT DIE?
Pretty much any and all of the soldiers.
Anyone associated with Dr. Owens.
Dr. Owens
Lt. Col. Sullivan - He's the guy who was chasing down El in S4.
Kali - If she shows up. She will probably die. I also think that they can easily use her if they don’t want to kill the main cast. She’d be a great example of what could happen. We don't care for her character that much but we do know her. We know she has powers, so her death would establish a new baseline of what the group has to overcome.
So that's all side characters. What about mains? IF someone was going to die. WHO?
Going forward it's important to note that this choice matters a ton to the audience and characters. This will not be a simple choice and the characters will have to deal with the ramifications of said deaths.
But if I had to make a choice, this is who I think is on the possible chopping block. (And once again I want to reinforce that this is bad for the general message and themes of the plot so IMO it is highly unlikely.)
Steve
If one main cast member is going to die, it will be Steve. Why? Because we love him. He’s been redeemed. He just gave Nancy his regret list. He is loved by a lot of the characters. He’s always been a protector of the cast. His death would hit HARD. (Poor Dustin tho, because he just lost Eddie.) The other two older teens are safe, IMO which really only leaves Steve.
Everyone has said this like 10000 times already so it's not my idea. And sadly, he has the most death flags out of everyone.
Dustin
Of the young teens, he is the only one I think reasonably can die. Lucas won’t (be frank, they won’t kill their lead POC). Mike and Will can’t. El can’t either, as she’s one of the main three. Max is already in the comma. Suzie wont, cuz she's not even in the city. Erica won't (same reason as Lucas).
Dustin has been the voice of reason and the one who really drove S4’s plot as the center of the plans. His death would shatter everyone: audience and the main cast. He’s such a good kid, and I really think that Dustin is the one character that can unify the town against Vecna. Do I think it’s likely that he will die? No. But if a young teen dies, it’s him.
Joyce
When it comes to the adults, I think that Joyce has the highest chance of dying for plot purposes. Hopper already died, and came back. Do I think it’s likely for Joyce to die? No. (Plus it really would mess with the coming of age tale for Will), but could it? Possibly, if one of the main adults has to die. She’s pivotal to the plot. She’s an important figure. She’s had a lot of close calls. It’s not likely, like at all.
Murray
IMO Murray won’t die because he just won’t. However. I can see him going out in the blazes of glory. But even then I feel like he’d appear afterwards like, wow that was intense but I’m back now.
El
Didn’t you just say— yes. I did. Okay? I stand by it. She can’t. She’s one of the main three and the coming of age tale holds her at the center just like Will and Mike. However. If one of the main three had to die, it will be El. I know some people will think Will, but because is the main character for S5 I doubt it. I know that we are supposed to begin and end with Will, but I really don't think that means his death. I think that has more to do with themes and the general connection to the underground and it's El who opened up the OG portal.
Do I want this? No. Do I think it serves her story in any way? Heck no. But. El is someone who could possibly sacrifice herself for everyone else (I don’t want that). IMO, there’s no way they could kill her off, but like… Just to cover my bases I guess.
This is not much (and it excludes the random other strangers throughout the show who could die) but it’s what I would expect if anyone were to die, especially of the main cast.
Feel free to disagree and debate with me, if you like. TBH I have no factual evidence to back up my statements, its all gut feeling (and flags).

#HorrorRPGs2016 Bloodshadows Third Edition
There’s a phrase I often go back to, drawn from the Save the Cat screenwriter’s book: Double Mumbo-Jumbo. The idea of a cool, wild concept which then has a ton of additional unrelated concepts jammed on top of it which muddy the waters. This can come off well with some games: when there’s a synergy which emerges from the elements. That’s often the case with collaborative world-building, where the process of creation and ownership invests the players.
Then there’s something like Bloodshadows. This is the third edition of a game originally part of West End Games’ Masterbook d6 series (1994). Unlike many others, this one didn’t rely on a license. That meant WEG could more easily build the line which they did with eight supplements in a little over a year. A reconstituted WEG would release an Open d6 version in 2004, though they did little to support it. This one comes from genreDiversion and uses their house system (also used with Coyote Trail, HardNova, and more). The core book includes conversion notes for a variety of systems.
But back to double-mumbo jumbo. The idea of fantasy noir is a great one: fantastical creatures, people, and magic is an alternate take on the world. The Edge of Midnight and Deadlands Noir are examples. Note that, despite many changes, they’re both still in another version of our world. Streets of New Capenna, the recent Magic the Gathering card set is also fantasy noir with an art deco element. It’s not on our Earth, but the set up for it comes out of the cosmology of MTG itself.
Bloodshadows has all the look and trappings of classic noir: guns, fedoras, foggy streets. And there’s magic, non-human folk, and dark cults, that gives us the horror trappings which land it on this list. But then it adds a massive high fantasy backstory about a Godswar, a fantasy world, the last cities each with distinct magic and tech, and a massive wilderness separating them, etc. It invites many more questions than it answers. (How is the economy supported? where do they get cigarettes? what about communications?). Its wild and imaginative, but also stops me every time I have a hard think about it. The mix of gritty noir with hand-wavy fantasy world-building throws me.
YRMV I know a ton of people who love the setting: for them the contradictions and nonsense of it fuse together or they just simply ignore it.
genreDiversion’s third edition is interesting. It’s a text dense release and the pages have a newspaper background that I don’t dig. The art’s a mixed bag, some really solid and others either raw or too dark. In play I didn’t grok the system over several sessions. But there’s a lot of material in this book and it clocks in at about 260+ pages. If you dig the setting, it probably wouldn’t be that hard to port over to another system.

October Halloween Movie Fest Day 22:
Tonight I finished my little Sleepy Hollow mini-run with Tim Burton’s version, which has been a favorite of mine. Every time I watch it, I think I’m gonna get critical and nitpicky, and every time it’s just too damn enjoyable for me to care about the slight mess of a plot. It’s not a good adaptation so much as it’s a Goth Paranormal Murder Mystery AU, but it does an excellent job at what it is. The Tim Burton Style is used sparingly, and the muted color palette really works for it; it would clearly be more comfortable if it was set in the Victorian era but it still has some fantastic costumes and scenery; Christina Ricci is not a Period Actress but she does a great job anyway; and Johnny Depp has not yet gone off the deep end trying to be memorably weird in every role and does an excellent job at this skeptical anxious/terrified dork version of Ichabod. Oh, and Christopher Walken. Just Christopher Walken. The Disney version is the quality one, and if there’s a closer adaptation than Disney’s I haven’t bothered to find out, but this movie has tons of fun taking the story in a different direction.
Treehouse of Horror 22 (The Butterball and the Diving Bell/Dial D for Diddly/In the Na’vi):
Well, this one’s a load of meh. The intro was fairly good, if a little long, but the best segment was Diddly and that’s not saying a lot. The first one—okay, playing Grounded has made me very slightly a spider connoisseur, and why would your punny title reference diving bell spiders when you clearly designed a black widow. And it started off okay, not great, a little juvenile with the farting, but then I guess they ran out of plot and just went insane, and it wasn’t funny, either. The second segment had a great credits sequence, and some good Ned monologuing, but not much else, and the title making the same reference they made two seasons ago feels sort of insulting or at least lazy. And the third segment had some good parody set-up… but unfortunately was clearly a parody made by people still pretty dazzled by a fairly bland movie, and even worse, they packed it with alien sex jokes without like… aging up Bart or pretending he’s a mini-adult or something. That was just uncomfortable. It does get a point for an excellent pun title, credit where credit is due. The list is now 1, 5, 4, 7, 6, 3, 2, 20, 9, 8, 17, 16, 15, 19, 13, 21, 12, 14, 10, 18, 22, 11.
…I am considering illustrating or rating each later episode with a gif I can make from earlier years. For example:
Tumblr media
(it’s not a great gif, but it’s definitely what I want to say to the writers for this episode)

Local Bookstore Report 2022
So the local bookstore I go to is about 1/8 the size of the Barnes and Nobles. I’ve seen the shift similar to what happened in Barnes and Nobles. But there are some interesting upsets this time that don’t match B&N.
Again, I report on who goes there, who are their customers, and the diversity+shelving. I took the pictures about a week after the B&N, but I got caught in other things in the interim.
I’m not listing the name of the bookstore, since this isn’t the point of the exercise. It’s not to criticize a single bookstore for their shelving practices, but more look at the trends in book shelving. The usual about how I’ve been doing this since I was 13-ish, and probably subconsciously before then.
Being a smaller bookstore, you’re kinda forced to actually pick up and read the books in question. The adult section, though is several rows away from the kids’ section.
Similar to Barnes and Noble, the bookstore is divided similarly, with the addition of MG as a bookshelf.
There is the catch all Fiction section, which in years past had “romance” as a separate section, a Science fiction and Fantasy section. A Horror/mystery/thriller section. Similarly,. the multicultural books that used to be shelved separately are now integrated into the bookstore. Being smaller and a more liberal bookstore and not afraid of it, MG and YA were always separate.
Literature/Classics is mixed together in the fiction section, so no one shelf is “all white. They also put a ton of effort into making the “How to write section” have PoC and women mixed throughout--which seriously surprised me considering some of the years past.
The clientele tend to be diverse, but more white liberal types since it’s on a busy strip (lol One that showed in Grey’s Anatomy once...) As such, the books are politically more left leaning and rather unapologetic about it.
The major upset that I spotted on the shelf was that NK Jemisin was shelved, but Sara Maas was not. I theorize that Sara’s books are considered too long for the bookstore that is specifically trying its hardest to push diversity, and it’s more likely people will know of Sara Maas over some of the other choices. The sense of “discovery” was really good in this store--I suppose they have to live off of this kind of discovery. For example, I found out there were foreign translated titles in the “Fiction” section like Natsume Soseki, so you get that feeling of discovering a “treasure” you didn’t know.
I’ve also learned over the years that bookstores can request certain types of covers if there are multiple covers for a given book. Such as Octavia Butler. This bookstore tends to use the covers with the People of color on the cover.
Coincidentally, Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Maiden had one copy left like B&N.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tldr; Romance was subsumed into the Fiction section in this bookstore too. No Sara Maas. Historical Fiction and Romance writers are crying right now. Interstitial seems to be picking up for these two genres. Genres left standing SFF and Horror/Mystery/Thriller. Western is the dodo bird. And the lesson I learned is long books don’t get shelved in small bookstores. TT

We ask you a lot about what series/shows/movies did wrong, but what are some scenes or moments that you are like "yes! That was done right!"? It can be from anything, but I'd love to also hear about places where things are done right.
It all depends on what you mean. Let's see:
In terms of redemption arcs and flawed protagonists, All Dogs Go to Heaven is one example we like.
Bojack Horseman is the same and there's a TON of other things it did well, such as the cycle of abuse and how abuse doesn't excuse your actions and asexual representation. The list goes on.
In terms of animal fiction: Watership Down and The Animals of Farthing Wood nail immersion and anthropromorphism mixed together.
When Marnie Was There is a movie we enjoy for varying reasons. Cat feels it's a healthy, cute depiction of two girls being gay if you ignore the last ten minutes. I feel it's a nice representation of childhood depression and isolation. Also, this movie is freaking BEAUTIFUL. I just feel at peace watching it.
Wolf Children is an example of family ties and growing up, with the shapeshifting intertwined nicely in it all.
Beauty and the Beast is one where people tried to repeat its tropes to DEATH and failed miserably, right down to its live-action remake. Yeah, just watch the original movie. It got everything right a lot of the time. lol
The Iron Giant and Lilo and Stitch are examples of quirky kid protagonists that worked. The latter also dealt with the effects of trauma on a young child and her sibling and did it in a sensitive and loving way.
To go off on that: Infinity Train also tackled an array of issues that children deal with (trauma, divorce and so on) and showed characters not accepting what's only ever expected of them. Redemption and also no redemption.
A Goofy Movie really nailed father-son relationships and single parent issues too. Just relationships with your child in general. Kudos to them for hinting at abusive relationships and how damaging they are to children as well when it came to Pete and PJ and Pete's 'under your thumb' approach. Like respect vs. fear. And they did it without even saying they did it too, which is really nice for a Disney movie.
A Goofy Movie was just terrifically done in the essence that there is no real antagonist (tho Pete and the principal come close - fuck those guys) and, while you initially side with Max as a child because his uncool dad is crashing his style, you grow up and really sympathise with Goofy's situation too. Realising that you don't really know your kid and he could be mixed up in some heinous shit would cause any parent to act like he does. It's really one of those movies where you can have more than one perspective and, while it gives me real bad 90's vibes, I really think it's timeless in its themes and delivery.
We talked about Finding Nemo briefly a few weeks back. The relationship between a concerned parent and disabled child was handled great. Somebody brought that up and I hardcore agree with them.
AND NOW FOR THE ADULT MOVIES SECTION
I've also talked about movies like Single White Female, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and so on: here
Bound is not only good sapphic representation, featuring a bisexual woman and a lesbian, but it's got a proactive and smart butch lesbian and they're shown actually supporting each other and making a really good team. Plus its got like. The perfect ending.
Thelma & Louise is good for starting out as a roadtrip comedy between two jaded wives taking a vacation away from their husbands, but then it quickly turns dark and they end up on the run from the law.
Jennifer's Body, gay as fuck, but also a really entertaining dark comedy horror that ultimately got messed up by the awful advertising.
Carol and Fried Green Tomatoes are good too
Annhilation is underrated in how it not only has all female-leads, but in how it explores the philosophy of self-destruction and the complexities of depression.
It's not inherently sapphic even tho one of the leads is a lesbian.
Also: Gia
Perfect Blue is a great psychological thriller that just nails everything that comes with that genre. And, even while it's about a semi popular celebrity changing her career path and people reacting badly to it, I think a lot of people who use the internet and have people who feel entitled to them simple for orbiting in the same circles can relate to a lot of elements that the protagonist goes through.
Felidae is also a well-written example of human emotions and complexities being applied to animals and it critiques such things at the same time.
Please note that we've tagged the above movies as ADULT for a reason. They can contain distressing and disturbing content. Please view with caution. Thank you. c:
